Charge disproportionation as a possible mechanism towards polar antiferromagnetic metal in molecular orbital crystal

Polar antiferromagnetic metals have recently garnered increasing interests due to their combined traits of both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets for spintronic applications. However, the inherently incompatible nature of antiferromagnet, metallicity and polarity pose a significant challenge. We propose that charge disproportionation can lead to this novel state in negative charge transfer gap regime in molecular orbital crystal by molecular orbital analyses of first-principles DFT+$U$ electronic band structure for representative Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer perovskite oxides Sr$_3$Co$_2$O$_7$, corroborated by Density Matrix Renormalization Group calculation. Due to the negative charge transfer nature of Co$^{4+}$ and imposed by strong interlayer coupling, localized molecular orbitals stemming from the hybridization of Co $d_{z^2}$ and $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals through the apical oxygen $p$ orbitals are preferably emergent within each bilayer unit, which develop antiferromagnetic ordering by invoking Hubbard repulsion. Charge disproportionation driven by Hund's physics, makes an occupation imbalance with broken inversion symmetry in the remaining $d_{xy}$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals from distinct Co atoms within the bilayer unit, resulting in the polar metallicity. Meanwhile, this charge disproportionation scenario allows consequent conducting carriers to couple with interlayer local spins via Hund's coupling, giving rise to in-plane double-exchange ferromagnetism. Our molecular orbital formulation further provides a guide towards an effective Hamiltonian for modelling the unconventional synergy of metallicity, polarity and antiferromagnetism in Sr$_3$Co$_2$O$_7$, which may be a unified framework widely applicable to double-layer Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite oxides.

Noisy induced entanglement transition in one-dimensional random quantum circuits

Random quantum circuit is a minimally structured model to study the entanglement dynamics of many-body quantum systems. In this paper, we considered a one-dimensional quantum circuit with noisy Haar-random unitary gates using density matrix operator and tensor contraction methods. It is shown that the entanglement evolution of the random quantum circuits is properly characterized by the logarithmic entanglement negativity. By performing exact numerical calculations, we found that, as the physical error rate is decreased below a critical value $p_c\approx 0.056$, the logarithmic entanglement negativity changes from the area law to the volume law, giving rise to an entanglement transition. The critical exponent of the correlation length can be determined from the finite-size scaling analysis, revealing the universal dynamic property of the noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices.

Phase coherence of pairs of Cooper pairs as quasi-long-range order of half-vortex pairs in a two-dimensional bilayer system

It is known that the loss of phase coherence of Cooper pairs in two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity corresponds to the unbinding of vortex-antivortex pairs with the quasi-long-range order (quasi-LRO) in the order-parameter phase field, described by the Berezinskii-Kosterlizt-Thouless (BKT) transition of a 2D XY model. Here we show that the second-order Josephson coupling can induce an exotic superconducting phase in a bilayer system. By using tensor-network methods, the partition function of the 2D classical model is expressed as a product of 1D quantum transfer operator, whose eigen-equation can be solved by an algorithm of matrix product states rigorously. From the singularity shown by the entanglement entropy of the 1D quantum analogue, various phase transitions can be accurately determined. Below the BKT phase transition, an inter-layer Ising long-range order is established at $T_{Ising}$, and the phase coherence of both intra-layers and inter-layers is locked together. For two identical layers, the Ising transition coincides with the BKT transition at a multi-critical point. For two inequivalent layers, however, there emerges an intermediate quasi-LRO phase ($T_{Ising}<T<T_{BKT}$), where the vortex-antivortex bindings occur in the layer with the larger intra-layer coupling, but only half-vortex pairs with topological strings exist in the other layer, corresponding to the phase coherence of pairs of Cooper pairs. So our study provides a promising way to realize the charge-4e superconductivity in a bilayer system.

Tensor network approach to the two-dimensional fully frustrated XY model and a chiral ordered phase

A general framework is proposed to solve the two-dimensional fully frustrated XY model for the Josephson junction arrays in a perpendicular magnetic field. The essential idea is to encode the ground-state local rules induced by frustrations in the local tensors of the partition function. The partition function is then expressed in terms of a product of one-dimensional transfer matrix operator, whose eigen-equation can be solved by an algorithm of matrix product states rigorously. The singularity of the entanglement entropy for the one-dimensional quantum analogue provides a stringent criterion to distinguish various phase transitions without identifying any order parameter a prior. Two very close phase transitions are determined at $T_{c1}\approx 0.4459$ and $T_{c2}\approx 0.4532$, respectively. The former corresponding to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition describing the phase coherence of XY spins, and the latter is an Ising-like continuous phase transition below which a chirality order with spontaneously broken $Z_2$ symmetry is established.

Hybrid Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless and Ising topological phase transition in the generalized two-dimensional XY model using tensor networks

In tensor network representation, the partition function of a generalized two-dimensional XY spin model with topological integer and half-integer vortex excitations is mapped to a tensor product of one-dimensional quantum transfer operator, whose eigen-equation can be solved by an algorithm of variational uniform matrix product states. Using the singularities of the entanglement entropy, we accurately determine the complete phase diagram of this model. Both the integer vortex-antivortex binding and half-integer vortex-antivortex binding phases are separated from the disordered phase by the usual Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions, while a continuous topological phase transition exists between two different vortex binding phases, exhibiting a logarithmic divergence of the specific heat and exponential divergence of the spin correlation length. A new hybrid BKT and Ising universality class of topological phase transition is thus established. We further prove that three phase transition lines meets at a multi-critical point, from which a deconfinement crossover line extends into the disordered phase.

Self-doping and the Mott-Kondo scenario for infinite-layer nickelate superconductors

We give a brief review of the Mott-Kondo scenario and its consequence in the recently-discovered infinite-layer nickelate superconductors. We argue that the parent state is a self-doped Mott insulator and propose an effective $t$-$J$-$K$ model to account for its low-energy properties. At small doping, the model describes a low carrier density Kondo system with incoherent Kondo scattering at finite temperatures, in good agreement with experimental observation of the logarithmic temperature dependence of electric resistivity. Upon increasing Sr doping, the model predicts a breakdown of the Kondo effect, which provides a potential explanation of the non-Fermi liquid behavior of the electric resistivity with a power law scaling over a wide range of the temperature. Unconventional superconductivity is shown to undergo a transition from nodeless $(d+is)$-wave to nodal $d$-wave near the critical doping due to competition of the Kondo and Heisenberg superexchange interactions. The presence of different pairing symmetry may be supported by recent tunneling measurements.

Constructing tensor network wavefunction for a generic two-dimensional quantum phase transition via thermofield double states

The most important feature of two-dimensional quantum Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) type models is that their ground state wavefunction norms can be mapped into the partition functions of two-dimensional statistical models so that the quantum phase transitions become the thermal phase transitions of the corresponding statistical models. For a generic quantum critical point, we generalize the framework of RK wavefunctions by introducing the concept of the thermofield double (TFD) state, which is a purification of the equilibrium density operator. Moreover, by expressing the TFD state in terms of the projected entangled pair state, its $N$-order of Rényi entropy results in a three-dimensional statistical model in Euclidian spacetime, describing the generic quantum phase transitions. Using the toric code model with two parallel magnetic fields as an example, we explain these ideas and derive the partition function of the three-dimensional $Z_2$ lattice gauge-Higgs model, where the phase transitions are characterized by the three-dimensional universality classes.

Distinct pairing symmetries of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates

We report theoretical predictions on the pairing symmetry of the newly discovered superconducting nickelate Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ based on the renormalized mean-field theory for a generalized model Hamiltonian proposed in [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{101}, 020501(R)]. For practical values of the key parameters, we find a transition between a gapped ($d+is$)-wave pairing state in the small doping region to a gapless $d$-wave pairing state in the large doping region, accompanied by an abrupt Fermi surface change at the critical doping. Our overall phase diagram also shows the possibility of a ($d+is$)- to $s$-wave transition if the electron hybridization is relatively small. In either case, the low-doping ($d+is$)-wave state is a gapped superconducting state with broken time-reversal symmetry. Our results are in qualitative agreement with recent experimental observations and predict several key features to be examined in future measurements.

Dynamical spin excitations of topological Haldane gapped phase in the $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy

We study the dynamical spin excitations of the one-dimensional $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and stochastic analytic continuation of imaginary-time correlation function. Using the transverse dynamic spin structure factor, we observe the quantum phase transition with a critical point between the topological Haldane gapped phase and the trivial phase. At the quantum critical point, we find a broad continuum characterized by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid similar to a $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. We further identify that the elementary excitations are fractionalized spinons.

Metal-to-metal transition and heavy-electron state in Nd$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$

The trilayer nickelate Nd$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$ ($δ\approx$ 0.15) was investigated by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity. The crystal structure data suggest a higher Ni valence in the inner perovskite-like layer. At ambient pressure the resistivity shows a jump at 162 K, indicating a metal-to-metal transition (MMT). The MMT is also characterized by a magnetic susceptibility drop, a sharp specific-heat peak, and an isotropic lattice contraction. Below $\sim$ 50 K, a resistivity upturn with a log$T$ dependence shows up, accompanying with a negative thermal expansion. External hydrostatic pressure suppresses the resistivity jump progressively, coincident with the diminution of the log$T$ behavior. The low-temperature electronic specific-heat coefficient is extracted to be $\sim$ 150 mJ K$^{-2}$ mol-fu$^{-1}$, equivalent to $\sim$ 50 mJ K$^{-2}$ mol-Ni$^{-1}$, indicating an unusual heavy-electron correlated state. The novel heavy-electron state as well as the logarithmic temperature dependence of resistivity is explained in terms of the Ni$^{3+}$ centered Kondo effect in the inner layer of the (NdNiO$_3$)$_3$ trilayers.

Tensor network approach to phase transitions of a non-Abelian topological phase

The non-abelian topological phase with Fibonacci anyons minimally supports universal quantum computation. In order to investigate the possible phase transitions out of the Fibonacci topological phase, we propose a generic quantum-net wavefunction with two tuning parameters dual with each other, and the norm can be exactly mapped into a partition function of the two-coupled $ϕ^{2}$-state Potts models, where $ϕ=(\sqrt{5}+1)/2$ is the golden ratio. By developing the tensor network representation of this wavefunction on a square lattice, we can accurately calculate the full phase diagram with the numerical methods of tensor networks. More importantly, it is found that the non-abelian Fibonacci topological phase is enclosed by three distinct non-topological phases and their dual phases of a single $ϕ^{2}$-state Potts model: the gapped dilute net phase, critical dense net phase, and spontaneous translation symmetry breaking gapped phase. We also determine the critical properties of the phase transitions among the Fibonacci topological phase and those non-topological phases.

Universal behavior of the thermal Hall conductivity

We report theoretical and experimental analyses of the thermal Hall conductivity in correlated systems. For both fermionic and bosonic excitations with nontrivial topology, we show that at "intermediate" temperatures, the thermal Hall conductivity exhibits an unexpected universal scaling with a simple exponential form. At low temperatures, it behaves differently and reflects the spectral properties of underlying excitations. Our predictions are examined as examples in two prototype compounds, the quantum paraelectric SrTiO$_3$ and the spin-liquid compound RuCl$_3$. The experimental data can be largely covered by our proposed minimal phenomenological model independent of microscopic details, revealing dominant bosonic contributions in SrTiO$_3$ and gapped fermionic excitations in RuCl$_3$. Our work establishes a phenomenological link between microscopic models and experimental data and provides a unified basis for analyzing the thermal Hall conductivity in correlated systems over a wide temperature region.

Self-doped Mott insulator for parent compounds of nickelate superconductors

We propose the parent compound of the newly discovered superconducting nickelate Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ as a self-doped Mott insulator, in which the low-density Nd-$5d$ conduction electrons couple to localized Ni-3$% d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ electrons to form Kondo spin singlets at low temperatures. This proposal is motivated with our analyses of the reported resistivity and Hall coefficient data in the normal state, showing logarithmic temperature dependence at low temperatures. In the strong Kondo coupling limit, we derive a generalized $t$-$J$ model with both Kondo singlets and nickel holons moving through the lattice of otherwise nickel spin-1/2 background. The antiferromagnetic long-range order is therefore suppressed as observed in experiments. With Sr-doping, the number of holons on the nickel sites increases, giving rise to the superconductivity and a strange metal phase analogous to those in superconducting copper oxides.

Emergent infinite-randomness fixed points from the extensive random bipartitions of the spin-1 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki topological state

Quantum entanglement under an extensive bipartition can reveal the critical boundary theory of a topological phase in the parameter space. In this study we demonstrate that the infinite-randomness fixed point for spin-1/2 degrees of freedom can emerge from an extensive random bipartition of the spin-1 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki chain. The nested entanglement entropy of the ground state of the reduced density matrix exhibits a logarithmic scaling with an effective central charge $\tilde{c} = 0.72 \pm 0.02 \approx \ln 2$. We further discuss, in the language of bulk quantum entanglement, how to understand all phase boundaries and the surrounding Griffiths phases for the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1 chain with quenched disorder and dimerization.

Pairing symmetry of heavy fermion superconductivity in the two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model

In the two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model away from half-filled, the local antiferromagnetic exchange coupling can provide the pairing mechanism of quasiparticles via the Kondo screening effect, leading to the heavy fermion superconductivity. We find that the pairing symmetry \textit{strongly} depends on the Fermi surface (FS) structure in the normal metallic state. When $J_{H}/J_{K}$ is very small, the FS is a small hole-like circle around the corner of the Brillouin zone, and the s-wave pairing symmetry has a lower ground state energy. For the intermediate coupling values of $J_{H}/J_{K}$, the extended s-wave pairing symmetry gives the favored ground state. However, when $J_{H}/J_{K}$ is larger than a critical value, the FS transforms into four small hole pockets crossing the boundary of the magnetic Brillouin zone, and the d-wave pairing symmetry becomes more favorable. In that regime, the resulting superconducting state is characterized by either nodal d-wave or nodeless d-wave state, depending on the conduction electron filling factor as well. A continuous phase transition exists between these two states. This result may be related to the phase transition of the nodal d-wave state to a fully gapped state, which is recently observed in Yb doped CeCoIn$_{5}$.

Proximity induced superconductivity in monolayer CuO$_{2}$ on the cuprate substrates

To understand the recently observed high temperature superconductivity in the monolayer CuO$_2$ grown on the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ substrates, we propose a two band model of the hybridized oxygen $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals with the proximity effect of the substrate. We demonstrate that both the nodal and nodeless d-wave superconducting states can be induced by the proximity effect, depending on the strengths of the pairing parameters.

Quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg half-odd integer spin model as the entanglement Hamiltonian of the integer spin Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki states

Applying a symmetric bulk bipartition to one-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence bond solid (VBS) states for the integer spin-S Haldane gapped phase, we can create an array of fractionalized spin-S/2 edge states with the super unit cell $l$ in the reduced bulk system, and the topological properties encoded in the VBS wave functions can be revealed. The entanglement Hamiltonian (EH) with $l=even$ corresponds to the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-S/2 model. For the even integer spins, the EH still describes the Haldane gapped phase. For the odd integer spins, however, the EH just corresponds to the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg half-odd integer spin model with spinon excitations, characterizing the critical point separating the topological Haldane phase from the trivial gapped phase. Our results thus demonstrate that the topological bulk property not only determines its fractionalized edge states, but also the quantum criticality associated with the topological phase, where the elementary excitations are precisely those fractionalized edge degrees of freedom confined in the bulk of the topological phase.

SU(3) quantum critical model emerging from a spin-1 topological phase

Different from the spin-1 Haldane gapped phase, we propose a novel SO(3) spin-1 matrix product state (MPS), whose parent Hamiltonian includes three-site spin interactions. From the entanglement spectrum of a single block with $l$ sites, an enlarged SU(3) symmetry is identified in the edge states, which are conjugate to each other for the $l=even$ block but identical for the $l=odd$ block. By blocking this novel state, the blocked MPS explicitly displays the SU(3) symmetry with two distinct structures. Under a symmetric bulk bipartition with a sufficient large block length $% l=even$, the entanglement Hamiltonian (EH) of the reduced system characterizes a spontaneous dimerized phase with two-fold degeneracy. However, for the block length $l=odd$, the corresponding EH represents an SU(3) quantum critical point with delocalized edge quasiparticles, and the critical field theory is described by the SU(3) level-1 Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory.

Critical entanglement spectrum of one-dimensional symmetry protected topological phases

Under an appropriate symmetric extensive bipartition in a one-dimensional symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase, a bulk critical entanglement spectrum can be obtained, resembling the excitation spectrum of the critical point separating the SPT phase from the trivial (vacuum) state. Such a critical point is beyond the standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for symmetry breaking phase transitions. For the $S=1$ SPT (Haldane) phase with the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki exact wave function, the resulting critical entanglement spectrum has a residual entropy per lattice site $s_{r}=0.67602$, showing a delocalized version of the edge excitations in the SPT phase. From the wave function corresponding to the lowest entanglement energy level, the central charge of the critical point can be extracted $c\approx 1.01\pm 0.01$. The critical theory can be identified as the same effective field theory as the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain or the spin-1/2 Haldane-Shastry model with inverse square long-range interaction.

Disentangling topological degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum of one-dimensional symmetry protected topological phases

One-dimensional valence bond solid (VBS) states represent the simplest symmetry protected topological phases. We show that their ground state entanglement spectrum contains both topological and non-topological structures. For the $SO(3)$ symmetric VBS states with odd-integer spins, the two-fold topological degeneracy is associated with an underlying $Z_{2}\times Z_{2}$ symmetry that protects the corresponding topological phase. In general, for the $SO(2S+1)$ symmetric VBS states with integer spins $S$, the corresponding protecting symmetry is identified as the $(Z_{2}\times Z_{2})^{S}$ symmetry, yielding the $2^{S}$-fold topological degeneracy. The topological degeneracy and associated protecting symmetry can be identified by a non-local unitary transformation, which changes the topological order of the VBS states into conventional ferromagnetic order.

Topologically distinct critical theories emerging from the bulk entanglement spectrum of integer quantum Hall states on a lattice

The critical theories for the topological phase transitions of integer quantum Hall states to a trivial insulating state with the same symmetry can be obtained by calculating the ground state entanglement spectrum under a symmetric checkerboard bipartition. In contrast to the gapless edge excitations under the left-right bipartition, a quantum network with bulk gapless excitations naturally emerges at the Brillouin zone center without fine tuning. On a large finite lattice, the resulting critical theory for the $ν=1$ state is the (2+1) dimensional relativistic quantum field theory characterized by a \textit{single} Dirac cone spectrum and a pair of \textit{fractionalized} zero-energy states, while for the $ν=2$ state the critical theory exhibits a parabolic spectrum and no sign of fractionalization in the zero-energy states. A triangular correspondence is established among the bulk topological theory, gapless edge theory, and the critical theory via the ground state entanglement spectrum.

Weak ferromagnetism with the Kondo screening effect in the Kondo lattice systems

We carefully consider the interplay between ferromagnetism and the Kondo screening effect in the conventional Kondo lattice systems at finite temperatures. Within an effective mean-field theory for small conduction electron densities, a complete phase diagram has been determined. In the ferromagnetic ordered phase, there is a characteristic temperature scale to indicate the presence of the Kondo screening effect. We further find two distinct ferromagnetic long-range ordered phases coexisting with the Kondo screening effect: spin fully polarized and partially polarized states. A continuous phase transition exists to separate the partially polarized ferromagnetic ordered phase from the paramagnetic heavy Fermi liquid phase. These results may be used to explain the weak ferromagnetism observed recently in the Kondo lattice materials.

Classification of quantum critical states of integrable antiferromagnetic spin chains and their correspondent two-dimensional topological phases

We examine the effective field theory of the Bethe ansatz integrable Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chains. It shows that the quantum critical theories for the integer spin-S chains should be characterized by the SO(3)level-S Wess-Zumino-Witten model, and classified by the third cohomology group $H^{3}(SO(3),Z)=Z$. Depending on the parity of spin S, this integer classification is further divided into two distinct universality classes, which are associated with two completely different conformal field theories: the even-S chains have gapless bosonic excitations and the odd-S chains have both bosonic and fermionic excitations. We further show that these two classes of critical states correspond to the boundary states of two distinct topological phases in two dimension, which can be described by two-dimensional doubled SO(3) topological Chern-Simons theory and topological spin theory, respectively.

D-wave superconductivity induced by short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model

The possible heavy fermion superconductivity is carefully reexamined in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model with an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg superexchange between local magnetic moments. In order to establish an effective mean field theory in the limit of the paramagnetic heavy Fermi liquid and near the half-filling case, we find that the spinon singlet pairing from the local antiferromagnetic short-range correlations can reduce the ground state energy substantially. In the presence of the Kondo screening effect, the Cooper pairs between the conduction electrons is induced. Depending on the ratio of the Heisenberg and the Kondo exchange couplings, the resulting superconducting state is characterized by either a d-wave nodal or d-wave nodeless state, and a continuous phase transition exists between these two states. These results are related to some quasi-two dimensional heary fermion superconductors.

Continuous quantum phase transition between two topologically distinct valence bond solid states associated with the same spin value

We propose a simple one-dimensional spin-2 Hamiltonian, which exhibits two topologically distinct valence bond solid states in different exactly solvable limits. We then construct the phase diagram and study the quantum phase transition between these states using the infinite time evolving block decimation algorithms. From the scaling relation between the entanglement entropy and correlation length, we find that the central charge for the underlying critical conformal field theory is $c=2$.

Multiple Lifshitz transitions driven by short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model

With a mean field approach, the heavy Fermi liquid in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model is carefully considered in the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. As the ratio of the local Heisenberg superexchange coupling to the Kondo coupling increases, the Fermi surface structure changes dramatically. From the analysis of the ground state energy density, multiple Lifshitz type phase transitions occur at zero temperature.

Particle-hole symmetry and interaction effects in the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model

We prove that the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with purely imaginary next-nearest-neighbor hoppings has a particle-hole symmetry at half-filling. Such a symmetry has interesting consequences including the absence of charge and spin currents along open edges, and the absence of the sign problem in the determinant quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. Consequentially, the interplay between band topology and strong correlations can be studied at high numeric precisions. The process that the topological band insulator evolves into the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator as increasing interaction strength is studied by calculating both the bulk and edge electronic properties. In agreement with previous theory analyses, the numeric simulations show that the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model exhibits three phases as increasing correlation effects: the topological band insulating phase with stable helical edges, the bulk paramagnetic phase with unstable edges, and the bulk antiferromagnetic phase.

Topological term in the non-linear $σ$ model of the SO(5) spin chains

We show that there is a topological (Berry phase) term in the non-linear $σ$ model description of the SO(5) spin chain. It distinguishes the linear and projective representations of the SO(5) symmetry group, in exact analogy to the well-known $θ$-term of the SO(3) spin chain. The presence of the topological term is due to the fact that $π_2(\frac{SO(5)}{SO(3)\times SO(2)})= \mathbb{Z}$. We discuss the implication of our results on the spectra of the SO(5) spin chain, and connect it with a recent solvable SO(5) spin model which exhibits valence bond solid ground state and edge degeneracy.

Insulator-to-metal phase transition in Yb-based Kondo insulators

The periodic Anderson lattice model for the crystalline electric field (CEF)split 4f quartet states is used to describe the Yb-based Kondo insulators/semiconductors. In the slave-boson mean-field approximation, we derive the hybridized quasiparticle bands, and find that decreasing the hybridization difference of the two CEF quartets may induce an insulator-to-metal phase transition. The resulting metallic phase has a hole and an electron Fermi pockets. Such a phase transition may be realized experimentally by applying pressure, reducing the difference in hybridization of the two CEF quartets.

Kondo screening coexisting with ferromagnetic order as a possible ground state for Kondo lattice systems

We consider the competition between the Kondo screening effect and ferromagnetic long-range order (FLRO) within a mean-field theory of the Kondo lattice model for low conduction electron densities $n_{c}$. Depending on the parameter values, several types of FLRO ground states are found. When $n_{c}<0.16$, a polarized FLRO phase is dominant. For $0.16<n_{c}<0.82$, a non-polarized FLRO phase appears in the weak Kondo coupling region; while in the intermediate coupling region the ground state corresponds to the polarized and non-polarized FLRO phases, respectively, coexisting with the Kondo screening. For a strong Kondo coupling, the product of pure Kondo singlets is the ground state. Moreover, we also find that a weak magnetic field makes the pure Kondo singlet phase vanish, while the non-polarized FLRO state with the Kondo screening spans a large area in the phase diagram.

Lifshitz transitions in a heavy-Fermion liquid driven by short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model

The heavy-Fermion liquid with short-range antiferromagnetic correlations is carefully considered in the two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model. As the ratio of the local Heisenberg superexchange $J_{H}$ to the Kondo coupling $J_{K}$ increases, Lifshitz transitions are anticipated, where the topology of the Fermi surface (FS) of the heavy quasiparticles changes from a hole-like circle to four kidney-like pockets centered around $(π,π)$. In-between these two limiting cases, a first-order quantum phase transition is identified at $J_{H}/J_{K}=0.1055$ where a small circle begins to emerge within the large deformed circle. When $J_{H}/J_{K}=0.1425$, the two deformed circles intersect each other and then decompose into four kidney-like Fermi pockets via a second-order quantum phase transition. As $J_{H}/J_{K}$ increases further, the Fermi pockets are shifted along the direction ($π,π$) to ($π/2,π/2$), and the resulting FS is consistent with the FS obtained recently using the quantum Monte Carlo cluster approach to the Kondo lattice system in the presence of the antiferrmagnetic order.

Topologically distinct classes of valence bond solid states with their parent Hamiltonians

We introduce a general method to construct one-dimensional translationally invariant valence bond solid states with a built-in Lie group $G$ and derive their matrix product representations. The general strategies to find their parent Hamiltonians are provided so that the valence bond solid states are their unique ground states. For quantum integer spin-$S$ chains, we discuss two topologically distinct classes of valence bond solid states: One consists of two virtual SU(2) spin-$J$ variables in each site and another is formed by using two $SO(2S+1)$ spinors. Among them, a new spin-1 fermionic valence bond solid state, its parent Hamiltonian, and its properties are discussed in detail. Moreover, two types of valence bond solid states with SO(5) symmetry are further generalized and their respective properties are analyzed as well.

Spin-orbital gapped phase with least symmetry breaking in the one-dimensional symmetrically coupled spin-orbital model

To describe the spin-orbital energy gap formation in the one-dimensional symmetrically coupled spin-orbital model, we propose a simple mean field theory based on an SU(4) constraint fermion representation of spins and orbitals. A spin-orbital gapped phase is formed due to a marginally relevant spin-orbital valence bond pairing interaction. The energy gap of the spin and orbital excitations grows extremely slowly from the SU(4) symmetric point up to a maximum value and then decreases rapidly. By calculating the spin, orbital, and spin-orbital tensor static susceptibilities at zero temperature, we find a crossover from coherent to incoherent magnetic excitations as the spin-orbital coupling decreasing from large to small values.

Interplay of quantum magnetic and potential scattering around Zn or Ni impurity ions in superconducting cuprates

To describe the scattering of superconducting quasiparticles from non-magnetic (Zn) or magnetic (Ni) impurities in optimally doped high T$_c$ cuprates, we propose an effective Anderson model Hamiltonian of a localized electron hybridizing with $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave BCS type superconducting quasiparticles with an attractive scalar potential at the impurity site. Due to the strong local antiferromagnetic couplings between the original Cu ions and their nearest neighbors, the localized electron in the Ni-doped materials is assumed to be on the impurity sites, while in the Zn-doped materials the localized electron is distributed over the four nearest neighbor sites of the impurities with a dominant $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetric form of the wave function. With Ni impurities, two resonant states are formed above the Fermi level in the local density of states at the impurity site, while for Zn impurities a sharp resonant peak below the Fermi level dominates in the local density of states at the Zn site, accompanied by a small and broad resonant state above the Fermi level mainly induced by the potential scattering. In both cases, there are no Kondo screening effects. The local density of states and their spatial distribution at the dominant resonant energy around the substituted impurities are calculated for both cases, and they are in good agreement with the experimental results of scanning tunneling microscopy in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ with Zn or Ni impurities, respectively.

Mesoscopic Kondo screening effect in a single-electron transistor embedded in a metallic ring

We study the Kondo screening effect generated by a single-electron transistor or quantum dot embedded in a small metallic ring. When the ring circumference $L$ becomes comparable to the fundamental length scale $ξ_K^0=\hbar \upsilon _F/T_K^0$ associated with the {\it bulk} Kondo tempe the Kondo resonance is strongly affected, depending on the total number of electrons ({\it modulo} 4) and magnetic flux threading the ring. The resulting Kondo-assisted persistent currents are also calculated in both Kondo and mixed valence regimes, and the maximum values are found in the crossover region.

Ordered valence bond states in symmetric two-dimensional spin-orbital systems

We consider a superexchange Hamiltonian, $H=-\sum_{<i,j>}(2{\bf S}_i\cdot {\bf S}_j-\frac 12)(2{\bf T}_i\cdot {\bf T}_j-\frac 12)$, which describes systems with orbital degeneracy and strong electron-phonon coupling in the limit of large on-site repulsion. In an SU(4) Schwinger boson representation, a reduced spin-orbital interaction is derived {\it exactly}, and a mean field theory has been developed by introducing a symmetric valence bond pairing order parameter. In one dimension, a spin-orbital liquid state with a finite gap is obtained. On a two-dimensional square lattice a novel type of spin-orbital ferromagnetically ordered state appears, while spin and orbital are antiferromagnetic. Moreover, an important relation has been found, relating the spin and orbital correlation functions to the combined spin-orbital ones.

Marginal Fermi liquid resonance induced by a quantum magnetic impurity in d-wave superconductors

We consider a model of an Anderson impurity embedded in a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting state to describe the low-energy excitations of cuprate superconductors doped with a small amount of magnetic impurities. Due to the Dirac-like energy dispersion, a sharp localized resonance above the Fermi energy, showing a marginal Fermi liquid behavior ($ω\ln ω$ as $ω\to 0$) is predicted for the impurity states. The same logarithmic dependence of self-energy and a linear frequency dependence of the relaxation rate are also derived for the conduction electrons, characterizing a new universality class for the strong coupling fixed point. At the resonant energies, the spatial distribution of the electron density of states around the magnetic impurity is calculated, to be confronted with measurements of the scanning tunneling microscopy on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca(Cu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)O$_{8+δ}$.
