Platform for controllable Majorana zero modes using superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures

We propose a novel platform for the creation and manipulation of Majorana zero modes consisting of a ferromagnetic metallic wire placed between conventional superconductors which are in proximity to ferromagnetic insulators. Our device relies on the interplay of applied supercurrents and exchange fields emerging from the ferromagnetic insulators. We assert that the proposed superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures exhibit enhanced controllability, since topological superconductivity can be tuned apart from gate voltages applied on the ferromagnetic wire, also by manipulating the applied supercurrents and/or the magnetisation of the ferromagnetic insulators.

Charge Density Waves beyond the Pauli paramagnetic limit in 2D systems

Two-dimensional materials are ideal candidates to host Charge density waves (CDWs) that exhibit paramagnetic limiting behavior, similarly to the well known case of superconductors. Here we study how CDWs in two-dimensional systems can survive beyond the Pauli limit when they are subjected to a strong magnetic field by developing a generalized mean-field theory of CDWs under Zeeman fields that includes incommensurability, imperfect nesting and temperature effects and the possibility of a competing or coexisting Spin density wave (SDW) order. Our numerical calculations yield rich phase diagrams with distinct high-field phases above the Pauli limiting field. For perfectly nested commensurate CDWs, a $q$-modulated CDW phase that is completely analogous to the superconducting Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase appears at high-fields. In the more common case of imperfect nesting, the commensurate CDW groundstate undergoes a series of magnetic-field-induced phase transitions first into a phase where commensurate CDW and SDW coexist and subsequently into another phase where CDW and SDW acquire a $q$-modulation that is however distinct from the pure FFLO CDW phase. The commensurate CDW+SDW phase occurs for fields comparable to but less than the Pauli limit and survives above it. Thus this phase provides a plausible mechanism for the CDW to survive at high fields without the need of forming the more fragile FFLO phase. We suggest that the recently discovered 2D materials like the transition metal dichalcogenides offer a promising platform for observing such exotic field induced CDW phenomena.

Gapless Triplet Superconductivity in Magnetically Polarized Media

We reveal that in a magnetically polarized medium, a specific commensurate triplet pair density wave (TPDW) superconducting (SC) state, the staggered d-wave $Π$-triplet state, may coexist with homogeneous triplet SC states and even dominate eliminating them under generic conditions. When only this TPDW SC state is present, we have the remarkable phenomenon of gapless superconductivity. This may explain part of the difficulties in the realization of the engineered localized Majorana fermion modes for topological quantum computation. We point out qualitative characteristics of the tunneling density of states, specific heat and charge susceptibility that identify the accessible triplet SC regimes in a spinless medium.

General Rule Predicting the Hidden Induced Order Parameters and the Formation of Quartets and Patterns of Condensates

We reveal the rule with which we predicted, and verified by detailed numerical calculations on dozens of specific cases over the last decade, the emergence of hidden induced states and the formation of quartets of order parameters. The rule stipulates that if N order parameters are such that their cyclic products equal +1 or -1 then the presence of any N-1 of them will necessarily induce the missing order parameter as a hidden order. We demonstrate that the rule results from general microscopic mean field theory and is thus universally valid. Of exceptional physical interest are the cases N=4 called quartets, and all N>4 cases decompose into overlaping quartets which are the building blocks of observable patterns of condensates. Quartets may be found in two regimes, the "hierarchy" regime and the "equity" regime, and transitions between the two regimes exhibit universal characteristics. Following the rule, we predict many characteristic examples of quartets involving all types of particle-hole and superconducting condensates.

Holographic Charge Density Waves

We discuss a gravity dual of a charge density wave consisting of a U(1) gauge field and two scalar fields in the background of an AdS$_4$ Schwarzschild black hole together with an antisymmetric field (probe limit). Interactions drive the system to a phase transition below a critical temperature. We numerically compute the ground states characterized by modulated solutions for the gauge potential corresponding to a dynamically generated unidirectional charge density wave in the conformal field theory. Signatures of the holographic density waves are retrieved by studying the dynamical response to an external electric field. We find that this novel holographic state shares many common features with the standard condensed matter version of charge density wave systems.

Chirality Induced Tilted-Hill Giant Nernst Signal

We reveal a novel source of giant Nernst response exhibiting strong non-linear temperature and magnetic field dependence including the mysterious tilted-hill temperature profile observed in a pleiad of materials. The phenomenon results directly from the formation of a chiral ground state, e.g. a chiral d-density wave, which is compatible with the eventual observation of diamagnetism and is distinctly different from the usual quasiparticle and vortex Nernst mechanisms. Our picture provides a unified understanding of the anomalous thermoelectricity observed in materials as diverse as hole doped cuprates and heavy-fermion compounds like URu2Si2.

Competing Superconducting States in Strong Ferromagnets

We report results from a systematic study of the competition of exotic triplet pair density wave (PDW) superconductivity (SC) with homogeneous (zero pair momentum) SC in strongly polarized media such as half metallic systems. From the two different PDW states allowed by symmetry in this background only one may dominate or even coexist with homogeneous SC. We propose a direct experimental identification of PDW SC in this context. Our results suggest that these exotic states may plausibly emerge in heterostructures involving proximity of SC with half-metallic CrO$_2$ where induced SC is established in the half metallic region and in strongly ferromagnetic superconductors.

Magnetic field induced chiral particle-hole condensates

We demonstrate that a chiral particle-hole condensate is always induced by a number-conserving ground state of non-zero angular momentum in the presence of a magnetic field. The magnetic interaction originates from the coupling with the intrinsic orbital moment of the chiral state when the field is applied perpendicularly to the plane. According to our numerical results the induction mechanism is practically temperature independent providing robustness to these states up to high temperatures. This opens the door for manipulating the anomalous Hall response resulting from this intricate class of states for technological applications while it also suggests that chiral particle-hole condensates may be hidden in various complex materials.

Topological asymmetry in the damping-pairing contribution of electron-boson scattering

We make a harmonic analysis of the pairing and damping contribution of a finite $k$ range isotropic electron-phonon (or other boson) scattering in an anisotropic two-dimensional electronic system. We show that the pairing contribution of the anisotropic part of the electronic system can be much larger than its damping contribution enhancing significantly T_c. The higher is the order of the harmonic of the electronic anisotropy, smaller is its damping contribution and higher can be the asymmetry in its damping-pairing contribution. This could explain the puzzle of a much broader quasiparticle peak in the n-doped than in the p-doped cuprates, their smaller T_c's being also attributed to larger damping effects.
