Local Hölder and maximal regularity of solutions of elliptic equations with superquadratic gradient terms

We study the local Hölder regularity of strong solutions $u$ of second-order uniformly elliptic equations having a gradient term with superquadratic growth $γ> 2$, and right-hand side in a Lebesgue space $L^q$. When $q > N\frac{γ-1}γ$ ($N$ is the dimension of the Euclidean space), we obtain the optimal Hölder continuity exponent $α_q > \frac{γ-2}{γ-1}$. This allows us to prove some new results of maximal regularity type, which consist in estimating the Hessian matrix of $u$ in $L^q$. Our methods are based on blow-up techniques and a Liouville theorem.

Local minimizers in absence of ground states for the critical NLS energy on metric graphs

We consider the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on non-compact metric graphs. A quite complete description of the structure of the ground states, which correspond to global minimizers of the energy functional under a mass constraint, is provided by Adami, Serra and Tilli in arXiv:1605.07666, where it is proved that existence and properties of ground states depend in a crucial way on both the value of the mass, and the topological properties of the underlying graph. In this paper we address cases when ground states do not exist and show that, under suitable assumptions, constrained local minimizers of the energy do exist. This result paves the way to the existence of stable solutions in the time-dependent equation in cases where the ground state energy level is not achieved.

Normalized solutions of mass supercritical Schrödinger equations with potential

This paper is concerned with the existence of normalized solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ -Δu+V(x)u+λu = |u|^{p-2}u \qquad\text{in $\mathbb{R}^N$} \] in the mass supercritical and Sobolev subcritical case $2+\frac{4}{N}<p<2^*$. We prove the existence of a solution $(u,λ)\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ with prescribed $L^2$-norm $\|u\|_2=ρ$ under various conditions on the potential $V:\mathbb{R}^N\to\mathbb{R}$, positive and vanishing at infinity, including potentials with singularities. The proof is based on a new min-max argument.

Regularized variational principles for the perturbed Kepler problem

The goal of the paper is to develop a method that will combine the use of variational techniques with regularization methods in order to study existence and multiplicity results for the periodic and the Dirichlet problem associated to the perturbed Kepler system \[ \ddot x = -\frac{x}{|x|^3} + p(t), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d\geq 1$, and $p:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}^d$ is smooth and $T$-periodic, $T>0$. The existence of critical points for the action functional associated to the problem is proved via a non-local change of variables inspired by Levi-Civita and Kustaanheimo-Stiefel techniques. As an application we will prove that the perturbed Kepler problem has infinitely many generalized $T$-periodic solutions for $d=2$ and $d=3$, without any symmetry assumptions on $p$.

Normalized bound states for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in bounded domains

Given $ρ>0$, we study the elliptic problem \[ \text{find } (U,λ)\in H^1_0(Ω)\times \mathbb{R} \text{ such that } \begin{cases} -ΔU+λU=|U|^{p-1}U \int_Ω U^2\, dx=ρ, \end{cases} \] where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a bounded domain and $p>1$ is Sobolev-subcritical, searching for conditions (about $ρ$, $N$ and $p$) for the existence of solutions. By the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality it follows that, when $p$ is $L^2$-subcritical, i.e. $1<p\leq1+4/N$, the problem admits solution for every $ρ>0$. In the $L^2$-critical and supercritical case, i.e. when $1+4/N \leq p < 2^*-1$, we show that, for any $k\in\mathbb{N}$, the problem admits solutions having Morse index bounded above by $k$ only if $ρ$ is sufficiently small. Next we provide existence results for certain ranges of $ρ$, which can be estimated in terms of the Dirichlet eigenvalues of $-Δ$ in $H^1_0(Ω)$, extending to general domains and to changing sign solutions some results obtained in [Noris, Tavares, Verzini, Analysis & PDE, 2014] for positive solutions in the ball.

Bifurcation and segregation in quadratic two-populations Mean Field Games systems

We search for non-constant normalized solutions to the semilinear elliptic system \[ \begin{cases} - νΔv_i + g_i(v_j^2) v_i = λ_i v_i,\quad v_i>0 & \text{in $Ω$} \\ \partial_n v_i = 0 & \text{on $\partial Ω$}\\ \int_Ωv_i^2\,dx = 1, & 1\leq i,j\leq 2, \quad j\neq i, \end{cases} \] where $ν>0$, $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is smooth and bounded, the functions $g_i$ are positive and increasing, and both the functions $v_i$ and the parameters $λ_i$ are unknown. This system is obtained, via the Hopf-Cole transformation, from a two-populations ergodic Mean Field Games system, which describes Nash equilibria in differential games with identical players. In these models, each population consists of a very large number of indistinguishable rational agents, aiming at minimizing some long-time average criterion. Firstly, we discuss existence of nontrivial solutions, using variational methods when $g_i(s)=s$, and bifurcation ones in the general case; secondly, for selected families of nontrivial solutions, we address the appearing of segregation in the vanishing viscosity limit, i.e. \[ \int_Ω v_1 v_2 \to 0 \qquad \text{as }ν\to0. \]

Positive solutions with a complex behavior for superlinear indefinite ODEs on the real line

We show the existence of infinitely many positive solutions, defined on the real line, for the nonlinear scalar ODE \[ \ddot u + (a^+(t) - μa^-(t)) u^3 = 0, \] where $a$ is a periodic, sign-changing function, and the parameter $μ>0$ is large. Such solutions are characterized by the fact of being either small or large in each interval of positivity of $a$. In this way, we find periodic solutions, having minimal period arbitrarily large, and bounded non-periodic solutions, exhibiting a complex behavior. The proof is variational, exploiting suitable natural constraints of Nehari type.

Stable solitary waves with prescribed $L^2$-mass for the cubic Schrödinger system with trapping potentials

For the cubic Schrödinger system with trapping potentials in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\leq3$, or in bounded domains, we investigate the existence and the orbital stability of standing waves having components with prescribed $L^2$-mass. We provide a variational characterization of such solutions, which gives information on the stability through of a condition of Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss type. As an application, we show existence of conditionally orbitally stable solitary waves when: a) the masses are small, for almost every scattering lengths, and b) in the defocusing, weakly interacting case, for any masses.

Bounded solutions for a forced bounded oscillator without friction

Under the validity of a Landesman-Lazer type condition, we prove the existence of solutions bounded on the real line, together with their first derivatives, for some second order nonlinear differential equation of the form $\ddot u + g(u) = p(t)$, where the reaction term $g$ is bounded. The proof is variational, and relies on a dual version of the Nehari method for the existence of oscillating solutions to superlinear equations.

Existence and orbital stability of the ground states with prescribed mass for the L^2-critical and supercritical NLS on bounded domains

We study solutions of a semilinear elliptic equation with prescribed mass and Dirichlet homogeneous boundary conditions in the unitary ball. Such problem arises in the search of solitary wave solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) with Sobolev subcritical power nonlinearity on bounded domains. Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the existence of such solutions. Moreover, we show that standing waves associated to least energy solutions are always orbitally stable when the nonlinearity is L^2-critical and subcritical, while they are almost always stable in the L^2-supercritical regime. The proofs are obtained in connection with the study of a variational problem with two constraints, of independent interest: to maximize the L^{p+1}-norm among functions having prescribed L^2 and H^1_0-norm.

Strong competition versus fractional diffusion: the case of Lotka-Volterra interaction

We consider a system of differential equations with nonlinear Steklov boundary conditions, related to the fractional problem $$(-Δ)^s u_i = f_i(x,u_i) - βu_i^p \sum_{j\neq i} a_{ij} u_j^p,$$ where $i = i,\dots, k$, $s\in(0,1)$, $p>0$, $a_{ij}>0$ and $β>0$. When $k=2$ we develop a quasi-optimal regularity theory in $C^{0,α}$, uniformly w.r.t. $β$, for every $α< α_{\mathrm opt}=min(1,2s)$; moreover we show that the traces of the limiting profiles as $β\to+\infty$ are Lipschitz continuous and segregated. Such results are extended to the case of $k\geq3$ densities, with some restrictions on $s$, $p$ and $a_{ij}$.

Uniform Hölder regularity with small exponent in competition-fractional diffusion systems

For a class of competition-diffusion nonlinear systems involving fractional powers of the Laplacian, including as a special case the fractional Gross-Pitaevskii system, we prove that uniform boundedness implies Hölder boundedness for sufficiently small positive exponents, uniformly as the interspecific competition parameter diverges. This implies strong convergence of the family of solutions as the segregation of their support occurs.

Fractional diffusion with Neumann boundary conditions: the logistic equation

Motivated by experimental studies on the anomalous diffusion of biological populations, we introduce a nonlocal differential operator which can be interpreted as the spectral square root of the Laplacian in bounded domains with Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions. Moreover, we study related linear and nonlinear problems exploiting a local realization of such operator as performed in [X. Cabre' and J. Tan. Positive solutions of nonlinear problems involving the square root of the Laplacian. Adv. Math. 2010] for Dirichlet homogeneous data. In particular we tackle a class of nonautonomous nonlinearities of logistic type, proving some existence and uniqueness results for positive solutions by means of variational methods and bifurcation theory.

Uniform Holder bounds for strongly competing systems involving the square root of the laplacian

For a class of competition-diffusion nonlinear systems involving the square root of the Laplacian, including the fractional Gross-Pitaevskii system, we prove that uniform boundedness implies Holder boundedness for every exponent less than 1/2, uniformly as the interspecific competition parameter diverges. Moreover we prove that the limiting profile is Holder continuous of exponent 1/2. This system arises, for instance, in the relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation theory for mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates in different hyperfine states.

A remark on natural constraints in variational methods and an application to superlinear Schrödinger systems

For a regular functional J defined on a Hilbert space X, we consider the set N of points x of X such that the projection of the gradient of J at x onto a closed linear subspace V(x) of X vanishes. We study sufficient conditions for a constrained critical point of J restricted to N to be a free critical point of J, providing a unified approach to different natural constraints known in the literature, such as the Birkhoff-Hestenes natural isoperimetric conditions and the Nehari manifold. As an application, we prove multiplicity of solutions to a class of superlinear Schrödinger systems on singularly perturbed domains.

Entire minimal parabolic trajectories: the planar anisotropic Kepler problem

We continue the variational approach to parabolic trajectories introduced in our previous paper [5], which sees parabolic orbits as minimal phase transitions. We deepen and complete the analysis in the planar case for homogeneous singular potentials. We characterize all parabolic orbits connecting two minimal central configurations as free-time Morse minimizers (in a given homotopy class of paths). These may occur for at most one value of the homogeneity exponent. In addition, we link this threshold of existence of parabolic trajectories with the absence of collisions for all the minimizers of fixed-ends problems. Also the existence of action minimizing periodic trajectories with nontrivial homotopy type can be related with the same threshold.

Entire Parabolic Trajectories as Minimal Phase Transitions

For the class of anisotropic Kepler problems in $\RR^d\setminus\{0\}$ with homogeneous potentials, we seek parabolic trajectories having prescribed asymptotic directions at infinity and which, in addition, are Morse minimizing geodesics for the Jacobi metric. Such trajectories correspond to saddle heteroclinics on the collision manifold, are structurally unstable and appear only for a codimension-one submanifold of such potentials. We give them a variational characterization in terms of the behavior of the parameter-free minimizers of an associated obstacle problem. We then give a full characterization of such a codimension-one manifold of potentials and we show how to parameterize it with respect to the degree of homogeneity.

Existence and nonexistence of entire solutions for non-cooperative cubic elliptic systems

In this paper we deal with the cubic Schrödinger system $ -Δu_i = \sum_{j=1}^n β_{ij}u_j^2 u_i$, $u_1,\dots,u_n \geq 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N (N\leq 3)$, where $β=(β_{i,j})_{ij}$ is a symmetric matrix with real coefficients and $β_{ii}\geq 0$ for every $i=1,\ldots,n$. We analyse the existence and nonexistence of nontrivial solutions in connection with the properties of the matrix $β$, and provide a complete characterization in dimensions $N=1,2$. Extensions to more general power-type nonlinearities are given.
