A functional limit theorem for additive functionals

We study a general limiting framework for the convergence of sequences of additive functionals of diffusions to Lévy subordinators, and provide explicit sufficient conditions that both ensure convergence and characterize the law of the limit. As an application, we identify a novel limiting regime for Wright-Fisher and Feller diffusions in the reflecting case and describe the corresponding limiting subordinator. This work is motivated by, and has applications in, neuroscience, where reflected diffusions are used to parametrize synchrony in doubly-stochastic models of spiking activity.

Existence, Characterization and Approximation in the Generalized Monotone-Follower Problem

We revisit the classical monotone-follower problem and consider it in a generalized formulation. Our approach is based on a compactness substitute for nondecreasing processes, the Meyer-Zheng weak convergence, and the maximum principle of Pontryagin. It establishes existence under weak conditions, produces general approximation results and further elucidates the celebrated connection between singular stochastic control and stopping.

Dynamic Programming for controlled Markov families: abstractly and over Martingale Measures

We describe an abstract control-theoretic framework in which the validity of the dynamic programming principle can be established in continuous time by a verification of a small number of structural properties. As an application we treat several cases of interest, most notably the lower-hedging and utility-maximization problems of financial mathematics both of which are naturally posed over ``sets of martingale measures''.

Facelifting in Utility Maximization

We establish the existence and characterization of a primal and a dual facelift - discontinuity of the value function at the terminal time - for utility-maximization in incomplete semimartingale-driven financial markets. Unlike in the lower- and upper-hedging problems, and somewhat unexpectedly, a facelift turns out to exist in utility-maximization despite strict convexity in the objective function. In addition to discussing our results in their natural, Markovian environment, we also use them to show that the dual optimizer cannot be found in the set of countably-additive (martingale) measures in a wide variety of situations.

Shadow prices and well-posedness in the problem of optimal investment and consumption with transaction costs

We revisit the optimal investment and consumption model of Davis and Norman (1990) and Shreve and Soner (1994), following a shadow-price approach similar to that of Kallsen and Muhle-Karbe (2010). Making use of the completeness of the model without transaction costs, we reformulate and reduce the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation for this singular stochastic control problem to a non-standard free-boundary problem for a first-order ODE with an integral constraint. Having shown that the free boundary problem has a smooth solution, we use it to construct the solution of the original optimal investment/consumption problem in a self-contained manner and without any recourse to the dynamic programming principle. Furthermore, we provide an explicit characterization of model parameters for which the value function is finite.

Stability of the utility maximization problem with random endowment in incomplete markets

We perform a stability analysis for the utility maximization problem in a general semimartingale model where both liquid and illiquid assets (random endowments) are present. Small misspecifications of preferences (as modeled via expected utility), as well as views of the world or the market model (as modeled via subjective probabilities) are considered. Simple sufficient conditions are given for the problem to be well-posed, in the sense the optimal wealth and the marginal utility-based prices are continuous functionals of preferences and probabilistic views.
