Renormalization of the radiative jet function

We show how to compute directly the renormalization/evolution of the radiative jet function that appears in the factorization theorems for $B\to γ\ellν$ and $H\to γγ$ through a $b$-quark loop. We point out that, in order to avoid double counting of soft contributions, one should use in the factorization theorems a subtracted radiative jet function, from which soft contributions have been removed. The soft-contribution subtractions are zero-bin subtractions in the terminology of soft-collinear effective theory. We show that they can be factored from the radiative jet function and that the resulting soft-subtraction function gives rise to a nonlocal renormalization of the subtracted radiative jet function. This is a novel instance in which zero-bin subtractions lead to a nonlocality in the renormalization of a subtracted quantity that is not present in the renormalization of the unsubtracted quantity. We demonstrate the use of our formalism by computing the order-$α_s$ evolution kernel for the subtracted radiative jet function. Our result is in agreement with the result that had been inferred previously by making use of the factorization theorem for $B\to γ\ellν$, but that had been ascribed to the unsubtracted radiative jet function.

Covariant calculation of a two-loop test of nonrelativistic QCD factorization

We test the nonrelativistic QCD factorization conjecture for inclusive quarkonium production at two loops by carrying out a covariant calculation of the nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) long-distance matrix element (LDME) for a heavy-quark pair in an $S$-wave, color-octet state to fragment into a heavy-quark pair in a color-singlet state of arbitrary orbital angular momentum. The NRQCD factorization conjecture for the universality of the LDME requires that infrared divergences that it contains be independent of the direction of the Wilson line that appears in its definition. We find this to be the case in our calculation. The results of our calculation differ in some respects from those of a previous calculation that was carried out by Nayak, Qiu, and Sterman using light-cone methods. We have identified the sources of some of these differences. The results of both calculations are consistent with the NRQCD factorization conjecture. However, the general principle that underlies this confirmation of NRQCD factorization at two-loop order has yet to be revealed.

New method for fitting coefficients in standard model effective theory

We present an alternative method for carrying out a principal-component analysis of Wilson coefficients in standard model effective field theory (SMEFT). The method is based on singular-value decomposition (SVD). The SVD method provides information about the sensitivity of experimental observables to physics beyond the standard model that is not accessible in the Fisher-information method. In principle, the SVD method can also have computational advantages over diagonalization of the Fisher information matrix. We demonstrate the SVD method by applying it to the dimension-6 coefficients for the process of top-quark decay to a $b$ quark and a $W$ boson and use this example to illustrate some pitfalls in widely used fitting procedures. We also outline an iterative procedure for applying the SVD method to dimension-8 SMEFT coefficients.

Fragmentation contributions to hadroproduction of prompt $J/ψ$, $χ_{cJ}$, and $ψ(2S)$ states

We compute fragmentation corrections to hadroproduction of the quarkonium states $J/ψ$, $χ_{cJ}$, and $ψ(2S)$ at leading power in $m_c^2/p_T^2$, where $m_c$ is the charm-quark mass and $p_T$ is the quarkonium transverse momentum. The computation is carried out in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD. We include corrections to the parton-production cross sections through next-to-leading order in the strong coupling $α_s$ and corrections to the fragmentation functions through second order in $α_s$. We also sum leading logarithms of $p_T^2/m_c^2$ to all orders in perturbation theory. We find that, when we combine these leading-power fragmentation corrections with fixed-order calculations through next-to-leading order in $α_s$, we are able to obtain good fits for $p_T\geq 10$ GeV to hadroproduction cross sections that were measured at the Tevatron and the LHC. Using values for the nonperturbative long-distance matrix elements that we extract from the cross-section fits, we make predictions for the polarizations of the quarkonium states. We obtain good agreement with measurements of the polarizations, with the exception of the CDF Run II measurement of the prompt $J/ψ$ polarization, for which the agreement is only fair. In the predictions for the prompt-$J/ψ$ cross sections and polarizations, we take into account feeddown from the $χ_{cJ}$ and $ψ(2S)$ states.

Fragmentation contributions to $J/ψ$ photoproduction at HERA

We compute leading-power fragmentation corrections to $J/ψ$ photoproduction at DESY HERA, making use of the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach. Our calculations include parton production cross sections through order $α_s^3$, fragmentation functions though order $α_s^2$, and leading logarithms of the transverse momentum divided by the charm-quark mass to all orders in $α_s$. We find that the leading-power fragmentation corrections, beyond those that are included through next-to-leading order in $α_s$, are small relative to the fixed-order contributions through next-to-leading order in $α_s$. Consequently, an important discrepancy remains between the experimental measurements of the $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross section and predictions that make use of nonrelativistic-QCD long-distance matrix elements that are extracted from the $J/ψ$ hadroproduction cross-section and polarization data.

Quark fragmentation into spin-triplet $S$-wave quarkonium

We compute fragmentation functions for a quark to fragment to a quarkonium through an $S$-wave spin-triplet heavy quark-antiquark pair. We consider both color-singlet and color-octet heavy quark-antiquark ($Q\bar Q$) pairs. We give results for the case in which the fragmenting quark and the quark that is a constituent of the quarkonium have different flavors and for the case in which these quarks have the same flavors. Our results for the sum over all spin polarizations of the $Q\bar Q$ pairs confirm previous results. Our results for longitudinally polarized $Q\bar Q$ pairs agree with previous calculations for the same flavor cases and correct an error in a previous calculation for the different-flavor case.

Double Logarithms in $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ+ η_c$

Double logarithms of $Q^2/m_c^2$ that appear in the cross section for $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+ η_c$ at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling $α_s$ account for the bulk of the NLO correction at $B$-factory energies. (Here, $Q^2$ is the square of the center-of-momentum energy, and $m_c$ is the charm-quark mass.) We analyze the double logarithms that appear in the contribution of each NLO Feynman diagram, and we find that the double logarithms arise from both the Sudakov and the end-point regions of the loop integration. The Sudakov double logarithms cancel in the sum over all diagrams. We show that the end-point region of integration can be interpreted as a pinch-singular region in which a spectator fermion line becomes soft or soft and collinear to a produced meson. This interpretation may be important in establishing factorization theorems for helicity-flip processes, such as $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+ η_c$, and in resumming logarithms of $Q^2/m_c^2$ to all orders in $α_s$.

Fragmentation contributions to J/psi production at the Tevatron and the LHC

We compute leading-power fragmentation corrections to $J/ψ$ production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We find that, when these corrections are combined with perturbative corrections through next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant $α_s$, we obtain a good fit to high-$p_T$ cross section data from the CDF and CMS Collaborations. The fitted long-distance matrix elements lead to predictions of near-zero $J/ψ$ polarization in the helicity frame at large $p_T$.

Relativistic corrections to Higgs boson decays to quarkonia

We improve the theoretical predictions for the decays of the Higgs boson to an $S$-wave vector quarkonium plus a photon by calculating the relativistic correction of order $v^2$, where $v$ is the heavy-quark velocity in the quarkonium rest frame. Our numerical results are given for the $J/ψ$ and $Υ(nS)$ channels, with $n=1,2,3$. The numerical results include a previously calculated correction of order $α_s$ and summations, to all orders in $α_s$, of leading logarithms of $m_H^2/m_Q^2$, where $m_H$ is the Higgs-boson mass and $m_Q$ is the heavy-quark mass. These QCD corrections apply to the contribution of leading order in $v$ and to part of the order-$v^2$ correction. For the remainder of the order-$v^2$ correction, we sum leading logarithms of $m_H/m_Q$ through order $α_s^2$. These refinements reduce the theoretical uncertainties in the direct-production amplitudes for $H \to J/ψ+γ$ and $H \to Υ(1S)+γ$ by approximately a factor of 3 and open the door to improved determinations at the LHC of the Higgs-boson Yukawa couplings to the charm and bottom quarks.

Endpoint Logarithms in e+e- -> J/psi + eta_c

We investigate the origin of the double logarithms of Q^2/m_c^2 that appear in the calculation of the cross section for e+e- -> J/psi + eta_c at next-to-leading order in alpha_s. We find that, diagram-by-diagram, the double logarithms are accounted for by Sudakov double logarithms and endpoint double logarithms. The Sudakov double logarithms cancel in the sum over all diagrams, but the endpoint double logarithms do not. We reinterpret the endpoint double logarithms in terms of a leading region of loop integration in which a spectator fermion line becomes soft. This reinterpretation may simplify the process of establishing an all-orders factorization theorem for this helicity-flip process, which, in turn, might allow one to resum logarithms of Q^2/m_c^2 to all orders in alpha_s.

Higgs boson decays to quarkonia and the Hccbar coupling

In this paper we discuss decays of the Higgs boson to quarkonia in association with a photon. We identify a new mechanism for producing such final states in Higgs decays that leads to predictions for the decay rates that differ by an order of magnitude from previous estimates. Although the branching ratios for these processes are still small, the processes are experimentally clean, and the H \to J/ψ+gamma decay should be observable at a 14 TeV LHC. We point out that quantum interference between two different production mechanisms makes the decay rates sensitive to the HQQbar couplings. Consequently, measurements of the H \to J/ψ+gamma decay rate would allow one to probe the Higgs-charm coupling directly at the LHC. We discuss the experimental prospects for the observation of these decays and for the direct measurement of the Hccbar coupling.

Order-v^4 Relativistic Corrections to Gluon Fragmentation into ^3S_1 Quarkonium

We compute the relativistic corrections to the color-singlet contribution to gluon fragmentation into a J/psi at relative order v^4, making use of the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization approach. The corresponding full-QCD process exhibits infrared divergences that manifest themselves as single and double poles in epsilon in 4-2epsilon dimensions. We isolate the infrared-divergent contributions and treat them analytically. In the matching of full QCD to NRQCD, the pole contributions are absorbed into long-distance NRQCD matrix elements. The renormalizations of the ultraviolet divergences of the long-distance NRQCD matrix elements involve Born and one-loop single-pole counterterm contributions and Born double-pole counterterm contributions. While the order-v^4 contribution enhances the J/psi hadroproduction rate for the color-singlet channel substantially, this contribution is not important numerically in comparison with the color-octet contributions. We also find that the ^3P_J color-octet channel in the gluon fragmentation function contributes to J/psi hadroproduction significantly in comparison with the complete contribution of next-to-leading order in alpha_s in that channel.

Quarkonium at the Frontiers of High Energy Physics: A Snowmass White Paper

In this Snowmass White Paper, we discuss physics opportunities involving heavy quarkonia at the intensity and energy frontiers of high energy physics. We focus primarily on two specific aspects of quarkonium physics for which significant advances can be expected from experiments at both frontiers. The first aspect is the spectroscopy of charmonium and bottomonium states above the open-heavy-flavor thresholds. Experiments at e^+ e^- colliders and at hadron colliders have discovered many new, unexpected quarkonium states in the last 10 years. Many of these states are surprisingly narrow, and some have electric charge. The observations of these charged quarkonium states are the first definitive discoveries of manifestly exotic hadrons. These results challenge our understanding of the QCD spectrum. The second aspect is the production of heavy quarkonium states with large transverse momentum. Experiments at the LHC are measuring quarkonium production with high statistics at unprecedented values of p_T. Recent theoretical developments may provide a rigorous theoretical framework for inclusive production of quarkonia at large p_T. Experiments at the energy frontier will provide definitive tests of this framework. Experiments at the intensity frontier also provide an opportunity to understand the exclusive production of quarkonium states.

Factorization in exclusive quarkonium production

We present factorization theorems for two exclusive heavy-quarkonium production processes: production of two quarkonia in e^+e^- annihilation and production of a quarkonium and a light meson in B-meson decays. We describe the general proofs of factorization and supplement them with explicit one-loop analyses, which illustrate some of the features of the soft-gluon cancellations. We find that violations of factorization are generally suppressed relative to the factorized contributions by a factor v^2m_c/Q for each S-wave charmonium and a factor m_c/Q for each L-wave charmonium with L>0. Here, v is the velocity of the heavy quark or antiquark in the quarkonium rest frame, Q=sqrt{s} for e^+e^- annihilation, Q=m_B for B-meson decays, sqrt{s} is the e^+e^- center-of-momentum energy, m_c is the charm-quark mass, and m_B is the B-meson mass. There are modifications to the suppression factors if quantum-number restrictions apply for the specific process.

Factorization of low-energy gluons in exclusive processes

We outline a proof of factorization in exclusive processes, taking into account the presence of soft and collinear modes of arbitrarily low energy, which arise when the external lines of the process are taken on shell. Specifically, we examine the process of e^+e^- annihilation through a virtual photon into two light mesons. In an intermediate step, we establish a factorized form that contains a soft function that is free of collinear divergences. In contrast, in soft-collinear effective theory, the low-energy collinear modes factor most straightforwardly into the soft function. We point out that the cancellation of the soft function, which relies on the color-singlet nature of the external hadrons, fails when the soft function contains low-energy collinear modes.

Exclusive Double-Charmonium Production from e^+ e^- Annihilation into Two Virtual Photons

We calculate the contributions from QED processes involving two virtual photons to the cross sections for e^+ e^- annihilation into two charmonium states with the same C-parity. Generically, the cross sections are three orders of magnitude smaller than those for charmonia with opposite C-parity because they are suppressed by a factor of alpha^2/alpha_s^2. However, if both charmonia have quantum numbers J^{PC} = 1^{--}, then there is a contribution to the cross section that involves the fragmentation of each photon into a charmonium. The fragmentation contribution is enhanced by powers of E_{beam}/m_c, the ratio of the beam energy to the charm-quark mass, and this enhancement can compensate for the suppression factor that is associated with the coupling constants. In particular, the predicted cross section for J/psi + J/psi at the B factories is larger than that for J/psi + eta_c.

Spin correlations and velocity-scaling in color-octet NRQCD matrix elements

We compute spin-dependent decay matrix elements for S-wave charmonium and bottomonium in lattice nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD). Particular emphasis is placed upon the color-octet matrix elements, since the corresponding production matrix elements are expected to appear in the dominant contributions to the production cross sections at large transverse momenta. We use three slightly different versions of the heavy-quark lattice Green's functions in order to minimize the contributions that scale as powers of the ultraviolet cutoff. The lattice matrix elements that we calculate obey the hierarchy that is suggested by the velocity-scaling rules of NRQCD.

Resummation of QCD Corrections to the eta_c Decay Rate

We examine the ratio of the decay rate of the eta_c into light hadrons to the decay rate into photons and find that most of the large next-to-leading-order (NLO) correction is associated with running of the strong coupling alpha_s. We resum such contributions by analyzing final-state chains of vacuum-polarization bubbles. We show that the nonperturbative parts of the bubble chains can be absorbed into a color-octet matrix element, once one has used contour deformations of the phase-space integrals to cancel certain contributions. We argue that these contributions are incompatible with the uncertainty principle. We also argue that perturbation theory is reliable only if one carries out the phase-space integrations before the perturbation summation. Our results are in good agreement with experiment and differ considerably from those that one obtains by applying the scale-setting method of Brodsky, Lepage, and Mackenzie to the NLO result.

Renormalon Ambiguities in NRQCD Operator Matrix Elements

We analyze the renormalon ambiguities that appear in factorization formulas in QCD. Our analysis contains a simple argument that the ambiguities in the short-distance coefficients and operator matrix elements are artifacts of dimensional-regularization factorization schemes and are absent in cutoff schemes. We also present a method for computing the renormalon ambiguities in operator matrix elements and apply it to a computation of the ambiguities in the matrix elements that appear in the NRQCD factorization formulas for the annihilation decays of S-wave quarkonia. Our results, combined with those of Braaten and Chen for the short-distance coefficients, provide an explicit demonstration that the ambiguities cancel in the physical decay rates. In addition, we analyze the renormalon ambiguities in the Gremm-Kapustin relation and in various definitions of the heavy-quark mass.

Rigorous QCD Analysis of Inclusive Annihilation and Production of Heavy Quarkonium

A rigorous QCD analysis of the inclusive annihilation decay rates of heavy quarkonium states is presented. The effective-field-theory framework of nonrelativistic QCD is used to separate the short-distance scale of annihilation, which is set by the heavy quark mass $M$, from the longer-distance scales associated with quarkonium structure. The annihilation decay rates are expressed in terms of nonperturbative matrix elements of 4-fermion operators in nonrelativistic QCD, with coefficients that can be computed using perturbation theory in the coupling constant $α_s(M)$. The matrix elements are organized into a hierarchy according to their scaling with $v$, the typical velocity of the heavy quark. An analogous factorization formalism is developed for the production cross sections of heavy quarkonium in processes involving momentum transfers of order $M$ or larger. The factorization formulas are applied to the annihilation decay rates and production cross sections of S-wave states, up to corrections of relative order $v^3$, and of P-wave states, up to corrections of relative order $v^2$.

Rigorous QCD Predictions for Decays of P-Wave Quarkonia

Rigorous QCD predictions for decay rates of the P-wave states of heavy quarkonia are presented. They are based on a new factorization theorem which is valid to leading order in the heavy quark velocity and to all orders in the running coupling constant of QCD. The decay rates for all four P states into light hadronic or electromagnetic final states are expressed in terms of two phenomenological parameters, whose coefficients are perturbatively calculable. Logarithms of the binding energy encountered in previous perturbative calculations of P-wave decays are factored into a phenomenological parameter that is related to the probability for the heavy quark-antiquark pair to be in a color-octet S-wave state. Applying these predictions to charmonium, we use measured decay rates for the $\chione$ and $\chitwo$ to predict the decay rates of the $\chizero$ and $h_c$.
