Vertex operator algebra bundles on modular curves and their associated modular forms

This paper describes the vector bundle on the elliptic modular curve that is associated to a vertex operator algebra $V$ (VOA) or more generally a quasi-vertex operator algebra (QVOA), with a view towards future applications aimed at studying the characters of VOAs. We explain how the modes of sections of $V$ give rise naturally to $V$-valued quasi-modular forms. The space $Q(V)$ of $V$-valued quasi-modular forms is endowed with the structure of a doubled QVOA, and in particular the algebra $Q$ of quasi-modular forms is itself a doubled QVOA. $Q(V)$ also admits a natural derivative operator arising from the connection on the bundle defined by $V$ and the modular derivative, which we call the raising operator. We introduce an associated lowering operator $Λ$ on $Q(V)$ having the property that the $V$-valued modular forms $M(V)\subseteq Q(V)$ are the kernel of $Λ$. This extends the classical theory of scalar-valued quasi-modular forms. We exhibit an explicit isomorphism of $M(V)$ with $M \otimes V$. Finally, the coordinate invariance of vertex operators implies that $M(V)$ has a natural Hecke theory, and we use this isomorphism to fully describe the Hecke eigensystems: they are the same as the systems of eigenvalues that arise from scalar-valued quasi-modular forms.

p-adic vertex operator algebras

We postulate axioms for a chiral half of a nonarchimedean 2-dimensional bosonic conformal field theory, that is, a vertex operator algebra in which a p-adic Banach space replaces the traditional Hilbert space. We study some consequences of our axioms leading to the construction of various examples, including p-adic commutative Banach rings and p-adic versions of the Virasoro, Heisenberg, and the Moonshine module vertex operator algebras. Serre p-adic modular forms occur naturally in some of these examples as limits of classical 1-point functions.

Decompositions of index one Jacobi forms into $N=4$ characters and formulas for mock modular forms

It is shown that every weak Jacobi form of weight zero and index one on a congruence subgroup of the full Jacobi group can be decomposed into $N=4$ superconformal characters. Additionally, a simple expression for the mock modular form determining the superconformal character coefficients is obtained, as well as a universal completion structure. Along the way, a useful vector-valued mock modular form is also found and studied. These results are applied to analyze some Jacobi trace functions associated to super vertex operator algebras and a distinguished sector.

Classification of some vertex operator algebras of rank 3

We discuss the classification of strongly regular vertex operator algebras (VOAs) with exactly three simple modules whose character vector satisfies a monic modular linear differential equation with irreducible monodromy. Our Main Theorem provides a classification of all such VOAs in the form of one infinite family of affine VOAs, one individual affine algebra and two Virasoro algebras, together with a family of eleven exceptional character vectors and associated data that we call the $U$-series. We prove that there are at least $15$ VOAs in the $U$-series occurring as commutants in a Schellekens list holomorphic VOA. These include the affine algebra $E_{8,2}$ and Höhn's Baby Monster VOA $\mathbf{VB}^\natural_{(0)}$ but the other $13$ seem to be new. The idea in the proof of our Main Theorem is to exploit properties of a family of vector-valued modular forms with rational functions as Fourier coefficients, which solves a family of modular linear differential equations in terms of generalized hypergeometric series.

Jacobi trace functions in the theory of vertex operator algebras

We describe a type of n-point function associated to strongly regular vertex operator algebras V and their irreducible modules. Transformation laws with respect to the Jacobi group are developed for 1-point functions. For certain elements in V, the finite-dimensional space spanned by the corresponding 1-point functions for the inequivalent irreducible modules is shown to be a vector-valued weak Jacobi form. A decomposition of 1-point functions for general elements is proved, and shows that such functions are typically quasi-Jacobi forms. Zhu-type recursion formulas are proved; they show how an n-point function can be written as a linear combination of (n-1)-point functions with coefficients that are quasi-Jacobi forms.

On the structure of modules of vector valued modular forms

If $ρ$ denotes a finite dimensional complex representation of $\textbf{SL}_2(\textbf{Z})$, then it is known that the module $M(ρ)$ of vector valued modular forms for $ρ$ is free and of finite rank over the ring $M$ of scalar modular forms of level one. This paper initiates a general study of the structure of $M(ρ)$. Among our results are absolute upper and lower bounds, depending only on the dimension of $ρ$, on the weights of generators for $M(ρ)$, as well as upper bounds on the multiplicities of weights of generators of $M(ρ)$. We provide evidence, both computational and theoretical, that a stronger three-term multiplicity bound might hold. An important step in establishing the multiplicity bounds is to show that there exists a free-basis for $M(ρ)$ in which the matrix of the modular derivative operator does not contain any copies of the Eisenstein series $E_6$ of weight six.

Three-dimensional imprimitive representations of the modular group and their associated modular forms

This paper uses previous results of the authors on vector-valued modular forms to study certain non-congruence modular forms. We prove that these forms have unbounded denominators, and in certain cases we verify congruences of Atkin--Swinnerton-Dyer type satisfied by the Fourier coefficients of these forms. Our results rest on group-theoretic facts about the modular group, a detailed study of its imprimitive three-dimensional representations, and the theory of their associated vector-valued modular forms. For the proof of the congruences we also make essential use of a result of Katz.

Cleft Extensions and Quotients of Twisted Quantum Doubles

Given a pair of finite groups $F, G$ and a normalized 3-cocycle $ω$ of $G$, where $F$ acts on $G$ as automorphisms, we consider quasi-Hopf algebras defined as a cleft extension $\Bbbk^G_ω\#_c\,\Bbbk F$ where $c$ denotes some suitable cohomological data. When $F\rightarrow \overline{F}:=F/A$ is a quotient of $F$ by a central subgroup $A$ acting trivially on $G$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a surjection of quasi-Hopf algebras and cleft extensions of the type $\Bbbk^G_ω\#_c\, \Bbbk F\rightarrow \Bbbk^G_ω\#_{\overline{c}} \, \Bbbk \overline{F}$. Our construction is particularly natural when $F=G$ acts on $G$ by conjugation, and $\Bbbk^G_ω\#_c \Bbbk G$ is a twisted quantum double $D^ω(G)$. In this case, we give necessary and sufficient conditions that Rep($\Bbbk^G_ω\#_{\overline{c}} \, \Bbbk \overline{G}$) is a modular tensor category.

C-Graded Vertex Algebras and Conformal Flow

We consider C-graded vertex algebras, which are vertex algebras V with a C-grading such that V is an admissible V-module generated by 'lowest weight vectors'. We show that such vertex algebras have a 'good' representation theory in the sense that there is a Zhu algebra A(V) and a bijection between simple admissible V-modules and simple A(V)-modules. We also consider pseudo vertex operator algebras, which are C-graded vertex algebras with a conformal vector such that the homogeneous subspaces of V are generalized eigenspaces for L(0); essentially, these are VOAs that lack any semisimplicity or integrality assumptions on L(0). As a motivating example, we show that deformation of the conformal structure (conformal flow) of a strongly regular VOA (eg a lattice theory, or WZW model) is a path in a space whose points are PVOAs.

On the structure of $\mathbb{N}$-graded Vertex Operator Algebras

We consider the algebraic structure of $\mathbb{N}$-graded vertex operator algebras with conformal grading $V=\oplus_{n\geq 0} V_n$ and $\dim V_0\geq 1$. We prove several results along the lines that the vertex operators $Y(a, z)$ for $a$ in a Levi factor of the Leibniz algebra $V_1$ generate an affine Kac-Moody subVOA. If $V$ arises as a shift of a self-dual VOA of CFT-type, we show that $V_0$ has a `de Rham structure' with many of the properties of the de Rham cohomology of a complex connected manifold equipped with Poincaré duality.

$FSZ$-groups and Frobenius-Schur Indicators of Quantum Doubles

We study the higher Frobenius-Schur indicators of the representations of the Drinfel'd double of a finite group G, in particular the question as to when all the indicators are integers. This turns out to be an interesting group-theoretic question. We show that many groups have this property, such as alternating and symmetric groups, PSL_2(q), M_{11}, M_{12} and regular nilpotent groups. However we show there is an irregular nilpotent group of order 5^6 with non-integer indicators.

Free Bosonic Vertex Operator Algebras on Genus Two Riemann Surfaces II

We continue our program to define and study $n$-point correlation functions for a vertex operator algebra $V$ on a higher genus compact Riemann surface obtained by sewing surfaces of lower genus. Here we consider Riemann surfaces of genus 2 obtained by attaching a handle to a torus. We obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for free bosonic theories and lattice vertex operator algebras $V_L$. We prove that the partition function is holomorphic in the sewing parameters on a given suitable domain and describe its modular properties. We also compute the genus two Heisenberg vector $n$-point function and show that the Virasoro vector one point function satisfies a genus two Ward identity. We compare our results with those obtained in the companion paper, when a pair of tori are sewn together, and show that the partition functions are not compatible in the neighborhood of a two-tori degeneration point. The \emph{normalized} partition functions of a lattice theory $V_L$ \emph{are} compatible, each being identified with the genus two theta function of $L$.

Vertex operator algebras and weak Jacobi forms

Let $V$ be a strongly regular vertex operator algebra. For a state $h \in V_1$ satisfying appropriate integrality conditions, we prove that the space spanned by the trace functions Tr$_Mq^{L(0)-c/24}ζ^{h(0)} ($M$ a $V$-module) is a vector-valued weak Jacobi form of weight 0 and a certain index $<h, h >/2$. We discuss refinements and applications of this result when $V$ is holomorphic, in particular we prove that if $g = e^{h(0)}$ is a finite order automorphism then Tr$_V q^{L(0)-c/24}g$ is a modular function of weight 0 on a congruence subgroup of $SL_2(Z)$.

On the canonical decomposition of generalized modular functions

The authors have conjectured (\cite{KoM}) that if a normalized generalized modular function (GMF) $f$, defined on a congruence subgroup $Γ$, has integral Fourier coefficients, then $f$ is classical in the sense that some power $f^m$ is a modular function on $Γ$. A strengthened form of this conjecture was proved (loc cit) in case the divisor of $f$ is \emph{empty}. In the present paper we study the canonical decomposition of a normalized parabolic GMF $f = f_1f_0$ into a product of normalized parabolic GMFs $f_1, f_0$ such that $f_1$ has \emph{unitary character} and $f_0$ has \emph{empty divisor}. We show that the strengthened form of the conjecture holds if the first "few" Fourier coefficients of $f_1$ are algebraic. We deduce proofs of several new cases of the conjecture, in particular if either $f_0=1$ or if the divisor of $f$ is concentrated at the cusps of $Γ$.

On the Fourier coefficients of 2-dimensional vector-valued modular forms

Let $ρ: SL(2,\mathbb{Z})\to GL(2,\mathbb{C})$ be an irreducible representation of the modular group such that $ρ(T)$ has finite order $N$. We study holomorphic vector-valued modular forms $F(τ)$ of integral weight associated to $ρ$ which have \emph{rational} Fourier coefficients. (These span the complex space of all integral weight vector-valued modular forms associated to $ρ$.) As a special case of the main Theorem, we prove that if $N$ does \emph{not} divide 120 then every nonzero $F(τ)$ has Fourier coefficients with \emph{unbounded denominators}.

Free Bosonic Vertex Operator Algebras on Genus Two Riemann Surfaces I

We define the partition and $n$-point functions for a vertex operator algebra on a genus two Riemann surface formed by sewing two tori together. We obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for the Heisenberg free bosonic string and for any pair of simple Heisenberg modules. We prove that the partition function is holomorphic in the sewing parameters on a given suitable domain and describe its modular properties for the Heisenberg and lattice vertex operator algebras and a continuous orbifolding of the rank two fermion vertex operator super algebra. We compute the genus two Heisenberg vector $n$-point function and show that the Virasoro vector one point function satisfies a genus two Ward identity for these theories.

Structure of the module of vector-valued modular forms

Let $V$ be a representation of the modular group $Γ$ of dimension $p$. We show that the $\mathbb{Z}$-graded space $\mathcal{H}(V)$ of holomorphic vector-valued modular forms associated to $V$ is a free module of rank $p$ over the algebra $\mathcal{M}$ of classical holomorphic modular forms. We study the nature of $\mathcal{H}$ considered as a functor from $Γ$-modules to graded $\mathcal{M}$-lattices and give some applications, including the calculation of the Hilbert-Poincaré of $\mathcal{H}(V)$ in some cases.

Vertex Operators and Modular Forms

The leitmotif of these Notes is the idea of a vertex operator algebra (VOA) and the relationship between VOAs and elliptic functions and modular forms. This is to some extent analogous to the relationship between a finite group and its irreducible characters; the algebraic structure determines a set of numerical invariants, and arithmetic properties of the invariants provides feedback in the form of restrictions on the algebraic structure. One of the main points of these Notes is to explain how this works, and to give some reasonably interesting examples.

Group Cohomology and Gauge Equivalence of some Twisted Quantum Doubles

Dijkgraaf, Pasquier and Roche introduced twisted quantum doubles of a finite group in the context of conformal field theory. We study equivalences that arise among the braided monoidal categories associated to these quantum doubles, especially in the commutative case. This involves a close study of the cohomology of various complexes introduced by Eilenberg-MacLane. We show among other things that an equivalence of braided monoidal categories is the same as gauge equivalence of the corresponding quantum doubles, and that an invariant for an equivalence class is given by a metabolic quadratic space.
