A fourth-order regularization of the curvature flow of immersed plane curves with Dirichlet boundary conditions

We consider a fourth-order regularization of the curvature flow for an immersed plane curve with fixed boundary, using an elastica-type functional depending on a small positive parameter $\varepsilon$. We show that the approximating flow smoothly converges, as $\varepsilon \to 0^+$, to the curvature flow of the curve with Dirichlet boundary conditions for all times before the first singularity of the limit flow.

A free boundary singular transport equation as a formal limit of a discrete dynamical system

We study the continuous version of a hyperbolic rescaling of a discrete game, called open mancala. The resulting PDE turns out to be a singular transport equation, with a forcing term taking values in $\{0,1\}$, and discontinuous in the solution itself. We prove existence and uniqueness of a certain formulation of the problem, based on a nonlocal equation satisfied by the free boundary dividing the region where the forcing is one (active region) and the region where there is no forcing (tail region). Several examples, most notably the Riemann problem, are provided, related to singularity formation. Interestingly, the solution can be obtained by a suitable vertical rearrangement of a multi-function. Furthermore, the PDE admits a Lyapunov functional.

A non-parametric Plateau problem with partial free boundary

We consider a Plateau problem in codimension $1$ in the non-parametric setting. A Dirichlet boundary datum is given only on part of the boundary $\partial Ω$ of a bounded convex domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. Where the Dirichlet datum is not prescribed, we allow a free contact with the horizontal plane. We show existence of a solution, and prove regularity for the corresponding minimal surface. Finally we compare these solutions with the classical minimal surfaces of Meeks and Yau, and show that they are equivalent when the Dirichlet boundary datum is assigned in at most $2$ disjoint arcs of $\partial Ω$.

A complete invariant for closed surfaces in the three-sphere

Associated to an embedded surface in the $3$-sphere, we construct a diagram of fundamental groups, and prove that it is a complete invariant, wherefrom we deduce complete invariants of handlebody links, tunnels of handlebody links, and spatial graphs. The main ingredients in the proof of the completeness are a generalization of the Kneser conjecture for $3$-manifolds with boundary proved also here, and extensions of Waldhausen's theorem by Evans, Tucker and Swarup. Computable invariants of handlebody links derived therefrom are calculated.

A table of $n$-component handlebody links of genus $n+1$ up to six crossings

A handlebody link is a union of handlebodies of positive genus embedded in 3-space, which generalizes the notion of links in classical knot theory. In this paper, we consider handlebody links with one genus 2 handlebody and $n-1$ solid tori, $n>1$. Our main result is the complete classification of such handlebody links with six crossings or less, up to ambient isotopy.

Minimizing movements for forced anisotropic mean curvature flow of partitions with mobilities

Under suitable assumptions on the family of anisotropies, we prove the existence of a weak global $\frac{1}{n+1}$-Hölder continuous in time mean curvature flow with mobilities of a bounded anisotropic partition in any dimension using the method of minimizing movements. The result is extended to the case when suitable driving forces are present. We improve the Hölder exponent to $\frac12$ in the case of partitions with the same anisotropy and the same mobility and provide a weak comparision result in this setting for a weak anisotropic mean curvature flow of a partition and an anisotropic mean curvature two-phase flow.

Numerical irreducibility criteria for handlebody links

In this paper we define a set of numerical criteria for a handlebody link to be irreducible. It provides an effective, easy-to-implement method to determine the irreducibility of handlebody links; particularly, it recognizes the irreducibility of all handlebody knots in the Ishii-Kishimoto-Moriuchi-Suzuki knot table and most handlebody links in the Bellettini-Paolini-Paolini-Wang link table.

On the area of the graph of a piecewise smooth map from the plane to the plane with a curve discontinuity

In this paper we provide an estimate from above for the value of the relaxed area functional for a map defined on a bounded domain of the plane with values in the plane and discontinuous on a regular simple curve with two endpoints. We show that, under suitable assumptions, the relaxed area does not exceed the area of the regular part of the map, with the addition of a singular term measuring the area of a disk type solution of the Plateau's problem spanning the two traces of the map on the jump. The result is valid also when the area minimizing surface has self intersections. A key element in our argument is to show the existence of what we call a semicartesian parametrization of this surface, namely a conformal parametrization defined on a suitable parameter space, which is the identity in the first component. To prove our result, various tools of parametric minimal surface theory are used, as well as some result from Morse theory.

The $Γ$-limit for singularly perturbed functionals of Perona-Malik type in arbitrary dimension

In this paper we generalize to arbitrary dimensions a one-dimensional equicoerciveness and $Γ$-convergence result for a second derivative perturbation of Perona-Malik type functionals. Our proof relies on a new density result in the space of special functions of bounded variation with vanishing diffuse gradient part. This provides a direction of investigation to derive approximation for functionals with discontinuities penalized with a "cohesive" energy, that is, whose cost depends on the actual opening of the discontinuity.

Convergence of the one-dimensional Cahn-Hilliard equation

We consider the Cahn-Hilliard equation in one space dimension with scaling a small parameter εand a non-convex potential W. In the limit \espilon \to 0, under the assumption that the initial data are energetically well-prepared, we show the convergence to a Stefan problem. The proof is based on variational methods and exploits the gradient flow structure of the Cahn-Hilliard equation.

Constraining spacetime torsion with LAGEOS

We compute the corrections to the orbital Lense-Thirring effect (or frame-dragging) in the presence of spacetime torsion. We derive the equations of motion of a test body in the gravitational field of a rotating axisymmetric massive body, using the parametrized framework of Mao, Tegmark, Guth and Cabi. We calculate the secular variations of the longitudes of the node and of the pericenter. We also show how the LAser GEOdynamics Satellites (LAGEOS) can be used to constrain torsion parameters. We report the experimental constraints obtained using both the nodes and perigee measurements of the orbital Lense-Thirring effect. This makes LAGEOS and Gravity Probe B (GPB) complementary frame-dragging and torsion experiments, since they constrain three different combinations of torsion parameters.

Constraining spacetime torsion with the Moon and Mercury

We report a search for new gravitational physics phenomena based on Einstein-Cartan theory of General Relativity including spacetime torsion. Starting from the parametrized torsion framework of Mao, Tegmark, Guth and Cabi, we analyze the motion of test bodies in the presence of torsion, and in particular we compute the corrections to the perihelion advance and to the orbital geodetic precession of a satellite. We describe the torsion field by means of three parameters, and we make use of the autoparallel trajectories, which in general may differ from geodesics when torsion is present. We derive the equations of motion of a test body in a spherically symmetric field, and the equations of motion of a satellite in the gravitational field of the Sun and the Earth. We calculate the secular variations of the longitudes of the node and of the pericenter of the satellite. The computed secular variations show how the corrections to the perihelion advance and to the orbital de Sitter effect depend on the torsion parameters. All computations are performed under the assumptions of weak field and slow motion. To test our predictions, we use the measurements of the Moon geodetic precession from lunar laser ranging data, and the measurements of Mercury's perihelion advance from planetary radar ranging data. These measurements are then used to constrain suitable linear combinations of the torsion parameters.

Lorentzian varifolds and applications to closed relativistic strings

We develop a suitable generalization of Almgren's theory of varifolds in a lorentzian setting, focusing on area, first variation, rectifiability, compactness and closure issues. Motivated by the asymptotic behaviour of the scaled hyperbolic Ginzburg-Landau equations, and by the presence of singularities in lorentzian minimal surfaces, we introduce, within the varifold class, various notions of generalized minimal timelike submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in flat Minkowski spacetime, which are global in character and admit conserved quantities, such as relativistic energy and momentum. In particular, we show that stationary lorentzian 2-varifolds properly include the class of classical relativistic and subrelativistic strings. We also discuss several examples.
