The Riemann problem for a two-phase mixture hyperbolic system with phase function and multi-component equation of state

In this paper a hyperbolic system of partial differential equations for two-phase mixture flows with $N$ components is studied. It is derived from a more complicated model involving diffusion and exchange terms. Important features of the model are the assumption of isothermal flow, the use of a phase field function to distinguish the phases and a mixture equation of state involving the phase field function as well as an affine relation between partial densities and partial pressures in the liquid phase. This complicates the analysis. A complete solution of the Riemann initial value problem is given. Some interesting examples are suggested as bench marks for numerical schemes.

Radially symmetric solutions of the ultra-relativistic Euler equations

The ultra-relativistic Euler equations for an ideal gas are described in terms of the pressure $p$, the spatial part $\underline{u} \in \R^3$ of the dimensionless four-velocity and the particle density $n$. Radially symmetric solutions of these equations are studied. Analytical solutions are presented for the linearized system. For the original nonlinear equations we design and analyze a numerical scheme for simulating radially symmetric solutions in three space dimensions. The good performance of the scheme is demonstrated by numerical examples. In particular, it was observed that the method has the capability to capture accurately the pressure singularity formation caused by shock wave reflections at the origin.

Convergence analysis of a finite volume scheme for solving non-linear aggregation-breakage population balance equations

This paper presents stability and convergence analysis of a finite volume scheme (FVS) for solving aggregation, breakage and the combined processes by showing Lipschitz continuity of the numerical fluxes. It is shown that the FVS is second order convergent independently of the meshes for pure breakage problem while for pure aggregation and coupled equations, it shows second order convergent on uniform and non-uniform smooth meshes. Furthermore, it gives only first order convergence on non-uniform grids. The mathematical results of convergence analysis are also demonstrated numerically for several test problems.

Regular Solutions to the Coagulation Equations with Singular Kernels

In this article we prove the existence of solutions to the coagulation equation with singular kernels. We use weighted L^1-spaces to deal with the singularities in order to obtain regular solutions. The Smoluchowski kernel is covered by our proof. The weak L^1 compactness methods are applied to suitably chosen approximating equations as a base of our proof. A more restrictive uniqueness result is also mentioned.

The singular kernel coagulation equation with multifragmentation

In this article we prove the existence of solutions to the singular coagulation equation with multifragmentation. We use weighted $L^1$-spaces to deal with the singularities and to obtain regular solutions. The Smoluchowski kernel is covered by our proof. The weak $L^1$ compactness methods are applied to suitably chosen approximating equations as a base of our proof. A more restrictive uniqueness result is also given.

Weak solutions to the continuous coagulation equation with multiple fragmentation

The existence of weak solutions to the continuous coagulation equation with multiple fragmentation is shown for a class of unbounded coagulation and fragmentation kernels, the fragmentation kernel having possibly a singularity at the origin. This result extends previous ones where either boundedness of the coagulation kernel or no singularity at the origin for the fragmentation kernel were assumed.
