Opinion Dynamics on Graphon: the piecewise constant case

The study of network supported opinion dynamics in large groups of autonomous agents is attracting an increasing interest during the last years. In this paper, we proposed the use of the recent graphon theory to model and simulate an interacting system describing the evolution of individual opinions over an arbitrary size networks. Specifically, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the limit problem that approximates a very large networks made by homogeneous groups of agents. The significant new example is the mean field analysis deduced from the graphon limit systems in the case of piecewise constant graphon.

Generalized Rescaled Polya urn and its statistical applications

We introduce the Generalized Rescaled Polya (GRP) urn, that provides a generative model for a chi-squared test of goodness of fit for the long-term probabilities of clustered data, with independence between clusters and correlation, due to a reinforcement mechanism, inside each cluster. We apply the proposed test to a data set of Twitter posts about COVID-19 pandemic: in a few words, for a classical chi-squared test the data result strongly significant for the rejection of the null hypothesis (the daily long-run sentiment rate remains constant), but, taking into account the correlation among data, the introduced test leads to a different conclusion. Beside the statistical application, we point out that the GRP urn is a simple variant of the standard Eggenberger-Polya urn, that, with suitable choices of the parameters, shows "local" reinforcement, almost sure convergence of the empirical mean to a deterministic limit and different asymptotic behaviours of the predictive mean. Moreover, the study of this model provides the opportunity to analyze stochastic approximation dynamics, that are unusual in the related literature.

The Rescaled Polya Urn and the Wright-Fisher process with mutation

In [arXiv:1906.10951 (forthcoming on Advances in Applied Probability),arXiv:2011.05933 (published on PLOS ONE)] the authors introduce, study and apply a new variant of the Eggenberger-Polya urn, called the "Rescaled" Polya urn, which, for a suitable choice of the model parameters, is characterized by the following features: (i) a "local" reinforcement, i.e. a reinforcement mechanism mainly based on the last observations, (ii) a random persistent fluctuation of the predictive mean, and (iii) a long-term almost sure convergence of the empirical mean to a deterministic limit, together with a chi-squared goodness of fit result for the limit probabilities. In this work, motivated by some empirical evidences in [arXiv:2011.05933 (published on PLOS ONE)], we show that the multidimensional Wright-Fisher diffusion with mutation can be obtained as a suitable limit of the predictive means associated to a family of rescaled Polya urns

Interacting reinforced stochastic processes: statistical inference based on the weighted empirical means

This work deals with a system of interacting reinforced stochastic processes, where each process $X^j=(X_{n,j})_n$ is located at a vertex $j$ of a finite weighted direct graph, and it can be interpreted as the sequence of "actions" adopted by an agent $j$ of the network. The interaction among the dynamics of these processes depends on the weighted adjacency matrix $W$ associated to the underlying graph: indeed, the probability that an agent $j$ chooses a certain action depends on its personal "inclination" $Z_{n,j}$ and on the inclinations $Z_{n,h}$, with $h\neq j$, of the other agents according to the entries of $W$. The best known example of reinforced stochastic process is the Polya urn. The present paper characterizes the asymptotic behavior of the weighted empirical means $N_{n,j}=\sum_{k=1}^n q_{n,k} X_{k,j}$, proving their almost sure synchronization and some central limit theorems in the sense of stable convergence. By means of a more sophisticated decomposition of the considered processes adopted here, these findings complete and improve some asymptotic results for the personal inclinations $Z^j=(Z_{n,j})_n$ and for the empirical means $\overline{X}^j=(\sum_{k=1}^n X_{k,j}/n)_n$ given in recent papers (e.g. [arXiv:1705.02126, Bernoulli, Forth.]; [arXiv:1607.08514, Ann. Appl. Probab., 27(6):3787-3844, 2017]; [arXiv:1602.06217, Stochastic Process. Appl., 129(1):70-101, 2019]). Our work is motivated by the aim to understand how the different rates of convergence of the involved stochastic processes combine and, from an applicative point of view, by the construction of confidence intervals for the common limit inclination of the agents and of a test statistics to make inference on the matrix $W$, based on the weighted empirical means. In particular, we answer a research question posed in [arXiv:1705.02126, Bernoulli, Forth.]

Best estimation of functional linear models

Observations which are realizations from some continuous process are frequent in sciences, engineering, economics, and other fields. We consider linear models, with possible random effects, where the responses are random functions in a suitable Sobolev space. The processes cannot be observed directly. With smoothing procedures from the original data, both the response curves and their derivatives can be reconstructed, even separately. From both these samples of functions, just one sample of representatives is obtained to estimate the vector of functional parameters. A simulation study shows the benefits of this approach over the common method of using information either on curves or derivatives. The main theoretical result is a strong functional version of the Gauss-Markov theorem. This ensures that the proposed functional estimator is more efficient than the best linear unbiased estimator based only on curves or derivatives.

A randomized most powerful test to detect a cheater's action. Applicaton to identification of listeriosis in Lombardy

This article presents a new randomized non-parametric test based on a sample of independent but not identically distributed variables; this test detects if a cheater replaces one of the distributions of the sample with a convex-dominating one. The presented test is the uniformely most powerful, in the sense that it is the most powerful for any change of the cheater. We show that this test may be applied when we have variables with distribution satisfying the monotone likelihood ratio property and we need to check whether a parameter of a variable has been changed. The application we present concerns the detection of epidemics of listeriosis in Lombardy from 2005 to 2011.

Full binary trees, Narayana numbers and two-dimensional decompositions of integers

We present two models of multitype Galton-Watson trees, that we call full binary trees and full binary trees with survivals. We show relevant relations between these trees and the Narayana numbers and the two-dimensional decompositions of integers. We prove further statistical results on our models concerning the related contour processes and offspring distributions.

A canonical form for Gaussian periodic processes

This article provides a representation theorem for a set of Gaussian processes; this theorem allows to build Gaussian processes with arbitrary regularity and to write them as limit of random trigonometric series. We show via Karhunen-Love theorem that this set is isometrically equivalent to l2. We then prove that regularity of trajectory path of anyone of such processes can be detected just by looking at decrease rate of l2 sequence associated to him via isometry.

A decomposition theorem for fuzzy set-valued random variables and a characterization of fuzzy random translation

Let $X$ be a fuzzy set--valued random variable (\frv{}), and $\huku{X}$ the family of all fuzzy sets $B$ for which the Hukuhara difference $X\HukuDiff B$ exists $\mathbb{P}$--almost surely. In this paper, we prove that $X$ can be decomposed as $X(ω)=C\Mink Y(ω)$ for $\mathbb{P}$--almost every $ω\inΩ$, $C$ is the unique deterministic fuzzy set that minimizes $\mathbb{E}[d_2(X,B)^2]$ as $B$ is varying in $\huku{X}$, and $Y$ is a centered \frv{} (i.e. its generalized Steiner point is the origin). This decomposition allows us to characterize all \frv{} translation (i.e. $X(ω) = M \Mink \indicator{ξ(ω)}$ for some deterministic fuzzy convex set $M$ and some random element in $\Banach$). In particular, $X$ is an \frv{} translation if and only if the Aumann expectation $\mathbb{E}X$ is equal to $C$ up to a translation. Examples, such as the Gaussian case, are provided.

A functional equation whose unknown is P([0,1]) valued

We study a functional equation whose unknown maps a Euclidean space into the space of probability distributions on [0,1]. We prove existence and uniqueness of its solution under suitable regularity and boundary conditions, we show that it depends continuously on the boundary datum, and we characterize solutions that are diffuse on [0,1]. A canonical solution is obtained by means of a Randomly Reinforced Urn with different reinforcement distributions having equal means. The general solution to the functional equation defines a new parametric collection of distributions on [0,1] generalizing the Beta family.

A set-valued framework for birth-and-growth process

We propose a set-valued framework for the well-posedness of birth-and-growth process. Our birth-and-growth model is rigorously defined as a suitable combination, involving Minkowski sum and Aumann integral, of two very general set-valued processes representing nucleation and growth respectively. The simplicity of the used geometrical approach leads us to avoid problems arising by an analytical definition of the front growth such as boundary regularities. In this framework, growth is generally anisotropic and, according to a mesoscale point of view, it is not local, i.e. for a fixed time instant, growth is the same at each space point.

Statistical aspects of birth--and--growth stochastic processes

The paper considers a particular family of set--valued stochastic processes modeling birth--and--growth processes. The proposed setting allows us to investigate the nucleation and the growth processes. A decomposition theorem is established to characterize the nucleation and the growth. As a consequence, different consistent set--valued estimators are studied for growth process. Moreover, the nucleation process is studied via the hitting function, and a consistent estimator of the nucleation hitting function is derived.

First--order continuous models of opinion formation

We study certain nonlinear continuous models of opinion formation derived from a kinetic description involving exchange of opinion between individual agents. These models imply that the only possible final opinions are the extremal ones, and are similar to models of pure drift in magnetization. Both analytical and numerical methods allow to recover the final distribution of opinion between the two extremal ones.
