Global existence to the discrete Safronov-Dubovskiǐ coagulation equations and failure of mass-conservation

This paper presents the existence of global solutions to the discrete Safronov-Dubvoskiǐ coagulation equations for a large class of coagulation kernels satisfying $Λ_{i,j} = θ_i θ_j + κ_{i,j}$ with $κ_{i,j} \leq Aθ_i θ_j, \ \ \forall \ \ i,j\ge 1$ where the sequence $(θ_i)_{i\geq 1}$ grows linearly or superlinearly with respect to $i$. Moreover, the failure of mass-conservation of the solution is also addressed which confirms the occurrence of the gelation phenomenon.

Instantaneous gelation and nonexistence for the Oort-Hulst-Safronov coagulation model

The possible occurrence of instantaneous gelation to Oort-Hulst-Safronov (OHS) coagulation equation is investigated for a certain class of unbounded coagulation kernels. The existence of instantaneous gelation is confirmed by showing the nonexistence of mass-conserving weak solutions. Finally, it is shown that for such kernels, there is no weak solution to the OHS coagulation equation at any time interval.

On Classical solution to the Discrete Coagulation Equations with Collisional Breakage

In this article, the existence of global classical solutions to the discrete coagulation equations with collisional breakage is established for collisional kernel having linear growth whereas the uniqueness is shown under additional restrictions on collisional kernel. Moreover, mass conservation property and propagation of moments of solutions are also discussed.

A novel two-point gradient method for Regularization of inverse problems in Banach spaces

In this paper, we introduce a novel two-point gradient method for solving the ill-posed problems in Banach spaces and study its convergence analysis. The method is based on the well known iteratively regularized Landweber iteration method together with an extrapolation strategy. The general formulation of iteratively regularized Landweber iteration method in Banach spaces excludes the use of certain functions such as total variation like penalty functionals, $L^1$ functions etc. The novel scheme presented in this paper allows to use such non-smooth penalty terms that can be helpful in practical applications involving the reconstruction of several important features of solutions such as piecewise constancy and sparsity. We carefully discuss the choices for important parameters, such as combination parameters and step sizes involved in the design of the method. Additionally, we discuss an example to validate our assumptions.

Mass-conserving weak solutions to Oort-Hulst-Safronov coagulation equation with singular rates

Existence of global weak solutions to the continuous Oort-Hulst-Safronov (OHS) coagulation equation is investigated for coagulation kernels capturing a singularity near zero and growing linearly at infinity. The proof mainly relies on a relation, between classical Smoluchowski coagulation equation (SCE) and OHS coagulation equation, which is introduced in [16] as generalized coagulation equation. Moreover, all weak solutions formulated in a suitable sense are demonstrated to be mass-conserving. We obtain here a similar result for OHS coagulation equation as the one in [6] for SCE.

Convergence analysis of sectional methods for solving aggregation population balance equations: The fixed pivot technique

In this paper, we introduce the convergence analysis of the fixed pivot technique given by S.Kumar and Ramkrishna \cite{Kumar:1996-1} for the nonlinear aggregation population balance equations which are of substantial interest in many areas of science: colloid chemistry, aerosol physics, astrophysics, polymer science, oil recovery dynamics, and mathematical biology. In particular, we investigate the convergence for five different types of uniform and non-uniform meshes which turns out that the fixed pivot technique is second order convergent on a uniform and non-uniform smooth meshes. Moreover, it yields first order convergence on a locally uniform mesh. Finally, the analysis exhibits that the method does not converge on an oscillatory and non-uniform random meshes. Mathematical results of the convergence analysis are also demonstrated numerically.

On the uniqueness for coagulation and multiple fragmentation equation

In this article, the uniqueness of weak solutions to the continuous coagulation and multiple fragmentation equation is proved for a large range of unbounded coagulation and multiple fragmentation kernels. The multiple fragmentation kernels may have a singularity at origin. This work generalizes the preceding ones, by including some physically relevant coagulation and fragmentation kernels which were not considered before.

Convergence of the cell average technique for Smoluchowski coagulation equation

We present the convergence analysis of the cell average technique, introduced in [12], to solve the nonlinear continuous Smoluchowski coagulation equation. It is shown that the technique is second order accurate on uniform grids and first order accurate on non-uniform smooth (geometric) grids. As an essential ingredient, the consistency of the technique is thoroughly discussed.

Weak solutions to the continuous coagulation equation with multiple fragmentation

The existence of weak solutions to the continuous coagulation equation with multiple fragmentation is shown for a class of unbounded coagulation and fragmentation kernels, the fragmentation kernel having possibly a singularity at the origin. This result extends previous ones where either boundedness of the coagulation kernel or no singularity at the origin for the fragmentation kernel were assumed.
