On the distance spectra of graphs

The distance matrix of a graph GG is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The distance eigenvalues of GG are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix and they form the distance spectrum of GG. We determine the distance spectra of halved cubes, double odd graphs, and Doob graphs, completing the determination of distance spectra of distance regular graphs having exactly one positive distance eigenvalue. We characterize strongly regular graphs having more positive than negative distance eigenvalues. We give examples of graphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues but lacking regularity properties. We also determine the determinant and inertia of the distance matrices of lollipop and barbell graphs.

Application of some combinatorial arrays in coloring of total graph of a commutative ring

Let RR be a commutative ring with unity and Z(R)Z(R) and Reg(R){\rm Reg}(R) be the set of zero-divisors and non-zero zero-divisors of RR, respectively. We denote by T(Γ(R))T(Γ(R)), the total graph of RR, a simple graph with the vertex set RR and two distinct vertices xx and yy are adjacent if and only if x+y∈Z(R)x+y\in Z(R). The induced subgraphs on Z(R)Z(R) and Reg(R){\rm Reg}(R) are denoted by Z(Γ(R))Z(Γ(R)) and Reg(Γ(R))Reg(Γ(R)), respectively. These graphs were first introduced by D.F. Anderson and A. Badawi in 2008. In this paper, we prove the following result: let RR be a finite ring and one of the following conditions hold: (i) The residue field of RR of minimum size has even characteristic, (ii) Every residue field of RR has odd characteristic and RJ(R)\frac{R}{J(R)} has no summand isomorphic to Z3×Z3\mathbb{Z}_3\times \mathbb{Z}_3, then the chromatic number and clique number of T(Γ(R))T(Γ(R)) are equal to max⁡{∣m∣ : m∈Max(R)}\max\{|\mathfrak{m}|\,:\, \mathfrak{m}\in {\rm Max}(R)\}. The same result holds for Z(Γ(R))Z(Γ(R)). Moreover, if the residue field of RR of minimum size has even characteristic or every residue field of RR has odd characteristic, then we determine the chromatic number and clique number of Reg(Γ(R))Reg(Γ(R)) as well.

On the Cayley graph of a commutative ring with respect to its zero-divisors

Let RR be a commutative ring with unity and R+R^{+} be Z∗(R)Z^*(R) be the additive group and the set of all non-zero zero-divisors of RR, respectively. We denote by CAY(R)\mathbb{CAY}(R) the Cayley graph Cay(R+,Z∗(R))Cay(R^+,Z^*(R)). In this paper, we study CAY(R)\mathbb{CAY}(R). Among other results, it is shown that for every zero-dimensional non-local ring RR, CAY(R)\mathbb{CAY}(R) is a connected graph of diameter 2. Moreover, for a finite ring RR, we obtain the vertex connectivity and the edge connectivity of CAY(R)\mathbb{CAY}(R). We investigate rings RR with perfect CAY(R)\mathbb{CAY}(R) as well. We also study Reg(CAY(R))Reg(\mathbb{CAY}(R)) the induced subgraph on the regular elements of RR. This graph gives a family of vertex transitive graphs. We show that if RR is a Noetherian ring and Reg(CAY(R))Reg(\mathbb{CAY}(R)) has no infinite clique, then RR is finite. Furthermore, for every finite ring RR, the clique number and the chromatic number of Reg(CAY(R))Reg(\mathbb{CAY}(R)) are determined.
