Sentinel2Cap: A Human-Annotated Benchmark Dataset for Multimodal Remote Sensing Image Captioning

Image captioning has become an important task in computer vision, enabling models to generate natural language descriptions of visual content. While several datasets exist for natural images and high-resolution optical remote sensing imagery, the availability of captioning datasets for multimodal satellite data remains limited, particularly for SAR imagery and medium-resolution sensors. We introduce Sentinel2Cap, a human-annotated multimodal captioning dataset containing Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 multi-spectral image patches at 10 m and 20 m spatial resolution with diverse land cover compositions. Captions are created manually and carefully validated to ensure both semantic accuracy and linguistic quality. To evaluate Sentinel2Cap, we perform a zero-shot captioning using the Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct model across three image modalities: RGB, multi-spectral, and SAR pseudo-RGB representations. Results show that RGB images achieve the highest captioning performance, while SAR images remain more challenging for vision-language models. Providing modality-specific contextual prompts consistently improves performance across all metrics. These findings highlight both the challenges of multimodal remote sensing image captioning and the potential value of human-annotated datasets for advancing research in cross-modal scene understanding. European Extremely Large Telescope Site Characterization II: High angular resolution parameters

This is the second article of a series devoted to European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) site characterization. In this article we present the main properties of the parameters involved in high angular resolution observations from the data collected in the site testing campaign of the E-ELT during the Design Study (DS) phase. Observations were made in 2008 and 2009, in the four sites selected to shelter the future E-ELT (characterized under the ELT-DS contract): Aklim mountain in Morocco, Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM) in Spain, Macón range in Argentina, and Cerro Ventarrones in Chile. The same techniques, instruments and acquisition procedures were taken on each site. A Multiple Aperture Scintillation Sensor (MASS) and a Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) were installed at each site. Global statistics of the integrated seeing, the free atmosphere seeing, the boundary layer seeing and the isoplanatic angle were studied for each site, and the results are presented here. In order to estimate other important parameters such as the coherence time of the wavefront and the overall parameter "coherence étendue" additional information of vertical profiles of the wind speed was needed. Data were retrieved from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) archive. Ground wind speed was measured by Automatic Weather Stations (AWS). More aspects of the turbulence parameters such as their seasonal trend, their nightly evolution and their temporal stability were also obtained and analyzed.

The astroclimatological comparison of the Paranal Observatory and El Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory

The new extremely large telescope projects need accurate evaluation of the candidate sites. In this paper we present the astroclimatological comparison between the Paranal Observatory, located on the coast of the Atacama Desert (Chile), and the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos (ORM), located in La Palma (Canary Islands). We apply a statistical analysis using long term databases from Paranal and Carlsberg Meridian Telescope (CAMC) weather stations. Significant differences between the two analyzed sites have been found.
