Engineering a squeezed phonon reservoir with a bichromatic driving of a quantum dot

We demonstrate how an acoustic phonon bath when coupled to a quantum dot with the help of a bichromatic laser field may effectively form a quantum squeezed reservoir. This approach allows to achieve an arbitrary degree of squeezing of the effective reservoir and it incorporates the properties of the reservoir into two parameters, which can be controlled by varying the ratio of the Rabi frequencies of the bichromatic field. It is found that for unequal Rabi frequencies, the effective reservoir may appear as a quantum squeezed field of ordinary or inverted harmonic oscillators. When the Rabi frequencies are equal the effective reservoir appears as a perfectly squeezed field in which the decay of one of the polarization quadratures of the quantum dot dipole moment is inhibited. The decay of the quantum dot to a stationary state which depends on the initial coherence is predicted. This unusual result is shown to be a consequence of a quantum-nondemolition type coupling of the quantum dot to the engineered squeezed reservoir. The effect of the initial coherence on the steady-state dressed-state population distribution and the fluorescence spectrum is discussed in details. The complete polarization of the dressed state population and asymmetric spectra composed of only a single Rabi sideband peak are obtained under strictly resonant excitation.

Non-classical non-Gaussian state of a mechanical resonator via selectively incoherent damping in three-mode optomechanical systems

We theoretically propose a scheme for the generation of a non-classical single-mode motional state of a mechanical resonator (MR) in the three-mode optomechanical systems, in which two optical modes of the cavities are linearly coupled to each other and one mechanical mode of the MR is optomechanically coupled to the two optical modes with the same coupling strength simultaneously. One cavity is driven by a coherent laser light. By properly tuning the frequency of the weak driving field, we obtain engineered Liouvillian superoperator via engineering the selective interaction Hamiltonian confined to the Fock subspaces. In this case, the motional state of the MR can be prepared into a non-Gaussian state, which possesses the sub-Poisson statistics although its Wigner function is positive.

Cooling a two-level emitter in photonic crystal environments

We investigate the resonant cooling phenomena of a driven two-level radiator embedded in a photonic crystal structure. We find that cooling occurs even at laser-atom-frequency resonance. This happens due to the atomic dressed-states coupling with different strengths resulting in population redistribution and cooling. Furthermore, for off-resonant driving the two-level particle can be in either ground or excited bare-state, respectively. This may help in engineering of novel amplified optical devices as well as highly coherent light sources.

Squeezing of a movable mirror via the dissipative optomechanical coupling

We investigate the squeezing for a movable mirror in the dissipative optomechanics in which the oscillating mirror modulates both the resonance frequency and the linewidth of the cavity mode. Via feeding a much weaker broadband squeezed vacuum light accompanying the coherent driving laser field into the cavity, the master equation for the cavity-mirror system is derived by following the general reservoir theory based on the density operator in which the reservoir variables are adiabatically eliminated by using the reduced density operator for the system in the interaction picture. When the mirror is weakly coupled to the cavity mode, we find that under the conditions of laser cooling to the ground state, the driven cavity field can effectively perform as a squeezed vacuum reservoir for the movable mirror via utilizing the completely destructive interference of quantum noise, and thus the efficient transfer of squeezing from the light to the movable mirror occurs, which is irrespective of the ratio between the cavity damping rate and the mechanical frequency. When the mirror is moderately coupled to the cavity mode, the photonic excitation can preclude the completely destructive interference of quantum noise, and as a consequence, the mirror deviates from the ideal squeezed state.

First-order coherence versus entanglement in a nano-mechanical cavity

The coherence and correlation properties of effective bosonic modes of a nano-mechanical cavity composed of an oscillating mirror and containing an optical lattice of regularly trapped atoms are studied. The system is modeled as a three-mode system, two orthogonal polariton modes representing the coupled optical lattice and the cavity mode, and one mechanical mode representing the oscillating mirror. We examine separately the cases of two-mode and three-mode interactions which are distinguished by a suitable tuning of the mechanical mode to the polariton mode frequencies. In the two-mode case, we find that the occurrence of entanglement between one of the polariton modes and the mechanical mode is highly sensitive to the presence of the first-order coherence between the modes. In particular, the creation of the first-order coherence among the modes is achieved at the expense of entanglement between the modes. In the three-mode case, we show that no entanglement is created between the independent polariton modes if both modes are coupled to the mechanical mode by the parametric interaction. There is no entanglement between the polaritons even if the oscillating mirror is damped by a squeezed vacuum field. The interaction creates the first-order coherence between the polaritons and the degree of coherence can, in principle, be as large as unity. This demonstrates that the oscillating mirror can establish the first-order coherence between two independent thermal modes. A further analysis shows that two independent thermal modes can be made entangled in the system only when one of the modes is coupled to the intermediate mode by a parametric interaction and the other is coupled by a linear-mixing interaction.

Two-particle dark state cooling of a nanomechanical resonator

The steady-state cooling of a nanomechanical resonator interacting with three coupled quantum dots is studied. General conditions for the cooling to the ground state with single and two-electron dark states are obtained. The results show that in the case of the interaction of the resonator with a single-electron dark state, no cooling of the resonator occurs unless the quantum dots are not identical. The steady-state cooling is possible only if the energy state of the quantum dot coupled to the drain electrode is detuned from the energy states of the dots coupled to the electron source electrode. The detuning has the effect of unequal shifting of the effective dressed states of the system that the cooling and heating processes occur at different frequencies. For the case of two electrons injected to the quantum dot system, the creation of a two-particle dark state is established to be possible with spin-antiparallel electrons. The results predict that with the two-particle dark state, an effective cooling can be achieved even with identical quantum dots subject of an asymmetry only in the charging potential energies coupling the injected electrons. It is found that similar to the case of the single-electron dark state, the asymmetries result in the cooling and heating processes to occur at different frequencies. However, an important difference between the single and two-particle dark state cases is that the cooling process occurs at significantly different frequencies. This indicates that the frequency at which the resonator could be cooled to its ground state can be changed by switching from the one-electron to the two-electron Coulomb blockade process.

Entanglement created by spontaneously generated coherence

We propose a scheme able to generate on demand a steady-state entanglement between two non-degenerate cavity modes. The scheme relies on the interaction of the cavity modes with driven two or three-level atoms which act as a coupler to build entanglement between the modes. We show that in the limit of a strong driving, crucial for the generation of entanglement between the modes is to imbalance populations of the dressed states of the driven atomic transition. In the case of a three-level V-type atom, we find that a stationary entanglement can be created on demand by tuning the Rabi frequency of the driving field to the difference between the atomic transition frequencies. The resulting degeneracy of the energy levels together with the spontaneously generated coherence generates a steady-state entanglement between the cavity modes. It is shown that the condition for the maximal entanglement coincides with the collapse of the atomic system into a pure trapping state. We also show that the creation of entanglement depends strongly on the mutual polarization of the transition atomic dipole moments.

Entangling two distant nanocavities via a waveguide

In this paper, we investigate the generation of continuous variable entanglement between two spatially-separate nanocavities mediated by a coupled resonator optical waveguide in photonic crystals. By solving the exact dynamics of the cavity system coupled to the waveguide, the entanglement and purity of the two-mode cavity state are discussed in detail for the initially separated squeezing inputs. It is found that the stable and pure entangled state of the two distant nanocavities can be achieved with the requirement of only a weak cavity-waveguide coupling when the cavities are resonant with the band center of the waveguide. The strong couplings between the cavities and the waveguide lead to the entanglement sudden death and sudden birth. When the frequencies of the cavities lie outside the band of the waveguide, the waveguide-induced cross frequency shift between the cavities can optimize the achievable entanglement. It is also shown that the entanglement can be easily manipulated through the changes of the cavity frequencies within the waveguide band.

Generating coherence and entanglement with a finite-size atomic ensemble in a ring cavity

We propose a model to study the coherence and entanglement resulting from the interaction of a finite-size atomic ensemble with degenerate counter-propagating field modes of a high-Q ring cavity. Our approach applies to an arbitrary number of atoms N and includes the spatial variation of the field throughout the ensemble. We report several new interesting aspects of coherence and entangled behavior that emerge when the size of the atomic ensemble is not taken to the thermodynamic limit of N>>1. Under such conditions, it is found that the counter-propagating cavity modes, although in the thermodynamic limit are mutually incoherent and exhibit no one-photon interference, the modes can, however, be made mutually coherent and exhibit interference after interacting with a finite-size atomic ensemble. It is also found that the spatial redistribution of the atoms over a finite size results in nonorthogonality of the collective bosonic modes. This nonorthogonality leads to the super-bunching effect that the correlations of photons of the individual cavity modes and of different modes are stronger than those of a thermal field. However, we find that the correlations are not strong enough to violate the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and to produce squeezing and entanglement between the modes. Therefore, we investigate the spectral distributions of the logarithmic negativity and the variances of the output fields. These functions determine squeezing and entanglement properties of the output cavity fields and can be measured by a homodyne technique. We find that the entanglement is redistributed over several components of the spectrum and the finite-size effect is to concentrate the entanglement at the zero-frequency component of the spectrum.

Nullity of quantum discord of two-qubit X-state systems

The conditions are established for nullity of quantum discord for mixed states of a general two-qubit system whose dynamical behaviour is given by an X-state form density matrix. It is found that quantum discord can vanish at a finite time even in the presence of correlations between qubits. The degeneracy of the populations of the combined states of the qubits and the multi-qubit quantum coherences are shown to be responsible for vanishing of the discord. We illustrate our considerations by examining the coherent-state Tavis-Cummings model in which two qubits interact dispersively with the cavity field. The disappearance of the discord is shown to be dependent on the initial atomic conditions that it may occur at a discrete instance or periodically at discrete instances redistributed over whole range of the evolution time. The nullity of the discord is interpreted as resulting from equal preparation of the spin anti-correlated and spin correlated product states in superposition~states.

Continuous variables approach to entanglement creation and processing

We apply the continuous variable approach to study entangled dynamics of coupled harmonic oscillators interacting with a thermal reservoir and to a deterministic creation of entanglement in an atomic ensemble located inside a high-Q ring cavity. In the case of harmonic oscillators, we show that a suitable unitary transformation of the position and momentum operators transforms the system to a set of independent harmonic oscillators with only one of them coupled to the reservoir. Working in the Wigner representation of the density operator, we find that the covariance matrix has a block diagonal form of smaller size matrices. This simple property allows to treat the problem to some extend analytically. We analyze the time evolution of an initial entanglement and find that the entanglement can persists for long times due to presence of constants of motion for the covariance matrix elements. In the case of an atomic ensemble located inside the cavity, the attention is focused on creation of one and two-mode continuous variable entangled states from the vacuum by applying laser pulses of a suitably adjusted amplitudes and phases. The pulses together with the cavity dissipation prepare the collective modes of the atomic ensemble in a desired entangled state.

Creation of pure multi-mode entangled states in a ring cavity

Practical schemes for creation of multi-mode squeezed (entangled) states of atomic ensembles located inside a high-Q ring cavity are discussed. It is assumed that the cavity is composed of two degenerate mutually counter-propagating modes that can simultaneously couple to the atomic ensembles with the same coupling strengths. The ensembles are composed of ultra-cold atoms which are modeled as four-level systems driven by two laser fields, both co-propagating with one of the cavity directions. We illustrate a procedure that constructs multi-mode squeezed states from the vacuum by a unitary transformation associated with the collective dynamics of the atomic ensembles subjected to driving lasers of a suitably adjusted amplitudes and phases. The lasers pulses together with the cavity dissipation prepare the collective modes in a desired stationary squeezed state.

Multi-mode entanglement of N harmonic oscillators coupled to a non-Markovian reservoir

Multi-mode entanglement is investigated in the system composed of $N$ coupled identical harmonic oscillators interacting with a common environment. We treat the problem very general by working with the Hamiltonian without the rotating-wave approximation and by considering the environment as a non-Markovian reservoir to the oscillators. We invoke an $N$-mode unitary transformation of the position and momentum operators and find that in the transformed basis the system is represented by a set of independent harmonic oscillators with only one of them coupled to the environment. Working in the Wigner representation of the density operator, we find that the covariance matrix has a block diagonal form that it can be expressed in terms of multiples of $3\times 3$ and $4\times 4$ matrices. This simple property allows to treat the problem to some extend analytically. We illustrate the advantage of working in the transformed basis on a simple example of three harmonic oscillators and find that the entanglement can persists for long times due to presence of constants of motion for the covariance matrix elements. We find that, in contrast to what one could expect, a strong damping of the oscillators leads to a better stationary entanglement than in the case of a weak damping.

Spectral properties of a thresholdless dressed-atom laser

We investigate spectral properties of the atomic fluorescence and the output field of the cavity-mode of a single-atom dressed-state laser in a photonic crystal. We pay a particular attention to the behavior of the spectra in the presence of the frequency dependent reservoir and search for signatures of the thresholdless lasing. Although the thresholdless behavior has been predicted by analyzing the photon statistics of the cavity field, we find that the threshold behavior still exists in the spectrum of the cavity field. We find that the structure of cavity field spectrum depends strongly on the strange of the pumping rate. For low pumping rates, the spectrum is not monochromatic, it is composed of a set of discrete lines reveling the discrete (quantum) structure of the combined dressed-atom plus the cavity field system. We find that for a certain value of the pumping rate, the multi-peak structure converts into a single very narrow line centered at the cavity field frequency. A physical explanation of the behavior of the spectra is provided in terms of dressed states of the system.

Thresholdless dressed-atom laser in a photonic band-gap material

We demonstrate the capability of complete thresholdless lasing operation between dressed states of a two-level atom located inside a microscopic cavity engineered in a photonic band-gap material. We distinguish between threshold and thresholdless behaves by analyzing the Mandel's Q parameter for the cavity field. We find that the threshold behave depends on whether the spontaneous emission is or is not present on the lasing transition. In the presence of the spontaneous emission, the mean photon number of the cavity field exhibits threshold behavior indicating that the system may operate as an ordinary laser. When the spontaneous emission is eliminated on the lasing transition, no threshold is observed for all values of the pumping rate indicating the system becomes a thresholdless laser. Moreover, we find that under a thresholdless operation, the mean photon number can increase nonlinearly with the pumping rate, and this process is accompanied by a sub-Poisson statistics of the field. This suggests that the nonclassical statistics can be used to distinguish a nonlinear operation of the dressed-atom laser.
