Magnetization and transport properties of single crystalline RPd${_2}$P${_2}$ (R=Y, La-Nd, Sm-Ho, Yb)

Single crystals of RPd${_2}$P${_2}$ (R=Y, La-Nd, Sm-Ho, Yb) were grown out of a high temperature solution rich in Pd and P and characterized by room-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, anisotropic temperature- and field-dependent magnetization and temperature-dependent in-plane resistivity measurements. In this series, YPd${_2}$P${_2}$ and LaPd${_2}$P${_2}$ and YbPd${_2}$P${_2}$ (with Yb$^{+2}$) are non local-moment bearing, whereas CePd${_2}$P${_2}$ and PrPd${_2}$P${_2}$ order at low temperature with a ferromagnetic component along the crystallographic c-axis. The rest of the series manifest low temperature antiferromagnetic ordering. EuPd${_2}$P${_2}$ has Eu$^{+2}$ ions and both EuPd${_2}$P${_2}$ and GdPd${_2}$P${_2}$ have isotropic paramagnetic susceptibilities consistent with $L = 0$ and $J=S=\frac{7}{2}$ and exhibit multiple magnetic transitions. For R=Eu-Dy, there are multiple, $T>1.8$ K transitions in zero applied magnetic field and for R=Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, and Dy there are clear metamagnetic transitions at T=2.0 K for $H<55$ kOe. Strong anisotropies arising mostly from crystal electric field (CEF) effects were observed for most magnetic rare earths with $L\neq 0$. The experimentally estimated CEF parameters B$^2_0$ were calculated from the anisotropic paramagnetic $θ_{ab}$ and $ θ_{c}$ values and compared to theoretical trends across the rare earth series. The ordering temperatures as well as the polycrystalline averaged paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, $θ_{ave}$, were extracted from magnetization and resistivity measurements, and compared to the de-Gennes factor.

Correlation of the Superconducting Critical Temperature with Spin and Orbital Excitation Energies In (Ca{x}La{1-x})(Ba{1.75-x}La{0.25+x})Cu{3}O{y} as Measured by Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Electronic spin and orbital (dd) excitation spectra of (Ca{x}La{1-x})(Ba{1.75-x}La{0.25+x})Cu{3}O{y} samples are measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). In this compound, Tc of samples with identical hole dopings is strongly affected by the Ca/Ba substitution x due to subtle variations in the lattice constants, while crystal symmetry and disorder as measured by line-widths are x independent. We examine two extreme values of x and two extreme values of hole-doping content y corresponding to antiferromagnetic and superconducting states. The x dependence of the spin mode energies is approximately the same for both the antiferromagnetic and superconducting samples. This clearly demonstrates that RIXS is sensitive to J even in doped samples. A positive correlation between the superexchange J and the maximum of Tc at optimal doping Tc^{max} is observed. We also measured the x dependence of the d_{xy} -> d_{x^2-y^2} and d_{xz/yz} -> d_{x^2-y^2} orbital splittings. We infer that the effect of the unresolved d_{3z^2-r^2} -> d_{x^2-y^2} excitation on Tc^{max} is much smaller than the effect of J. There appears to be dispersion in the d_{xy} -> d_{x^2-y^2} peak of up to 0.05 eV. Our fitting of the peaks furthermore indicates an asymmetric dispersion for the d_{xz/yz} -> d_{x^2-y^2} excitation. A peak at ~0.8 eV is also observed, and attributed to a dd excitation in the chain layer.

Linking Dynamic and Thermodynamic Properties of Cuprates; an ARPES study of (CaLa)(BaLa)$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$

We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on two families of high temperature superconductors (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$ La $% _{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ with $x=0.1$ ($T_{c}^{max}=56$ K) and $x=0.4$ ($% T_{c}^{max}=82$ K). The Fermi surface (FS) is found to be independent of $x$ or $y$, and its size indicates extreme sample-surface overdoping. This universal FS allowes the comparison of dynamical properties between superconductors of similar structure and identical doping, but different $% T_{c}^{max}$. We find that the high-energy ($\left\vert E\right\vert >50$% meV) nodal velocity in the $x=0.4$ family is higher than in the $x=0.1$ family. The implied correlation between $T_{c}^{max}$ and the hopping rate $% t $ supports the notion of kinetic energy driven superconductivity in the cuprates. We also find that the antinodal gap is higher for the $x=0.4$ family.

Relation between cuprate superconductivity and magnetism: A Raman study of (CaLa)(BaLa)$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$

We present an investigation of charge-compensated antiferromagnetic (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ single crystals using Raman scattering as well as muon spin rotation. In this system the parameter $x$ controls the Cu-O-Cu superexchange interaction via bond distances and buckling angles. The oxygen content $y$ controls the charge doping. In the absence of doping the two-magnon peak position is directly proportional to the superexchange strength $J$. We find that both $x$ and $y$ affect the peak position considerably. The Néel temperature determined from muon spin rotation on the same samples independently confirms the strong dependence of the magnetic interaction on $x$ and $y$. We find a considerable increase in the maximum superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}^{max}$ with $J$. This is strong evidence of the importance of orbital overlap to superconductivity in this family of cuprates.

Spin-charge interplay in antiferromagnetic La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ studied by the muons, neutrons, and ARPES techniques

Exploring whether a spin density wave (SDW) is responsible for the charge excitations gap in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates is difficult, since the region of the phase diagram where the magnetic properties are clearly exposed is different from the region where the band dispersion is visible. On the one hand, long range magnetic order disappears as doping approaches 2% from below, hindering our ability to perform elastic neutron scattering (ENS). On the other hand, cuprates become insulating at low temperature when the doping approaches 2% from above, thus restricting angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In fact, ARPES data for samples with doping lower than 3% are rare and missing the quasiparticle peaks in the energy distribution curves (EDCs). The main problem is the high resistivity of extremely underdoped samples, which is detrimental to ARPES due to charging effects. Nevertheless, the resistivity of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ as a function of temperature, at 2% doping, has a broad minimum around 100K. This minimum opens a window for both experiments. By preparing a series of LSCO single crystals with $\sim $0.2-0.3% doping steps around 2%, we managed to find one to which both techniques apply. This allows us to explore the cross talk between the magnetic and electronic properties of the material.

New Perspectives for Cuprate Research: CLBLCO Single Crystals

We report the successful growth of a large (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (CLBLCO) single crystal. In this material, $x$ controls the maximum of Tc ($T_{c}^{\max}$), with minimal structural changes. Therefore, it allows a search for correlations between material properties and $T_{c}^{\max}$. We demonstrate that the crystals are good enough for neutron scattering and cleave well enough for Raman scattering. These results open new possibilities for cuprate research.

Parallel and Perpendicular Susceptibility Above $T_{c}$ in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ Single Crystals

We report direction-dependent susceptibility and resistivity measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals. These crystals have rectangular needle-like shapes with the crystallographic "c" direction parallel or perpendicular to the needle axis, which, in turn, is in the applied field direction. At optimal doping we find finite diamagnetic susceptibility above $T_{c}$, namely fluctuating superconductivity (FSC), only when the field is perpendicular to the planes. In underdoped samples we could find FSC in both field directions. We provide a phase diagram showing the FSC region, although it is sample dependent in the underdoped cases. The variations in the susceptibility data suggest a different origin for the FSC between underdoping (below 10%) and optimal doping. Finally, our data indicates that the spontaneous vortex diffusion constant above $T_c$ is anomalously high.
