Rank-one perturbations and norm-attaining operators

The main goal of this article is to show that for every (reflexive) infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$ there exists a reflexive Banach space $Y$ and $T, R \in \mathcal{L}(X,Y)$ such that $R$ is a rank-one operator, $\|T+R\|>\|T\|$ but $T+R$ does not attain its norm. This answers a question posed by S. Dantas and the first two authors. Furthermore, motivated by the parallelism exhibited in the literature between the $V$-property introduced by V.A. Khatskevich, M.I. Ostrovskii and V.S. Shulman and the weak maximizing property introduced by R.M. Aron, D. García, D. Pellegrino and E.V. Teixeira, we also study the relationship between these two properties and norm-attaining perturbations of operators.

Topological properties in tensor products of Banach spaces

Given two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, we analyze when the projective tensor product $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ has Corson's property (C) or is weakly Lindelöf determined (WLD), subspace of a weakly compactly generated (WCG) space or subspace of a Hilbert generated space. For instance, we show that: (i) $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ is WLD if and only if both $X$ and $Y$ are WLD and all operators from $X$ to $Y^*$ and from $Y$ to $X^*$ have separable range; (ii) $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ is subspace of a WCG space if the same holds for both $X$ and $Y$ under the assumption that every operator from $X$ to $Y^*$ is compact; (iii) $\ell_p(Γ)\widehat{\otimes}_π\ell_q(Γ)$ is subspace of a Hilbert generated space for any $1< p,q<\infty$ such that $1/p+1/q<1$ and for any infinite set $Γ$. We also pay attention to the injective tensor product $X\widehat{\otimes}_\varepsilon Y$. In this case, the stability of property (C) and the property of being WLD turn out to be closely related to the condition that all regular Borel probability measures on the dual ball have countable Maharam type. Along this way, we generalize a result of Plebanek and Sobota that if $K$ is a compact space such that $C(K\times K)$ has property (C), then all regular Borel probability measures on $K$ have countable Maharam type. This generalization provides a consistent negative answer to a question of Ruess and Werner about the preservation of the $w^*$-angelicity of the dual unit ball under injective tensor products.

On the existence of non-norm-attaining operators

In this paper we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of non-norm-attaining operators in $\mathcal{L}(E, F)$. By using a theorem due to Pfitzner on James boundaries, we show that if there exists a relatively compact set $K$ of $\mathcal{L}(E, F)$ (in the weak operator topology) such that $0$ is an element of its closure (in the weak operator topology) but it is not in its norm closed convex hull, then we can guarantee the existence of an operator which does not attain its norm. This allows us to provide the following generalization of results due to Holub and Mujica. If $E$ is a reflexive space, $F$ is an arbitrary Banach space, and the pair $(E, F)$ has the bounded compact approximation property, then the following are equivalent: (i) $\mathcal{K}(E, F) = \mathcal{L}(E, F)$; (ii) Every operator from $E$ into $F$ attains its norm; (iii) $(\mathcal{L}(E,F), τ_c)^* = (\mathcal{L}(E, F), \| \cdot \|)^*$; where $τ_c$ denotes the topology of compact convergence. We conclude the paper presenting a characterization of the Schur property in terms of norm-attaining operators.

Norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms

In this paper we study the structure of the set $\mbox{Hom}(X,\mathbb{R})$ of all lattice homomorphisms from a Banach lattice $X$ into $\mathbb{R}$. Using the relation among lattice homomorphisms and disjoint families, we prove that the topological dual of the free Banach lattice $FBL(A)$ generated by a set $A$ contains a disjoint family of cardinality $2^{|A|}$, answering a question of B. de Pagter and A.W. Wickstead. We also deal with norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms. For classical Banach lattices, as $c_0$, $L_p$-, and $C(K)$-spaces, every lattice homomorphism on it attains its norm, which shows, in particular, that there is no James theorem for this class of functions. We prove that, indeed, every lattice homomorphism on $X$ and $C(K,X)$ attains its norm whenever $X$ has order continuous norm. On the other hand, we provide what seems to be the first example in the literature of a lattice homomorphism which does not attain its norm. In general, we study the existence and characterization of lattice homomorphisms not attaining their norm in free Banach lattices. As a consequence, it is shown that no Bishop-Phelps type theorem holds true in the Banach lattice setting, i.e. not every lattice homomorphism can be approximated by norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms.

Octahedral norms in free Banach lattices

In this paper, we study octahedral norms in free Banach lattices $FBL[E]$ generated by a Banach space $E$. We prove that if $E$ is an $L_1(μ)$-space, a predual of von Neumann algebra, a predual of a JBW$^*$-triple, the dual of an $M$-embedded Banach space, the disc algebra or the projective tensor product under some hypothesis, then the norm of $FBL[E]$ is octahedral. We get the analogous result when the topological dual $E^*$ of $E$ is almost square. We finish the paper by proving that the norm of the free Banach lattice generated by a Banach space of dimension $ \geq 2$ is nowhere Fréchet differentiable. Moreover, we discuss some open problems on this topic.

On projective Banach lattices of the form C(K) and FBL[E]

We show that if a Banach lattice is projective, then every bounded sequence that can be mapped by a homomorphism onto the basis of $c_0$ must contain an $\ell_1$-subsequence. As a consequence, if Banach lattices $\ell_p$ or $FBL[E]$ are projective, then $p=1$ or $E$ has the Schur property, respectively. On the other hand, we show that $C(K)$ is projective whenever $K$ is an absolute neighbourhood retract, answering a question by de Pagter and Wickstead.

Banach spaces with weak*-sequential dual ball

A topological space is said to be sequential if every sequentially closed subspace is closed. We consider Banach spaces with weak*-sequential dual ball. In particular, we show that if $X$ is a Banach space with weak*-sequentially compact dual ball and $Y \subset X$ is a subspace such that $Y$ and $X/Y$ have weak*-sequential dual ball, then $X$ has weak*-sequential dual ball. As an application we obtain that the Johnson-Lindenstrauss space $JL_2$ and $C(K)$ for $K$ scattered compact space of countable height are examples of Banach spaces with weak*-sequential dual ball, answering in this way a question of A. Plichko.

Weakly Radon-Nikodým Boolean algebras and independent sequences

A compact space is said to be weakly Radon-Nikodým (WRN) if it can be weak*-embedded into the dual of a Banach space not containing $\ell_1$. We investigate WRN Boolean algebras, i.e. algebras whose Stone space is WRN compact. We show that the class of WRN algebras and the class of minimally generated algebras are incomparable. In particular, we construct a minimally generated nonWRN Boolean algebra whose Stone space is a separable Rosenthal compactum, answering in this way a question of W. Marciszewski. We also study questions of J. Rodríguez and R. Haydon concerning measures and the existence of nontrivial convergent sequences on WRN compacta, obtaining partial results on some natural subclasses.

On weakly Radon-Nikodým compact spaces

A compact space is said to be weakly Radon-Nikodým if it is homeomorphic to a weak*-compact subset of the dual of a Banach space not containing an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$. In this work we provide an example of a continuous image of a Radon-Nikodým compact space which is not weakly Radon-Nikodým. Moreover, we define a superclass of the continuous images of weakly Radon-Nikodým compact spaces and study its relation with Corson compacta and weakly Radon-Nikodým compacta.

Riemann integrability versus weak continuity

In this paper we focus on the relation between Riemann integrability and weak continuity. A Banach space $X$ is said to have the weak Lebesgue property if every Riemann integrable function from $[0,1]$ into $X$ is weakly continuous almost everywhere. We prove that the weak Lebesgue property is stable under $\ell_1$-sums and obtain new examples of Banach spaces with and without this property. Furthermore, we characterize Dunford-Pettis operators in terms of Riemann integrability and provide a quantitative result about the size of the set of $τ$-continuous non Riemann integrable functions, with $τ$ a locally convex topology weaker than the norm topology.
