The Chern-Simons Caps for Rotating Black Holes

We study the dynamical Chern-Simons gravity as an effective quantum field theory, and discuss a broad range of its parameter space where the theory is valid. Within that validity range, we show that slowly rotating black holes acquire novel geometric structures due to the gravitational dynamical Chern-Simons term. In particular, the rotating black hole solutions get endowed with two, cap-like domains, emanating from the north and south poles in the standard Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. The domains extend out to a distance that is approximately a few percent of the black hole's size. The cap-like domains have an unusual equation of state, pointing to non-standard dynamics within the caps. In particular, the focusing condition for geodesics is violated in those domains. This in turn implies that the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorem cannot be straightforwardly applied to hypothetical probe matter placed within the Chern-Simons caps.

Conformal/Poincaré Coset, Cosmology, and Descendants of Lovelock Terms

We calculate six invariant terms of a gravitational field theory that nonlinearly realizes the Conformal/Poincaré quotient, and reduce to the known conformal Galileons in the limit when only the conformal mode is kept. Five of the six terms are regular coset terms, while the sixth is a Wess-Zumino (WZ) term that gives the well-known gravitational action for the trace anomaly. The obtained terms can be embedded in a quantum effective field theory (EFT) without spoiling their key features, although at a cost of certain fine tunings. The additional massive modes that appear in the EFT would have been troublesome, however, for sub-Planckian curvatures their masses are (super)-Planckian and therefore the respective states are outside of the EFT regime. We discuss certain novel cosmological solution of this theory and their validity within the EFT. Furthermore, we show that the obtained 4D terms, except the WZ term, can also be derived from higher dimensional Lovelock terms by reducing the latter to the genuinely four dimensional terms according to a well-defined algorithm.

Metamorphosis of the Cosmological Constant and 5D Origin of the Fiducial Metric

In a recently proposed theory, the cosmological constant (CC) does not curve spacetime in our universe, but instead gets absorbed into another universe endowed with its own dynamical metric, nonlocally coupled to ours. Thus, one achieves a long standing goal of removing entirely any cosmological constant from our universe. Dark energy then cannot be due to a cosmological constant, but must be obtained via other mechanisms. Here we focus on the scenario in which dark energy is due to massive gravity and its extensions. We show how the metric of the other universe, that absorbs our CC, also gives rise to the fiducial metric known to be necessary for the diffeomorphism invariant formulation of massive gravity. This is achieved in a framework where the other universe is described by 5D AdS gravity, while our universe lives on its boundary and is endowed with dynamical massive gravity. A non-dynamical pullback of the bulk AdS metric acts as the fiducial metric for massive gravity on the boundary. This framework also removes a difficulty caused by the quantum strongly coupled behavior of massive gravity at the Lambda3 scale: in the present approach, the massive gravity action does not receive any loop-induced counterterms, despite being strongly coupled.

Field Theory for Zero Sound and Ion Acoustic Wave in Astrophysical Matter

We set up a field theory model to describe the longitudinal low energy modes in high density matter present in white dwarf stars. At the relevant scales, ions -- the nuclei of oxygen, carbon and helium -- are treated as heavy point-like spin-0 charged particles in an effective field theory approach, while the electron dynamics is described by the Dirac Lagrangian at the one-loop level. We show that there always exists a longitudinal gapless mode in the system irrespective whether the ions are in a plasma, crystal, or quantum liquid state. For certain values of the parameters, the gapless mode can be interpreted as a zero sound mode and, for other values, as an ion acoustic wave; we show that the zero sound and ion acoustic wave are complementary to each other. We discuss possible physical consequences of these modes for properties of white dwarfs.

Unparticles as the Holographic Dual of Gapped AdS Gravity

Naively applying holographic duality to gapped gravity on Anti de Sitter (AdS) space seems to suggest that the stress tensor of the field theory dual cannot be conserved. On the other hand, by symmetry arguments, it seems that the dual should not violate Poincare symmetry. To clarify this apparent contradiction, we study a holographic dual of massive gravity where both the physical background metric and the fiducial metric are AdS. Using the anomalous scaling of the energy momentum tensor as our guide, we conclude that the dual theory is nonlocal. We find that the dual is similar to conformal invariant "unparticle" theories. We show that such theories can be viewed as dimensional reductions of flat-space field theories with inhomogeneous scaling properties.

Selfacceleration with Quasidilaton

Quasidilaton massive gravity is an extension of massive General Relativity to a theory with additional scale invariance and approximate internal Galilean symmetry. The theory has a novel self-accelerated solution with the metric indistinguishable (in the decoupling limit) from the de Sitter space, its curvature set by the graviton mass. The spectra of tensor, vector, and scalar perturbations on this solution contain neither ghosts, nor gradient instabilities or superluminal modes, for a range of the parameter space. This represents an example of a self-accelerated solution with viable perturbations, attainable within a low energy effective field theory.

The Big Constant Out, The Small Constant In

Some time ago, Tseytlin has made an original and unusual proposal for an action that eliminates an arbitrary cosmological constant. The form of the proposed action, however, is strongly modified by gravity loop effects, ruining its benefit. Here I discuss an embedding of Tseytlin's action into a broader context, that enables to control the loop effects. The broader context is another universe, with its own metric and dynamics, but only globally connected to ours. One possible Lagrangian for the other universe is that of unbroken AdS supergravity. A vacuum energy in our universe does not produce any curvature for us, but instead increases or decreases the AdS curvature in the other universe. I comment on how to introduce the accelerated expansion in this framework in a technically natural way, and consider the case where this is done by the self-accelerated solutions of massive gravity and its extensions.

Vainshtein Solutions Without Superluminal Modes

The Vainshtein mechanism suppresses the fifth force at astrophysical distances, while enabling it to compete with gravity at cosmological scales. Typically, Vainshtein solutions exhibit superluminal perturbations. However, a restricted class of solutions with special boundary conditions were shown to be devoid of the faster-than-light modes. Here we extend this class by finding solutions in a theory of quasidilaton, amended by derivative terms consistent with its symmetries. Solutions with Minkowski asymptotics are not stable, while the ones that exhibit the Vainshtein mechanism by transitioning to cosmological backgrounds are free of ghosts, tachyons, gradient instability, and superluminality, for all propagating modes present in the theory. These solutions require special choice of the strength and signs of nonlinear terms, as well as a choice of asymptotic cosmological boundary conditions.

Novel Probes of Gravity and Dark Energy

The discovery of cosmic acceleration has stimulated theorists to consider dark energy or modifications to Einstein's General Relativity as possible explanations. The last decade has seen advances in theories that go beyond smooth dark energy -- modified gravity and interactions of dark energy. While the theoretical terrain is being actively explored, the generic presence of fifth forces and dark sector couplings suggests a set of distinct observational signatures. This report focuses on observations that differ from the conventional probes that map the expansion history or large-scale structure. Examples of such novel probes are: detection of scalar fields via lab experiments, tests of modified gravity using stars and galaxies in the nearby universe, comparison of lensing and dynamical masses of galaxies and clusters, and the measurements of fundamental constants at high redshift. The observational expertise involved is very broad as it spans laboratory experiments, high resolution astronomical imaging and spectroscopy and radio observations. In the coming decade, searches for these effects have the potential for discovering fundamental new physics. We discuss how the searches can be carried out using experiments that are already under way or with modest adaptations of existing telescopes or planned experiments. The accompanying paper on the Growth of Cosmic Structure describes complementary tests of gravity with observations of large-scale structure.

On Cosmological Perturbations of Quasidilaton

A theory of the quasidilaton is an extension of massive gravity by a scalar field, nonlinearly realizing a certain new global symmetry of the Lagrangian. It has been shown that unlike pure massive gravity, this theory does admit homogeneous and isotropic spatially flat solutions. Among the latter, selfaccelerated solutions attract a special attention. Previous studies of perturbations, performed in the decoupling limit, revealed one healthy scalar mode, while the second relevant scalar was not captured in that limit. Here we study full cosmological perturbations above the simplest selfaccelerated background. We show that the fluctuations of a mixed state of the quasidilaton and the helicity-0 graviton necessarily have a negative kinetic term at short distances, making this background unphysical. In addition, these cosmologies exhibit an order one sensitivity to higher dimensional terms suppressed by an energy scale that is parametrically higher than the strong coupling scale of the quasidilaton effective theory: such terms include Galileons, Goldstone-like selfinteractions and derivatives of the quasidilaton coupled to curvature, none of which introduce extra Ostrogradsky states. As one consequence, cosmology at the Hubble distances for this particular class of solutions depends on an unknown extension of the quasidilaton below its strong coupling distance scale. We note that non-FRW solutions that are similar to those of pure massive gravity should not necessarily suffer from these pathologies.

On the Potential for General Relativity and its Geometry

The unique ghost-free mass and nonlinear potential terms for general relativity are presented in a diffeomorphism and local Lorentz invariant vierbein formalism. This construction requires an additional two-index Stuckelberg field, beyond the four scalar fields used in the metric formulation, and unveils a new local SL(4) symmetry group of the mass and potential terms, not shared by the Einstein-Hilbert term. The new field is auxiliary but transforms as a vector under two different Lorentz groups, one of them the group of local Lorentz transformations, the other an additional global group. This formulation enables a geometric interpretation of the mass and potential terms for gravity in terms of certain volume forms. Furthermore, we find that the decoupling limit is much simpler to extract in this approach; in particular, we are able to derive expressions for the interactions of the vector modes. We also note that it is possible to extend the theory by promoting the two-index auxiliary field into a Nambu-Goldstone boson nonlinearly realizing a certain space-time symmetry, and show how it is "eaten up" by the antisymmetric part of the vierbein.

Restricted Galileons

We study Galileon theories that emerge in ghost-free massive gravity. In particular, we focus on a sub-class of these theories where the Galileons can be completely decoupled from the tensor Lagrangian. These Galileons differ from generic ones -- they have interrelated coefficients of the cubic and quartic terms, and most importantly, a non-standard coupling to external stress-tensors, governed by the same coefficient. We show that this theory has no static stable spherically symmetric solutions that would interpolate from the Vainshtein region to flat space; these two regions cannot be smoothly matched for the sign of the coefficient for which fluctuations are stable. Instead, for this sign choice, a solution in the Vainshtein domain is matched onto a cosmological background. Small fluctuations above this solution are stable, and sub-luminal. We discuss observational constraints on this theory, within the quantum effective Lagrangian approach, and argue that having a graviton mass of the order of the present-day Hubble parameter, is consistent with the data. Last but not least, we also present a general class of cosmological solutions in this theory, some of which exhibit the de-mixing phenomenon, previously found for the self-accelerated solution.

A Covariant Master Theory for Novel Galilean Invariant Models and Massive Gravity

Coupling the galileons to a curved background has been a tradeoff between maintaining second order equations of motion, maintaining the galilean shift symmetries, and allowing the background metric to be dynamical. We propose a construction which can achieve all three for a novel class of galilean invariant models, by coupling a scalar with the galilean symmetry to a massive graviton. This generalizes the brane construction for galileons, by adding to the brane a dynamical metric, (non-universally) interacting with the galileon field. Alternatively, it can be thought of as an extension of the ghost-free massive gravity, or as a massive graviton-galileon scalar-tensor theory. In the decoupling limit of these theories, new kinds of galileon invariant interactions arise between the scalar and the longitudinal mode of the graviton. These have higher order equations of motion and infinite powers of the field, yet are ghost-free.

Classical Duals of Derivatively Self-Coupled Theories

Solutions to scalar theories with derivative self-couplings often have regions where non-linearities are important. Given a classical source, there is usually a region, demarcated by the Vainshtein radius, inside of which the classical non-linearities are dominant, while quantum effects are still negligible. If perturbation theory is used to find such solutions, the expansion generally breaks down as the Vainshtein radius is approached from the outside. Here we show that it is possible, by integrating in certain auxiliary fields, to reformulate these theories in such a way that non-linearities become small inside the Vainshtein radius, and large outside it. This provides a complementary, or classically dual, description of the same theory -- one in which non-perturbative regions become accessible perturbatively. We consider a few examples of classical solutions with various symmetries, and find that in all the cases the dual formulation makes it rather simple to study regimes in which the original perturbation theory fails to work. As an illustration, we reproduce by perturbative calculations some of the already known non-perturbative results, for a point-like source, cosmic string, and domain wall, and derive a new one. The dual formulation may be useful for developing the PPN formalism in the theories of modified gravity that give rise to such scalar theories.

Non-Renormalization and Naturalness in a Class of Scalar-Tensor Theories

We study the renormalization of some dimension-4, 7 and 10 operators in a class of nonlinear scalar-tensor theories. These theories are invariant under: (a) linear diffeomorphisms which represent an exact symmetry of the full non-linear action, and (b) global field-space Galilean transformations of the scalar field. The Lagrangian contains a set of non-topological interaction terms of the above-mentioned dimensionality, which we show are not renormalized at any order in perturbation theory. We also discuss the renormalization of other operators, that may be generated by loops and/or receive loop-corrections, and identify the regime in which they are sub-leading with respect to the operators that do not get renormalized. Interestingly, such scalar-tensor theories emerge in a certain high-energy limit of the ghost-free theory of massive gravity. One can use the non-renormalization properties of the high-energy limit to estimate the magnitude of quantum corrections in the full theory. We show that the quantum corrections to the three free parameters of the model, one of them being the graviton mass, are strongly suppressed. In particular, we show that having an arbitrarily small graviton mass is technically natural.

Comments on (super)luminality

Recently, in an interesting work arXiv:1106.3972 a solution of the equations of motion of massive gravity was discussed, and it was shown that one of the fluctuations on that solution is superluminal. It was also stated that this rules out massive gravity. Here we find that the solution itself is rather unphysical. For this we show that there is another mode on the same background which grows and overcomes the background in an arbitrarily short period of time, that can be excited by a negligible cost in energy. This solution is triggered by the parameter governing the superluminality. Furthermore, we also show that the solution, if viewed as a perfect fluid, has no rest frame, or that the Lorentz transformation that is needed to boost to the rest frame is superluminal itself. The stress-tensor of this fluid has complex eigenvalues, and could not be obtained from any physically sensible matter. Moreover, for the same setup we find another background solution, fluctuations of which are all stable and subluminal. Based on these results, we conclude that the superluminality found in arXiv:1106.3972 is an artifact of using an inappropriate background, nevertheless, this solution represents an instructive example for understanding massive gravity. For instance, on this background the Boulware-Deser ghost is absent, even though this may naively appear not to be the case.

Ghost free Massive Gravity in the Stückelberg language

Massive Gravity in four dimensions has been shown to be free of the Boulware-Deser (BD) ghost in the ADM language for a specific choice of mass terms. We show here how this is consistent with the Stückelberg language beyond the decoupling limit, and how the constraint required to remove the BD ghost arises in this framework nonperturbatively, without the use of field redefinitions. We emphasize a subtlety in obtaining this constraint, that has been overlooked in previous literature. In both the ADM and Stückelberg formalisms the vanishing of the determinant of a Hessian guarantees the absence of the BD ghost.

Helicity Decomposition of Ghost-free Massive Gravity

We perform a helicity decomposition in the full Lagrangian of the class of Massive Gravity theories previously proven to be free of the sixth (ghost) degree of freedom via a Hamiltonian analysis. We demonstrate, both with and without the use of nonlinear field redefinitions, that the scale at which the first interactions of the helicity-zero mode come in is $Λ_3=(M_Pl m^2)^{1/3}$, and that this is the same scale at which helicity-zero perturbation theory breaks down. We show that the number of propagating helicity modes remains five in the full nonlinear theory with sources. We clarify recent misconceptions in the literature advocating the existence of either a ghost or a breakdown of perturbation theory at the significantly lower energy scales, $Λ_5=(M_Pl m^4)^{1/5}$ or $Λ_4=(M_Pl m^3)^{1/4}$, which arose because relevant terms in those calculations were overlooked. As an interesting byproduct of our analysis, we show that it is possible to derive the Stueckelberg formalism from the helicity decomposition, without ever invoking diffeomorphism invariance, just from a simple requirement that the kinetic terms of the helicity-two, -one and -zero modes are diagonalized.

Nonlinear Dynamics of 3D Massive Gravity

We explore the nonlinear classical dynamics of the three-dimensional theory of "New Massive Gravity" proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend. We find that the theory passes remarkably highly nontrivial consistency checks at the nonlinear level. In particular, we show that: (1) In the decoupling limit of the theory, the interactions of the helicity-0 mode are described by a single cubic term -- the so-called cubic Galileon -- previously found in the context of the DGP model and in certain 4D massive gravities. (2) The conformal mode of the metric coincides with the helicity-0 mode in the decoupling limit. Away from this limit the nonlinear dynamics of the former is described by a certain generalization of Galileon interactions, which like the Galileons themselves have a well-posed Cauchy problem. (3) We give a non-perturbative argument based on the presence of additional symmetries that the full theory does not lead to any extra degrees of freedom, suggesting that a 3D analog of the 4D Boulware-Deser ghost is not present in this theory. Last but not least, we generalize "New Massive Gravity" and construct a class of 3D cubic order massive models that retain the above properties.

Cosmic Acceleration and the Helicity-0 Graviton

We explore cosmology in the decoupling limit of a non-linear covariant extension of Fierz-Pauli massive gravity obtained recently in arXiv:1007.0443. In this limit the theory is a scalar-tensor model of a unique form defined by symmetries. We find that it admits a self-accelerated solution, with the Hubble parameter set by the graviton mass. The negative pressure causing the acceleration is due to a condensate of the helicity-0 component of the massive graviton, and the background evolution, in the approximation used, is indistinguishable from the ΛCDM model. Fluctuations about the self-accelerated background are stable for a certain range of parameters involved. Most surprisingly, the fluctuation of the helicity-0 field above its background decouples from an arbitrary source in the linearized theory. We also show how massive gravity can remarkably screen an arbitrarily large cosmological constant in the decoupling limit, while evading issues with ghosts. The obtained static solution is stable against small perturbations, suggesting that the degravitation of the vacuum energy is possible in the full theory. Interestingly, however, this mechanism postpones the Vainshtein effect to shorter distance scales. Hence, fifth force measurements severely constrain the value of the cosmological constant that can be neutralized, making this scheme phenomenologically not viable for solving the old cosmological constant problem. We briefly speculate on a possible way out of this issue.

Field Theory for a Deuteron Quantum Liquid

Based on general symmetry principles we study an effective Lagrangian for a neutral system of condensed spin-1 deuteron nuclei and electrons, at greater-than-atomic but less-than-nuclear densities. We expect such matter to be present in thin layers within certain low-mass brown dwarfs. It may also be produced in future shock-wave-compression experiments as an effective fuel for laser induced nuclear fusion. We find a background solution of the effective theory describing a net spin zero condensate of deuterons with their spins aligned and anti-aligned in a certain spontaneously emerged preferred direction. The spectrum of low energy collective excitations contains two spin waves with linear dispersions -- like in antiferromagnets -- as well as gapped longitudinal and transverse modes related to the Meissner effect -- like in superconductors. We show that counting of the Nambu-Goldstone modes of spontaneously broken internal and space-time symmetries obeys, in a nontrivial way, the rules of the Goldstone theorem for Lorentz non-invariant systems. We discuss thermodynamic properties of the condensate, and its potential manifestation in the low-mass brown dwarfs.

Generalization of the Fierz-Pauli Action

We consider the Lagrangian of gravity covariantly amended by the mass and polynomial interaction terms with arbitrary coefficients, and reinvestigate the consistency of such a theory in the decoupling limit, up to the fifth order in the nonlinearities. We calculate explicitly the self-interactions of the helicity-0 mode, as well as the nonlinear mixing between the helicity-0 and -2 modes. We show that ghost-like pathologies in these interactions disappear for special choices of the polynomial interactions, and argue that this result remains true to all orders in the decoupling limit. Moreover, we show that the linear, and some of the nonlinear mixing terms between the helicity-0 and -2 modes can be absorbed by a local change of variables, which then naturally generates the cubic, quartic, and quintic Galileon interactions, introduced in a different context. We also point out that the mixing between the helicity-0 and 2 modes can be at most quartic in the decoupling limit. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for the consistency of the effective field theory away from the decoupling limit, and for the Boulware-Deser problem.

Resummation of Massive Gravity

We construct four-dimensional covariant non-linear theories of massive gravity which are ghost-free in the decoupling limit to all orders. These theories resum explicitly all the nonlinear terms of an effective field theory of massive gravity. We show that away from the decoupling limit the Hamiltonian constraint is maintained at least up to and including quartic order in non-linearities, hence, excluding the possibility of the Boulware-Deser ghost up to this order. We also show that the same remains true to all orders in a similar toy-model.

Selftuned Massive Spin-2

We calculate the cubic order terms in a covariant theory that gives a nonlinear completion of the Fierz-Pauli massive spin-2 action. The resulting terms have specially tuned coefficients guarantying the absence of a ghost at this order in the decoupling limit. We show in this limit that: (1) The quadratic theory propagates helicity-2, 1, and helicity-0 states of massive spin-2. (2) The cubic terms with six derivatives -- which would give ghosts on local backgrounds -- cancel out automatically. (3) There is a four-derivative cubic term for the helicity-0 field, that has been known to be ghost-free on any local background. (4) There are four-derivative cubic terms that mix two helicity-0 fields with one helicity-2, or two helicity-1 fields with one helicity-0; none of them give ghosts on local backgrounds. (5) In the absence of external sources, all the cubic mixing terms can be removed by nonlinear redefinitions of the helicity-2 and helicity-1 fields. Notably, the helicity-2 redefinition generates the quartic Galileon term. These findings hint to an underlying nonlinearly realized symmetry, that should be responsible for what appears as the accidental cancellation of the ghost.

Effective Field Theory for Quantum Liquid in Dwarf Stars

An effective field theory approach is used to describe quantum matter at greater-than-atomic but less-than-nuclear densities which are encountered in white dwarf stars. We focus on the density and temperature regime for which charged spin-0 nuclei form an interacting charged Bose-Einstein condensate, while the neutralizing electrons form a degenerate fermi gas. After a brief introductory review, we summarize distinctive properties of the charged condensate, such as a mass gap in the bosonic sector as well as gapless fermionic excitations. Charged impurities placed in the condensate are screened with great efficiency, greater than in an equivalent uncondensed plasma. We discuss a generalization of the Friedel potential which takes into account bosonic collective excitations in addition to the fermionic excitations. We argue that the charged condensate could exist in helium-core white dwarf stars and discuss the evolution of these dwarfs. Condensation would lead to a significantly faster rate of cooling than that of carbon- or oxygen-core dwarfs with crystallized cores. This prediction can be tested observationally: signatures of charged condensation may have already been seen in the recently discovered sequence of helium-core dwarfs in the nearby globular cluster NGC 6397. Sufficiently strong magnetic fields can penetrate the condensate within Abrikosov-like vortices. We find approximate analytic vortex solutions and calculate the values of the lower and upper critical magnetic fields at which vortices are formed and destroyed respectively. The lower critical field is within the range of fields observed in white dwarfs, but tends toward the higher end of this interval. This suggests that for a significant fraction of helium-core dwarfs, magnetic fields are entirely expelled within the core.

General Relativity With An Auxiliary Dimension

I consider an extension of General Relativity by an auxiliary non-dynamical dimension that enables our space-time to acquire an extrinsic curvature. Obtained gravitational equations, without or with a cosmological constant, have a selfaccelerated solution that is independent of the value of the cosmological constant, and can describe the cosmic speedup of the Universe as a geometric effect. Background evolution of the selfaccelerated solution is identical to that of ordinary de Sitter space. I show that linear perturbations on this solution describe either a massless graviton, or a massive graviton and a scalar, which are free of ghosts and tachyons for certain choices of boundary conditions. The obtained linearized expressions suggest that nonlinear interactions should, for certain boundary conditions, be strongly coupled, although this issue is not studied here. The full nonlinear Hamiltonian of the theory is shown to be positive for the selfaccelerated solution, while in general, it reduces to surface terms in our and auxiliary dimensions.

Quantum Liquid Signatures in Dwarf Stars

We develop further the proposal of arXiv:0806.3692 that a new state of matter -- charged condensate of spin-0 nuclei -- may exist in helium-core dwarf stars. The charged condensate and its fluctuations are described by an effective field theory Lagrangian. The spectrum of bosonic fluctuations is gapped, while electrons, at temperatures of interest, give rise to gapless excitations near the Fermi surface. These properties determine the evolution of the dwarfs with condensed cores. In particular, we show that such dwarf stars would cool significantly faster than their crystallized counterparts. As a result, the luminosity function for the helium-core dwarfs will have a sharp drop-off after the condensation. It is tempting to interpret the recently discovered abrupt termination of a sequence of 24 helium-core dwarf candidates in NGC 6397 as a signature of the charged condensation.

Strongly Coupled Condensate of High Density Matter

Arguments are summarized, that neutral matter made of helium, carbon, etc., should form a quantum liquid at the above-atomic but below-nuclear densities for which the charged spin-0 nuclei can condense. The resulting substance has distinctive features, such as a mass gap in the bosonic sector and a gap-less spectrum of quasifermions, which determine its thermodynamic properties. I discuss an effective field theory description of this substance, and as an example, consider its application to calculation of a static potential between heavy charged impurities. The potential exhibits a long-range oscillatory behavior in which both the fermionic and bosonic low-energy degree of freedom contribute. Observational consequences of the condensate for cooling of helium-core white dwarf stars are briefly discussed.

preprint2008arXiv

Charged Condensate and Helium Dwarf Stars

White dwarf stars composed of carbon, oxygen or heavier elements are expected to crystallize as they cool down below certain temperatures. Yet, simple arguments suggest that the helium white dwarf cores may not solidify, mostly because of zero-point oscillations of the helium ions that would dissolve the crystalline structure. We argue that the interior of the helium dwarfs may instead form a macroscopic quantum state in which the charged helium-4 nuclei are in a Bose-Einstein condensate, while the relativistic electrons form a neutralizing degenerate Fermi liquid. We discuss the electric charge screening, and the spectrum of this substance, showing that the bosonic long-wavelength fluctuations exhibit a mass gap. Hence, there is a suppression at low temperatures of the boson contribution to the specific heat -- the latter being dominated by the specific heat of the electrons near the Fermi surface. This state of matter may have observational signatures.

Special Massive Spin-2 on de Sitter Space

The theory of a massive spin-2 state on the de Sitter space -- with the mass squared equal to one sixth of the curvature -- is special for two reasons: (i) it exhibits an enhanced local symmetry; (ii) it emerges as a part of the model that gives rise to the self-accelerated Universe. The known problems of this theory are: either it cannot be coupled to a non-conformal conserved stress-tensor because of the enhanced symmetry, or it propagates a ghost-like state when the symmetry is constrained by the Lagrange multiplier method. Here we propose a solution to these problems in the linearized approximation.

Lorentz-violating massive gauge and gravitational fields

We study nonlinear dynamics in models of Lorentz-violating massive gravity. The Boulware-Deser instability restricts severely the class of acceptable theories. We identify a model that is stable. It exhibits the following bizarre but interesting property: there are only two massive propagating degrees of freedom in the spectrum, and yet long-range instantaneous interactions are present in the theory. We discuss this property on a simpler example of a photon with a Lorentz-violating mass term where the issues of (a)causality are easier to understand. Depending on the values of the mass parameter these models can either be excluded, or become phenomenologically interesting. We discuss a similar example with more degrees of freedom, as well as a model without the long-range instantaneous interactions.

Scales of Gravity

We propose a framework in which the quantum gravity scale can be as low as $10^{-3}$ eV. The key assumption is that the Standard Model ultraviolet cutoff is much higher than the quantum gravity scale. This ensures that we observe conventional weak gravity. We construct an explicit brane-world model in which the brane-localized Standard Model is coupled to strong 5D gravity of infinite-volume flat extra space. Due to the high ultraviolet scale, the Standard Model fields generate a large graviton kinetic term on the brane. This kinetic term ``shields'' the Standard Model from the strong bulk gravity. As a result, an observer on the brane sees weak 4D gravity up to astronomically large distances beyond which gravity becomes five-dimensional. Modeling quantum gravity above its scale by the closed string spectrum we show that the shielding phenomenon protects the Standard Model from an apparent phenomenological catastrophe due to the exponentially large number of light string states. The collider experiments, astrophysics, cosmology and gravity measurements {\it independently} point to the same lower bound on the quantum gravity scale, $10^{-3}$ eV. For this value the model has experimental signatures both for colliders and for sub-millimeter gravity measurements. Black holes reveal certain interesting properties in this framework.

Constraints on Extra Time Dimensions

We discuss phenomenology of extra time dimensions in a scenario where the standard model particles are localized in ``our'' time, whereas gravity can propagate in all time dimensions. For an odd number of extra times, at small distances, the (real part of the) Newtonian potential is ``screened'' by tachyonic Kaluza-Klein gravitons. In general, the gravitational self-energy of objects acquires an imaginary part. This complexity may either be interpreted as an amplitude for the disappearance into ``nothing'', leading to the causality and probability violation in low-energy processes, or as an artifact of the fictitious decay into the unphysical negative energy tachyons. The former case would put the most severe phenomenological restrictions on such theories. In the latter case the size of extra times may be within the reach of the proposed gravitational experiments. In such a case these experiments should observe that the strength of the Newtonian gravity diminishes at short distances.

Non-conservation of Global Charges in the Brane Universe and Baryogenesis

We argue that global charges, such as baryon or lepton number, are not conserved in theories with the Standard Model fields localized on the brane which propagates in higher-dimensional space-time. The global-charge non-conservation is due to quantum fluctuations of the brane surface. These fluctuations create "baby branes" that can capture some global charges and carry them away into the bulk of higher-dimensional space. Such processes are exponentially suppressed at low-energies, but can be significant at high enough temperatures or energies. These effects can lead to a new, intrinsically high-dimensional mechanism of baryogenesis. Baryon asymmetry might be produced due either to "evaporation" into the baby branes, or creation of the baryon number excess in collisions of two Brane Universes. As an example we discuss a possible cosmological scenario within the recently proposed "Brane Inflation" framework. Inflation is driven by displaced branes which slowly fall on top of each other. When the branes collide inflation stops and the Brane Universe reheats. During this non-equilibrium collision baryon number can be transported from one brane to another one. This results in the baryon number excess in our Universe which exactly equals to the hidden "baryon number" deficit in the other Brane Universe.

On Field/String Theory Approach to Theta Dependence in Large N Yang-Mills Theory

The theta dependence of the vacuum energy in large N Yang-Mills theory has been studied some time ago by Witten using a duality of large N gauge theories with string theory compactified on a certain space-time. We show that within the field theory context vacuum fluctuations of the topological charge give rise to the vacuum energy consistent with the string theory computation. Furthermore, we calculate 1/N suppressed corrections to the string theory result. The reconciliation of the string and field theory approaches is based on the fact that the gauge theory instantons carry zerobrane charge in the corresponding D-brane construction of Yang-Mills theory. Given the formula for the vacuum energy we study certain aspects of stability of the false vacua of the model for different realizations of the initial conditions. The vacuum structure appears to be different depending on whether N is infinite or, alternatively, large but finite.
