EPD-Serve: A Flexible Multimodal EPD Disaggregation Inference Serving System On Ascend

With the widespread adoption of large multimodal models, efficient inference across text, image, audio, and video modalities has become critical. However, existing multimodal inference systems typically employ monolithic architectures that tightly couple the Encode, Prefill, and Decode stages on homogeneous hardware, neglecting the heterogeneous computational characteristics of each stage. This design leads to inefficient resource utilization and limited system throughput. To address these issues, we propose EPD-Serve, a stage-level disaggregated inference serving system for multimodal models. EPD-Serve decouples the inference pipeline into independent Encode, Prefill, and Decode stages, enabling logical isolation and flexible co-located deployment through dynamic orchestration. Leveraging the Ascend interconnect topology, EPD-Serve introduces asynchronous feature prefetching between Encode and Prefill stages and a hierarchical grouped KV cache transmission mechanism between Prefill and Decode stages to improve cross-node communication efficiency. In addition, EPD-Serve incorporates multi-route scheduling, instance-level load balancing, and multi-stage hardware co-location with spatial multiplexing to better support diverse multimodal workloads. Comprehensive experiments on multimodal understanding models demonstrate that, under high-concurrency scenarios, EPD-Serve improves end-to-end throughput by 57.37-69.48% compared to PD-disaggregated deployment, while satisfying strict SLO constraints, including TTFT below 2000 ms and TPOT below 50 ms. These results highlight the effectiveness of stage-level disaggregation for optimizing multimodal large model inference systems.

Lieb lattices formed by real atoms on Ag(111) and their lattice constant dependent electronic properties

Scanning tunneling microscopy is a powerful tool to build artificial atomic structures even not exist in nature but possess exotic properties. We here constructed Lieb lattices with different lattice constants by real atoms, i.e., Fe atoms on Ag(111) and probed their electronic properties. We find a surprising long-range effective electron wavefunction overlap between Fe adatoms as it exhibits a 1/r2-dependence with the interatomic distance r instead of the theoretically predicted exponential one. Combining control experiments, tight-binding and Green's function calculations, we attribute the observed long-range overlap to be enabled by the surface state. Our findings not only enrich the understanding of the electron wavefunction overlap, but also provide a convenient platform to design and explore the artificial structures and future devices with real atoms.

Long-time asymptotics and stability for the sine-Gordon equation

In this paper, we study the long-time dynamics and stability properties of the sine-Gordon equation $$f_{tt}-f_{xx}+\sin f=0.$$ Firstly, we use the nonlinear steepest descent for Riemann-Hilbert problems to compute the long-time asymptotics of the solutions to the sine-Gordon equation whose initial condition belongs to some weighted Sobolev spaces. Secondly, we study the asymptotic stability of the sine-Gordon equation. It is known that the obstruction to the asymptotic stability of the sine-Gordon equation in the energy space is the existence of small breathers which is also closely related to the emergence of wobbling kinks. Combining the long-time asymptotics and a refined approximation argument, we analyze the asymptotic stability properties of the sine-Gordon equation in weighted energy spaces. Our stability analysis gives a criterion for the weight which is sharp up to the endpoint so that the asymptotic stability holds.

Long-time asymptotics of the modified KdV equation in weighted Sobolev spaces

The long time behavior of solutions to the defocusing modified Korteweg-de vries (MKdV) equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou and its reformulation by Dieng and McLaughlin through $\overline{\partial}$-derivatives. To extend the asymptotics to solutions with initial data in lower regularity spaces, we apply a global approximation via PDE techniques.

On the $1$d cubic NLS with a non-generic potential

We consider the $1d$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an external potential $V$ that is non-generic. Without making any parity assumption on the data, but assuming that the zero energy resonance of the associated Schrödinger operator is either odd or even, we prove global-in-time quantitative bounds and asymptotics for small solutions. First, we use a simple modification of the basis for the distorted Fourier transform (dFT) to resolve the (possible) discontinuity at zero energy due to the presence of a resonance and the absence of symmetry of the solution. We then use a refined analysis of the low frequency structure of the (modified) nonlinear spectral distribution, and employ smoothing estimates in the setting of non-generic potentials.

The $1$d nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a weighted $L^1$ potential

We consider the $1d$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a large external potential $V$ with no bound states. We prove global regularity and quantitative bounds for small solutions under mild assumptions on $V$. In particular, we do not require any differentiability of $V$, and make spatial decay assumptions that are weaker than those found in the literature (see for example \cite{Del,N,GPR}). We treat both the case of generic and non-generic potentials, with some additional symmetry assumptions in the latter case. Our approach is based on the combination of three main ingredients: the Fourier transform adapted to the Schrödinger operator, basic bounds on pseudo-differential operators that exploit the structure of the Jost function, and improved local decay and smoothing-type estimates. An interesting aspect of the proof is an "approximate commutation" identity for a suitable notion of a vectorfield, which allows us to simplify the previous approaches and extend the known results to a larger class of potentials. Finally, under our weak assumptions we can include the interesting physical case of a barrier potential as well as recover the result of \cite{MMS} for a delta potential.

Ultrasensitive Sub-monolayer Palladium Induced Chirality Switching and Topological Evolution of Skyrmions

Chiral spin textures are fundamentally interesting, with promise for device applications. Stabilizing chirality is conventionally achieved by introducing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in asymmetric multilayers where the thickness of each layer is at least a few monolayers. Here we report an ultrasensitive chirality switching in (Ni/Co)n multilayer induced by capping with only 0.22 monolayer of Pd. Using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy, we monitor the gradual evolution of domain walls from left-handed to right-handed Neel walls and quantify the DMI induced by the Pd capping layer. We also observe the chiral evolution of a skyrmion during the DMI switching, where no significant topological protection is found as the skyrmion winding number varies. This corresponds to a minimum energy cost of < 1 attojoule during the skyrmion chirality switching. Our results demonstrate the detailed chirality evolution within skyrmions during the DMI sign switching, which is relevant to practical applications of skyrmionic devices.

In-plane Néel wall chirality and orientation of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector in magnetic films

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is of great interest as it can stabilize chiral spin structures in thin films. Experiments verifying the orientation of the interfacial DMI vector remain rare, in part due to the difficulty of separating vector components of DMI. In this study, Fe/Ni bilayers and Co/Ni multilayers were deposited epitaxially onto Cu(001) and Pt(111) substrates, respectively. By tailoring the effective anisotropy, spin reorientation transitions (SRTs) are employed to probe the orientation of the DMI vector by measuring the spin structure of domain walls on both sides of the SRTs. The interfacial DMI is found to be sufficiently strong to stabilize chiral Néel walls in the out-of-plane magnetized regimes, while achiral Néel walls are observed in the in-plane magnetized regimes. These findings experimentally confirm that the out-of-plane component of the DMI vector is insignificant in these fcc(001) and fcc(111) oriented interfaces, even in the presence of atomic steps.

Nonlinear modulational instabililty of the Stokes waves in 2d full water waves

The well-known Stokes waves refer to periodic traveling waves under the gravity at the free surface of a two dimensional full water wave system. In this paper, we prove that small-amplitude Stokes waves with infinite depth are nonlinearly unstable under long-wave perturbations. Our approach is based on the modulational approximation of the water wave system and the instability mechanism of the focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Orbital stability and instability of periodic wave solutions for $ϕ^{4n}$-models

In this work we study the orbital stability/instability in the energy space of a specific family of periodic wave solutions of the general $ϕ^{4n}$-model for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$. This family of periodic solutions are orbiting around the origin in the corresponding phase portrait and, in the standing case, are related (in a proper sense) with the aperiodic Kink solution that connect the states $-\tfrac{1}{2}$ with $\tfrac{1}{2}$. In the traveling case, we prove the orbital instability in the whole energy space for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$, while in the standing case we prove that, under some additional parity assumptions, these solutions are orbitally stable for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$.

Magnetism of epitaxial Tb films on W(110) studied by spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy

Thin epitaxial films of Tb metal were grown on a clean W(110) substrate in ultra-high vacuum and studied in-situ by low-energy electron microscopy. Annealed films present magnetic contrast in spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy. The energy dependence of the electron reflectivity was determined and a maximum value of its spin asymmetry of about 1\% was measured. The magnetization direction of the Tb films is in-plane. Upon raising the temperature, no change in the domain distribution is observed, while the asymmetry in the electron reflectivity decreases when approaching the critical temperature, following a power law $ \sim (1 - T/T_C)^β$ with a critical exponent $β$ of 0.39.

Non-divergence Parabolic Equations of Second Order with Critical Drift in Lebesgue Spaces

We consider uniformly parabolic equations and inequalities of second order in the non-divergence form with drift \[-u_{t}+Lu=-u_{t}+\sum_{ij}a_{ij}D_{ij}u+\sum b_{i}D_{i}u=0\,(\geq0,\,\leq0)\] in some domain $Q\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We prove growth theorems and the interior Harnack inequality as the main results. In this paper, we will only assume the drift $b$ is in certain Lebesgue spaces which are critical under the parabolic scaling but not necessarily to be bounded. In the last section, some applications of the interior Harnack inequality are presented. In particular, we show there is a "universal" spectral gap for the associated elliptic operator. The counterpart for uniformly elliptic equations of second order in non-divergence form is shown in \cite{S10}.

Non-divergence Parabolic Equations of Second Order with Critical Drift in Morrey Spaces

We consider uniformly parabolic equations and inequalities of second order in the non-divergence form with drift \[-u_{t}+Lu=-u_{t}+\sum_{ij}a_{ij}D_{ij}u+\sum b_{i}D_{i}u=0\,(\geq0,\,\leq0)\] in some domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We prove a variant of Aleksandrov-Bakelman-Pucci-Krylov-Tso estimate with $L^{p}$ norm of the inhomogeneous term for some number $p<n+1$. Based on it, we derive the growth theorems and the interior Harnack inequality. In this paper, we will only assume the drift $b$ is in certain Morrey spaces defined below which are critical under the parabolic scaling but not necessarily to be bounded. This is a continuation of the work in \cite{GC}.

Strichartz Estimates for Charge Transfer Models

In this note, we prove Strichartz estimates for scattering states of scalar charge transfer models in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. Based on the idea of the proof of Strichartz estimates which follows \cite{CM,RSS}, we also show the energy of the whole evolution is bounded independently of time without using the phase space method, for example, in \cite{Graf}. One can easily generalize our argument to $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq3$. Finally, in the last section, we discuss the extension of these results to matrix charge transfer models in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$.

Anatomy and giant enhancement of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of cobalt-graphene heterostructures

We report strongly enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of Co films by graphene coating from both first-principles and experiments. Our calculations show that graphene can dramatically boost the surface anisotropy of Co films up to twice the value of its pristine counterpart and can extend the out-of-plane effective anisotropy up to unprecedented thickness of 25~Å. These findings are supported by our experiments on graphene coating on Co films grown on Ir substrate. Furthermore, we report layer-resolved and orbital-hybridization-resolved anisotropy analysis which help understanding the physical mechanisms of PMA and more practically can help design structures with giant PMA. As an example, we propose super-exchange stabilized Co-graphene heterostructures with a robust out-of-plane constant effective PMA and linearly increasing interfacial anisotropy as a function of film thickness. These findings point towards possibilities to engineer graphene/ferromagnetic metal heterostructures with giant magnetic anisotropy more than 20 times larger compared to conventional multilayers, which constitutes a hallmark for future graphene and traditional spintronic technologies.

On Second Order Elliptic and Parabolic Equations of Mixed Type

It is known that solutions to second order uniformly elliptic and parabolic equations, either in divergence or nondivergence (general) form, are Hölder continuous and satisfy the interior Harnack inequality. We show that even in the one-dimensional case ($x\in R^1$), these properties are not preserved for equations of mixed divergence-nondivergence structure: for elliptic equations. \begin{equation*} D_i(a^1_{ij}D_ju)+a^2_{ij}D_{ij}u=0, \end{equation*} and parabolic equations \begin{equation*} p\partial_t u=D_i(a_{ij}D_ju), \end{equation*} where $p=p(t,x)$ is a bounded strictly positive function. The Hölder continuity and Harnack inequality are known if $p$ does not depend either on $t$ or on $x$. We essentially use homogenization techniques in our construction. Bibliography: 23 titles.

Real Space Imaging of the Verwey Transition at the (100) Surface of Magnetite

Effects of the Verwey transition on the (100) surface of magnetite were studied using scanning tunelling microscopy and spin polarized low-energy electron microsccopy. On cooling through the transition temperature Tv, the initially flat surface undergoes a roof-like distortion with a periodicity of ~0.5 um due to ferroelastic twinning within monoclinic domains of the low-temperature monoclinic structure. The monoclinic c axis orients in the surface plane, along the [001]c directions. At the atomic scale, the charge-ordered sqrt2xsqrt2R45 reconstruction of the (100) surface is unperturbed by the bulk transition, and is continuous over the twin boundaries. Time resolved low-energy electron microscopy movies reveal the structural transition to be first-order at the surface, indicating that the bulk transition is not an extension of the Verwey-like sqrt2xsqrt2R45 reconstruction. Although conceptually similar, the charge-ordered phases of the (100) surface and sub-Tv bulk of magnetite are unrelated phenomena.

Room Temperature In-plane <100> Magnetic Easy Axis for Fe3O4/SrTiO3(001):Nb Grown by Infrared PLD

We examine the magnetic easy-axis directions of stoichiometric magnetite films grown on SrTiO3:Nb by infrared pulsed-laser deposition. Spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy reveals that the individual magnetic domains are magnetized along the in-plane <100> film directions. Magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements show that the maxima of the remanence and coercivity are also along in-plane <100> film directions. This easy-axis orientation differs from bulk magnetite and films prepared by other techniques, establishing that the magnetic anisotropy can be tuned by film growth.
