Discontinuous stationary solutions to certain reaction-diffusion systems

Systems consisting of a single ordinary differential equation coupled with one reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded domain and with the Neumann boundary conditions are studied in the case of particular nonlinearities from the Brusselator model, the Gray-Scott model, the Oregonator model and a certain predator-prey model. It is shown that the considered systems have the both smooth and discontinuous stationary solutions, however, only discontinuous ones can be stable.

Mathematical treatment of PDE model describing chemotactic E. coli colonies

We consider an initial-boundary value problem describing the formation of colony patterns of bacteria Escherichia coli. This model consists of reaction-diffusion equations coupled with the Keller-Segel system from the chemotaxis theory in a bounded domain, supplemented with zero-flux boundary conditions and with non-negative initial data. We answer questions on the global in time existence of solutions as well as on their large time behaviour. Moreover, we show that solutions of a related model may blow up in a finite time.

Stability of constant steady states of a chemotaxis model

The Cauchy problem for the parabolic--elliptic Keller--Segel system in the whole $n$-dimensional space is studied. For this model, every constant $A \in \mathbb{R}$ is a stationary solution. The main goal of this work is to show that $A < 1$ is a stable steady state while $A > 1$ is unstable. Uniformly local Lebesgue spaces are used in order to deal with solutions that do not decay at spatial variable on the unbounded domain.

A framework for non-local, non-linear initial value problems

We study the Cauchy problem for non-linear non-local operators that may be degenerate. Our general framework includes cases where the jump intensity is allowed to depend on the values of the solution itself, e.g. the porous medium equation with the fractional Laplacian and the parabolic fractional $p$-Laplacian. We show the existence, uniqueness of bounded solutions and study their further properties. Several new examples of non-local, non-linear operators are provided.

Instability of Turing patterns in reaction-diffusion-ODE systems

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the pattern formation phenomenon in reaction-diffusion equations coupled with ordinary differential equations. Such systems of equations arise, for example, from modeling of interactions between cellular processes such as cell growth, differentiation or transformation and diffusing signaling factors. We focus on stability analysis of solutions of a prototype model consisting of a single reaction-diffusion equation coupled to an ordinary differential equation. We show that such systems are very different from classical reaction-diffusion models. They exhibit diffusion-driven instability (Turing instability) under a condition of autocatalysis of non-diffusing component. However, the same mechanism which destabilizes constant solutions of such models, destabilizes also all continuous spatially heterogeneous stationary solutions, and consequently, there exist no stable Turing patterns in such reaction-diffusion-ODE systems. We provide a rigorous result on the nonlinear instability, which involves the analysis of a continuous spectrum of a linear operator induced by the lack of diffusion in the destabilizing equation. These results are extended to discontinuous patterns for a class of nonlinearities.

Local criteria for blowup in two-dimensional chemotaxis models

We consider two-dimensional versions of the Keller--Segel model for the chemotaxis with either classical (Brownian) or fractional (anomalous) diffusion. Criteria for blowup of solutions in terms of suitable Morrey spaces norms are derived. Moreover, the impact of the consumption term on the global-in-time existence of solutions is analyzed for the classical Keller--Segel system.

Diffusion-driven blowup of nonnegative solutions to reaction-diffusion-ODE systems

In this paper we provide an example of a class of two reaction-diffusion-ODE equations with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, in which Turing-type instability not only destabilizes constant steady states but also induces blow-up of nonnegative spatially heterogeneous solutions. Solutions of this problem preserve nonnegativity and uniform boundedness of the total mass. Moreover, for the corresponding system with two non-zero diffusion coefficients, all nonnegative solutions are global in time. We prove that a removal of diffusion in one of the equations leads to a finite-time blow-up of some nonnegative spatially heterogeneous solutions.

Optimal criteria for blowup of radial and $N$-symmetric solutions of chemotaxis systems

A simple proof of concentration of mass equal to $8π$ for blowing up $N$-symmetric solutions of the Keller--Segel model of chemotaxis in two dimensions with large $N$ is given. Moreover, a criterion for blowup of solutions in terms of the radial initial concentrations, related to suitable Morrey spaces norms, is derived for radial solutions of chemotaxis in several dimensions. This condition is, in a sense, complementary to the one guaranteeing the global-in-time existence of solutions.

Large global-in-time solutions of the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system on the plane

As it is well known, the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system of chemotaxis on the plane has global-in-time regular nonnegative solutions with total mass below the critical value $8π$. Solutions with mass above $8π$ blow up in a finite time. We show that the case of the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel is different: each mass may lead to a global-in-time-solution, even if the initial data is a finite signed measure. These solutions need not be unique, even if we limit ourselves to nonnegative solutions.

Time-dependent singularities in the Navier-Stokes system

We show that, for a given Hölder continuous curve in $\{(γ(t),t)\,:\, t>0\} \subset R^3\times R^+$, there exists a solution to the Navier-Stokes system for an incompressible fluid in $R^3$ which is smooth outside this curve and singular on it. This is a pointwise solution of the system outside the curve, however, as a distributional solution on $R^3\times R^+$, it solves an analogous Navier-Stokes system with a singular force concentrated on the curve.

Nonlocal porous medium equation: Barenblatt profiles and other weak solutions

A degenerate nonlinear nonlocal evolution equation is considered; it can be understood as a porous medium equation whose pressure law is nonlinear and nonlocal. We show the existence of sign changing weak solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem. Moreover, we construct explicit compactly supported self-similar solutions which generalize Barenblatt profiles --- the well-known solutions of the classical porous medium equation.

Self-similar asymptotics of solutions to the Navier-Stokes system in two dimensional exterior domain

We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary condition in the exterior of one obstacle. Assuming that the circulation at infinity of the velocity is sufficiently small, we prove that the large time behavior of the corresponding solution to the initial-boundary value problem is described by the Lamb-Oseen vortex. The later is the well-known explicit self-similar solution to the Navier-Stokes system in the whole space $\R^2$.

Unstable patterns in reaction-diffusion model of early carcinogenesis

Motivated by numerical simulations showing the emergence of either periodic or irregular patterns, we explore a mechanism of pattern formation arising in the processes described by a system of a single reaction-diffusion equation coupled with ordinary differential equations. We focus on a basic model of early cancerogenesis proposed by Marciniak-Czochra and Kimmel [Comput. Math. Methods Med. {\bf 7} (2006), 189--213], [Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. {\bf 17} (2007), suppl., 1693--1719], but the theory we develop applies to a wider class of pattern formation models with an autocatalytic non-diffusing component. The model exhibits diffusion-driven instability (Turing-type instability). However, we prove that all Turing-type patterns, {\it i.e.,} regular stationary solutions, are unstable in the Lyapunov sense. Furthermore, we show existence of discontinuous stationary solutions, which are also unstable.

Asymptotic properties of entropy solutions to fractal Burgers equation

We study properties of solutions of the initial value problem for the nonlinear and nonlocal equation u_t+(-\partial^2_x)^{α/2} u+uu_x=0 with alpha in (0,1], supplemented with an initial datum approaching the constant states u+/u- (u_-smaller than u_+) as x goes to +/-infty, respectively. It was shown by Karch, Miao & Xu (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 39 (2008), 1536--1549) that, for alpha in (1,2), the large time asymptotics of solutions is described by rarefaction waves. The goal of this paper is to show that the asymptotic profile of solutions changes for alpha \leq 1. If alpha=1, there exists a self-similar solution to the equation which describes the large time asymptotics of other solutions. In the case alpha \in (0,1), we show that the nonlinearity of the equation is negligible in the large time asymptotic expansion of solutions.

Spikes and diffusion waves in one-dimensional model of chemotaxis

We consider the one-dimensional initial value problem for the viscous transport equation with nonlocal velocity $u_t = u_{xx} - \left(u (K^\prime \ast u)\right)_{x}$ with a given kernel $K'\in L^1(\R)$. We show the existence of global-in-time nonnegative solutions and we study their large time asymptotics. Depending on $K'$, we obtain either linear diffusion waves ({\it i.e.}~the fundamental solution of the heat equation) or nonlinear diffusion waves (the fundamental solution of the viscous Burgers equation) in asymptotic expansions of solutions as $t\to\infty$. Moreover, for certain aggregation kernels, we show a concentration of solution on an initial time interval, which resemble a phenomenon of the spike creation, typical in chemotaxis models.
