Amplification of femtosecond pulses with AI-assisted spectral phase modulation

We report our investigation on ultrashort laser pulse optimization using an AI algorithm in a system consisting of a mode-locked oscillator, a spectral phase shaper, and a highly nonlinear amplifier. We analyzed the performance of the pulse optimization process as a function of two main parameters: the resolution of spectral phase modulation and the number of agents in the algorithm. We showed that the algorithm could find an optimum phase profile for the seed pulse, which allowed for a reduction of the FWHM of the amplified pulse by 10 fs (from 46 to 36 fs), and significantly reduced the intensity of the side-pulse by a factor of 4.6. Importantly, the algorithm used does not require any training and optimizes the pulse shape without any knowledge about the input pulse parameters or the parameters of the amplifier. We believe the proposed system might be a convenient test bed for evaluating various AI-based algorithms in a pulse optimization task.

Soliton trapping and orthogonal Raman scattering in a birefringent microstructured fiber

We report on trapped pulse generation in birefringent microstructured optical fiber. Linearly polarized fs pulses are injected into the microstructured fiber in anomalous dispersion regime. We observed experimentally that soliton pulse polarized along the fast fiber axis partially transfers its energy to the orthogonal polarization. The generated pulse is amplified through the orthogonal Raman gain. The two polarization components are located at group-velocity matched wavelengths. The experimental works are supported with numerical simulations. The obtained results are important for the light sources using self-frequency shifted solitons in applications demanding high polarization purity.

Dispersion management of a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror-based Erbium-doped fiber laser

We report an investigation of dispersion management of an all-polarization maintaining Er-fiber oscillator mode-locked via nonlinear amplification loop mirror in a figure-nine cavity configuration with two output ports. The performance of the laser was investigated within the net cavity dispersion ranging from -0.034 ps2 to +0.006 ps2. We show that the spectral and temporal phase of the pulses at both figure-nine outputs have clearly different characteristics. One of the laser outputs provides pulses with significantly better quality; nonetheless, the rejection output also offers ultrashort pulses with broad spectra. Pulses as short as 79 fs with an energy of 83 pJ were generated directly from the laser in the near-zero dispersion regime.

Frequency-doubled femtosecond Er-doped fiber laser for two-photon excited fluorescence imaging

A femtosecond frequency-doubled Erbium-doped fiber laser with adjustable pulse repetition rate is developed and applied in two-photon excited fluorescence microscopy. The all-fiber laser system provides the fundamental pulse at 1560 nm wavelength with 22 fs duration for the second harmonic generation, resulting in 1.35 nJ, 60 fs pulses at 780 nm. The repetition rate is adjusted by a pulse picker unit built-in within the amplifier chain, directly providing transform-limited pulses for any chosen repetition rate between 1 and 12 MHz. We employed the laser source to drive a scanning two-photon excited fluorescence microscope for ex vivo rat skin and other samples imaging at various pulse repetition rates. Due to compactness, ease of operation, and suitable pulse characteristics the laser source can be considered as an attractive alternative for Ti:sapphire laser in biomedical imaging.
