An existence result in annular regions times conical shells and its application to nonlinear Poisson systems

We provide a new existence result for abstract nonlinear operator systems in normed spaces, by means of topological methods. The solution is located within the product of annular regions and conical shells. The theoretical result possesses a wide range of applicability, which, for concreteness, we illustrate in the context of systems of nonlinear Poisson equations subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. For the latter problem we obtain existence and localization of solutions having all components nontrivial. This is also illustrated with an explicit example in which we also furnish a numerically approximated solution, consistent with the theoretical results. We conclude with an application of our results to a reaction--diffusion Lotka--Volterra system with source terms for competing species.

A positive eigenvalue result for semilinear differential equations in Banach spaces with functional initial conditions

We study the existence of positive eigenvalues with associated nonnegative mild eigenfunctions for a class of abstract initial value problems in Banach spaces with functional, possibly nonlocal, initial conditions. The framework includes periodic, multipoint, and integral average conditions. Our approach relies on nonlinear analysis, topological methods, and the theory of strongly continuous semigroups, yielding results applicable to a wide range of models. As an illustration, we apply the abstract theory to a reaction-diffusion equation with a nonlocal initial condition arising from a heat flow problem.

Positive solutions of systems of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations with arbitrary order dependence

Motivated by the study of systems of higher order boundary value problems with functional boundary conditions, we discuss, by topological methods, the solvability of a fairly general class of systems of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations, where the nonlinearities and the functionals involved depend on some derivatives. We improve and complement earlier results in the literature. We also provide some examples in order to illustrate the applicability of the theoretical results.

Non-trivial solutions of local and non-local Neumann boundary-value problems

We prove new results on the existence, non-existence, localization and multiplicity of nontrivial solutions for perturbed Hammerstein integral equations. Our approach is topological and relies on the classical fixed point index. Some of the criteria involve a comparison with the spectral radius of some related linear operators. We apply our results to some boundary value problems with local and nonlocal boundary conditions of Neumann type. We illustrate in some examples the methodologies used.

Nonlinear perturbed integral equations related to nonlocal boundary value problems

By topological arguments, we prove new results on the existence, non-existence, localization and multiplicity of nontrivial solutions of a class of perturbed nonlinear integral equations. These type of integral equations arise, for example, when dealing with boundary value problems where nonlocal terms occur in the differential equation and/or in the boundary conditions. Some examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Solutions of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations with applications

By means of topological methods, we provide new results on the existence, non-existence, localization and multiplicity of nontrivial solutions for systems of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations. In order to illustrate our theoretical results, we study some problems that occur in applied mathematics, namely models of chemical reactors, beams and thermostats. We also apply our theory in order to prove the existence of nontrivial radial solutions of systems of elliptic boundary value problems subject to nonlocal, nonlinear boundary conditions.

A Schauder-type theorem for discontinuous operators with applications to second-order BVPs

We prove a new fixed point theorem of Schauder-type which applies to discontinuous operators in non-compact domains. In order to do so, we present a modification of a recent Schauder-type theorem due to Pouso. We apply our result to second-order boundary value problems with discontinuous nonlinearities. We include an example to illustrate our theory.

Nontrivial solutions of boundary value problems for second order functional differential equations

In this paper we present a theory for the existence of multiple nontrivial solutions for a class of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations. Our methodology, rather than to work directly in cones, is to utilize the theory of fixed point index on affine cones. This approach is fairly general and covers a class of nonlocal boundary value problems for functional differential equations. Some examples are given in order to illustrate our theoretical results.

preprint2014arXiv

A positive fixed point theorem with applications to systems of Hammerstein integral equations

We present new criteria on the existence of fixed points that combine some monotonicity assumptions with the classical fixed point index theory. As an illustrative application, we use our theoretical results to prove the existence of positive solutions for systems of nonlinear Hammerstein integral equations. An example is also presented to show the applicability of our results.

A topological approach to periodic oscillations related to the Liebau phenomenon

We give some sufficient conditions for existence, non-existence and localization of positive solutions for a periodic boundary value problem related to the Liebau phenomenon. Our approach is of topological nature and relies on the Krasnosel'ski\uı-Guo theorem on cone expansion and compression. Our results improve and complement earlier ones in the literature.

A topological approach to the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of $(p,q)$-Laplacian systems

In this paper we develop a new theory for the existence, localization and multiplicity of positive solutions for a class of non-variational,quasilinear, elliptic systems. In order to do this, we provide a fairly general abstract framework for the existence of fixed points of nonlinear operators acting on cones that satisfy an inequality of Harnack type. Our methodology relies on fixed point index theory. We also provide a non-existence result and an example to illustrate the theory.

Infinite first order differential systems with nonlocal initial conditions

We discuss the solvability of an infinite system of first order ordinary differential equations on the half line, subject to nonlocal initial conditions. The main result states that if the nonlinearities possess a suitable "sub-linear" growth then the system has at least one solution. The approach relies on the application, in a suitable Fréchet space, of the classical Schauder-Tychonoff fixed point theorem. We show that, as a special case, our approach covers the case of a system of a finite number of differential equations. An illustrative example of application is also provided.

preprint2014arXiv

Nonzero radial solutions for a class of elliptic systems with nonlocal BCs on annular domains

We provide new results on the existence, non-existence, localization and multiplicity of nontrivial solutions for systems of Hammerstein integral equations. Some of the criteria involve a comparison with the spectral radii of some associated linear operators. We apply our results to prove the existence of multiple nonzero radial solutions for some systems of elliptic boundary value problems subject to nonlocal boundary conditions. Our approach is topological and relies on the classical fixed point index. We present an example to illustrate our theory.

preprint2014arXiv

Nonzero solutions of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations with deviated arguments and applications

We provide a theory to establish the existence of nonzero solutions of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations with deviated arguments, being our main ingredient the theory of fixed point index. Our approach is fairly general and covers a variety of cases. We apply our results to a periodic boundary value problem with reflections and to a thermostat problem. In the case of reflections we also discuss the optimality of some constants that occur in our theory. Some examples are presented to illustrate the theory.

Oscillation criteria for differential equations with several retarded arguments

Consider the first-order linear differential equation with several retarded arguments $$ x^{\prime}(t)+\sum\limits_{i=1}^{m}p_{i}(t)x(τ_{i}(t))=0,\;\;\;t\geq t_{0}, $$ where the functions $p_{i},τ_{i}\in C([t_{0,}\infty),\mathbb{R}^{+}),$ for every $i=1,2,\ldots,m,$ $τ_{i}(t)\leq t$ \ for $t\geq t_{0}$ and $% \lim_{t\rightarrow \infty}τ_{i}(t)=\infty $. The state of the art on the oscillation of all solutions to these equations are established especially in the case of non-monotone arguments. Examples illustrating the results are given.

Existence results for systems with nonlinear coupled nonlocal initial conditions

The purpose of the present work is to study the existence of solutions to initial value problems for nonlinear first order differential systems with nonlinear nonlocal boundary conditions of functional type. The existence results are established by means of the Perov, Schauder and Leray-Schauder fixed point principles combined with a technique based on vector-valued metrics and convergent to zero matrices.
