Magnetic field induces giant nonlinear optical response in Weyl semimetals

We study the second-order optical response of Weyl semimetals in the presence of a magnetic field. We consider an idealized model of a perfectly linear Weyl node and use the Kubo formula at zero temperature to calculate the intrinsic contribution to photocurrent and second harmonic generation conductivity components. We obtain exact analytical expressions applicable at arbitrary values of frequency, chemical potential, and magnetic field. Our results show that finite magnetic field significantly enhances the nonlinear optical response in semimetals, while magnetic resonances lead to divergences in nonlinear conductivity. In realistic systems, these singularities are regularized by a finite scattering rate, but result in pronounced peaks which can be detected experimentally, provided the system is clean and interactions are weak. We also perform a semiclassical calculation that complements and confirms our microscopic results at small magnetic fields and frequencies.

Theory of Moire Magnets and Topological Magnons: Applications to Twisted Bilayer CrI3

We develop a comprehensive theory of twisted bilayer magnetism. Starting from the first-principles calculations of two-dimensional honeycomb magnet CrI3, we construct the generic spin models that represent a broad class of twisted bilayer magnetic systems. Using Monte-Carlo method, we discover a variety of non-collinear magnetic orders and topological magnons that have been overlooked in the previous theoretical and experimental studies. As a function of the twist angle, the collinear magnetic order undergoes the phase transitions to the non-collinear order and the magnetic domain phase. In the magnetic domain phase, we find that the spatially varying interlayer coupling produces the magnetic skyrmions even in the absence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. In addition, we describe the critical phenomena of the magnetic phase transitions by constructing the field theoretical model of the moire magnet. Our continuum model well-explains the nature of the phase transitions observed in the numerical simulations. Finally, we classify the topological properties of the magnon excitations. The magnons in each phases are characterized by the distinct mass gaps with different physical origins. In the collinear ferromagnetic order, the higher-order topological magnonic insulator phase occurs. It serves as a unique example of the higher-order topological phase in magnonic system, since it does not require non-collinear order or asymmetric form of the interactions. In the magnetic domain phases, the magnons are localized along the domain wall and form one-dimensional topological edge mode. As the closed domain walls deform to a open network, the confined edge mode extends to form a network model of the topological magnons.

Topological Signatures in Nodal Semimetals through Neutron Scattering

Topological nodal semimetals are known to host a variety of fascinating electronic properties due to the topological protection of the band-touching nodes. Neutron scattering, despite its power in probing elementary excitations, has not been routinely applied to topological semimetals, mainly due to the lack of an explicit connection between the neutron response and the signature of topology. In this work, we theoretically investigate the role that neutron scattering can play to unveil the topological nodal features: a large magnetic neutron response with spectral non-analyticity can be generated solely from the nodal bands. A new formula for the dynamical structure factor for generic topological nodal metals is derived. For Weyl semimetals, we show that the locations of Weyl nodes, the Fermi velocities and the signature of chiral anomaly can all leave hallmark neutron spectral responses. Our work offers a neutron-based avenue towards probing bulk topological materials.

Weyl hydrodynamics in a strong magnetic field

We study the hydrodynamic transport of electrons in a Weyl semimetal in a strong magnetic field. Impurity scattering in a Weyl semimetal with two Weyl nodes is strongly anisotropic as a function of the direction of the field and is significantly suppressed if the field is perpendicular to the separation between the nodes in momentum space. This allows for convenient access to the hydrodynamic regime of transport, in which electron scattering is dominated by interactions rather than by impurities. In a strong magnetic field, electrons move predominantly parallel to the direction of the field, and the flow of the electron liquid in a Weyl-semimetal junction resembles the Poiseuille flow of a liquid in a pipe. We compute the viscosity of the Weyl liquid microscopically and find that it weakly depends on the magnetic field and has the temperature dependence $η(T)\propto T^2$. The hydrodynamic flow of the Weyl liquid can be generated by a temperature gradient. The hydrodynamic regime in a Weyl-semimetal junction can be probed via the thermal conductance $G_q(B,T)\propto B^2 T$ of the junction.

Antiferromagnetism and spin density waves in 3D Dirac semimetals

We perform mean-field study of possible magnetic instabilities in Dirac semimetals. We find that Dirac electrons naturally host antiferromagnetic or spin density wave ground states, though their specific configurations may vary depending on specific model, as well as chemical potential and temperature. We also discuss paramagnetic susceptibility of Dirac semimetals. In the cases, when Dirac electrons do not have orbital momentum, the magnetic properties may be $μ$ and $T$ independent.

Emergent Lorentz invariance from Strong Dynamics: Holographic examples

We explore the phenomenon of emergent Lorentz invariance in strongly coupled theories. The strong dynamics is handled using the gauge/gravity correspondence. We analyze how the renormalization group flow towards Lorentz invariance is reflected in the two-point functions of local operators and in the dispersion relations of the bound states. The deviations of these observables from the relativistic form at low energies are found to be power-law suppressed by the ratio of the infrared and ultraviolet scales. We show that in a certain subclass of models the velocities of the light bound states stay close to the emergent `speed of light' even at high energies. We comment on the implications of our results for particle physics and condensed matter.

Fermionic zero modes in the vortex field in arbitrary dimensions and index of Dirac operator with Majorana-like interaction

In this work we consider fermionic zero modes in the external scalar and electromagnetic field forming the vortex on a sphere. We find the correspondence between the equations for the fermions in different dimensions, find their explicit expressions through the vortex fields in case of massless fermions, asymptotics near the poles in case of massive fermions and check the number of the solutions by proving index theorem for the fermions on a sphere. As a part of deriving the index, we write a detailed calculation of the Green function of the Heat equation.
