Infinitesimal variation functions for families of smooth varieties

In this paper we introduce some {\it variation functions} associated to the rank of the Infinitesimal Variations of Hodge Structure for a family of smooth projective complex curves. We give some bounds and inequalities and, in particular, we prove that if $X$ is a smooth plane curve $X$, then there exists a first order deformation $ξ\in H^1(T_X)$ which deforms $X$ as plane curve, such that $ξ\cdot:H^0(ω_X)\to H^1(\mathcal{O}_{X})$ is an isomorphism. We also generalize the notions of variation functions to the higher dimensional case and we analyze the link between IVHS and the Weak and Strong Lefschetz properties of the Jacobian ring of a smooth hypersurface.

Alternating Catalan numbers and curves with triple ramification

It is known that the monodromy group of each cover of a general curve of genus g>3 equals either the symmetric or the alternating group. The classical Catalan numbers count the minimal degree covers (with symmetric monodromy) of a general curve of even genus. We solve the analogous problem for the alternating group and we determine the number of alternating covers of minimal degree 2g+1 of a general curve of genus g.

Fujita decomposition and Hodge loci

This paper contains two results on Hodge loci in the moduli space of curves. The first concerns fibrations over curves with a non-trivial flat part in the Fujita decomposition. If local Torelli theorem holds for the fibres and the fibration is non-trivial, an appropriate exterior power of the cohomology of the fiber admits a Hodge substructure. In the case of curves it follows that the moduli image of the fibers is contained in a proper Hodge locus. The second result deals with divisors in the moduli space of curves. It is proved that the image of a divisor in the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties is not contained in a proper totally geodesic subvariety. It follows that a Hodge locus in the moduli space of curves has codimension at least 2.

Hurwitz spaces and liftings to the Valentiner group

We study the components of the Hurwitz scheme of ramified coverings of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with monodromy given by the alternating group $A_6$ and elements in the conjugacy class of product of two disjoint cycles. In order to detect the connected components of the Hurwitz scheme, inspired by the case of the spin structures studied by Fried for the $3$-cycles, we use as invariant the lifting to the Valentiner group, triple covering of $A_6$. We prove that the Hurwitz scheme has two irreducible components when the genus of the covering is greater than zero, in accordance with the asymptotic solution found by Bogomolov and Kulikov.

Some results on deformations of sections of vector bundles

Let $E$ be a vector bundle on a smooth complex projective variety $X$. We study the family of sections $s_t\in H^0(E\otimes L_t)$ where $L_t\in Pic^0(X)$ is a family of topologically trivial line bundle and $L_0=\mathcal O_X,$ that is, we study deformations of $s=s_0$. By applying the approximation theorem of Artin [2] we give a transversality condition that generalizes the semi-regularity of an effective Cartier divisor. Moreover, we obtain another proof of the Severi-Kodaira-Spencer theorem [4]. We apply our results to give a lower bound to the continuous rank of a vector bundle as defined by Miguel Barja [3] and a proof of a piece of the generic vanishing theorems [6] and [7] for the canonical bundle. We extend also to higher dimension a result given in [8] on the base locus of the paracanonical base locus for surfaces.

About the semiample cone of the symmetric product of a curve

Let $C$ be a smooth curve which is complete intersection of a quadric and a degree $k>2$ surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ and let $C^{(2)}$ be its second symmetric power. In this paper we study the finite generation of the extended canonical ring $R(Δ,K) := \bigoplus_{(a,b)\in\mathbb{Z}^2}H^0(C^{(2)},aΔ+bK)$, where $Δ$ is the image of the diagonal and $K$ is the canonical divisor. We first show that $R(Δ,K)$ is finitely generated if and only if the difference of the two $g_k^1$ on $C$ is torsion non-trivial and then show that this holds on an analytically dense locus of the moduli space of such curves.

Connectedness Bertini Theorem via numerical equivalence

Let $X$ be an irreducible projective variety and $f$ a morphism $X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$. We give a new proof of the fact that the preimage of any linear variety of dimension $k\ge n+1-\dim f(X)$ is connected. We prove that the statement is a consequence of the Generalized Hodge Index Theorem using easy numerical arguments that hold in any characteristic. We also prove the connectedness Theorem of Fulton and Hansen as application of our main theorem.

Dihedral Monodromy and Xiao Fibrations

We construct three new families of fibrations $π: S \to B$ where $S$ is an algebraic complex surface and $B$ a curve that violate Xiao's conjecture relating the relative irregularity and the genus of the general fiber. The fibers of $π$ are certain étale cyclic covers of hyperelliptic curves that give coverings of $P^1$ with dihedral monodromy. As an application, we also show the existence of big and nef effective divisors in the Brill-Noether range.

On rational maps from the product of two general curves

This paper treats the dominant rational maps from the product of two very general curves to nonsingular projective surfaces. Combining the result by Bastianelli and Pirola, we prove that the product of two very general curves of genus $g\geq 7$ and $g'\geq 3$ does not admit dominant rational maps of degree $> 1$ if the image surface is non-ruled. We also treat the case of the 2-symmetric product of a curve.

On subfields of the function field of a general surface in ${\mathbb P}^3$

In this paper we study birational immersions from a very general smooth plane curve to a non-rational surface with $p_g=q=0$ to treat dominant rational maps from a very general surface $X$ of degree$\geq 5$ in ${\mathbb P}^3$ to smooth projective surfaces $Y$. Based on the classification theory of algebraic surfaces, Hodge theory, and deformation theory, we prove that there is no dominant rational map from $X$ to $Y$ unless $Y$ is rational or $Y$ is birational to $X$.

Subcanonical points on projective curves and triply periodic minimal surfaces in the Euclidean space

A point $p$ on a smooth complex projective curve $C$ of genus $g>3$ is subcanonical if the divisor $(2g-2)p$ is canonical. In the moduli space of pointed curves, the subcanonical locus is described by pairs $(C,p)$ as above, and it consists of three irreducible components of dimension $2g-1$. Apart from the hyperelliptic component $\mathcal{G}_g^{hyp}$, the other components $\mathcal{G}_g^{odd}$ and $\mathcal{G}_g^{even}$ depend on the parity of $h^0(C,(g-1)p)$, and their general points satisfy $h^0(C,(g-1)p)=1$ and $2$, respectively. In this paper, we study the subloci of pairs $(C,p)$ such that $h^0(C,(g-1)p)$ is at least $r+1$ and it has the same parity as $r+1$. In particular, we provide a lower bound on their dimension, and we prove its sharpness for $r<4$. As an application, we further give an existence result for triply periodic minimal surfaces immersed in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space, completing a previous result of the second author.

Brill-Noether loci for divisors on irregular varieties

For a projective variety X, a line bundle L on X and r a natural number we consider the r-th Brill-Noether locus W^r(L,X):={η\in Pic^0(X)|h^0(L+η)\geq r+1}: we describe its natural scheme structure and compute the Zariski tangent space. If X is a smooth surface of maximal Albanese dimension and C is a curve on X, we define a Brill-Noether number ρ(C, r) and we prove, under some mild additional assumptions, that if ρ(C, r) is non negative then W^r(C,X) is nonempty of dimension bigger or equal to ρ(C,r). As an application, we derive lower bounds for h^0(K_D) for a divisor D that moves linearly on a smooth projective variety X of maximal Albanese dimension and inequalities for the numerical invariants of curves that do not move linearly on a surface of maximal Albanese dimension.

Continuous families of divisors, paracanonical systems and a new inequality for varieties of maximal Albanese dimension

Given a smooth complex projective variety X, a line bundle L of X an element v of H^1(O_X) and a section s in H^0(L) that deforms to first order in the direction v, we give a sufficient condition on v in terms of Koszul cohomology for this first order deformation to extend to an analytic deformation. We apply this result to improve known results on the paracanonical system of a variety of maximal Albanese dimension, due to Beauville in the case of surfaces and to Lazarsfeld-Popa in higher dimension. In particular, we prove the inequality p_g(X)>=χ(K_X)+q(X)-1 for a variety X of maximal Albanese dimension without irregular fibrations of Albanese general type.

Parametrization of rational maps on a variety of general type, and the finiteness theorem

In a previous paper, we provided some update in the treatment of the finiteness theorem for rational maps of finite degree from a fixed variety to varieties of general type. In the present paper we present another improvement, introducing the natural parametrization of maps by means of the space of linear projections in a suitable projective space, and this leads to some new insight in the geometry of the finiteness theorem.

On the canonical map of surfaces with q>=6

We carry out an analysis of the canonical system of a minimal complex surface of general type with irregularity q>0. Using this analysis we are able to sharpen in the case q>0 the well known Castelnuovo inequality K^2>=3p_g+q-7. Then we turn to the study of surfaces with p_g=2q-3 and no fibration onto a curve of genus >1. We prove that for q>=6 the canonical map is birational. Combining this result with the analysis of the canonical system, we also prove the inequality: K^2>=7χ+2. This improves an earlier result of the first and second author [M.Mendes Lopes and R.Pardini, On surfaces with p_g=2q-3, Adv. in Geom. 10 (3) (2010), 549-555].

A characterization of the symmetric square of a curve

In this paper a new intrinsic geometric characterization of the symmetric square of a curve and of the ordinary product of two curves is given. More precisely it is shown that the existence on a surface of general type S of irregularity q of an effective divisor D having self-intersection D^2>0 and arithmetic genus q implies that S is either birational to a product of curves or to the second symmetric product of a curve.

A New Curve Algebraically but not Rationally Uniformized by Radicals

We give a new example of a curve C algebraically, but not rationally, uniformized by radicals. This means that C has no map onto the projective line P^1 with solvable Galois group, while there exists a curve C' that maps onto C and has a finite morphism to P^1 with solvable Galois group. We construct such a curve C of genus 9 in the second symmetric product of a general curve of genus 2. It is also an example of a genus 9 curve that does not satisfy condition S(4,2,9) of Abramovich and Harris.

Galois closure and Lagrangian varieties

We use Galois closures of finite rational maps between complex projective varieties to introduce a new method for producing varieties such that the holomorphic part of the cup product map has non-trivial kernel. We then apply our result to the two-dimensional case and we construct a new family of surfaces which are Lagrangian in their Albanese variety. Moreover, we analyze these surfaces computing their Chern invariants, and proving that they are not fibred over curves of genus greater than one.

On surfaces of general type with q=5

We prove that a complex surface S with irregularity q(S)=5 that has no irrational pencil of genus >1 has geometric genus p_g(S)>7. As a consequence, one is able to classify minimal surfaces S of general type with q(S)=5 and p_g(S)<8. This result is a negative answer, for q=5, to the question asked in arXiv:0811.0390 of the existence of surfaces of general type with irregularity q>3 that have no irrational pencil of genus >1 and with the lowest possible geometric genus p_g=2q-3. This gives some evidence for the conjecture that the only irregular surface with no irrational pencil of genus >1 and p_g=2q-3 is the symmetric product of a genus three curve.

A curve algebraically but not rationally uniformized by radicals

Zariski proved the general complex projective curve of genus g>6 is not rationally uniformized by radicals, that is, admits no map to the projective line whose Galois group is solvable. We give an example of a genus 7 complex projective curve Z that is not rationally uniformized by radicals, but such that there is a finite covering Z' -> Z with Z' rationally uniformized by radicals. The curve providing the example appears in a paper by Debarre and Fahlaoui where a construction is given to show the Brill Noether loci W_d(C) in the Jacobian of a curve C may contain translates of abelian subvarieties not arising from maps from C to other curves.

Monodromy of Projective Curves

The uniform position principle states that, given an irreducible nondegenerate curve C in the projective r-space $P^r$, a general (r-2)-plane L is uniform, that is, projection from L induces a rational map from C to $P^1$ whose monodromy group is the full symmetric group. In this paper we show the locus of non-uniform (r-2)-planes has codimension at least two in the Grassmannian for a curve C with arbitrary singularities. This result is optimal in $P^2$. For a smooth curve C in $P^3$ that is not a rational curve of degree three, four or six, we show any irreducible surface of non-uniform lines is a Schubert cycle of lines through a point $x$, such that projection from $x$ is not a birational map of $C$ onto its image.
