Bounded entanglement entropy in the quantum Ising model

A rigorous proof is presented of the boundedness of the entanglement entropy of a block of spins for the ground state of the one-dimensional quantum Ising model with sufficiently strong transverse field. This is proved by a refinement of the arguments in the earlier work by the same authors (J. Statist. Phys. 131 (2008) 305-339). The proof is geometrical, and utilises a transformation to a model of classical probability called the continuum random-cluster model. Our method of proof is fairly robust, and applies also to certain disordered systems.

Influence in product spaces

The theory of influence and sharp threshold is a key tool in probability and probabilistic combinatorics, with numerous applications. One significant aspect of the theory is directed at identifying the level of generality of the product probability space that accommodates the event under study. We derive the influence inequality for a completely general product space, by establishing a relationship to the Lebesgue cube studied by Bourgain, Kahn, Kalai, Katznelson, and Linial (BKKKL) in 1992. This resolves one of the assertions of BKKKL. Our conclusion is valid also in the setting of the generalized influences of Keller.

Three theorems in discrete random geometry

These notes are focused on three recent results in discrete random geometry, namely: the proof by Duminil-Copin and Smirnov that the connective constant of the hexagonal lattice is \sqrt{2+\sqrt 2}; the proof by the author and Manolescu of the universality of inhomogeneous bond percolation on the square, triangular, and hexagonal lattices; the proof by Beffara and Duminil-Copin that the critical point of the random-cluster model on Z^2 is \sqrt q/(1+\sqrt q). Background information on the relevant random processes is presented on route to these theorems. The emphasis is upon the communication of ideas and connections as well as upon the detailed proofs.

A power-weighted variant of the EU27 Cambridge Compromise

The Cambridge Compromise composition of the European Parliament allocates five base seats to each Member State's citizenry, and apportions the remaining seats proportionately to population figures using the divisor method with rounding upwards and observing a 96 seat capping. The power-weighted variant avoids the capping step, proceeding instead by a progressive non-linear downweighting of the population figures until the largest State is allocated exactly 96 seats. The pertinent calculations of the variant are described, and its relative constitutional merits are discussed.

Sharp thresholds for the random-cluster and Ising models

A sharp-threshold theorem is proved for box-crossing probabilities on the square lattice. The models in question are the random-cluster model near the self-dual point $p_{\mathrm {sd}}(q)=\sqrt{q}/(1+\sqrt{q})$, the Ising model with external field, and the colored random-cluster model. The principal technique is an extension of the influence theorem for monotonic probability measures applied to increasing events with no assumption of symmetry.

Random Electrical Networks on Complete Graphs II: Proofs

This paper contains the proofs of Theorems 2 and 3 of the article entitled Random Electrical Networks on Complete Graphs, written by the same authors and published in the Journal of the London Mathematical Society, vol. 30 (1984), pp. 171-192. The current paper was written in 1983 but was not published in a journal, although its existence was announced in the LMS paper. This TeX version was created on 9 July 2001. It incorporates minor improvements to formatting and punctuation, but no change has been made to the mathematics. We study the effective electrical resistance of the complete graph $K_{n+2}$ when each edge is allocated a random resistance. These resistances are assumed independent with distribution $P(R=\infty)=1-n^{-1}γ(n)$, $P(R\le x) = n^{-1}γ(n)F(x)$ for $0\le x < \infty$, where $F$ is a fixed distribution function and $γ(n)\toγ\ge 0$ as $n\to\infty$. The asymptotic effective resistance between two chosen vertices is identified in the two cases $γ\le 1$ and $γ>1$, and the case $γ=\infty$ is considered. The analysis proceeds via detailed estimates based on the theory of branching processes.
