Regularity and energy transfer for a nonlinear beam equation

In this paper we study some key effects of a discontinuous forcing term in a fourth order wave equation on a bounded domain, modeling the adhesion of an elastic beam with a substrate through an elastic-breakable interaction. By using a spectral decomposition method we show that the main effects induced by the nonlinearity at the transition from attached to detached states can be traced in a loss of regularity of the solution and in a migration of the total energy through the scales.

Singular Diffusion with Neumann boundary conditions

In this paper we develop an existence theory for the nonlinear initial-boundary value problem with singular diffusion $\partial_t u = \text{div}(k(x)\nabla G(u))$, $u|_{t=0}=u_0$ with Neumann boundary conditions $k(x)\nabla G(u)\cdot ν= 0$. Here $x\in B\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, a bounded open set with locally Lipchitz boundary, and with $ν$ as the unit outer normal. The function $G$ is Lipschitz continuous and nondecreasing, while $k(x)$ is diagonal matrix. We show that any two weak entropy solutions $u$ and $v$ satisfy $\Vert{u(t)-v(t)}\Vert_{L^1(B)}\le \Vert{u|_{t=0}-v|_{t=0}}\Vert_{L^1(B)}e^{Ct}$, for almost every $t\ge 0$, and a constant $C=C(k,G,B)$. If we restrict to the case when the entries $k_i$ of $k$ depend only on the corresponding component, $k_i=k_i(x_i)$, we show that there exists an entropy solution, thus establishing in this case that the problem is well-posed in the sense of Hadamard.

Nonlinear waves in adhesive strings

We study a 1D semilinear wave equation modeling the dynamic of an elastic string interacting with a rigid substrate through an adhesive layer. The constitutive law of the adhesive material is assumed elastic up to a finite critical state, beyond such a value the stress discontinuously drops to zero. Therefore the semilinear equation is characterized by a source term presenting jump discontinuity. Well-posedness of the initial boundary value problem of Neumann type, as well as qualitative properties of the solutions are studied and the evolution of different initial conditions are numerically investigated.

Well-posedness for a monotone solver for traffic junctions

In this paper we aim at proving well-posedness of solutions obtained as vanishing viscosity limits for the Cauchy problem on a traffic junction where $m$ incoming and $n$ outgoing roads meet. The traffic on each road is governed by a scalar conservation law $ ρ_{h,t} + f_h(ρ_h)_x = 0$, for $h\in \{1,\ldots, m+n\}$. Our proof relies upon the complete description of the set of road-wise constant solutions and its properties, which is of some interest on its own. Then we introduce a family of Kruzhkov-type adapted entropies at the junction and state a definition of admissible solution in the same spirit as in \cite{diehl, ColomboGoatinConstraint, scontrainte, AC_transmission, germes}.

Convergence of the regularized short pulse equation to the short pulse one

We consider the regularized short-pulse equation, which contains nonlinear dis- persive effects. We prove that as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solutions of the dispersive equation converge to discontinuous weak solutions of the short-pulse one. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of the compensated compactness method in the Lp setting.

Convergence of the Ostrovsky equation to the Ostrovsky-Hunter one

We consider the Ostrovsky equation, which contains nonlinear dispersive effects. We prove that as the diffusion parameter tend to zero, the solutions of the dispersive equation converge to discontinuous weak solutions of the Ostrovsky-Hunter equation. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of the compensated compactness method in the L^p setting.

Analytic solutions and Singularity formation for the Peakon b--Family equations

Using the Abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski Theorem we prove that the $b$-family equation admits, locally in time, a unique analytic solution. Moreover, if the initial data is real analytic and it belongs to $H^s$ with $s > 3/2$, and the momentum density $u_0 - u_{0,{xx}}$ does not change sign, we prove that the solution stays analytic globally in time, for $b\geq 1$. Using pseudospectral numerical methods, we study, also, the singularity formation for the $b$-family equations with the singularity tracking method. This method allows us to follow the process of the singularity formation in the complex plane as the singularity approaches the real axis, estimating the rate of decay of the Fourier spectrum.
