Gromov-Witten theory and Noether-Lefschetz theory for holomorphic-symplectic varieties

We use Noether-Lefschetz theory to study the reduced Gromov--Witten invariants of a holomorphic-symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type. This yields strong evidence for a new conjectural formula that expresses Gromov-Witten invariants of this geometry for arbitrary classes in terms of primitive classes. The formula generalizes an earlier conjecture by Pandharipande and the author for K3 surfaces. Using Gromov-Witten techniques we also determine the generating series of Noether-Lefschetz numbers of a general pencil of Debarre-Voisin varieties. This reproves and extends a result of Debarre, Han, O'Grady and Voisin on HLS divisors on the moduli space of Debarre-Voisin fourfolds.

Stable pairs and Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants on holomorphic symplectic 4-folds

As an analogy to Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, Klemm-Pandharipande defined Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants of a Calabi-Yau 4-fold $X$ using Gromov-Witten theory. When $X$ is holomorphic symplectic, Gromov-Witten invariants vanish and one can consider the corresponding reduced theory. In a companion work, we propose a definition of Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants for such a reduced theory. In this paper, we give them a sheaf theoretic interpretation via moduli spaces of stable pairs.

Donaldson-Thomas invariants of abelian threefolds and Bridgeland stability conditions

We study the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of abelian threefolds using Bridgeland stability conditions. The main result is the invariance of the reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants under all derived autoequivalences, up to explicitly given wall-crossing terms. We also present a numerical criterion for the absence of walls in terms of a discriminant function. For principally polarized abelian threefolds of Picard rank one, the wall-crossing contributions are discussed in detail. The discussion yield evidence for a conjectural formula for curve counting invariants by Bryan, Pandharipande, Yin, and the first author. For the proof we strengthen several known results on Bridgeland stability conditions of abelian threefolds. We show that certain previously constructed stability conditions satisfy the full support property. In particular, the stability manifold is non-empty. We also prove the existence of a Gieseker chamber and determine all wall-crossing contributions. A definition of reduced generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants for arbitrary Calabi-Yau threefolds with abelian actions is given.

Elliptic curves in hyper-Kähler varieties

We show that the moduli space of elliptic curves of minimal degree in a general Fano variety of lines of a cubic fourfold is a non-singular curve of genus $631$. The curve admits a natural involution with connected quotient. We find that the general Fano contains precisely $3780$ elliptic curves of minimal degree with fixed (general) $j$-invariant. More generally, we express (modulo a transversality result) the enumerative count of elliptic curves of minimal degree in hyper-Kähler varieties with fixed $j$-invariant in terms of Gromov--Witten invariants. In $K3[2]$-type this leads to explicit formulas of these counts in terms of modular forms.

Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces and a Kaneko-Zagier equation for Jacobi forms

We prove the existence of quasi-Jacobi form solutions for an analogue of the Kaneko--Zagier differential equation for Jacobi forms. The transformation properties of the solutions under the Jacobi group are derived. A special feature of the solutions is the polynomial dependence of the index parameter. The results yield an explicit conjectural description for all double ramification cycle integrals in the Gromov--Witten theory of K3 surfaces.

On reduced stable pair invariants

Let $X = S \times E$ be the product of a K3 surface $S$ and an elliptic curve $E$. Reduced stable pair invariants of $X$ can be defined via (1) cutting down the reduced virtual class with incidence conditions or (2) the Behrend function weighted Euler characteristic of the quotient of the moduli space by the translation action of $E$. We show that (2) arises naturally as the degree of a virtual class, and that the invariants (1) and (2) agree. This has applications to deformation invariance, rationality and a DT/PT correspondence for reduced invariants of $S \times E$.

Rational curves in holomorphic symplectic varieties and Gromov-Witten invariants

We use Gromov-Witten theory to study rational curves in holomorphic symplectic varieties. We present a numerical criterion for the existence of uniruled divisors swept out by rational curves in the primitive curve class of a very general holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$ type. We also classify all rational curves in the primitive curve class of the Fano variety of lines in a very general cubic $4$-fold, and prove the irreducibility of the corresponding moduli space. Our proofs rely on Gromov-Witten calculations by the first author, and in the Fano case on a geometric construction of Voisin. In the Fano case a second proof via classical geometry is sketched.

Curve counting on abelian surfaces and threefolds

We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Göttsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Goettsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

A Serre derivative for even weight Jacobi Forms

Using deformed or twisted Eisenstein Series, we construct a Jacobi-Serre derivative on even-weight Jacobi forms that generalizes the classical Serre derivative on modular forms. As an application, we obtain Ramanujan equations for the index $1$ Eisenstein series $E_{4,1}, E_{6,1}$ and a newly defined $E_{2,1}$. Finally, we relate the deformed Eisenstein Series directly to the classical first Jacobi theta function.
