We consider quadruples of positive integers (a,b,m,n) with a≤b and m≤n such that any proper edge-coloring of the complete bipartite graph Km,n contains a rainbow Ka,b subgraph. We show that any such quadruple with a≤m and n>(a2−a+1)(b−1) satisfies this property. We also show that the quadruple (2,3,3,6) satisfies this property. We end with a conjecture.
Juggling patterns can be described by a sequence of cards which keep track of the relative order of the balls at each step. This interpretation has many algebraic and combinatorial properties, with connections to Stirling numbers, Dyck paths, Narayana numbers, boson normal ordering, arc-labeled digraphs, and more. Some of these connections are investigated with a particular focus on enumerating juggling patterns satisfying certain ordering constraints, including where the number of crossings is fixed.
The distance matrix of a graph G is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The distance eigenvalues of G are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix and they form the distance spectrum of G. We determine the distance spectra of halved cubes, double odd graphs, and Doob graphs, completing the determination of distance spectra of distance regular graphs having exactly one positive distance eigenvalue. We characterize strongly regular graphs having more positive than negative distance eigenvalues. We give examples of graphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues but lacking regularity properties. We also determine the determinant and inertia of the distance matrices of lollipop and barbell graphs.
For each b≥5 we construct a pair of cospectral b-regular graphs, where one has a perfect matching and the other one not. This solves a research problem posed by the third author at the 22nd British Combinatorial Conference.
We report on a large stellar flare from the nearby dMe flare star EV Lac observed by the Swift and Konus-Wind satellites and the Liverpool Telescope. It is the first large stellar flare from a dMe flare star to result in a Swift trigger based on its hard X-ray intensity. Its peak f_X from 0.3--100 keV of 5.3x10^-8 erg/cm2/s is nearly 7000 times larger than the star's quiescent coronal flux, and the change in magnitude in the white filter is >4.7. This flare also caused a transient increase in EV Lac's bolometric luminosity (L_bol) during the early stages of the flare, with a peak estimated L_X/L_bol ~3.1. We apply flare loop hydrodynamic modeling to the plasma parameter temporal changes to derive a loop semi-length of l/Rstar =0.37 +/-0.07. The soft X-ray spectrum of the flare reveals evidence of iron Kalpha emission at 6.4 keV. We model the Kalpha emission as fluorescence from the hot flare source irradiating the photospheric iron, and derive loop heights of h/Rstar=0.1, consistent within factors of a few with the heights inferred from hydrodynamic modeling. The Kalpha emission feature shows variability on time scales of ~200 s which is difficult to interpret using the pure fluorescence hypothesis. We examine Kalpha emission produced by collisional ionization from accelerated particles, and find parameter values for the spectrum of accelerated particles which can accommodate the increased amount of Kalpha flux and the lack of observed nonthermal emission in the 20-50 keV spectral region.
We report the results of the Swift and XMM observations of the Swift-discovered long Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 060729 (T90=115s). The afterglow of this burst was exceptionally bright in X-rays as well as at UV/Optical wavelengths showing an unusually long slow decay phase (α=0.14\plm0.02) suggesting a larger energy injection phase at early times than in other bursts. The X-ray light curve displays a break at about 60 ks after the burst. The X-ray decay slope after the break is α=1.29\plm0.03. Up to 125 days after the burst we do not detect a jet break, suggesting that the jet opening angle is larger than 28 degrees. In the first 2 minutes after the burst (rest frame) the X-ray spectrum of the burst changed dramatically from a hard X-ray spectrum to a very soft one. We find that the X-ray spectra at this early phase can all be fitted by an absorbed single power law model or alternatively by a blackbody plus power law model. The power law fits show that the X-ray spectrum becomes steeper while the absorption column density decreases. In Swift's UV/Optical telescope the afterglow was clearly detected up to 9 days after the burst in all 6 filters and even longer in some of the UV filters with the latest detection in the UVW1 31 days after the burst. A break at about 50 ks is clearly detected in all 6 UVOT filters from a shallow decay slope of about 0.3 and a steeper decay slope of 1.3. In addition to the \swift observations we also present and discuss the results from a 61 ks ToO observation by XMM. (Abriviated)
We report the results of Swift observations of the Gamma Ray Burst GRB 050603. With a V magnitude V=18.2 about 10 hours after the burst the optical afterglow was the brightest so far detected by Swift and one of the brightest optical afterglows ever seen. The Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) light curves show three fast-rise-exponential-decay spikes with T90=12s and a fluence of 7.6×10−6 ergs cm−2 in the 15-150 keV band. With an Eγ,iso=1.26×1054 ergs it was also one of the most energetic bursts of all times. The Swift spacecraft began observing of the afterglow with the narrow-field instruments about 10 hours after the detection of the burst. The burst was bright enough to be detected by the Swift UV/Optical telescope (UVOT) for almost 3 days and by the X-ray Telescope (XRT) for a week after the burst. The X-ray light curve shows a rapidly fading afterglow with a decay index α=1.76−0.07+0.15. The X-ray energy spectral index was βX=0.71\plm0.10 with the column density in agreement with the Galactic value. The spectral analysis does not show an obvious change in the X-ray spectral slope over time. The optical UVOT light curve decays with a slope of α=1.8\plm0.2. The steepness and the similarity of the optical and X-ray decay rates suggest that the afterglow was observed after the jet break. We estimate a jet opening angle of about 1-2∘
