Planar boundaries and parabolic subgroups

We study the Bowditch boundaries of relatively hyperbolic group pairs, focusing on the case where there are no cut points. We show that if $(G,\mathcal{P})$ is a rigid relatively hyperbolic group pair whose boundary embeds in $S^2$, then the action on the boundary extends to a convergence group action on $S^2$. More generally, if the boundary is connected and planar with no cut points, we show that every element of $\mathcal{P}$ is virtually a surface group. This conclusion is consistent with the conjecture that such a group $G$ is virtually Kleinian. We give numerous examples to show the necessity of our assumptions.

The bumping set and the characteristic submanifold

We show here that the Nielsen core of the bumping set of the domain of discontinuity of a Kleinian group $Γ$ is the boundary of the characteristic submanifold of the associated 3-manifold with boundary. Some examples of interesting characteristic submanifolds are given. We also give a construction of the characteristic submanifold directly from the Nielsen core of the bumping set. The proofs are from "first principles", using properties of uniform domains and the fact that quasi-conformal discs are uniform domains.

Knot commensurability and the Berge conjecture

We investigate commensurability classes of hyperbolic knot complements in the generic case of knots without hidden symmetries. We show that such knot complements which are commensurable are cyclically commensurable, and that there are at most $3$ hyperbolic knot complements in a cyclic commensurability class. Moreover if two hyperbolic knots have cyclically commensurable complements, then they are fibered with the same genus and are chiral. A characterisation of cyclic commensurability classes of complements of periodic knots is also given. In the non-periodic case, we reduce the characterisation of cyclic commensurability classes to a generalization of the Berge conjecture.
