Dynamics of one-dimensional quantum many-body systems in time-periodic linear potentials

We study a system of one-dimensional interacting quantum particles subjected to a time-periodic potential linear in space. After discussing the cases of driven one- and two-particles systems, we derive the analogous results for the many-particles case in presence of a general interaction two-body potential and the corresponding Floquet Hamiltonian. When the undriven model is integrable, the Floquet Hamitlonian is shown to be integrable too. We determine the micro-motion operator and the expression for a generic time evolved state of the system. We discuss various aspects of the dynamics of the system both at stroboscopic and intermediate times, in particular the motion of the center of mass of a generic wavepacket and its spreading over time. We also discuss the case of accelerated motion of the center of mass, obtained when the integral of the coeffcient strenght of the linear potential on a time period is non-vanishing, and we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian gets in this case an additional static linear potential. We also discuss the application of the obtained results to the Lieb-Liniger model.

Integrability and scattering of the boson field theory on a lattice

A free boson on a lattice is the simplest field theory one can think of. Its partition function can be easily computed in momentum space. However, this straightforward solution hides its integrability properties. Here, we use the methods of exactly solvable models, that are currently applied to spin systems, to a massless and massive free boson on a 2D lattice. The Boltzmann weights of the model are shown to satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation with a uniformization given by trigonometric functions in the massless case, and Jacobi elliptic functions in the massive case. We diagonalize the row-to-row transfer matrix, derive the conserved quantities, and implement the quantum inverse scattering method. Finally, we construct two factorized scattering $S$ matrix models for continuous degrees of freedom using trigonometric and elliptic functions. These results place the free boson model in 2D in the same position as the rest of the models that are exactly solvable à la Yang-Baxter, offering possible applications in quantum computation.

No-Go Theorem for Boson Condensation in Topologically Ordered Quantum Liquids

Certain phase transitions between topological quantum field theories (TQFT) are driven by the condensation of bosonic anyons. However, as bosons in a TQFT are themselves nontrivial collective excitations, there can be topological obstructions that prevent them from condensing. Here we formulate such an obstruction in the form of a no-go theorem. We use it to show that no condensation is possible in SO(3)$_k$ TQFTs with odd $k$. We further show that a layered theory obtained by tensoring SO(3)$_k$ TQFT with itself any integer number of times does not admit condensation transitions either. This includes (as the case $k=3$) the noncondensability of any number of layers of the Fibonacci TQFT.

Holographic codes

There exists a remarkable four-qutrit state that carries absolute maximal entanglement in all its partitions. Employing this state, we construct a tensor network that delivers a holographic many body state, the H-code, where the physical properties of the boundary determine those of the bulk. This H-code is made of an even superposition of states whose relative Hamming distances are exponentially large with the size of the boundary. This property makes H-codes natural states for a quantum memory. H-codes exist on tori of definite sizes and get classified in three different sectors characterized by the sum of their qutrits on cycles wrapped through the boundaries of the system. We construct a parent Hamiltonian for the H-code which is highly non local and finally we compute the topological entanglement entropy of the H-code.

The Riemann zeros as energy levels of a Dirac fermion in a potential built from the prime numbers in Rindler spacetime

We construct a Hamiltonian H whose discrete spectrum contains, in a certain limit, the Riemann zeros. H is derived from the action of a massless Dirac fermion living in a domain of Rindler spacetime, in 1+1 dimensions, that has a boundary given by the world line of a uniformly accelerated observer. The action contains a sum of delta function potentials that can be viewed as partially reflecting moving mirrors. An appropriate choice of the accelerations of the mirrors, provide primitive periodic orbits associated to the prime numbers $p$, whose periods, measured by the observer's clock, are log p. Acting on the chiral components of the fermion, H becomes the Berry-Keating Hamiltonian (x p + p x)/2, where x is identified with the Rindler spatial coordinate and p with the conjugate momentum. The delta function potentials give the matching conditions of the fermion wave functions on both sides of the mirrors. There is also a phase shift for the reflection of the fermions at the boundary where the observer sits. The eigenvalue problem is solved by transfer matrix methods in the limit where the reflection amplitudes become infinitesimally small. We find that for generic values of the phase shift the spectrum is a continuum, where the Riemann zeros are missing, as in the adelic Connes model. However, for some values of phase shift, related to the phase of the zeta function, the Riemann zeros appear as discrete eigenvalues immersed in the continuum. We generalize this result to the zeros of Dirichlet L-functions, associated to primitive characters, that are encoded in the reflection coefficients of the mirrors. Finally, we show that the Hamiltonian associated to the Riemann zeros belongs to class AIII, or chiral GUE, of Random Matrix Theory.

Fractional quantum Hall states in lattices: Local models and physical implementation

The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect is one of the most striking phenomena in condensed matter physics. It is described by a simple Laughlin wavefunction and has been thoroughly studied both theoretically and experimentally. In lattice systems, however, such an effect has not been observed, there are few simple models displaying it, and only few mechanisms leading to it are known. Here we propose a new way of constructing lattice Hamiltonians with local interactions and FQH like ground states. In particular, we obtain a spin 1/2 model with a bosonic Laughlin like ground state, displaying a variety of topological features. We also demonstrate how such a model naturally emerges out of a Fermi-Hubbard like model at half filling, in which the kinetic energy part possesses bands with nonzero Chern number, and we show how this model can be implemented in an optical lattice setup with present technology.

Quantum Computation of Prime Number Functions

We propose a quantum circuit that creates a pure state corresponding to the quantum superposition of all prime numbers less than 2^n, where n is the number of qubits of the register. This Prime state can be built using Grover's algorithm, whose oracle is a quantum implementation of the classical Miller-Rabin primality test. The Prime state is highly entangled, and its entanglement measures encode number theoretical functions such as the distribution of twin primes or the Chebyshev bias. This algorithm can be further combined with the quantum Fourier transform to yield an estimate of the prime counting function, more efficiently than any classical algorithm and with an error below the bound that allows for the verification of the Riemann hypothesis. We also propose a Twin Prime state to measure the number of twin primes and another state to test the Goldbach conjecture. Arithmetic properties of prime numbers are then, in principle, amenable to experimental verifications on quantum systems.

Laughlin spin liquid states on lattices obtained from conformal field theory

We propose a set of spin system wavefunctions that are very similar to lattice versions of the Laughlin states. The wavefunction are conformal blocks of conformal field theories, and for filling factor ν=1/2 we provide a parent Hamiltonian, which is valid for any even number of spins and is at the same time a 2D generalization of the Haldane-Shastry model. We also demonstrate that the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state is reproduced as a particular case of this model. Finally, we discuss various properties of the spin states and point out several analogies to known results for the Laughlin states.

Entanglement of excited states in critical spin chians

Renyi and von Neumann entropies quantifying the amount of entanglement in ground states of critical spin chains are known to satisfy a universal law which is given by the Conformal Field Theory (CFT) describing their scaling regime. This law can be generalized to excitations described by primary fields in CFT, as was done in reference (Alcaraz et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 201601 (2011)), of which this work is a completion. An alternative derivation is presented, together with numerical verifications of our results in different models belonging to the c=1,1/2 universality classes. Oscillations of the Renyi entropy in excited states and descendant fields are also discussed.

Entanglement of low-energy excitations in Conformal Field Theory

In a quantum critical chain, the scaling regime of the energy and momentum of the ground state and low lying excitations are described by conformal field theory (CFT). The same holds true for the von Neumann and Renyi entropies of the ground state, which display a universal logarithmic behaviour depending on the central charge. In this letter we generalize this result to those excited states of the chain that correspond to primary fields in CFT. It is shown that the n-th Renyi entropy is related to a 2n-point correlator of primary fields. We verify this statement for the critical XX and XXZ chains. This result uncovers a new link between quantum information theory and CFT.

General covariant xp models and the Riemann zeros

We study a general class of models whose classical Hamiltonians are given by H = U(x) p + V(x)/p, where x and p are the position and momentum of a particle moving in one dimension, and U and V are positive functions. This class includes the Hamiltonians H_I =x (p+1/p) and H_II=(x+ 1/x)(p+ 1/p), which have been recently discussed in connection with the non trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We show that all these models are covariant under general coordinate transformations. This remarkable property becomes explicit in the Lagrangian formulation which describes a relativistic particle moving in a 1+1 dimensional spacetime whose metric is constructed from the functions U and V. General covariance is maintained by quantization and we find that the spectra are closely related to the geometry of the associated spacetimes. In particular, the Hamiltonian H_I corresponds to a flat spacetime, whereas its spectrum approaches the Riemann zeros in average. The latter property also holds for the model H_II, whose underlying spacetime is asymptotically flat. These results suggest the existence of a Hamiltonian whose underlying spacetime encodes the prime numbers, and whose spectrum provides the Riemann zeros.

Quantum spin Hamiltonians for the SU(2)_k WZW model

We propose to use null vectors in conformal field theories to derive model Hamiltonians of quantum spin chains and corresponding ground state wave function(s). The approach is quite general, and we illustrate it by constructing a family of Hamiltonians whose ground states are the chiral correlators of the SU(2)_k WZW model for integer values of the level k. The simplest example corresponds to k=1 and is essentially a nonuniform generalization of the Haldane-Shastry model with long-range exchange couplings. At level k=2, we analyze the model for N spin 1 fields. We find that the Renyi entropy and the two-point spin correlator show, respectively, logarithmic growth and algebraic decay. Furthermore, we use the null vectors to derive a set of algebraic, linear equations relating spin correlators within each model. At level k=1, these equations allow us to compute the two-point spin correlators analytically for the finite chain uniform Haldane-Shastry model and to obtain numerical results for the nonuniform case and for higher-point spin correlators in a very simple way and without resorting to Monte Carlo techniques.

The H=xp model revisited and the Riemann zeros

Berry and Keating conjectured that the classical Hamiltonian H = xp is related to the Riemann zeros. A regularization of this model yields semiclassical energies that behave, in average, as the non trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. However, the classical trajectories are not closed, rendering the model incomplete. In this paper, we show that the Hamiltonian H = x (p + l_p^2/p) contains closed periodic orbits, and that its spectrum coincides with the average Riemann zeros. This result is generalized to Dirichlet L-functions using different self-adjoint extensions of H. We discuss the relation of our work to Polya's fake zeta function and suggest an experimental realization in terms of the Landau model.

Violation of the area law and long range correlations in infinite matrix product states

We propose to construct a family of states of one-dimensional spin chains by replacing the finite dimensional matrices in matrix product states by infinite dimensional operators constructed from bosonic annihilation and creation operators. The resulting states are demonstrated to violate the area law and to exhibit long range correlations. In addition, we propose an efficient way to prepare the states experimentally, in which the spins interact sequentially with an ancilla system.

Chiral correlators of the Ising conformal field theory

We derive explicit expressions for the conformal blocks of the Ising conformal field theory, for the correlators of an arbitrary number of primary fields. These results are obtained from the bosonized description of the Ising model. Interestingly, correlators involving Majorana fermions, can be obtained in two different ways, giving rise to identities between the `bosonic' and `fermionic' description of these correlators. These identities are generalizations of the famous Cauchy-identity. The conformal blocks of the Ising model are used to derive expression for the conformal blocks of the su(2)_2 WZW conformal field theory.

Entanglement entropy of integer Quantum Hall states in polygonal domains

The entanglement entropy of the integer Quantum Hall states satisfies the area law for smooth domains with a vanishing topological term. In this paper we consider polygonal domains for which the area law acquires a constant term that only depends on the angles of the vertices and we give a general expression for it. We study also the dependence of the entanglement spectrum on the geometry and give it a simple physical interpretation.

Exact solution of the p+ip pairing Hamiltonian and a hierarchy of integrable models

Using the well-known trigonometric six-vertex solution of the Yang-Baxter equation we derive an integrable pairing Hamiltonian with anyonic degrees of freedom. The exact algebraic Bethe ansatz solution is obtained using standard techniques. From this model we obtain several limiting models, including the pairing Hamiltonian with p+ip-wave symmetry. An in-depth study of the p+ip model is then undertaken, including a mean-field analysis, analytic and numerical solution of the Bethe ansatz equations, and an investigation of the topological properties of the ground-state wavefunction. Our main result is that the ground-state phase diagram of the p+ip model consists of three phases. There is the known boundary line with gapless excitations that occurs for vanishing chemical potential, separating the topologically trivial strong pairing phase and the topologically non-trivial weak pairing phase. We argue that a second boundary line exists separating the weak pairing phase from a topologically trivial weak coupling BCS phase, which includes the Fermi sea in the limit of zero coupling. The ground state on this second boundary line is the Moore-Read state.

Entanglement entropy of integer Quantum Hall states

We compute the entanglement entropy, in real space, of the ground state of the integer Quantum Hall states for three different domains embedded in the torus, the disk and the sphere. We establish the validity of the area law with a vanishing value of the topological entanglement entropy. The entropy per unit length of the perimeter depends on the filling fraction, but it is independent of the geometry.

Exactly solvable pairing model for superconductors with a p+ip-wave symmetry

We present the exact Bethe ansatz solution for the two-dimensional BCS pairing Hamiltonian with p_x + i p_y symmetry. Using both mean-field theory and the exact solution we obtain the ground-state phase diagram parameterized by the filling fraction and the coupling constant. It consists of three phases denoted weak coupling BCS, weak pairing, and strong pairing. The first two phases are separated by a topologically protected line where the exact ground state is given by the Moore-Read pfaffian state. In the thermodynamic limit the ground-state energy is discontinuous on this line. The other two phases are separated by the critical line, also topologically protected, previously found by Read and Green. We establish a duality relation between the weak and strong pairing phases, whereby ground states of the weak phase are "dressed" versions of the ground states of the strong phase by zero energy (Moore-Read) pairs and characterized by a topological order parameter.

Infinite matrix product states, Conformal Field Theory and the Haldane-Shastry model

We generalize the Matrix Product States method using the chiral vertex operators of Conformal Field Theory and apply it to study the ground states of the XXZ spin chain, the J1-J2 model and random Heisenberg models. We compute the overlap with the exact wave functions, spin-spin correlators and the Renyi entropy, showing that critical systems can be described by this method. For rotational invariant ansatzs we construct an inhomogenous extension of the Haldane-Shastry model with long range exchange interactions.

Analytic Formulations of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group

We present two new analytic formulations of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method. In these formulations we combine the block renormalization group (BRG) procedure with Variational and Fokker-Planck methods. The BRG method is used to reduce the lattice size while the latter are used to construct approximate target states to compute the block density matrix. We apply our DMRG methods to the Ising Model in a transverse field (ITF model) and compute several of its critical properties which are then compared with the old BRG results.

The Renormalization Group Method and Quantum Groups: the postman always rings twice

We review some of our recent results concerning the relationship between the Real-Space Renormalization Group method and Quantum Groups. We show this relation by applying real-space RG methods to study two quantum group invariant Hamiltonians, that of the XXZ model and the Ising model in a transverse field (ITF) defined in an open chain with appropriate boundary terms. The quantum group symmetry is preserved under the RG transformation except for the appearence of a quantum group anomalous term which vanishes in the classical case. This is called {\em the quantum group anomaly}. We derive the new qRG equations for the XXZ model and show that the RG-flow diagram obtained in this fashion exhibits the correct line of critical points that the exact model has. In the ITF model the qRG-flow equations coincide with the tensor product decomposition of cyclic irreps of $SU_q(2)$ with $q^4=1$.
