Toricness and smoothness criteria for spherical varieties

We prove equivalent numerical conditions for a complete spherical variety to admit a toric structure, and for the smoothness of an arbitrary spherical variety along any given G-orbit. The conditions are in terms of spherical skeletons, a coarse ''subset'' of the Luna-Vust data of a spherical variety. Our smoothness criterion improves upon classical criteria by removing the dependency on external reference tables.

Equivariant models of spherical varieties

Let $G$ be a connected semisimple group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0. Let $Y=G/H$ be a spherical homogeneous space of $G$, and let $Y'$ be a spherical embedding of $Y$. Let $k_0$ be a subfield of $k$. Let $G_0$ be a $k_0$ -model ($k_0$-form) of $G$. We show that if $G_0$ is an inner form of a split group and if the subgroup $H$ of $G$ is spherically closed, then $Y$ admits a $G_0$-equivariant $k_0$-model. If we replace the assumption that $H$ is spherically closed by the stronger assumption that $H$ coincides with its normalizer in $G$, then $Y$ and $Y'$ admit compatible $G_0$-equivariant $k_0$-models, and these models are unique.

Gorenstein spherical Fano varieties

We obtain a combinatorial description of Gorenstein spherical Fano varieties in terms of certain polytopes, generalizing the combinatorial description of Gorenstein toric Fano varieties by reflexive polytopes and its extension to Gorenstein horospherical Fano varieties due to Pasquier. Using this description, we show that the rank of the Picard group of an arbitrary $d$-dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Gorenstein spherical Fano variety is bounded by $2d$. This paper also contains an overview of the description of the natural representative of the anticanonical divisor class of a spherical variety due to Brion.

Homogeneous spherical data of orbits in spherical embeddings

Let $G$ be a connected reductive complex algebraic group. Luna assigned to any spherical homogeneous space $G/H$ a combinatorial object called a homogeneous spherical datum. By a theorem of Losev, this object uniquely determines $G/H$ up to $G$-equivariant isomorphism. In this paper, we determine the homogeneous spherical datum of a $G$-orbit $X_0$ in a spherical embedding $G/H \hookrightarrow X$. As an application, we obtain a description of the colored fan associated to the spherical embedding $X_0 \hookrightarrow \bar{X_0}$.

The Cox ring of a spherical embedding

Let G be a connected reductive group and G/H a spherical homogeneous space. We show that the ideal of relations between a natural set of generators of the Cox ring of a G-embedding of G/H can be obtained by homogenizing certain equations which depend only on the homogeneous space. Using this result, we describe some examples of spherical homogeneous spaces such that the Cox ring of any of their G-embeddings is defined by one equation.
