Tensor Representations for the Drinfeld Double of the Taft Algebra

Over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb k$ of characteristic zero, the Drinfeld double $D_n$ of the Taft algebra that is defined using a primitive $n$th root of unity $q \in \mathbb k$ for $n \geq 2$ is a quasitriangular Hopf algebra. Kauffman and Radford have shown that $D_n$ has a ribbon element if and only if $n$ is odd, and the ribbon element is unique; however there has been no explicit description of this element. In this work, we determine the ribbon element of $D_n$ explicitly. For any $n \geq 2$, we use the R-matrix of $D_n$ to construct an action of the Temperley-Lieb algebra $\mathsf{TL}_k(ξ)$ with $ξ= -(q^{\frac{1}{2}}+q^{-\frac{1}{2}})$ on the $k$-fold tensor power $V^{\otimes k}$ of any two-dimensional simple $D_n$-module $V$. This action is known to be faithful for arbitrary $k \geq 1$. We show that $\mathsf{TL}_k(ξ)$ is isomorphic to the centralizer algebra $\text{End}_{D_n}(V^{\otimes k})$ for $1 \le k \le 2n-2$.

McKay Matrices for Finite-dimensional Hopf Algebras

For a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $A$, the McKay matrix $M_V$ of an $A$-module $V$ encodes the relations for tensoring the simple $A$-modules with $V$. We prove results about the eigenvalues and the right and left (generalized) eigenvectors of $M_V$ by relating them to characters. We show how the projective McKay matrix $Q_V$ obtained by tensoring the projective indecomposable modules of $A$ with $V$ is related to the McKay matrix of the dual module of $V$. We illustrate these results for the Drinfeld double $D_n$ of the Taft algebra by deriving expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of $M_V$ and $Q_V$ in terms of several kinds of Chebyshev polynomials. For the matrix $N_V$ that encodes the fusion rules for tensoring $V$ with a basis of projective indecomposable $D_n$-modules for the image of the Cartan map, we show that the eigenvalues and eigenvectors also have such Chebyshev expressions.

Chip firing on Dynkin diagrams and McKay quivers

Two classes of avalanche-finite matrices and their critical groups (integer cokernels) are studied from the viewpoint of chip-firing/sandpile dynamics, namely, the Cartan matrices of finite root systems and the McKay-Cartan matrices for finite subgroups G of general linear groups. In the root system case, the recurrent and superstable configurations are identified explicitly and are related to minuscule dominant weights. In the McKay-Cartan case for finite subgroups of the special linear group, the cokernel is related to the abelianization of the subgroup G. In the special case of the classical McKay correspondence, the critical group and the abelianization are shown to be isomorphic.

Dimensions of irreducible modules for partition algebras and tensor power multiplicities for symmetric and alternating groups

The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ are in Schur-Weyl duality on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$, so there is a surjection $\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{Z}_k(n) := \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}),$ which is an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We prove a dimension formula for the irreducible modules of the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{Z}_k(n)$ in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Via Schur-Weyl duality, these dimensions equal the multiplicities of the irreducible $\mathsf{S}_n$-modules in $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$. Our dimension expressions hold for any $n \geq 1$ and $k\ge0$. Our methods are based on an analog of Frobenius reciprocity that we show holds for the centralizer algebras of arbitrary finite groups and their subgroups acting on a finite-dimensional module. This enables us to generalize the above result to various analogs of the partition algebra including the centralizer algebra for the alternating group acting on $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ and the quasi-partition algebra corresponding to tensor powers of the reflection representation of $\mathsf{S}_n$.

Quantum walled Brauer-Clifford superalgebras

We introduce a new family of superalgebras, the quantum walled Brauer-Clifford superalgebras ${\mathsf {BC}}_{r,s}(q)$. The superalgebra ${\mathsf {BC}}_{r,s}(q)$ is a quantum deformation of the walled Brauer-Clifford superalgebra ${\mathsf {BC}}_{r,s}$ and a super version of the quantum walled Brauer algebra. We prove that ${\mathsf {BC}}_{r,s}(q)$ is the centralizer superalgebra of the action of ${\mathfrak U}_{q}({\mathfrak q}(n))$ on the mixed tensor space $\mathbf{V}_{q}^{r,s}=\mathbf{V}_{q}^{\otimes r} \otimes (\mathbf{V}_q^*)^{\otimes s}$ when $n \ge r+s$, where ${\mathbf V}_{q}=\mathbb{C}(q)^{(n|n)}$ is the natural representation of the quantum enveloping superalgebra ${\mathfrak U}_{q}({\mathfrak q}(n))$ and $\mathbf{V}_q^*$ is its dual space. We also provide a diagrammatic realization of ${\mathsf {BC}}_{r,s}(q)$ as the $(r,s)$-bead tangle algebra ${\mathsf {BT}}_{r,s}(q)$. Finally, we define the notion of $q$-Schur superalgebras of type $\mathsf{Q}$ and establish their basic properties.

Poincaré Series for Tensor Invariants and the McKay Correspondence

For a finite group G and a finite-dimensional G-module V, we prove a general result on the Poincaré series for the G-invariants in the tensor algebra T(V). We apply this result to the finite subgroups G of the 2-by-2 special unitary matrices and their natural module V of 2-by-1 column vectors. Because these subgroups are in one-to-one correspondence with the simply laced affine Dynkin diagrams by the McKay correspondence, the Poincaré series obtained are the generating functions for the number of walks on the simply laced affine Dynkin diagrams.

Some Problems in the Representation Theory of Simple Modular Lie Algebras

The finite-dimensional restricted simple Lie algebras of characteristic p > 5 are classical or of Cartan type. The classical algebras are analogues of the simple complex Lie algebras and have a well-advanced representation theory with important connections to Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, quantum groups at roots of unity, and the representation theory of algebraic groups. We survey progress that has been made towards developing a representation theory for the restricted simple Cartan-type Lie algebras, discuss comparable results in the classical case, formulate a couple of conjectures, and pose a dozen open problems for further study.

The center of the affine nilTemperley-Lieb algebra

We give a description of the center of the affine nilTemperley-Lieb algebra based on a certain grading of the algebra and on a faithful representation of it on fermionic particle configurations. We present a normal form for monomials, hence construct a basis of the algebra, and use this basis to show that the affine nilTemperley-Lieb algebra is finitely generated over its center. As an application, we obtain a natural embedding of the affine nilTemperley-Lieb algebra on N generators into the affine nilTemperley-Lieb algebra on N + 1 generators.

A Parametric Family of Subalgebras of the Weyl Algebra III. Derivations

An Ore extension over a polynomial algebra F[x] is either a quantum plane, a quantum Weyl algebra, or an infinite-dimensional unital associative algebra A_h generated by elements x,y, which satisfy yx-xy = h, where h is in F[x]. When h is nonzero, these algebras are subalgebras of the Weyl algebra A_1 and can be viewed as differential operators with polynomial coefficients. In previous work, we investigated the structure of A_h, determined its automorphisms and their invariants, and studied the irreducible A_h-modules. Here we determine the derivations of A_h over an arbitrary field.

A Schur-Weyl Duality Approach to Walking on Cubes

Walks on the representation graph $\mathcal R_{\mathsf{V}}(\mathsf{G})$ determined by a group $\mathsf{G}$ and a $\mathsf{G}$-module $\mathsf{V}$ are related to the centralizer algebras of the action of $\mathsf{G}$ on the tensor powers $\mathsf{V}^{\otimes k}$ via Schur-Weyl duality. This paper explores that connection when the group is $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$ and the module $\mathsf{V}$ is chosen so the representation graph is the $n$-cube. We describe a basis for the centralizer algebras in terms of labeled partition diagrams. We obtain an expression for the number of walks by counting certain partitions and determine the exponential generating functions for the number of walks

The Combinatorics of $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs

The nonelliptic $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs with $k$ "$+$"s on the top boundary and $3n-2k$ "$-$"s on the bottom boundary combinatorially model the space $\mathsf{Hom}_{\mathfrak{sl}_3}(\mathsf{V}^{\otimes (3n-2k)}, \mathsf{V}^{\otimes k})$ of $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module maps on tensor powers of the natural $3$-dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module $\mathsf{V}$, and they have connections with the combinatorics of Springer varieties. Petersen, Pylyavskyy, and Rhodes showed that the set of such $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs and the set of semistandard tableaux of shape $(3^n)$ and type $\{1^2,\dots,k^2,k+1,\dots, 3n-k\}$ have the same cardinalities. In this work, we use the $\sf{m}$-diagrams introduced by Tymoczko and the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to construct an explicit bijection, different from the one given by Russell, between these two sets. In establishing our result, we show that the pair of standard tableaux constructed using the notion of path depth is the same as the pair constructed from applying the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to a $3\,2\,1$-avoiding permutation. We also obtain a bijection between such pairs of standard tableaux and Westbury's $\mathsf{A_2}$ flow diagrams.

A Parametric Family of Subalgebras of the Weyl Algebra I. Structure and Automorphisms

An Ore extension over a polynomial algebra $\mathbb{F}[x]$ is either a quantum plane, a quantum Weyl algebra, or an infinite-dimensional unital associative algebra $\mathsf{A}_h$ generated by elements $x,y$, which satisfy $yx-xy = h$, where $h\in \mathbb{F}[x]$. We investigate the family of algebras $\mathsf{A}_h$ as $h$ ranges over all the polynomials in $\mathbb{F}[x]$. When $h \neq 0$, these algebras are subalgebras of the Weyl algebra $\mathsf{A}_1$ and can be viewed as differential operators with polynomial coefficients. We give an exact description of the automorphisms of $\mathsf{A}_h$ over arbitrary fields $\mathbb{F}$ and describe the invariants in $\mathsf{A}_h$ under the automorphisms. We determine the center, normal elements, and height one prime ideals of $\mathsf{A}_h$, localizations and Ore sets for $\mathsf{A}_h$, and the Lie ideal $[\mathsf{A}_h,\mathsf{A}_h]$. We also show that $\mathsf{A}_h$ cannot be realized as a generalized Weyl algebra over $\mathbb{F}[x]$, except when $h \in \mathbb{F}$. In two sequels to this work, we completely describe the derivations and irreducible modules of $\mathsf{A}_h$ over any field.

A Parametric Family of Subalgebras of the Weyl Algebra II. Irreducible Modules

In previous work, we studied the structure of A_h and determined its automorphism group and the subalgebra of invariants under the automorphism group. Here we determine the irreducible A_h-modules. In a sequel to this paper, we completely describe the derivations of A_h over any field.

Motzkin Algebras

We introduce an associative algebra $\M_k(x)$ whose dimension is the $2k$-th Motzkin number. The algebra $\M_k(x)$ has a basis of "Motzkin diagrams," which are analogous to Brauer and Temperley-Lieb diagrams, and it contains the Temperley-Lieb algebra $\TL_k(x)$ as a subalgebra. We prove that for a particular value of $x$, the algebra $\M_k(x)$ is the centralizer algebra of $\uqsl$ acting on the $k$-fold tensor power of the sum of the 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional irreducible $\uqsl$-modules. We show that $\M_k(x)$ is generated by special diagrams $\ell_i, t_i, r_i \ (1 \le i < k)$ and $p_j \ (1 \le j \le k)$, and that it has a factorization into three subalgebras $\M_k(x) = \RP_k \TL_k(x)\, \LP_k$, all of which have dimensions given by Catalan numbers. We define an action of $\M_k(x)$ on Motzkin paths of rank $r$, and in this way, construct a set of indecomposable modules $\C_k^{(r)}$, $0 \le r \le k$. We prove that $\M_k(x)$ is cellular in the sense of Graham and Lehrer and that the $\C_k^{(r)}$ are the left cell representations. We compute the determinant of the Gram matrix of a bilinear form on $\C_k^{(r)}$ for each $r$ and use these determinants to show that $\M_k(x)$ is semisimple exactly when $x$ is not the root of certain Chebyshev polynomials.

Multiparameter Weyl Algebras

We introduce a family of unital associative algebras A which are multiparameter analogues of the Weyl algebras and determine the simple weight modules and the Whittaker modules for them. All these modules can be regarded as spaces of (Laurent) polynomials with certain A-actions on them. This paper was written in February 2008 and some copies of it were distributed, but it has never been posted or published. We thank Bryan Bischof and Jason Gaddis for their interest in the work and for encouraging us to make the paper more widely available. The references in this posted version have been updated, and some cosmetic changes made; in particular, some typos have been corrected. The investigations have been generalized by V. Futorny and J. Hartwig to the context of multiparameter twisted Weyl algebras (see Journal of Algebra 357 (2012), 69-93).

Construction of Irreducible Representations over Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier Algebras of Finite Classical Type

We give an explicit construction of irreducible modules over Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras $R$ and their cyclotomic quotients $R^λ$ for finite classical types using a crystal basis theoretic approach. More precisely, for each element $v$ of the crystal $B(\infty)$ (resp. $B(λ)$), we first construct certain modules $\nabla(\mathbf{a};k)$ labeled by the adapted string $\mathbf{a}$ of $v$. We then prove that the head of the induced module $\ind \big(\nabla(\mathbf{a};1) \boxtimes...\boxtimes \nabla(\mathbf{a};n)\big)$ is irreducible and that every irreducible $R$-module (resp. $R^λ$-module) can be realized as the irreducible head of one of the induced modules $\ind (\nabla(\mathbf{a};1) \boxtimes...\boxtimes \nabla(\mathbf{a};n))$. Moreover, we show that our construction is compatible with the crystal structure on $B(\infty)$ (resp. $B(λ)$).

New Irreducible Modules for Heisenberg and Affine Lie Algebras

We study $\mathbb Z$-graded modules of nonzero level with arbitrary weight multiplicities over Heisenberg Lie algebras and the associated generalized loop modules over affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. We construct new families of such irreducible modules over Heisenberg Lie algebras. Our main result establishes the irreducibility of the corresponding generalized loop modules providing an explicit construction of many new examples of irreducible modules for affine Lie algebras. In particular, to any function $ϕ:\mathbb N\rightarrow \{\pm\}$ we associate a $ϕ$-highest weight module over the Heisenberg Lie algebra and a $ϕ$-imaginary Verma module over the affine Lie algebra. We show that any $ϕ$-imaginary Verma module of nonzero level is irreducible.

Hopf algebras with triality

In this paper we revisit and extend the constructions of Glauberman and Doro on groups with triality and Moufang loops to Hopf algebras. We prove that the universal enveloping algebra of any Lie algebra with triality is a Hopf algebra with triality. This allows us to give a new construction of the universal enveloping algebras of Malcev algebras. Our work relies on the approach of Grishkov and Zavarnitsine to groups with triality.

Lie Algebras with Prescribed sl3 Decomposition

In this work, we consider Lie algebras L containing a subalgebra isomorphic to sl3 and such that L decomposes as a module for that sl3 subalgebra into copies of the adjoint module, the natural 3-dimensional module and its dual, and the trivial one-dimensional module. We determine the multiplication in L and establish connections with structurable algebras by exploiting symmetry relative to the symmetric group S4.

The Equitable Basis for sl_2

This article contains an investigation of the equitable basis for the Lie algebra sl_2. Denoting this basis by {x,y,z}, we have [x,y] = 2x + 2y, [y,z] = 2y + 2z, [z, x] = 2z + 2x. One focus of our study is the group of automorphisms G generated by exp(ad x*), exp(ad y*), exp(ad z*), where {x*,y*,z*} is the basis for sl_2 dual to {x,y,z} with respect to the trace form (u,v) = tr(uv). We show that G is isomorphic to the modular group PSL_2(Z). Another focus of our investigation is the lattice L=Zx+Zy+Zz. We prove that the orbit G(x) equals {u in L |(u,u)=2}. We determine the precise relationship between (i) the group G, (ii) the group of automorphisms for sl_2 that preserve L, (iii) the group of automorphisms and antiautomorphisms for sl_2 that preserve L, and (iv) the group of isometries for (,) that preserve L. We obtain analogous results for the lattice L* =Zx*+Zy*+Zz*. Relative to the equitable basis, the matrix of the trace form is a Cartan matrix of hyperbolic type; consequently,we identify the equitable basis with the set of simple roots of the corresponding Kac-Moody Lie algebra g. Then L is the root lattice for g and 1/2L* is the weight lattice, and G(x) coincides with the set of real roots for g. Using L, L*, and G, we give several descriptions of the isotropic roots for g and show that each isotropic root has multiplicity 1. We describe the finite-dimensional sl_2-modules from the point of view of the equitable basis. In the final section, we establish a connection between the Weyl group orbit of the fundamental weights of g and Pythagorean triples.

Unitary Lie Algebras and Lie Tori of Type BC_r, r \geq 3

A Lie G-torus of type X_r is a Lie algebra with two gradings -- one by an abelian group G and the other by the root lattice of a finite irreducible root system of type X_r. In this paper we construct a centreless Lie G-torus of type BC_r, which we call a unitary Lie G-torus, as it is a special unitary Lie algebra of a nondegenerate G-graded hermitian form of Witt index r over an associative torus with involution. We prove a structure theorem for centreless Lie G-tori of type BC_r, r \geq 3, that states that any such Lie torus is bi-isomorphic to a unitary Lie G-torus, and we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for two unitary Lie G-tori to be bi-isomorphic. The motivation to investigate Lie G-tori came from the theory of extended affine Lie algebras, which are natural generalizations of the affine and toroidal Lie algebras. Every extended affine Lie algebra possesses an ideal which is a Lie n-torus of type X_r for some irreducible root system X_r, where by an n-torus we mean that the group G is a free abelian group of rank n for some n \geq 0. The structure theorem above enables us to classify centreless Lie n-tori of type BC_r, r \geq 3. We show that they are determined by pairs consisting of a quadratic form K on an n-dimensional Z_2-vector space and of an orbit of the orthogonal group of K. We use that result to construct extended affine Lie algebras of type BC_r, r \geq 3. Our article completes a large project involving many earlier papers and many authors to determine the centreless Lie n-tori of all types.

The Universal Central Extension of the Three-point sl_2 Loop Algebra

We give a presentation of the universal central extension of the three-point loop algebra L over sl_2 by generators and relations. Our presentation arises from the realization of L as the tetrahedron Lie algebra and leads to connections between the universal central extension and the Onsager Lie algebra. Symmetry under the alternating group A_4 features prominently in this work.

A quantum octonion algebra

Using the natural irreducible 8-dimensional representation and the two spin representations of the quantum group $U_q$(D$_4$) of D$_4$, we construct a quantum analogue of the split octonions and study its properties. We prove that the quantum octonion algebra satisfies the q-Principle of Local Triality and has a nondegenerate bilinear form which satisfies a q-version of the composition property. By its construction, the quantum octonion algebra is a nonassociative algebra with a Yang-Baxter operator action coming from the R-matrix of $U_q$(D$_4$). The product in the quantum octonions is a $U_q$(D$_4$)-module homomorphism. Using that, we prove identities for the quantum octonions, and as a consequence, obtain at $q = 1$ new ``representation theory'' proofs for very well-known identities satisfied by the octonions. In the process of constructing the quantum octonions we introduce an algebra which is a q-analogue of the 8-dimensional para-Hurwitz algebra.

Down-up Algebras

The algebra generated by the down and up operators on a differential partially ordered set (poset) encodes essential enumerative and structural properties of the poset. Motivated by the algebras generated by the down and up operators on posets, we introduce here a family of infinite-dimensional associative algebras called down-up algebras. We show that down-up algebras exhibit many of the important features of the universal enveloping algebra $U(\fsl)$ of the Lie algebra $\fsl$ including a Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt type basis and a well-behaved representation theory. We investigate the structure and representations of down-up algebras and focus especially on Verma modules, highest weight representations, and category $\mathcal O$ modules for them. We calculate the exact expressions for all the weights, since that information has proven to be particularly useful in determining structural results about posets.

Tensor product representations for orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras

We derive a general result about commuting actions on certain objects in braided rigid monoidal categories. This enables us to define an action of the Brauer algebra on the tensor space $V^{\otimes k}$ which commutes with the action of the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra $\spo(V)$ and the orthosymplectic Lie color algebra $\spo(V,β)$. We use the Brauer algebra action to compute maximal vectors in $V^{\otimes k}$ and to decompose $V^{\otimes k}$ into a direct sum of submodules $T^λ$. We compute the characters of the modules $T^λ$, give a combinatorial description of these characters in terms of tableaux, and model the decomposition of $V^{\otimes k}$ into the submodules $T^λ$ with a Robinson-Schensted-Knuth type insertion scheme.
