First-principles study on the solute-induced low diffusion and self-trapping of helium in fcc iron

The addition of alloying elements plays an essential role in helium (He) behaviours produced by transmutation in metal alloys. Effects of solutes (Ni, Cr, Ti, P, Si, C) on the behaviours of He and He-He pair in face-centred cube (fcc) iron have been investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). For the interactions of solutes and He, we found that Ti, P, Si, and C attracts He is more potent than Ni and Cr in fcc iron. We have determined the most stable configuration for the He-He pair, which is the Hesub-Hetetra pair with a binding energy of 1.60 eV. In considering the effect of solutes on the stability of the He-He pair, we have proposed a unique definition of binding energy. By applying the definition, we suggest that Ti and P could weaken He self-trapping, and Cr and C are beneficial for He self-trapping, while Ni is similar to the matrix Fe itself. For the diffusion of He, which is the necessary process of forming the He bubble, we determined that the most stable interstitial He is in a tetrahedral site and could migrate with the energy barrier of 0.16 eV in pure fcc iron. We further found that Ti and Si can increase the barrier to 0.18 and 0.20 eV; on the contrary, Cr and P decrease the barrier to 0.10 and 0.06 eV, respectively. Summarizing the calculations, we conclude that Ti decreases while Cr increases the diffusion and self-trapping of He in fcc iron.

Strong Neel ordering and luminescence correlation in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet

Magneto-optical effect has been widely used in light modulation, optical sensing and information storage. Recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals layered magnets are considered as promising platforms for investigating novel magneto-optical phenomena and devices, due to the long-range magnetic ordering down to atomically-thin thickness, rich species and tunable properties. However, majority 2D antiferromagnets suffer from low luminescence efficiency which hinders their magneto-optical investigations and applications. Here, we uncover strong light-magnetic ordering interactions in 2D antiferromagnetic MnPS3 utilizing a newly-emerged near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) mode far below its intrinsic bandgap. This ingap PL mode shows strong correlation with the Neel ordering and persists down to monolayer thickness. Combining the DFT, STEM and XPS, we illustrate the origin of the PL mode and its correlation with Neel ordering, which can be attributed to the oxygen ion-mediated states. Moreover, the PL strength can be further tuned and enhanced using ultraviolet-ozone treatment. Our studies offer an effective approach to investigate light-magnetic ordering interactions in 2D antiferromagnetic semiconductors.

Anisotropic Andreev reflection in semi-Dirac materials

In the framework of Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we theoretically study the Andreev reflection in normal-superconducting junctions based on semi-Dirac materials. Owing to the intrinsic anisotropy of semi-Dirac materials, the configuration of Andreev reflection and differential conductance are strongly orientation-dependent. For the transport along the linear dispersion direction, the differential conductance exhibits a clear crossover from retro Andreev reflection to specular Andreev reflection with an increasing bias-voltage, and the differential conductance oscillates without a decaying profile when the interfacial barrier strength increases. However, for the transport along the quadratic dispersion direction, the boundary between the retro Andreev reflection and specular Andreev reflection is ambiguous, and the differential conductance decays with increasing the momentum mismatch or the interfacial barrier strength. We illustrate the pseudo-spin textures to reveal the underling physics behind the anisotropic coherent transport properties. These results enrich the understanding of the superconducting coherent transport in semi-Dirac materials.
