Black Hole Metamorphosis and Stabilization by Memory Burden

Systems of enhanced memory capacity are subjected to a universal effect of memory burden, which suppresses their decay. In this paper, we study a prototype model to show that memory burden can be overcome by rewriting stored quantum information from one set of degrees of freedom to another one. However, due to a suppressed rate of rewriting, the evolution becomes extremely slow compared to the initial stage. Applied to black holes, this predicts a metamorphosis, including a drastic deviation from Hawking evaporation, at the latest after losing half of the mass. This raises a tantalizing question about the fate of a black hole. As two likely options, it can either become extremely long lived or decay via a new classical instability into gravitational lumps. The first option would open up a new window for small primordial black holes as viable dark matter candidates.

Perturbative Understanding of Non-Perturbative Processes and Quantumization versus Classicalization

In some instances of study of quantum evolution of classical backgrounds it is considered inevitable to resort to non-perturbative methods at the price of treating the system semiclassically. We show that a fully quantum perturbative treatment, in which the background is resolved as a multi-particle state, recovers the semiclassical non-perturbative results and allows going beyond. We reproduce particle-creation by a classical field in a theory of two scalars as well as in scalar QED in terms of scattering processes of high multiplicity. The multi-particle treatment also gives a transparent picture of why a single-process transition from a classical to a quantum state, which we call quantumization, is exponentially suppressed, whereas the opposite process, classicalization, can take place swiftly if the microstate degeneracy of the classical state is high. An example is provided by the $N$-graviton portrait of a black hole: a black hole can form efficiently via a $2\to N$ classicalization process in the collision of high-energy particles but its quantumization via a decay $N \to 2$ is exponentially suppressed.

Bounds on Quantum Information Storage and Retrieval

We present certain universal bounds on the capacity of quantum information storage and on the time scale of its retrieval for a generic quantum field theoretic system. The capacity, quantified by the microstate entropy, is bounded from above by the surface area of the object measured in units of a Goldstone decay constant. The Goldstone bosons are universally present due to the spontaneous breaking of Poincare and internal symmetries by the information-storing object. Applied to a black hole, the bound reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. However, the relation goes beyond gravity. The minimal time-scale required for retrieving the quantum information from a system is equal to its volume measured in units of the same Goldstone scale. For a black hole this reproduces the Page time as well as the quantum break-time. The same expression for the information retrieval time is shared by non-gravitational saturated states in gauge theories, including QCD. The saturated objects exhibit some universal signatures such as the emission of ultra-soft radiation. Similar bounds apply to non-relativistic many-body systems.

Classicalization and unitarization of wee partons in QCD and Gravity: The CGC-Black Hole correspondence

We discuss a remarkable correspondence between the description of Black Holes as highly occupied condensates of $N$ weakly interacting gravitons and that of Color Glass Condensates (CGCs) as highly occupied gluon states. In both cases, the dynamics of "wee partons" in Regge asymptotics is controlled by emergent semi-hard scales that lead to perturbative unitarization and classicalization of $2\rightarrow N$ particle amplitudes at weak coupling. In particular, they attain a maximal entropy permitted by unitarity, bounded by the inverse coupling $α$ of the respective constituents. Strikingly, this entropy is equal to the area measured in units of the Goldstone constant corresponding to the spontaneous breaking of Poincar{é} symmetry by the corresponding graviton or gluon condensate. In gravity, the Goldstone constant is the Planck scale, and gives rise to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Likewise, in the CGC, the corresponding Goldstone scale is determined by the onset of gluon screening. We point to further similarities in Black Hole formation, thermalization and decay, to that of the Glasma matter formed from colliding CGCs in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions, which decays into a Quark-Gluon Plasma.

How Special Are Black Holes? Correspondence with saturons in generic theories

Black holes are considered to be exceptional due to their time evolution and information processing. However, it was proposed recently that these properties are generic for objects, the so-called saturons, that attain the maximal entropy permitted by unitarity. In the present paper, we verify this connection within a renormalizable $SU(N)$ invariant theory. We show that the spectrum of the theory contains a tower of bubbles representing bound states of $SU(N)$ Goldstones. Despite the absence of gravity, a saturated bound state exhibits a striking correspondence with a black hole: Its entropy is given by the Bekenstein-Hawking formula; semi-classically, the bubble evaporates at a thermal rate with a temperature equal to its inverse radius; the information retrieval time is equal to Page's time. The correspondence goes through a trans-theoretic entity of Poincaré Goldstone. The black hole/saturon correspondence has important implications for black hole physics, both fundamental and observational.

Absence of $μ$-Problem in Grand Unification

Using properties of Goldstino, we show that in generic grand unified theories with gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking the $μ$-problem is non-existent. What happens is that supersymmetry breaking universally induces the shifts of the heavy fields that generate $μ$ and $B_μ$ terms. In the leading order, these are given by the mass of gravitino and are insensitive to the scale of grand unification. The mechanism works regardless whether doublet-triplet splitting is achieved via fine-tuning or not. Moreover, we illustrate this general phenomenon on explicit examples of theories that achieve doublet-triplet splitting dynamically. These include the theories with Higgs doublet as a pseudo-Goldstone boson, as well as, the approach based on spontaneous decoupling of the light color-triplet from quarks and leptons.

Compact Dark Matter Objects via $N$ Dark Sectors

We propose a novel class of compact dark matter objects in theories where the dark matter consists of multiple sectors. We call these objects $N$-MACHOs. In such theories neither the existence of dark matter species nor their extremely weak coupling to the observable sector represent additional hypotheses but instead are imposed by the solution to the Hierarchy Problem and unitarity. The crucial point is that particles from the same sector have non-trivial interactions but interact only gravitationally otherwise. As a consequence, the pressure that counteracts the gravitational collapse is reduced while the gravitational force remains the same. This results in collapsed structures much lighter and smaller as compared to the ordinary single-sector case. We apply this phenomenon to a dark matter theory that consists of $N$ dilute copies of the Standard Model. The solutions do not rely on an exotic stabilization mechanism, but rather use the same well-understood properties as known stellar structures. This framework also gives rise to new microscopic superheavy structures, for example with mass $10^8\,$g and size $10^{-13}\,$cm. By confronting the resulting objects with observational constraints, we find that, due to a huge suppression factor entering the mass spectrum, these objects evade the strongest constrained region of the parameter space. Finally, we discuss possible formation scenarios of $N$-MACHOs. We argue that, due to the efficient dissipation of energy on small scales, high-density regions such as ultra-compact mini-halos could serve as formation sites of $N$-MACHOs.

Inflation and Decoupling

Decoupling of heavy modes in effective low energy theory is one of the most fundamental concepts in physics. It tells us that modes must have a negligible effect on the physics of gravitational backgrounds with curvature radius larger than their wavelengths. Despite this, there exist claims that trans-Planckian modes put severe bound on the duration of inflation even when the Hubble parameter is negligible as compared to the Planck mass. If true, this would mean that inflation violates the principle of decoupling or at least requires its reformulation. We clarify the fundamental misconception on which these bounds are based and respectively refute them. Our conclusion is that inflation fully falls within the validity of a reliable effective field theory treatment and does not suffer from any spurious trans-Planckian problem.

Black Hole Based Quantum Computing in Labs and in the Sky

Analyzing some well established facts, we give a model-independent parameterization of black hole quantum computing in terms of a set of macro and micro quantities and their relations. These include the relations between the extraordinarily-small energy gap of black hole qubits and important time-scales of information-processing, such as, scrambling time and Page's time. We then show, confirming and extending previous results, that other systems of nature with identical quantum informatics features are attractive Bose-Einstein systems at the critical point of quantum phase transition. Here we establish a complete isomorphy between the quantum computational properties of these two systems. In particular, we show that the quantum hair of a critical condensate is strikingly similar to the quantum hair of a black hole. Irrespectively whether one takes the similarity between the two systems as a remarkable coincidence or as a sign of a deeper underlying connection, the following is evident. Black holes are not unique in their way of quantum information processing and we can manufacture black hole based quantum computers in labs by taking advantage of quantum criticality.

Goldstone origin of black hole hair from supertranslations and criticality

Degrees of freedom that carry black hole entropy and hair can be described in the language of Goldstone phenomenon. They represent the pseudo-Goldstone bosons of certain supertranslations, called A-transformations, that are spontaneously broken by the black hole metric. This breaking gives rise to a tower of Goldstone bosons created by the spontaneously-broken generators that can be labeled by spherical harmonics. Classically, the number of charges is infinite, they have vanishing VEVs and the corresponding Goldstone modes are gapless. The resulting hair and entropy are infinite, but unresolvable. In quantum theory the two things happen. The number of legitimate Goldstone modes restricted by requirement of weak-coupling, becomes finite and scales as black hole area in Planck units. The Goldstones generate a tiny gap, controlled by their gravitational coupling. The gap turns out to be equal to the inverse of black hole half-life, $t_{BH}$. Correspondingly, in quantum theory the charges are neither conserved nor vanish, but non-conservation time is set by $t_{BH}$. This picture nicely matches with the idea of a black hole as of critical system composed of many soft gravitons. The A-Goldstones of geometric picture represent the near-gapless Bogoliubov-Goldstone modes of critical soft-graviton system.

Gravitational Black Hole Hair from Event Horizon Supertranslations

We discuss BMS supertranslations both at null-infinity and on the horizon for the case of the Schwarzschild black hole. We show that both kinds of supertranslations lead to infinetly many gapless physical excitations. On this basis we construct a quotient algebra using suited superpositions of both kinds of transformations which cannot be compensated by an ordinary BMS-supertranslation and therefore are intrinsically due to the presence of an event horizon. We show that these quotient transformations are physical and generate gapless excitations on the horizon that can account for the gravitational hair as well as for the black hole entropy. We identify the physics of these modes as associated with Bogolioubov-Goldstone modes due to quantum criticality. Classically the number of these gapless modes is infinite. However, we show that due to quantum criticality the actual amount of information-carriers becomes finite and consistent with Bekenstein entropy. Although we only consider the case of Schwarzschild geometry, the arguments are extendable to arbitrary space-times containing event horizons.

Skyrmion Black Hole Hair: Conservation of Baryon Number by Black Holes and Observable Manifestations

We show that the existence of black holes with classical skyrmion hair invalidates standard proofs that global charges, such as the baryon number, cannot be conserved by a black hole. By carefully analyzing the standard arguments based on a Gedankenexperiment in which a black hole is seemingly-unable to return the baryon number that it swallowed, we identify inconsistencies in this reasoning, which does not take into the account neither the existence of skyrmion black holes nor the baryon/skyrmion correspondence. We then perform a refined Gedankenexperiment by incorporating the new knowledge and show that no contradiction with conservation of baryon number takes place at any stage of black hole evolution. Our analysis also indicates no conflict between semi-classical black holes and the existence of baryonic gauge interaction arbitrarily-weaker than gravity. Next, we study classical cross sections of a minimally-coupled massless probe scalar field scattered by a skyrmion black hole. We investigate how the skyrmion hair manifests itself by comparing this cross section with the analogous cross section caused by a Schwarzschild black hole which has the same ADM mass as the skyrmion black hole. Here we find an order-one difference in the positions of the characteristic peaks in the cross sections. The peaks are shifted to smaller scattering angles when the skyrmion hair is present. This comes from the fact that the skyrmion hair changes the near horizon geometry of the black hole when compared to a Schwarzschild black hole with same ADM mass. We keep the study of this second aspect general so that the qualitative results which we obtain can also be applied to black holes with classical hair of different kind.

Small neutrino masses from gravitational $θ$-term

We present how a neutrino condensate and small neutrino masses emerge from a topological formulation of gravitational anomaly. We first recapitulate how a gravitational $θ$-term leads to the emergence of a new bound neutrino state analogous to the $η'$ meson of QCD. Then we show the consequent formation of a neutrino vacuum condensate, which effectively generates small neutrino masses. Afterwards we outline several phenomenological consequences of our neutrino mass generation model. The cosmological neutrino mass bound vanishes since we predict the neutrinos to be massless until the phase transition in the late Universe, $T\sim {\rm meV}$. Deviations from an equal flavor rate due to enhanced neutrino decays in extraterrestrial neutrino fluxes can be observed in future IceCube data. The current cosmological neutrino background only consists of the lightest neutrinos, which, due to enhanced neutrino-neutrino interactions, either bind up, form a superfluid, or completely annihilate into massless bosons. Strongly coupled relic neutrinos could provide a contribution to cold dark matter in the late Universe, together with the new proposed particles and topological defects, which may have formed during neutrino condensation. These enhanced interactions could also be a source of relic neutrino clustering in our Galaxy, which possibly makes the overdense cosmic neutrino background detectable in the KATRIN experiment. The neutrino condensate provides a mass for the hypothetical $B-L$ gauge boson, leading to a gravity-competing force detectable in short-distance measurements. Gravitational waves detections have the potential to probe our neutrino mass generation mechanism.

Black Hole Type Quantum Computing in Critical Bose-Einstein Systems

Recent ideas about understanding physics of black hole information-processing in terms of quantum criticality allow us to implement black hole mechanisms of quantum computing within critical Bose-Einstein systems. The generic feature, uncovered both by analytic and numeric studies, is the emergence at the critical point of gapless weakly-interacting modes, which act as qubits for information-storage at a very low energy cost. These modes can be effectively described in terms of either Bogoliubov or Goldstone degrees of freedom. The ground-state at the critical point is maximally entangled and far from being classical. We confirm this near-critical behavior by a new analytic method. We compute growth of entanglement and show its consistency with black hole type behavior. On the other hand, in the over-critical regime the system develops a Lyapunov exponent and scrambles quantum information very fast. By, manipulating the system parameters externally, we can put it in and out of various regimes and in this way control the sequence of information storage and processing. By using gapless Bogoliubov modes as control qubits we design some simple logic gates.

Classical Limit of Black Hole Quantum N-Portrait and BMS Symmetry

Black hole entropy, denoted by N, in (semi)classical limit is infinite. This scaling reveals a very important information about the qubit degrees of freedom that carry black hole entropy. Namely, the multiplicity of qubits scales as N, whereas their energy gap and their coupling as 1/N. Such a behavior is indeed exhibited by Bogoliubov-Goldstone degrees of freedom of a quantum-critical state of N soft gravitons (a condensate or a coherent state) describing the black hole quantum portrait. They can be viewed as the Goldstone modes of a broken symmetry acting on the graviton condensate. In this picture Minkowski space naturally emerges as a coherent state of infinite-N gravitons of infinite wavelength and it carries an infinite entropy. In this paper we ask what is the geometric meaning (if any) of the classical limit of this symmetry. We argue that the infinite-N limit of Bogoliubov-Goldstone modes of critical graviton condensate is described by recently-discussed classical BMS super-translations broken by the black hole geometry. However, the full black hole information can only be recovered for finite N, since the recovery time becomes infinite in classical limit in which N is infinite.

Nambu-Goldstone Effective Theory of Information at Quantum Criticality

We establish a fundamental connection between quantum criticality of a many-body system, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, and its capacity of information-storage and processing. For deriving the effective theory of modes in the vicinity of the quantum critical point we develop a new method by mapping a Bose-Einstein condensate of $N$-particles onto a sigma model with a continuous global (pseudo)symmetry that mixes bosons of different momenta. The Bogolyubov modes of the condensate are mapped onto the Goldstone modes of the sigma model, which become gapless at the critical point. These gapless Goldstone modes are the quantum carriers of information and entropy. Analyzing their effective theory, we observe the information-processing properties strikingly similar to the ones predicted by the black hole portrait. The energy cost per qubit of information-storage vanishes in the large-$N$ limit and the total information-storage capacity increases with $N$ either exponentially or as a power law. The longevity of information-storage also increases with $N$, whereas the scrambling time in the over-critical regime is controlled by the Lyapunov exponent and scales logarithmically with $N$. This connection reveals that the origin of black hole information storage lies in the quantum criticality of the graviton Bose-gas, and that much simpler systems that can be manufactured in table-top experiments can exhibit very similar information-processing dynamics.

Stückelberg Formulation of Holography

We suggest that holography can be formulated in terms of the information capacity of the Stückelberg degrees of freedom that maintain gauge invariance of the theory in the presence of an information boundary. These Stückelbergs act as qubits that account for a certain fraction of quantum information. Their information capacity is measured by the ratio of the inverse Stückelberg energy gap to the size of the system. Systems with the smallest gap are maximally holographic. For massless gauge systems this information measure is universally equal to the inverse coupling evaluated at the systems' length scale. In this language it becomes very transparent why the Stückelberg information capacity of black holes saturates the Bekenstein bound and accounts for the entire information of the system. The physical reason is that the strength of quantum interaction is bounded from below by the gravitational coupling, which scales as area. Observing the striking similarity between the scalings of the energy gap of the boundary Stückelberg modes and the Bogoliubov modes of critical many-body systems, we establish a connection between holography and quantum criticality through the correspondence between these modes.

Towards a Quantum Theory of Solitons

We formulate a quantum coherent state picture for topological and non-topological solitons. We recognize that the topological charge arises from the infinite occupation number of zero momentum quanta flowing in one direction. Thus, the Noether charge of microscopic constituents gives rise to a topological charge in the macroscopic description. This fact explains the conservation of topological charge from the basic properties of coherent states. It also shows that no such conservation exists for non-topological solitons, which have finite mean occupation number. Consequently, they can have an exponentially-small but non-zero overlap with the vacuum, leading to vacuum instability. This amplitude can be interpreted as a coherent state description of false vacuum decay. Next we show that we can represent topological solitons as a convolution of two sectors that carry information about topology and energy separately, which makes their difference very transparent. Finally, we show how interaction among the solitons can be understood from basic properties of quantum coherent states.

BICEP2 in Corpuscular Description of Inflation

A corpuscular quantum description of inflation shows that there is no fundamental problem with trans-Planckian excursions of the inflaton field up to about 100 Planck masses, with the upper bound coming from the corpuscular quantum effects. In this description the r-parameter measures the ratio of occupation numbers of gravitons versus inflatons, which, according to BICEP2, was roughly a half at the time of 60 e-foldings prior to the end of inflation. We stress that in non-Wilsonian UV self-completion of gravity any trans-Planckian mode coupled to inflaton is a black hole. Unlike the Wilsonian case, their integration-out gives an exponentially-suppressed effect and is unable to prevent trans-Planckian excursions of the inflaton field.

Corpuscular Breaking of Supersymmetry

Are topological solitons elementary or composites? We answer this question by drawing up a corpuscular formalism in which solitons are coherent states of quantum constituents. This naturally leads to a functional integral representation, in which the classical saddle point is reached as the most probable distribution of corpuscles in the $\hbar = 0$ limit and where quantum corpuscular corrections correspond to excursions away from such a distribution that occur only for finite $\hbar$. Several striking features come up. Topological charge emerges as a collective flow of quantum numbers carried by individual corpuscles. Moreover, the corpuscular corrections are not reducible to any known form of quantum corrections, such as loop expansions in the coupling constant $\hbar g^2$ or semiclassical $e^{-1/\hbar g^2}$ effects. Corpuscular corrections are stronger and appear already at order $\sqrt{\hbar g^2}$. In SUSY theories quantum corpuscular corrections generically break supersymmetry. We show that a domain wall which perturbatively is a BPS state, violates all supersymmetries when the corpuscular effects are taken into account. The extension of the corpuscular structure to $D$-branes can lead to a built-in supersymmetry breaking mechanism in string theory, insensitive to technicalities such as moduli stabilization, with the SUSY breaking scale set by the string coupling times the $D$-brane tension.

Quantum Exclusion of Positive Cosmological Constant?

We show that a positive cosmological constant is incompatible with the quantum-corpuscular resolution of de Sitter metric in form of a coherent state. The reason is very general and is due to the quantum self-destruction of the coherent state because of the scattering of constituent graviton quanta. This process creates an irreversible quantum clock, which precludes eternal de Sitter. It also eliminates the possibility of Boltzmann brains and Poincare recurrences. This effect is expected to be part of any microscopic theory that takes into account the quantum corpuscular structure of the cosmological background. This observation puts the cosmological constant problem in a very different light, promoting it, from a naturalness problem, into a question of quantum consistency. We are learning that quantum gravity cannot tolerate exceedingly-classical sources.

Black Hole's Information Group

We suggest a group-theoretic approach to black holes, which is remotely analogous to the eightfold-way for mesons. As the black hole symmetry group we single out the group SO(2N+1) with N the black hole entropy. The Hilbert space is identified with the spinor irrep of SO(2N+1). Evaporation processes of m-quanta are associated to the breaking SO(2N+1) to SO(2(N-m)+1) X SO(2m). Under these assumptions we get a group-theoretic understanding of the evaporation process and of some typical time scales of black holes, such as Page's and scrambling times. We also discuss from the group theory point of view the mechanism of generation of entanglement both between the black hole and the radiated quanta as well as among the black hole constituents themselves.

Quantum Compositeness of Gravity: Black Holes, AdS and Inflation

Gravitational backgrounds, such as black holes, AdS, de Sitter and inflationary universes, should be viewed as composite of N soft constituent gravitons. It then follows that such systems are close to quantum criticality of graviton Bose-gas to Bose-liquid transition. Generic properties of the ordinary metric description, including geodesic motion or particle-creation in the background metric, emerge as the large-N limit of quantum scattering of constituent longitudinal gravitons. We show that this picture correctly accounts for physics of large and small black holes in AdS, as well as reproduces well-known inflationary predictions for cosmological parameters. However, it anticipates new effects not captured by the standard semi-classical treatment. In particular, we predict observable corrections that are sensitive to the inflationary history way beyond last 60 e-foldings. We derive an absolute upper bound on the number of e-foldings, beyond which neither de Sitter nor inflationary Universe can be approximated by a semi-classical metric. However, they could in principle persist in a new type of it quantum eternity state. We discuss implications of this phenomenon for the cosmological constant problem.

Scrambling in the Black Hole Portrait

Recently a quantum portrait of black holes was suggested according to which a macroscopic black hole is a Bose-Einstein condensate of soft gravitons stuck at the critical point of a quantum phase transition. We explain why quantum criticality and instability are the key for efficient generation of entanglement and consequently of the scrambling of information. By studying a simple Bose-Einstein prototype, we show that the scrambling time, which is set by the quantum break time of the system, goes as $\log N \,$ for $N$ the number of quantum constituents or equivalently the black hole entropy.

Black Hole Macro-Quantumness

It is a common wisdom that properties of macroscopic bodies are well described by (semi)classical physics. As we have suggested this wisdom is not applicable to black holes. Despite being macroscopic, black holes are quantum objects. They represent Bose-Einstein condensates of N-soft gravitons at the quantum critical point, where N Bogoliubov modes become gapless. As a result, physics governing arbitrarily-large black holes (e.g., of galactic size) is a quantum physics of the collective Bogoiliubov modes. This fact introduces a new intrinsically-quantum corrections in form of 1/N, as opposed to exp(-N). These corrections are unaccounted by the usual semiclassical expansion in h and cannot be recast in form of a quantum back-reaction to classical metric. Instead the metric itself becomes an approximate entity. These 1/N corrections abolish the presumed properties of black holes, such as non existence of hair, and are the key to nullifying the so-called information paradox.

Black Hole Quantum Mechanics in the Presence of Species

Recently within the context of a microscopic quantum theory, the Black Hole's Quantum N-Portrait, it was shown that continuous global symmetries are compatible with quantum black hole physics. In the present paper we revise within the same framework the semi-classical black hole bound on the number of particle species N_{species}. We show that unlike the bound on global charge, the bound on species survives in the quantum picture and gives rise to a new fundamental length-scale, L_{species} = sqrt{N_{species}} L_P$, beyond which the resolution of species identities is impossible. This finding nullifies the so-called species problem. This scale sets the size of the lightest quantum black hole in the theory, Planckion. A crucial difference between the gravitational and non-gravitational species emerges. For gravitational species, the lightest black holes are exactly at the scale of perturbative unitarity violation, which is a strong indication for self-UV-completion of gravity. However, non-gravitational species create a gap between the perturbative unitarity scale and the lightest black holes, which must be filled by some unitarity-restoring physics. Thus, self-UV-completion of gravity implies that the number of non-gravitational species must not exceed the gravitational ones.

Black Hole's 1/N Hair

According to the standard view classically black holes carry no hair, whereas quantum hair is at best exponentially weak. We show that suppression of hair is an artifact of the semi-classical treatment and that in the quantum picture hair appears as an inverse mass-square effect. Such hair is predicted in the microscopic quantum description in which a black hole represents a self-sustained leaky Bose-condensate of N soft gravitons. In this picture the Hawking radiation is the quantum depletion of the condensate. Within this picture we show that quantum black hole physics is fully compatible with continuous global symmetries and that global hair appears with the strength B/N, where B is the global charge swallowed by the black hole. For large charge this hair has dramatic effect on black hole dynamics. Our findings can have interesting astrophysical consequences, such as existence of black holes with large detectable baryonic and leptonic numbers.

Black Holes as Critical Point of Quantum Phase Transition

We reformulate the quantum black hole portrait in the language of modern condensed matter physics. We show that black holes can be understood as a graviton Bose-Einstein condensate at the critical point of a quantum phase transition, identical to what has been observed in systems of cold atoms. The Bogoliubov modes that become degenerate and nearly gapless at this point are the holographic quantum degrees of freedom responsible for the black hole entropy and the information storage. They have no (semi)classical counterparts and become inaccessible in this limit. These findings indicate a deep connection between the seemingly remote systems and suggest a new quantum foundation of holography. They also open an intriguing possibility of simulating black hole information processing in table-top labs.

Landau-Ginzburg Limit of Black Hole's Quantum Portrait: Self Similarity and Critical Exponent

Recently we have suggested that the microscopic quantum description of a black hole is an overpacked self-sustained Bose-condensate of N weakly-interacting soft gravitons, which obeys the rules of 't Hooft's large-N physics. In this note we derive an effective Landau-Ginzburg Lagrangian for the condensate and show that it becomes an exact description in a semi-classical limit that serves as the black hole analog of 't Hooft's planar limit. The role of a weakly-coupled Landau-Ginzburg order parameter is played by N. This description consistently reproduces the known properties of black holes in semi-classical limit. Hawking radiation, as the quantum depletion of the condensate, is described by the slow-roll of the field N. In the semiclassical limit, where black holes of arbitrarily small size are allowed, the equation of depletion is self similar leading to a scaling law for the black hole size with critical exponent 1/3.

Price for Environmental Neutrino-Superluminality

We ask whether the recent OPERA results on neutrino superluminality could be an environmental effect characteristic of the local neighborhood of our planet, without the need of violation of the Poincaré-invariance at a fundamental level. This explanation requires the existence of a new spin-2 field of a planetary Compton wave-length that is coupled to neutrinos and the rest of the matter asymmetrically, both in the magnitude and in the sign. Sourced by the earth this field creates an effective metric on which neutrinos propagate superluminally, whereas other species are much less sensitive to the background. Such a setup, at an effective field theory level, passes all immediate phenomenological tests and its natural prediction is an inevitable appearance of a testable long-range gravity-type fifth force. We then prove that under the assumption of the weakly-coupled Poincaré-invariant physics, the asymmetrically-coupled second massive graviton is the only possible environmental explanation. Despite phenomenological viability, the sign asymmetry of the coupling we identify as the main potential obstacle for a consistent UV-completion. We also discuss the possible identification of this field with a Kaluza-Klein state of an extra dimension in which neutrino can propagate.

Road Signs for UV-Completion

We confront the concepts of Wilsonian UV-completion versus self-completion by Classicalization in theories with derivatively-coupled scalars. We observe that the information about the UV-completion road is encoded in the sign of the derivative terms. We note that the sign of the derivative couplings for which there is no consistent Wilsonian UV-completion is the one that allows for consistent classicalons. This is an indication that for such a sign the vertex must be treated as fundamental and the theory self-protects against potential inconsistencies, such as superluminality, via self-completion by classicalization. Applying this reasoning to the UV-completion of the Standard Model, we see that the information about the Higgs versus classicalization is encoded in the sign of the scattering amplitude of longitudinal W-bosons. Negative sign excludes Higgs or any other weakly-coupled Wilsonian physics.

Ultra-High Energy Probes of Classicalization

Classicalizing theories are characterized by a rapid growth of the scattering cross section. This growth converts these sort of theories in interesting probes for ultra-high energy experiments even at relatively low luminosity, such as cosmic rays or Plasma Wakefield accelerators. The microscopic reason behind this growth is the production of N-particle states, classicalons, that represent self-sustained lumps of soft Bosons. For spin-2 theories this is the quantum portrait of what in the classical limit are known as black holes. We emphasize the importance of this quantum picture which liberates us from the artifacts of the classical geometric limit and allows to scan a much wider landscape of experimentally-interesting quantum theories. We identify a phenomenologically-viable class of spin-2 theories for which the growth of classicalon production cross section can be as efficient as to compete with QCD cross section already at 100 TeV energy, signaling production of quantum black holes with graviton occupation number of order 10^4.

Black Hole Masses are Quantized

We give a simple argument showing that in any sensible quantum field theory the masses of black holes cannot assume continuous values and must be quantized. Our proof solely relies on Poincare-invariance of the asymptotic background, and is insensitive to geometric characteristics of black holes or other peculiarities of the short distance physics. Therefore, our results are equally-applicable to any other localized objects on asymptotically Poincare-invariant space, such as classicalons. By adding a requirement that in large mass limit the quantization must approximately account for classical results, we derive an universal quantization rule applicable to all classicalons (including black holes) in arbitrary number of dimensions. In particular, this implies, that black holes cannot emit/absorb arbitrarily soft quanta. The effect has phenomenological model-independent implications for black holes and other classicalons that may be created at LHC. We predict, that contrary to naive intuition, the black holes and/or classicalons, will be produced in form of fully-fledged quantum resonances of discrete masses, with the level-spacing controlled by the inverse square-root of cross-section.

Black Hole's Quantum N-Portrait

We establish a quantum measure of classicality in the form of the occupation number, $N$, of gravitons in a gravitational field. This allows us to view classical background geometries as quantum Bose-condensates with large occupation numbers of soft gravitons. We show that among all possible sources of a given physical length, $N$ is maximized by the black hole and coincides with its entropy. The emerging quantum mechanical picture of a black hole is surprisingly simple and fully parameterized by $N$. The black hole is a leaky bound-state in form of a cold Bose-condensate of $N$ weakly-interacting soft gravitons of wave-length $ \sqrt{N}$ times the Planck length and of quantum interaction strength 1/N. Such a bound-state exists for an arbitrary $N$. This picture provides a simple quantum description of the phenomena of Hawking radiation, Bekenstein entropy as well as of non-Wilsonian UV-self-completion of Einstein gravity. We show that Hawking radiation is nothing but a quantum depletion of the graviton Bose-condensate, which despite the zero temperature of the condensate produces a thermal spectrum of temperature $T \, = \, 1/\sqrt{N}$. The Bekenstein entropy originates from the exponentially growing with $N$ number of quantum states. Finally, our quantum picture allows to understand classicalization of deep-UV gravitational scattering as $2 \rightarrow N$ transition. We point out some fundamental similarities between the black holes and solitons, such as a t'Hooft-Polyakov monopole. Both objects represent Bose-condensates of $N$ soft bosons of wavelength $\sqrt{N}$ and interaction strength 1/N. In short, the semi-classical black hole physics is 1/N-coupled large-$N$ quantum physics.

Classical Dimensional Transmutation and Confinement

We observe that probing certain classical field theories by external sources uncovers the underlying renormalization group structure, including the phenomenon of dimensional transmutation, at purely-classical level. We perform this study on an example of $λϕ^{4}$ theory and unravel asymptotic freedom and triviality for negative and positives signs of $λ$ respectively. We derive exact classical $β$ function equation. Solving this equation we find that an isolated source has an infinite energy and therefore cannot exist as an asymptotic state. On the other hand a dipole, built out of two opposite charges, has finite positive energy. At large separation the interaction potential between these two charges grows indefinitely as a distance in power one third.

Classicalization of Gravitons and Goldstones

We establish a close parallel between classicalization of gravitons and derivatively-coupled Nambu-Goldstone-type scalars. We show, that black hole formation in high energy scattering process represents classicalization with the classicalization radius given by Schwarzschild radius of center of mass energy, and with the precursor of black hole entropy being given by number of soft quanta composing this classical configuration. Such an entropy-equivalent is defined for scalar classicalons also and is responsible for exponential suppression of their decay into small number of final particles. This parallel works in both ways. For optimists that are willing to hypothesize that gravity may indeed self-unitarize at high energies via black hole formation, it illustrates that the Goldstones may not be much different in this respect, and they classicalize essentially by similar dynamics as gravitons. In the other direction, it may serve as an useful de-mystifier of via-black-hole-unitarization process and of the role of entropy in it, as it illustrates, that much more prosaic scalar theories essentially do the same. Finally, it illustrates that in both cases classicalization is the defining property for unitarization, and that it sets-in before one can talk about accompanying properties, such as entropy and thermality of static classicalons (black holes). These properties are by-products of classicalization, and their equivalents can be defined for non-gravitational cases of classicalization.

Classicalize or not to Classicalize?

We show that theories that exhibit classicalization phenomenon cease to do so as soon as they are endowed a Wilsonian weakly-coupled UV-completion that restores perturbative unitarity, despite the fact that such UV-completion does not change the leading structure of the effective low-energy theory. For example, a Chiral Lagrangian of Nambu-Goldstone bosons (pions), with or without the Higgs (QCD) UV-completion looks the same in zero momentum limit, but the latter classicalizes in high energy scattering, whereas the former does not. Thus, theory must make a definite choice, either accept a weakly-coupled UV-completion or be classicalized. The UV-awareness that determines the choice is encoded in sub-leading structure of effective low-energy action. This peculiarity has to do with the fundamental fact that in classicalizing theories high energies correspond to large distances, due to existence of the extended classical configurations sourced by energy. UV-fate of the theory can be parameterized by introducing a concept of a new quantum length-scale, de-classicalization radius. Classicalization is abolished when this radius is a dominant length. We then observe a possibility of a qualitatively new regime, in which a theory classicalizes only within a finite window of energies. We suggest that one possible interpretation of physics above the classicality window is in terms of a quantum theory of unstable extended objects, analogous, for example, to unstable QCD-type flux tubes. In this picture ordinary QCD can be viewed as a would-be classicalizing theory with collapsed classicality window.

Physics of Trans-Planckian Gravity

We study the field theoretical description of a generic theory of gravity flowing to Einstein General Relativity in IR. We prove that, if ghost-free, in the weakly coupled regime such a theory can never become weaker than General Relativity. Using this fact, as a byproduct, we suggest that in a ghost-free theory of gravity trans-Planckian propagating quantum degrees of freedom cannot exist. The only physical meaning of a trans-Planckian pole is the one of a classical state (Black Hole) which is described by the light IR quantum degrees of freedom and gives exponentially-suppressed contributions to virtual processes. In this picture Einstein gravity is UV self-complete, although not Wilsonian, and sub-Planckian distances are unobservable in any healthy theory of gravity. We then finally show that this UV/IR correspondence puts a severe constraint on any attempt of conventional Wilsonian UV-completion of trans-Planckian gravity. Specifically, there is no well-defined energy domain in which gravity could become asymptotically weak or safe.

Problems with False Vacua in Supersymmetric Theories

It has been suggested recently that in a consistent theory any Minkowski vacuum must be exactly stable. As a result, a large class of theories that in ordinary treatment would appear sufficiently long-lived, in reality make no sense. In particular, this applies to supersymmetric models in which global supersymmetry is broken in a false vacuum. We show that in any such theory the dynamics of supersymmetry breaking cannot be decoupled from the Planck scale physics. This finding poses an obvious challenge for the idea of low-scale metastable (for example gauge) mediation.

UV-Completion by Classicalization

We suggest a novel approach to UV-completion of a class of non-renormalizable theories, according to which the high-energy scattering amplitudes get unitarized by production of extended classical objects (classicalons), playing a role analogous to black holes, in the case of non-gravitational theories. The key property of classicalization is the existence of a classicalizer field that couples to energy-momentum sources. Such localized sources are excited in high-energy scattering processes and lead to the formation of classicalons. Two kinds of natural classicalizers are Nambu-Goldstone bosons (or, equivalently, longitudinal polarizations of massive gauge fields) and scalars coupled to energy-momentum type sources. Classicalization has interesting phenomenological applications for the UV-completion of the Standard Model both with or without the Higgs. In the Higgless Standard Model the high-energy scattering amplitudes of longitudinal $W$-bosons self-unitarize via classicalization, without the help of any new weakly-coupled physics. Alternatively, in the presence of a Higgs boson, classicalization could explain the stabilization of the hierarchy. In both scenarios the high-energy scatterings are dominated by the formation of classicalons, which subsequently decay into many particle states. The experimental signatures at the LHC are quite distinctive, with sharp differences in the two cases.

Dynamics of Unitarization by Classicalization

We study dynamics of the classicalization phenomenon suggested in arXiv:1010.1415, according to which a class of non-renormalizable theories self-unitarizes at high-energies via creation of classical configurations (classicalons). We study this phenomenon in an explicit model of derivatively-self-coupled scalar that serves as a prototype for a Nambu-Goldstone-Stückelberg field. We prepare the initial state in form of a collapsing wave-packet of a small occupation number but of very high energy, and observe that the classical configuration indeed develops. Our results confirm the previous estimates, showing that because of self-sourcing the wave-packet forms a classicalon configuration with radius that increases with center of mass energy. Thanks to self-sourcing by energy, unlike solitons, the production of classicalons dominates the high-energy scattering. In order to confront classicalizing and non-classicalizing theories, we use a language in which the scattering cross section can be universally understood as a geometric cross section set by a classical radius down to which waves can propagate freely. The difference is, that in non-classicalizing examples this radius shrinks with increasing energy, whereas in classicalizing theories expands and becomes macroscopic. We study analogous scattering in a Galileon system and discover that classicalization is less efficient there. We thus observe, that classicalization is source-sensitive and that Goldstones pass the first test.

Probing Quantum Geometry at LHC

We present an evidence, that the volumes of compactified spaces as well as the areas of black hole horizons must be quantized in Planck units. This quantization has phenomenological consequences, most dramatic being for micro black holes in the theories with TeV scale gravity that can be produced at LHC. We predict that black holes come in form of a discrete tower with well defined spacing. Instead of thermal evaporation, they decay through the sequence of spontaneous particle emissions, with each transition reducing the horizon area by strictly integer number of Planck units. Quantization of the horizons can be a crucial missing link by which the notion of the minimal length in gravity eliminates physical singularities. In case when the remnants of the black holes with the minimal possible area and mass of order few TeV are stable, they might be good candidates for the cold dark matter in the Universe.

Self-Completeness of Einstein Gravity

We argue, that in Einsteinian gravity the Planck length is the shortest length of nature, and any attempt of resolving trans-Planckian physics bounces back to macroscopic distances due to black hole formation. In Einstein gravity trans-Planckian propagating quantum degrees of freedom cannot exist, instead they are equivalent to the classical black holes that are fully described by lighter infra-red degrees of freedom and give exponentially-soft contribution into the virtual processes. Based on this property we argue that pure-Einstein (super)gravity and its high-dimensional generalizations are self-complete in deep-UV, but not in standard Wilsonian sense. We suggest that certain strong-coupling limit of string theory is built-in in pure Einstein gravity, whereas the role of weakly-coupled string theory limit is to consistently couple gravity to other particle species, with their number being set by the inverse string coupling. We also discuss some speculative ideas generalizing the notion of non-Wilsonian self-completeness to other theories, such as the standard model without the Higgs.

Species and Strings

Based on well-known properties of semi-classical black holes, we show that weakly-coupled string theory can be viewed as a theory of N = 1/g_s^2 particle species. This statement is a string theoretic realization of the fact that the fundamental scale in any consistent D-dimensional theory of gravity is not the Planck length l_D, but rather the species scale L_N = N^1/(D-2) l_D. Using this fact, we derive the bound on semi-classical black hole entropy in any consistent theory of gravity as S > N, which when applied to string theory provides additional evidence for the former relation. This counting also shows that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy can be viewed as the entanglement entropy, without encountering any puzzle of species. We demonstrate that the counting of species extends to the M-theory limit. The role of the species scale is now played by the eleven-dimensional Planck length, beyond which resolution of distances is gravitationally-impossible. The conclusion is, that string theory is a theory of species and gets replaced by a pure gravitational theory in the limit when species become strongly coupled and decouple.

Evaporation of Microscopic Black Holes in String Theory and the Bound on Species

We address the question how string compactifications with D-branes are consistent with the black hole bound, which arises in any theory with number of particle species to which the black holes can evaporate. For the Kaluza-Klein particles, both longitudinal and transversal to the D-branes, it is relatively easy to see that the black hole bound is saturated, and the geometric relations can be understood in the language of species-counting. We next address the question of the black hole evaporation into the higher string states and discover, that contrary to the naive intuition, the exponentially growing number of Regge states does not preclude the existence of semi-classical black holes of sub-stringy size. Our analysis indicates that the effective number of string resonances to which such micro black holes evaporate is not exponentially large but is bounded by N = 1/g_s^2, which suggests the interpretation of the well-known relation between the Planck and string scales as the saturation of the black hole bound on the species number. In addition, we also discuss some other issues in D-brane compactifications with a low string scale of order TeV, such as the masses of light moduli fields.

Origin and Phenomenology of Weak-Doublet Spin-1 Bosons

We study phenomenological consequences of the Standard Model extension by the new spin-1 fields with the internal quantum numbers of the electroweak Higgs doublets. We show, that there are at least three different classes of theories, all motivated by the hierarchy problem, which predict appearance of such vector weak-doublets not far from the weak scale. The common feature for all the models is the existence of an SU(3) gauge extension of the weak SU(2) group, which is broken down to the latter at some energy scale around TeV. The Higgs doublet then emerges as either a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of a global remnant of SU(3), or as a symmetry partner of the true eaten-up Goldstone boson. In the third class, the Higgs is a scalar component of a high-dimensional SU(3) gauge field. The common phenomenological feature of these theories is the existence of the electroweak doublet vectors (Z*,W*), which in contrast to well-known Z' and W' bosons posses only anomalous (magnetic moment type) couplings with ordinary light fermions. This fact leads to some unique signatures for their detection at the hadron colliders.

Nature of Microscopic Black Holes and Gravity in Theories with Particle Species

Relying solely on unitarity and the consistency with large-distance black hole physics, we derive model-independent properties of the microscopic black holes and of short-distance gravity in theories with N particle species. In this class of theories black holes can be as light as M_{Planck}/\sqrt{N} and be produced in particle collisions above this energy. We show, that the micro black holes must come in the same variety as the species do, although their label is not associated with any conserved charge measurable at large distances. In contrast with big Schwarzschildian ones, the evaporation of the smallest black holes is maximally undemocratic and is biased in favor of particular species. With an increasing mass the democracy characteristic to the usual macro black holes is gradually regained. The lowest possible mass above which black holes become Einsteinian is \sqrt{N} M_{Planck}. This fact uncovers the new fundamental scale (below the quantum gravity scale) above which gravity changes classically, and the properties of black holes and gravity are such as if some extra dimensions open up, although no such input exists in the theory. Our observations indicate that geometry of space may be an emergent concept following from large number of species and the consistency with macro black hole physics. We apply our findings to the phenomenological properties of the micro black holes that can be observed at LHC for large N. Extrapolating our findings to small N, one may ask whether the existence of quark and lepton flavors is already an evidence for emergent extra dimensions at short distances.

Power of Black Hole Physics: Seeing through the Vacuum Landscape

In this paper we generalize the black hole bound of arXiv:0706.2050 to de Sitter spaces, and apply it to various vacua in the landscape, with a special emphasis on slow-roll inflationary vacua. Non-trivial constraints on the lifetime and the Hubble expansion rate emerge. For example, the general tendency is, that for the fixed number and the increasing mass of the species, vacua must become more curved and more unstable, either classically or quantum mechanically. We also discuss the constraints on the lifetime of vacua in the landscape, due to decay into the neighboring states.

Quantum Information and Gravity Cutoff in Theories with Species

We show that lowering of the gravitational cutoff relative to the Planck mass, imposed by black hole physics in theories with N species, has an independent justification from quantum information theory. First, this scale marks the limiting capacity of any information processor. Secondly, by taking into the account the limitations of the quantum information storage in any system with species, the bound on the gravity cutoff becomes equivalent to the holographic bound, and this equivalence automatically implies the equality of entanglement and Bekenstein-Hawking entropies. Next, the same bound follows from quantum cloning theorem. Finally, we point out that by identifying the UV and IR threshold scales of the black hole quasi-classicality in four-dimensional field and high-dimensional gravity theories, the bound translates as the correspondence between the two theories. In case when the high-dimensional background is AdS, this reproduces the well-known AdS/CFT relation, but also suggests a generalization of the correspondence beyond AdS spaces. In particular, it reproduces a recently suggested duality between a four-dimensional CFT and a flat five dimensional theory, in which gravity crosses over from four to five dimensional regime in far infrared.

Black Holes and Large N Species Solution to the Hierarchy Problem

We provide the perturbative and non-perturbative arguments showing that theories with large number of species of the quantum fields, imply an inevitable hierarchy between the masses of the species and the Planck scale, shedding a different light on the hierarchy problem. In particular, using the black hole physics, we prove that any consistent theory that includes N number of the Z_2-conserved species of the quantum fields of mass Λ, puts a lower bound on the Planck mass, which in large N limit is given by NΛ^2. An useful byproduct of this proof is that any exactly conserved quantum charge, not associated with a long-range classical field, must be defined maximum modulo N, bounded by the the ratio of the Planck to the unit charge masses squared. For example, a continuous global U(1) `baryon number' symmetry, must be explicitly broken by gravity, at least down to a Z_N subgroup, with N bounded by the ratio of the Planck to baryon masses squared. The same constraint applies to any discrete gauge symmetry, as well as to other quantum-mechanically detectable black hole charges that are associated with the massive quantum hair of the black hole. We show that the gravitationally-coupled N-species sector that solves the gauge hirearchy problem, should be probed by LHC.

D-term strings

We study the embedding of cosmic strings, related to the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution, into d=4, N=1 supergravity. We find that the local cosmic string solution which saturates the BPS bound of supergravity with $D$-term potential for the Higgs field and with constant Fayet--Iliopoulos term, has 1/2 of supersymmetry unbroken. We observe an interesting relation between the gravitino supersymmetry transformation, positive energy condition and the deficit angle of the cosmic string. We argue that the string solutions with magnetic flux with F-term potential cannot be supersymmetric, which leads us to a conjecture that D1-strings (wrapped D(1+q)-branes) of string theory in the effective 4d supergravity are described by the D-term strings that we study in this paper. We give various consistency checks of this conjecture, and show that it highlights some generic properties of non-BPS string theory backgrounds, such as brane-anti-brane systems. Supersymmetry breaking by such systems can be viewed as FI D-term breaking, which implies, under certain conditions, the presence of gauged R-symmetry on such backgrounds. The D-term nature of the brane-anti-brane energy can also provide information on the superpotential for the tachyon, which Higgses the R-symmetry. In this picture, the inter-brane force can be viewed as a result of the world-volume gauge coupling renormalization by the open string loops.

Large Hierarchies from Attractor Vacua

We discuss a mechanism through which the multi-vacua theories, such as String Theory, could solve the Hierarchy Problem, without any UV-regulating physics at low energies. Because of symmetry the number density of vacua with a certain hierarchically-small Higgs mass diverges, and is an attractor on the vacuum landscape. The hierarchy problem is solved in two steps. It is first promoted into a problem of the super-selection rule among the infinite number of vacua (analogous to theta-vacua in QCD), that are finely scanned by the Higgs mass. This rule is lifted by heavy branes, which effectively convert the Higgs mass into a dynamical variable. The key point is that a discrete "brane-charge-conjugation" symmetry guarantees that the fineness of the vacuum-scanning is set by the Higgs mass itself. On a resulting landscape in all, but a measure-zero set of vacua the Higgs mass has a common hierarchically-small value. In minimal models this value is controlled by the QCD scale and is of the right magnitude. Although in each particular vacuum there is no visible UV-regulating low energy physics, the realistic models are predictive. For example, we show that in the minimal case the "charge conjugation" symmetry is automatically a family symmetry, and imposes severe restrictions on quark Yukawa matrices.

Cosmological Perturbations From Inhomogeneous Reheating, Freeze-Out, and Mass Domination

We generalize a recently proposed mechanism for the origin of primordial metric perturbations in inflationary models. Quantum fluctuations of light scalar fields during inflation give rise to super-horizon fluctuations of masses and reaction rates of various particles. Reheating, freeze-out, and matter-domination processes become inhomogeneous and generate super-horizon metric perturbations. We also calculate the degree of non-Gaussianity $f_{nl}$ for this new model of cosmological perturbations. The precise value of $f_{nl}$ depends on the specific models, but $|f_{nl}|\sim$few is a natural lower bound for our mechanisms. This is much larger than the currently assumed theoretical value $f_{nl}\sim tilt \lesssim 0.05$, and is thought to be observable. In a particularly attractive model of inhomogeneous mass-domination, the non-Gaussianity of perturbations generated by our mechanism is simply $f_{nl}=5$, irrespective of the detailed structure of the underlying field theory.

Scales of Gravity

We propose a framework in which the quantum gravity scale can be as low as $10^{-3}$ eV. The key assumption is that the Standard Model ultraviolet cutoff is much higher than the quantum gravity scale. This ensures that we observe conventional weak gravity. We construct an explicit brane-world model in which the brane-localized Standard Model is coupled to strong 5D gravity of infinite-volume flat extra space. Due to the high ultraviolet scale, the Standard Model fields generate a large graviton kinetic term on the brane. This kinetic term ``shields'' the Standard Model from the strong bulk gravity. As a result, an observer on the brane sees weak 4D gravity up to astronomically large distances beyond which gravity becomes five-dimensional. Modeling quantum gravity above its scale by the closed string spectrum we show that the shielding phenomenon protects the Standard Model from an apparent phenomenological catastrophe due to the exponentially large number of light string states. The collider experiments, astrophysics, cosmology and gravity measurements {\it independently} point to the same lower bound on the quantum gravity scale, $10^{-3}$ eV. For this value the model has experimental signatures both for colliders and for sub-millimeter gravity measurements. Black holes reveal certain interesting properties in this framework.

Constraints on Extra Time Dimensions

We discuss phenomenology of extra time dimensions in a scenario where the standard model particles are localized in ``our'' time, whereas gravity can propagate in all time dimensions. For an odd number of extra times, at small distances, the (real part of the) Newtonian potential is ``screened'' by tachyonic Kaluza-Klein gravitons. In general, the gravitational self-energy of objects acquires an imaginary part. This complexity may either be interpreted as an amplitude for the disappearance into ``nothing'', leading to the causality and probability violation in low-energy processes, or as an artifact of the fictitious decay into the unphysical negative energy tachyons. The former case would put the most severe phenomenological restrictions on such theories. In the latter case the size of extra times may be within the reach of the proposed gravitational experiments. In such a case these experiments should observe that the strength of the Newtonian gravity diminishes at short distances.

Infinitely Large New Dimensions

We construct intersecting brane configurations in Anti-de-Sitter space localizing gravity to the intersection region, with any number $n$ of extra dimensions. This allows us to construct two kinds of theories with infinitely large new dimensions, TeV scale quantum gravity and sub-millimeter deviations from Newton's Law. The effective 4D Planck scale $M_{Pl}$ is determined in terms of the fundamental Planck scale $M_*$ and the $AdS$ radius of curvature $L$ via the familiar relation $M_{Pl}^2 \sim M_{*}^{2+n} L^n$; $L$ acts as an effective radius of compactification for gravity on the intersection. Taking $M_* \sim $ TeV and $L \sim $ sub-mm reproduces the phenomenology of theories with large extra dimensions. Alternately, taking $M_* \sim L^{-1} \sim M_{Pl}$, and placing our 3-brane a distance $\sim 100 M_{Pl}^{-1}$ away from the intersection gives us a theory with an exponential determination of the Weak/Planck hierarchy.

Non-conservation of Global Charges in the Brane Universe and Baryogenesis

We argue that global charges, such as baryon or lepton number, are not conserved in theories with the Standard Model fields localized on the brane which propagates in higher-dimensional space-time. The global-charge non-conservation is due to quantum fluctuations of the brane surface. These fluctuations create "baby branes" that can capture some global charges and carry them away into the bulk of higher-dimensional space. Such processes are exponentially suppressed at low-energies, but can be significant at high enough temperatures or energies. These effects can lead to a new, intrinsically high-dimensional mechanism of baryogenesis. Baryon asymmetry might be produced due either to "evaporation" into the baby branes, or creation of the baryon number excess in collisions of two Brane Universes. As an example we discuss a possible cosmological scenario within the recently proposed "Brane Inflation" framework. Inflation is driven by displaced branes which slowly fall on top of each other. When the branes collide inflation stops and the Brane Universe reheats. During this non-equilibrium collision baryon number can be transported from one brane to another one. This results in the baryon number excess in our Universe which exactly equals to the hidden "baryon number" deficit in the other Brane Universe.

Dynamical Flavor Hierarchy and Heavy Top

In the Standard Model one of the generations is much heavier than the other two. We propose a simple mechanism where all three generations are treated on the equal footing to begin with, and one heavy and two light families emerge from supersymmetric strong dynamics. Naturally Light Sterile Neutrinos in Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking

Moduli are generic in string (M) theory. In a large class of gauge-mediated Supersymmetry breaking models, the fermionic components of such fields have very light masses, around the eV scale, and non-negligible mixing with active neutrinos, of order $10^{-4}$. Consequently, these fermions could play the role of sterile neutrinos to which active neutrinos oscillate, thus affecting measurements of solar neutrinos or of atmospheric neutrinos. They could also provide warm dark matter, thus affecting structure formation.

Naturally Light Higgs Doublet in the Spinor Representation of SUSY SO(10)

Within the supersymmetric SO(10) GUT we explore the possibility of the light Higgs doublet being a member of the 16-dimensional spinorial representation. This fact is ultimately related with the assumption that the light matter (at least partially) resides in some of the tensor representations as well. Several interesting features emerge. First, provided that the same 16-plet is responsible for the breaking $SO(10) \rightarrow SU(5)$, the heaviness of the top can automatically follow from the field content at $M_{GUT}$, without need of any flavour symmetries. Secondly, the doublet--triplet splitting problem receives a new natural solution. In addition, a dimension=5 (Higgsino mediated) proton decay can be naturally suppressed. We construct explicit SO(10) models with the above properties, with most general superpotentials under the symmetries.

INFLATION INDUCED SUSY BREAKING AND FLAT VACUUM DIRECTIONS

We discuss how the inflation induced supersymmetry breaking affects the flat directions of SUSY vacua. We show that under general assumptions all gauge nonsinglet fields, parameterizing flat directions (and in particular squarks and sleptons), get large $radiative$ masses which are related to the value of the Hubble constant ($H$) and to the expectation value of the inflaton field. This mass (typically $\sim H$) is of ``non-gravitational'' origin and does not vanishes in the global SUSY limit. Large radiative corrections are induced by $F$-term (or $D$-term) density, which dominates the inflationary universe and strongly breaks supersymmetry. In such theories it is difficult to treat squarks and sleptons as the light fields in the inflationary period. In the generic supergravity theories all flat directions, including moduli, are getting curvature of order the Hubble constant. However, for the gauge-nonsinglet flat directions radiative contribution to the curvature (induced by renormalizable gauge interactions) may be dominant.

INFLATION VERSUS THE COSMOLOGICAL MODULI PROBLEM

We show that in generic supergravity theories the mass of the moduli during inflation is larger (or at least of the same order of magnitude) than the Hubble constant. This fact does not depends on the details of the inflation and on the value of the Hubble parameter during it. The reason is that inflationary universe is dominated by large F-term (or D-term) density which is higher than the SUSY breaking scale in the present minimum and stabilizes the flat directions of the supersymmetric vacua. Therefore, in general even standard inflationary scenarios (with large H) may solve the cosmological moduli problem.

Light Colour-Triplet Higgs is Compatible with Proton Stability: An alternative approach to the doublet-triplet splitting problem

It is usually assumed that the proton stability requires the coloured triplet partner of the electroweak Higgs doublet to be superheavy (with a mass $\sim M_{GUT}$). We show that this is a very model-dependent statement and the colour triplet can be as light as the weak doublet without leading to the proton decay problem: instead of using the mass difference the splitting can occur between the doublet and triplet Yukawa coupling constants. In this scenario the GUT symmetry breaking automatically induces an extremely strong suppression $\sim M_W/M_{GUT}$ of the coloured Higgs effective Yukawa coupling; this happens without any fine--tuning, just because of the Clebsch factors. Conceptual differences of the above picture are: (1) an essentially stable proton: both $d = 5$ and $d = 6$ proton decay mediating operators are suppressed by the same factors $\sim (M_w/M_{GUT})^2$; (2) the possibility of solving the $μ$ problem by the light gauge singlet field (this fact would lead to the destabilization of the hierarchy in the standard case); (3) the existence of the long--lived, light, coloured and charged supermultiplet in the 100 GeV mass region. We construct two explicit SO(10) examples with the above properties, with superpotentials most general under the symmetries.
