Sideways: Depth-Parallel Training of Video Models

We propose Sideways, an approximate backpropagation scheme for training video models. In standard backpropagation, the gradients and activations at every computation step through the model are temporally synchronized. The forward activations need to be stored until the backward pass is executed, preventing inter-layer (depth) parallelization. However, can we leverage smooth, redundant input streams such as videos to develop a more efficient training scheme? Here, we explore an alternative to backpropagation; we overwrite network activations whenever new ones, i.e., from new frames, become available. Such a more gradual accumulation of information from both passes breaks the precise correspondence between gradients and activations, leading to theoretically more noisy weight updates. Counter-intuitively, we show that Sideways training of deep convolutional video networks not only still converges, but can also potentially exhibit better generalization compared to standard synchronized backpropagation.

Approximation Algorithms for the Joint Replenishment Problem with Deadlines

The Joint Replenishment Problem (JRP) is a fundamental optimization problem in supply-chain management, concerned with optimizing the flow of goods from a supplier to retailers. Over time, in response to demands at the retailers, the supplier ships orders, via a warehouse, to the retailers. The objective is to schedule these orders to minimize the sum of ordering costs and retailers' waiting costs. We study the approximability of JRP-D, the version of JRP with deadlines, where instead of waiting costs the retailers impose strict deadlines. We study the integrality gap of the standard linear-program (LP) relaxation, giving a lower bound of 1.207, a stronger, computer-assisted lower bound of 1.245, as well as an upper bound and approximation ratio of 1.574. The best previous upper bound and approximation ratio was 1.667; no lower bound was previously published. For the special case when all demand periods are of equal length we give an upper bound of 1.5, a lower bound of 1.2, and show APX-hardness.

Dynamics of exponential linear map in functional space

We consider the question of existence of a unique invariant probability distribution which satisfies some evolutionary property. The problem arises from the random graph theory but to answer it we treat it as a dynamical system in the functional space, where we look for a global attractor. We consider the following bifurcation problem: Given a probability measure $μ$, which corresponds to the weight distribution of a link of a random graph we form a positive linear operator $Φ$ (convolution) on distribution functions and then we analyze a family of its exponents with a parameter $λ$ which corresponds to connectivity of a sparse random graph. We prove that for every measure $μ$ (\emph{i.e.}, convolution $Φ$) and every $λ< e$ there exists a unique globally attracting fixed point of the operator, which yields the existence and uniqueness of the limit probability distribution on the random graph. This estimate was established earlier \cite{KarpSipser} for deterministic weight distributions (Dirac measures $μ$) and is known as $e$-cutoff phenomena, as for such distributions and $λ>e$ there is no fixed point attractor. We thus establish this phenomenon in a much more general sense.
