Escape of entropy for countable Markov shifts

In this paper we study ergodic theory of countable Markov shifts. These are dynamical systems defined over non-compact spaces. Our main result relates the escape of mass, the measure theoretic entropy, and the entropy at infinity of the system. This relation has several consequences. For example we obtain that the entropy map is upper semi-continuous and that the ergodic measures form an entropy dense subset. Our results also provide new proofs of results describing the existence and stability of the measure of maximal entropy. We relate the entropy at infinity with the Hausdorff dimension of the set of recurrent points that escape on average. Of independent interest, we prove a version of Katok's entropy formula in this non-compact setting.

Perfect Matchings in Inhomogeneous Random Bipartite Graphs in Random Environment

In this note we study inhomogeneous random bipartite graphs in random environment. These graphs can be thought of as an extension of the classical Erdös-Rényi random graphs in a random environment. We show that the expected number of perfect matchings obeys a precise quenched asymptotic and that it can be approximated using an iterative process that converges exponentially fast.

Recurrence and transience for suspension flows

We study the thermodynamic formalism for suspension flows over countable Markov shifts with roof functions not necessarily bounded away from zero. We establish conditions to ensure the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium measures for regular potentials. We define the notions of recurrence and transience of a potential in this setting. We define the "renewal flow", which is a symbolic model for a class of flows with diverse recurrence features. We study the corresponding thermodynamic formalism, establishing conditions for the existence of equilibrium measures and phase transitions. Applications are given to suspension flows defined over interval maps having parabolic fixed points.

The Scaling Mean and a Law of Large Permanents

In this paper we study two types of means of the entries of a nonnegative matrix: the \emph{permanental mean}, which is defined using permanents, and the \emph{scaling mean}, which is defined in terms of an optimization problem. We explore relations between these two means, making use of important results by Ergorychev and Falikman (the van~der~Waerden conjecture), Friedland, Sinkhorn, and others. We also define a scaling mean for functions in a much more general context. Our main result is a Law of Large Permanents, a pointwise ergodic theorem for permanental means of dynamically defined matrices that expresses the limit as a functional scaling mean. The concepts introduced in this paper are general enough so to include as particular cases certain classical types of means, as for example symmetric means and Muirhead means. As a corollary, we reobtain a formula of Halász and Székely for the limit of the symmetric means of a stationary random process.

Zero temperature limits of Gibbs states for almost-additive potentials

This paper is devoted to study ergodic optimisation problems for almost-additive sequences of functions (rather than a fixed potential) defined over countable Markov shifts (that is a non-compact space). Under certain assumptions we prove that any accumulation point of a family of Gibbs equilibrium measures is a maximising measure. Applications are given in the study of the joint spectral radius and to multifractal analysis of Lyapunov exponent of non-conformal maps.

Thermodynamic formalism for the positive geodesic flow on the modular surface

In this note we study the thermodynamic formalism for the positive geodesic flow on the modular surface. We define the pressure and prove the variational principle. We also establish conditions for the the pressure to be real analytic and for the potentials to have unique equilibrium states. The results in this paper were largely superceded by "Phase transitions for suspension flows" by Iommi and Jordan arXiv:1202.0849

Multifractal analysis of Birkhoff averages for countable Markov maps

In this paper we prove a multifractal formalism of Birkhoff averages for interval maps with countably many branches. Furthermore, we prove that under certain regularity assumptions on the potential the Birkhoff spectrum is real analytic. Applications of these results to number theory are also given. Finally, we compute the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points for which the Birkhoff average is infinite.

Natural equilibrium states for multimodal maps

This paper is devoted to the study of the thermodynamic formalism for a class of real multimodal maps. This class contains, but it is larger than, Collet-Eckmann. For a map in this class, we prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the geometric potentials $-t \log|Df|$, for the largest possible interval of parameters $t$. We also study the regularity and convexity properties of the pressure function, completely characterising the first order phase transitions. Results concerning the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures with respect to the Lebesgue measure are also obtained.

Multifractal analysis of Lyapunov exponent for the backward continued fraction map

In this note we study the multifractal spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for interval maps with infinitely many branches and a parabolic fixed point. It turns out that, in strong contrast with the hyperbolic case, the domain of the spectrum is unbounded and points of non-differentiability might exist. Moreover, the spectrum is not concave. We establish conditions that ensure the existence of inflection points. We also study the thermodynamic formalism for such maps. We prove that the pressure function is real analytic in a certain interval and then it becomes equal to zero.
