Permutations generated by a depth 2 and infinite stack in series are algebraic

We prove that the class of permutations generated by passing an ordered sequence $12\dots n$ through a stack of depth 2 and an infinite stack in series is in bijection with an unambiguous context-free language, where a permutation of length $n$ is encoded by a string of length $3n$. It follows that the sequence counting the number of permutations of each length has an algebraic generating function. We use the explicit context-free language to compute the generating function: \begin{align*} \sum_{n\geq 0} c_n t^n &= \frac{(1+q)\left(1+5q-q^2-q^3-(1-q)\sqrt{(1-q^2)(1-4q-q^2)}\right)}{8q} \end{align*} where $c_n$ is the number of permutations of length $n$ that can be generated, and $q \equiv q(t) = \frac{1-2t-\sqrt{1-4t}}{2t}$ is a simple variant of the Catalan generating function. This in turn implies that $c_n^{1/n} \to 2+2\sqrt{5}$.

The Classification of Two Dimensional topological Field Theories

The goal of this paper is to introduce some of the major ideas behind extended topological quantum field theories with an emphasis on explicit examples and calculations. The statement of the Cobordism Hypothesis is explained and immediately used to classify framed and oriented extended two dimensional topological quantum field theories. The passage from framed theories to oriented theories is equivalent to giving homotopy fixed points of an $SO(n)$ action on the space of field theories. This paper then constructs extended two dimensional Dijkgraaf-Witten theory (also called finite gauge theory) as an example of a two dimensional extended field theory by assigning invariants at the level of points and extending up. Finally, it is concluded that Dijkgraaf-Witten theory is the only example of an extended framed two dimensional topological quantum field theory by showing that any field theory is equivalent to Dijkgraaf-Witen theory for some cyclic group.

The Riemann-Roch Theorem and Zero Energy Solutions of the Dirac Equation on the Riemann Sphere

In this paper, we revisit the connection between the Riemann-Roch theorem and the zero energy solutions of the two-dimensional Dirac equation in the presence of a delta-function like magnetic field. Our main result is the resolution of a paradox - the fact that the Riemann-Roch theorem correctly predicts the number of zero energy solutions of the Dirac equation despite counting what seems to be the wrong type of functions.
