Klein's ten planar dessins of degree 11, and beyond

We reinterpret ideas in Klein's paper on transformations of degree $11$ from the modern point of view of dessins d'enfants, and extend his results by considering dessins of type $(3,2,p)$ and degree $p$ or $p+1$, where $p$ is prime. In many cases we determine the passports and monodromy groups of these dessins, and in a few small cases we give drawings which are topologically (or, in certain examples, even geometrically) correct. We use the Bateman-Horn Conjecture and extensive computer searches to support a conjecture that there are infinitely many primes of the form $p=(q^n-1)/(q-1)$ for some prime power $q$, in which case infinitely many groups ${\rm PSL}_n(q)$ arise as permutation groups and monodromy groups of degree $p$ (an open problem in group theory).

Orders of simple groups and the Bateman--Horn Conjecture

We use the Bateman--Horn Conjecture from number theory to give strong evidence of a positive answer to Peter Neumann's question, whether there are infinitely many simple groups of order a product of six primes. (Those with fewer than six were classified by Burnside, Frobenius and Hölder in the 1890s.) The groups satisfying this condition are ${\rm PSL}_2(8)$, ${\rm PSL}_2(9)$ and ${\rm PSL}_2(p)$ for primes $p$ such that $p^2-1$ has just six prime factors. The conjecture suggests that there are infinitely many such primes, by providing heuristic estimates for their distribution which agree closely with evidence from computer searches. We also briefly discuss the applications of this conjecture to other problems in group theory, such as the classifications of permutation groups and of linear groups of prime degree, the structure of the power graph of a finite simple group, and the construction of highly symmetric block designs.

Groups of automorphisms of Riemann surfaces and maps of genus $p+1$ where $p$ is prime

We classify compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, where $g-1$ is a prime $p$, which have a group of automorphisms of order $ρ(g-1)$ for some integer $ρ\ge 1$, and determine isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties. This extends results of Belolipetzky and the second author for $ρ>6$, and of the first and third authors for $ρ=3, 4, 5$ and $6$. As a corollary we classify the orientably regular hypermaps (including maps) of genus $p+1$, together with the non-orientable regular hypermaps of characteristic $-p$, with automorphism group of order divisible by the prime $p$; this extends results of Conder, \v Sirá\v n and Tucker for maps.

Cayley properties of merged Johnson graphs

Extending earlier results of Godsil and of Dobson and Malnic on Johnson graphs, we characterise those merged Johnson graphs $J=J(n,k)_I$ which are Cayley graphs, that is, which are connected and have a group of automorphisms acting regularly on the vertices. We also characterise the merged Johnson graphs which are not Cayley graphs but which have a transitive group of automorphisms with vertex-stabilisers of order $2$. Even though these merged Johnson graphs are all vertex-transitive, we show that only relatively few of them are Cayley graphs or have a transitive group of automorphisms with vertex-stabilisers of order $2$.

Conjugacy classes of reflections of maps

This paper considers how many conjugacy classes of reflections a map can have, under various transitivity conditions. It is shown that for vertex- and for face-transitive maps there is no restriction on their number or size, whereas edge-transitive maps can have at most four classes of reflections. Examples are constructed, using topology, covering spaces and group theory, to show that various distributions of reflections can be achieved. Connections with real forms of algebraic curves are also discussed.

Symmetries of quasiplatonic Riemann surfaces

We state and prove a corrected version of a theorem of Singerman, which relates the existence of symmetries (anticonformal involutions) of a quasiplatonic Riemann surface $\mathcal S$ (one uniformised by a normal subgroup $N$ of finite index in a cocompact triangle group $Δ$) to the properties of the group $G=Δ/N$. We give examples to illustrate the revised necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of symmetries, and we relate them to properties of the associated dessins d'enfants, or hypermaps.

Characteristically simple Beauville groups, I: cartesian powers of alternating groups

A Beauville surface (of unmixed type) is a complex algebraic surface which is the quotient of the product of two curves of genus at least 2 by a finite group G acting freely on the product, where G preserves the two curves and their quotients by G are isomorphic to the projective line, ramified over three points. Such a group G is called a Beauville group. We show that if a characteristically simple group G is a cartesian power of a finite simple alternating group, then G is a Beauville group if and only if it has two generators and is not isomorphic to A_5.

Characteristically simple Beauville groups, II: low rank and sporadic groups

A Beauville surface is a rigid complex surface of general type, isogenous to a higher product by the free action of a finite group, called a Beauville group. Here we consider which characteristically simple groups can be Beauville groups. We show that if G is a cartesian power of a simple group L_2(q), L_3(q), U_3(q), Sz(2^e), R(3^e), or of a sporadic simple group, then G is a Beauville group if and only if it has two generators and is not isomorphic to A_5.

Combinatorial categories and permutation groups

The regular objects in various categories, such as maps, hypermaps or covering spaces, can be identified with the normal subgroups N of a given group Γ, with quotient group isomorphic to Γ/N. It is shown how to enumerate such objects with a given finite automorphism group G, how to represent them all as quotients of a single regular object U(G), and how they are acted on by the outer automorphism group of Γ. Examples constructed include kaleidoscopic maps with trinity symmetry.

Regular dessins with a given automorphism group

Dessins d'enfants are combinatorial structures on compact Riemann surfaces defined over algebraic number fields, and regular dessins are the most symmetric of them. If G is a finite group, there are only finitely many regular dessins with automorphism group G. It is shown how to enumerate them, how to represent them all as quotients of a single regular dessin U(G), and how certain hypermap operations act on them. For example, if G is a cyclic group of order n then U(G) is a map on the Fermat curve of degree n and genus (n-1)(n-2)/2. On the other hand, if G=A_5 then U(G) has genus 274218830047232000000000000000001. For other non-abelian finite simple groups, the genus is much larger.

Beauville surfaces with abelian Beauville group

A Beauville surface is a rigid surface of general type arising as a quotient of a product of curves $C_{1}$, $C_{2}$ of genera $g_{1},g_{2}\ge 2$ by the free action of a finite group $G$. In this paper we study those Beauville surfaces for which $G$ is abelian (so that $G\cong \mathbb{Z}_{n}^{2}$ with $\gcd(n,6)=1$ by a result of Catanese). For each such $n$ we are able to describe all such surfaces, give a formula for the number of their isomorphism classes and identify their possible automorphism groups. This explicit description also allows us to observe that such surfaces are all defined over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Elementary abelian regular coverings of Platonic maps, Case I: ordinary representations

We classify the orientably regular maps which are elementary abelian regular branched coverings of Platonic maps M, in the case where the covering group and the rotation group G of M have coprime orders. The method involves studying the representations of G on certain homology groups of the sphere, punctured at the branch-points. We give a complete classification for branching over faces (or, dually, vertices) of M, and outline how the method extends to other branching patterns.

Classification of nonorientable regular embeddings of Hamming graphs

By a regular embedding of a graph K in a surface we mean a 2-cell embedding of K in a compact connected surface such that the automorphism group acts regularly on flags. In this paper, we classify the nonorientable regular embeddings of the Hamming graph H(d,n). We show that there exists such an embedding if and only if n=2 and d=2, or n=3 or 4 and d>0, or n=6 and d=1 or 2. We also give constructions and descriptions of these embeddings.

Hyperbolic manifolds and tessellations of type {3,5,3} associated with L_2(q)

We classify the normal subgroups K of the tetrahedral group Delta=[3,5,3]^+, the even subgroup of the Coxeter group Gamma=[3,5,3], with Delta/K isomorphic to a finite simple group L_2(q). We determine their normalisers N(K) in the isometry group of hyperbolic 3-space H^3, the isometry groups N(K)/K of the associated hyperbolic 3-manifolds H^3/K, and the symmetry groups N_{Gamma}(K)/K of the icosahedral tessellations of these manifolds, giving a detailed analysis of how L_2(q) acts on these tessellations.

Constructions of Chiral Polytopes of Small Rank

An abstract polytope of rank n is said to be chiral if its automorphism group has precisely two orbits on the flags, such that adjacent flags belong to distinct orbits. The present paper describes a general method for deriving new finite chiral polytopes from old finite chiral polytopes of the same rank. In particular, the technique is used to construct many new examples in ranks 3, 4 and 5.

Regular embeddings of complete bipartite graphs: classification and enumeration

The regular embeddings of complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$ in orientable surfaces are classified and enumerated, and their automorphism groups and combinatorial properties are determined. The method depends on earlier classifications in the cases where $n$ is a prime power, obtained in collaboration with Du, Kwak, Nedela and Škoviera, together with results of Itô, Hall, Huppert and Wielandt on factorisable groups and on finite solvable groups.
