Evidence of exchange-striction and charge disproportionation in the magneto-electric material Ni3TeO6

The chiral magneto-electric compound Ni3TeO6 is investigated through temperature-dependent synchrotron-based powder x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy between 15 to 300 K. Our work provides direct evidence for the exchange-striction in the material around the concomitant onset point of collinear antiferromagnetic and magneto-electric phases. The x-ray absorption near edge spectra and x-ray photoelectron spectra show that the sample consists of both Ni2+ and Ni3+ ions in the lattice. The ionic state of Ni is found to be quite robust, and it is largely independent of the preparation route. Additionally, the minority Te4+ state is found to coexist with the majority Te6+ state, which may arise from the charge disproportionation between Ni and Te ions (Ni2+ + Te6+ --> Ni3+ + Te4+). The observed mixed valency of Ni is also confirmed by the total paramagnetic moment per Ni atom in the system. This mixed valency in the metal ions and the exchange-striction may be attributed to the observed magneto-electric effect in the system.

Revealing the local structure of CuMo$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_4$ solid solutions by multi-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy

The effect of tungsten substitution with molybdenum on the structure of CuMo$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_4$ ($x$ = 0.20, 0.30, 0.50, 0.75) solid solutions was studied by multi-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The simultaneous analysis of EXAFS spectra measured at several (Cu K-edge, Mo K-edge and W L$_3$-edge) absorption edges was performed by the reverse Monte Carlo method taking into account multiple-scattering effects. The degree of distortion of the coordination shells and its dependence on the composition were estimated from partial radial distribution functions (RDFs) $g(r)$ and bond angle distribution functions (BADFs) $f(φ)$. The analysis of partial RDFs suggests that the structure of solid solutions is mainly determined by the tungsten-related sublattice, while molybdenum atoms adapt to a locally distorted environment. As a result, the coordination of both tungsten and molybdenum atoms remains octahedral as in CuWO$_4$ for all the studied compositions.

Efficient artificial mineralization route to decontaminate Arsenic(III) polluted water -the Tooeleite Way

Increasing exposure to arsenic (As) contaminated ground water is a great threat to humanity. Suitable technology for As immobilization and removal from water, especially for As(III) than As(V), is not available yet. However, it is known that As(III) is more toxic than As(V) and most groundwater aquifers, particularly the Gangetic basin in India, is alarmingly contaminated with it. In search of a viable solution here, we took a cue from the natural mineralization of Tooeleite, a mineral containing Fe(III) and As(III)ions, grown under acidic condition, in presence of SO42- ions. Complying to this natural process, we could grow and separate Tooeleite-like templates from Fe(III) and As(III) containing water at overall circumneutral pH and in absence of SO42- ions by using highly polar Zn-only ends of wurtzite ZnS nanorods as insoluble nano-acidic-surfaces. The central idea here is to exploit these insoluble nano-acidic-surfaces (called as INAS in the manuscript) as nucleation centres for Tooeleite growth while keeping the overall pH of the aqueous media neutral. Therefore, we propose a novel method of artificial mineralization of As(III) by mimicking a natural process at nanoscale.

LaSrVMoO$_6$: A case study for $A$-site covalency-driven local cationic order in double perovskites

An unusual atomic scale chemical fluctuation in LaSrVMoO$_6$, in terms of narrow patches of La,V and Sr,Mo-rich phases, has been probed in detail to understand the origin of such a chemical state. Exhaustive tuning of the equilibrium synthesis parameters showed that the extent of phase separation can never be melted down below an unit cell dimension making it impossible to achieve the conventional $B$-site ordered structure, which establishes that the observed `inhomogeneous' patch-like structure with minimum dimension of few angstroms is a reality in LaSrVMoO$_6$. Therefore, another type of local chemical order, hitherto unknown in double perovskites, gets introduced here. X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy elemental mapping, magnetic, and various spectroscopic studies have been carried out on samples, synthesized under different conditions. These experimental results in conjunction with {\it ab-initio} electronic structure calculation revealed that it is the energy stability, gained by typical La-O covalency as in LaVO$_3$, that leads to the preferential La,V and Sr,Mo ionic proximity, and the consequent patchy structure.
