The STAR Event Plane Detector

The Event Plane Detector (EPD) is an upgrade detector to the STAR experiment at RHIC, designed to measure the pattern of forward-going charged particles emitted in a high-energy collision between heavy nuclei. It consists of two highly-segmented disks of 1.2-cm-thick scintillator embedded with wavelength-shifting fiber, coupled to silicon photomultipliers and custom electronics. We describe the general design of the device, its construction, and performance on the bench and in the experiment.

Developing a silica aerogel radiator for the HELIX ring-imaging Cherenkov system

This paper reports the successful fabrication of silica aerogel Cherenkov radiators produced in the first batches from a 96-tile mass production performed using pin-drying technique in our laboratory. The aerogels are to be used in a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector in the spectrometer of a planned balloon-borne cosmic-ray observation program, HELIX (High Energy Light Isotope eXperiment). A total of 36 transparent, hydrophobic aerogel tiles with a high refractive index of 1.16 and dimensions of 10 cm $\times $ 10 cm $\times $ 1 cm will be chosen as the flight radiators. Thus far, 40 out of the 48 tiles fabricated were confirmed as having no tile cracking. In the first screening, 8 out of the first 16 tiles were accepted as flight-qualified candidates, based on basic optical measurement results. To fit the aerogel tiles into a radiator support structure, the trimming of previously manufactured prototype tiles using a water-jet cutting device was successful.

Design and Fabrication of a Highly Integrated Silicon Detector for the STAR Experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory

We present the design of a detector used as a particle tracking device in the STAR experiment at the RHIC collider of Brookhaven National Laboratories. The "stave," 24 of which make up the completed detector, is a highly mechanically integrated design comprised of 6 custom silicon sensors mounted on a Kapton substrate. 4608 wire bonds connect these sensors to 36 analog front-end chips which are mounted on the same substrate. Power and signal connectivity from the hybrid to the front-end chips is provided by wire bonds. The entire circuit is mounted on a carbon fiber base co-cured to the Kapton substrate. We present the unique design challenges for this detector and some novel techniques for overcoming them.

A high dynamic range data acquisition system for a solid-state electron Electric Dipole Moment experiment

We have built a high precision (24-bit) data acquisition (DAQ) system with eight simultaneously sampling input channels for the measurement of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron. The DAQ system consists of two main components, a master board and eight individual analog-to-digital converter (ADC) boards. This custom DAQ system provides galvanic isolation, with fiber optic communication, between the master board and each ADC board to reduce the possibility of ground loop pickups. In addition, each ADC board is enclosed in its own heavy-duty radio frequency shielding enclosure and powered by DC batteries, to attain the ultimate low levels of channel cross-talk. In this paper, we describe the implementation of the DAQ system and scrutinize its performance.
