Cavity-funneled generation of indistinguishable single photons from strongly dissipative quantum emitters

We investigate theoretically the generation of indistinguishable single photons from a strongly dissipative quantum system placed inside an optical cavity. The degree of indistinguishability of photons emitted by the cavity is calculated as a function of the emitter-cavity coupling strength and the cavity linewidth. For a quantum emitter subject to strong pure dephasing, our calculations reveal that an unconventional regime of high indistinguishability can be reached for moderate emittercavity coupling strengths and high quality factor cavities. In this regime, the broad spectrum of a dissipative quantum system is funneled into the narrow lineshape of a cavity. The associated efficiency is found to greatly surpass spectral filtering effects. Our findings open the path towards on-chip scalable indistinguishable-photon emitting devices operating at room temperature.

Phase-sensitive transport at a normal metal-superconductor interface close to a Josephson junction

Phase- and voltage bias-sensitive quasiparticle transport at a double NIS1IS2NIS_1IS_2 interface is considered. The barriers II range from tunnel to transparent, and the intermediate region S1S_1 has a width comparable to the superconducting coherence length. A phase difference φφ is applied to the Josephson junction S1IS2S_1IS_2. The normal and Andreev reflections at the NIS1NIS_1 interface become φφ-sensitive, and transport is governed by interferences within the narrow S1S_1 region, both in the normal and anomalous channels. The subgap conductance is separately (energy EE)- and (phase φφ)- symmetric. Above the superconducting gap, the conductance is in general not symmetric even if (E,φ)(E,φ) is changed in (−E,−φ)(-E,-φ), but the symmetry is restored by averaging Fermi oscillations. The Tomasch oscillations are amplified by the phase difference. The subgap conductance exhibits a resonant structure at the energy of the Andreev bound states (ABS) of the S1IS2S_1IS_2 junction, providing a side-spectroscopy of such states. Depending on the relative transparencies of the junctions, the resonance can increase or reduce the conductance, and it can even vanish for φ=πφ=π, featuring total reflection of quasiparticles at NS1NS_1 by the ABS at S1S2S_1S_2.

Phonon-tuned bright single-photon source

Pure and bright single photon sources have recently been obtained by inserting solid-state emitters in photonic nanowires or microcavities. The cavity approach presents the attractive possibility to greatly increase the source operation frequency. However, it is perceived as technologically demanding because the emitter resonance must match the cavity resonance. Here we show that the spectral matching requirement is actually strongly lifted by the intrinsic coupling of the emitter to its environment. A single photon source consisting of a single InGaAs quantum dot inserted in a micropillar cavity is studied. Phonon coupling results in a large Purcell effect even when the quantum dot is detuned from the cavity resonance. The phonon-assisted cavity enhanced emission is shown to be a good single-photon source, with a brightness exceeding 4040 \% for a detuning range covering 15 cavity linewidths.
