Quantum Circuits for Matrix-Product Unitaries

Matrix-product unitaries (MPUs) are many-body unitary operators that, as a consequence of their tensor-network structure, preserve the entanglement area law in 1D systems. However, it is unknown how to implement an MPU as a quantum circuit since the individual tensors describing the MPU are not unitary. In this Letter, we show that a large class of MPUs can be implemented with a polynomial-depth quantum circuit. For an $N$-site MPU built from a repeated bulk tensor with open boundary, we explicitly construct a quantum circuit of polynomial depth $T = O(N^α)$ realizing the MPU, where the constant $α$ depends only on the bulk and boundary tensor and not the system size $N$. We show that this class includes nontrivial unitaries that generate long-range entanglement and, in particular, contains a large class of unitaries constructed from representations of $C^*$-weak Hopf algebras. Furthermore, we also adapt our construction to nonuniform translationally-varying MPUs and show that they can be implemented by a circuit of depth $O(N^β \, \mathrm{poly}\, D)$ where $β\le 1 + \log_2 \sqrt{D}/ s_{\min}$, with $D$ being the bond dimension and $s_{\min}$ the smallest nonzero Schmidt value of the normalized Choi state corresponding to the MPU.

Information Scrambling over Bipartitions: Equilibration, Entropy Production, and Typicality

In recent years, the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) has emerged as a diagnostic tool for information scrambling in quantum many-body systems. Here, we present exact analytical results for the OTOC for a typical pair of random local operators supported over two regions of a bipartition. Quite remarkably, we show that this "bipartite OTOC" is equal to the operator entanglement of the evolution and we determine its interplay with entangling power. Furthermore, we compute long-time averages of the OTOC and reveal their connection with eigenstate entanglement. For Hamiltonian systems, we uncover a hierarchy of constraints over the structure of the spectrum and elucidate how this affects the equilibration value of the OTOC. Finally, we provide operational significance to this bipartite OTOC by unraveling intimate connections with average entropy production and scrambling of information at the level of quantum channels.

Localizable quantum coherence

Coherence is a fundamental notion in quantum mechanics, defined relative to a reference basis. As such, it does not necessarily reveal the locality of interactions nor takes into account the accessible operations in a composite quantum system. In this paper, we put forward a notion of localizable coherence as the coherence that can be stored in a particular subsystem, either by measuring or just by disregarding the rest. We examine its spreading, its average properties in the Hilbert space and show that it can be applied to reveal the real-space structure of states of interest in quantum many-body theory, for example, localized or topological states.

Symmetries and monotones in Markovian quantum dynamics

What can one infer about the dynamical evolution of quantum systems just by symmetry considerations? For Markovian dynamics in finite dimensions, we present a simple construction that assigns to each symmetry of the generator a family of scalar functions over quantum states that are monotonic under the time evolution. The aforementioned monotones can be utilized to identify states that are non-reachable from an initial state by the time evolution and include all constraints imposed by conserved quantities, providing a generalization of Noether's theorem for this class of dynamics. As a special case, the generator itself can be considered a symmetry, resulting in non-trivial constraints over the time evolution, even if all conserved quantities trivialize. The construction utilizes tools from quantum information-geometry, mainly the theory of monotone Riemannian metrics. We analyze the prototypical cases of dephasing and Davies generators.
