A note on certain scenarios of Type II blowups of suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations

In the note, various scenarios of potential Type II blowups of suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations are studied. It is shown, that under some assumptions, such type of blowups cannot happen. In this case, corresponding statements may be interpreted as regularity results. Their justification is based on a technique making use of a certain Euler scaling and Liouville type theorems for ancient solutions to the Euler system.

Regularity of Solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in B˙∞,∞−1\dot{B}_{\infty,\infty}^{-1}

We prove that if uu is a suitable weak solution to the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations from the space L∞(0,T;B˙∞,∞−1)L_{\infty}(0,T;\dot{B}_{\infty,\infty}^{-1}), then all scaled energy quantities of uu are bounded. As a consequence, it is shown that any axially symmetric suitable weak solution uu, belonging to L∞(0,T;B˙∞,∞−1)L_{\infty}(0,T;\dot{B}_{\infty,\infty}^{-1}), is smooth.

On Divergence-free Drifts

We investigate the validity and failure of Liouville theorems and Harnack inequalities for parabolic and elliptic operators with low regularity coefficients. We are particularly interested in operators of the form ∂t−Δ+b⋅∇\partial_t - Δ+b\cdot\nabla and −Δ+b⋅∇-Δ+b\cdot\nabla with a divergence-free drift bb. We prove the Liouville theorem and Harnack inequality when b∈L∞(BMO−1)b\in L_\infty(BMO^{-1}) resp. b∈BMO−1b\in BMO^{-1} and provide a counterexample to such results demonstrating sharpness of our conditions on the drift. Our results generalize to divergence-form operators with an elliptic symmetric part and a BMO skew-symmetric part. We also prove the existence of a modulus of continuity for solutions to the elliptic problem in two dimensions, depending on the non-scale-invariant norm ∥b∥L1\|b\|_{L_1}. In three dimensions, on the other hand, bounded solutions with L1L_1 drifts may be discontinuous.
