Opportunities for precision QCD physics in hadronization at Belle II -- a snowmass whitepaper

This document presents a selection of QCD studies accessible to high-precision studies with hadronic final states in $e^+e^-$ collisions at Belle II. The exceptionally clean environment and the state-of-the-art capabilities of the Belle~II detector (including excellent particle identification and improved vertex reconstruction), coupled with an unprecedented data-set size, will make possible to carry out multiple valuable measurements of the strong interaction including hadronic contributions to the muon $(g-2)$ and the QCD coupling, as well as advanced studies of parton hadronization and dynamical quark mass generation.

The resummed Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution at the LHC

We apply QCD resummation techniques to study the transverse momentum distribution of Higgs bosons produced via gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC. In particular we focus on the joint resummation formalism which resums both threshold and transverse momentum corrections simultaneously. A comparison of results obtained in the joint and the standard recoil resummation frameworks is presented.

Summary: Working Group on QCD and Strong Interactions

In this summary of the considerations of the QCD working group at Snowmass 2001, the roles of quantum chromodynamics in the Standard Model and in the search for new physics are reviewed, with empahsis on frontier areas in the field. We discuss the importance of, and prospects for, precision QCD in perturbative and lattice calculations. We describe new ideas in the analysis of parton distribution functions and jet structure, and review progress in small-$x$ and in polarization.

Energy flow in QCD and event shape functions

Hadronization corrections to the thrust and related event shape distributions in the two-jet kinematical region of e+e- annihilation are summarized by nonperturbative shape functions. The moments of shape functions are given by universal matrix elements in QCD, which describe the energy flow in QCD final states. We show how the nonperturbative structure of these matrix elements may be inferred from resummed perturbation theory and Lorentz invariance. This analysis suggests the same functional forms for the shape functions as were found in phenomenological studies, and sheds light on the physical significance of the parameters that characterize these functions.

Power corrections to event shapes and factorization

We study power corrections to the differential thrust, heavy mass and related event shape distributions in $e^+e^-$-annihilation, whose values, $e$, are proportional to jet masses in the two-jet limit, $e\to 0$. The factorization properties of these differential distributions imply that they may be written as convolutions of nonperturbative "shape" functions, describing the emission of soft quanta by the jets, and resummed perturbative cross sections. The infrared shape functions are different for different event shapes, and depend on a factorization scale, but are independent of the center-of-mass energy $Q$. They organize all power corrections of the form $1/(eQ)^n$, for arbitrary $n$, and carry information on a class of universal matrix elements of the energy-momentum tensor in QCD, directly related to the energy-energy correlations.

An operator expansion for the elastic limit

A leading twist expansion in terms of bi-local operators is proposed for the structure functions of deeply inelastic scattering near the elastic limit $x \to 1$, which is also applicable to a range of other processes. Operators of increasing dimensions contribute to logarithmically enhanced terms which are supressed by corresponding powers of $1-x$. For the longitudinal structure function, in moment ($N$) space, all the logarithmic contributions of order $\ln^k N/N$ are shown to be resummable in terms of the anomalous dimension of the leading operator in the expansion.

Infrared factorization in inclusive B meson decays

We perform infrared factorization of differential rates of radiative and semileptonic inclusive decays of the B meson in the end-point region of photon and charged lepton spectrum, respectively, in the leading heavy quark mass limit. We find that the differential rates are expressed in terms of hard, jet and soft functions, which satisfy evolution equations. Solving these equations, we find expressions for the moments of the differential rates in their end-point regions, which take into account all leading and nonleading logarithmic corrections in perturbation theory, as well as large nonperturbative power corrections. Expanded to the one-loop level, our predictions coincide with the results of existing lowest order calculations for B->γX_s and B->l\barnu X_u. Nonperturbative corrections appear in our formalism from the boundary value of the soft function in the evolution equation. The soft function is a universal process-independent function, which describes the distribution of the b quark in the B meson. Its behavior in the end-point region is governed by the nonperturbative asymptotics of a Wilson line expectation value. By considering the contributions of infrared renormalons, we find an ansatz for the Wilson line, which leads to a Gaussian model for the heavy quark distribution function.

Nonperturbative Corrections in Resummed Cross Sections

We show that the resummation of large perturbative corrections in QCD leads to ambiguities in high energy cross sections that are suppressed by powers of large momentum scales. These ambiguities are caused by infrared renormalons, which are a general feature of resummed hard-scattering functions in perturbative QCD, even though these functions are infrared safe order-by-order in perturbation theory. As in the case of the operator product expansion, the contributions of infrared renormalons to coefficient functions may be absorbed into the definition of higher-dimensional operators, which induce nonperturbative corrections that are power-suppressed at high energies. The strength of the suppression is determined by the location of the dominant infrared renormalon, which may be identified explicitly in the resummed series. In contrast to the operator product expansion, however, the relevant operators in factorized hadron-hadron scattering and jet cross sections are generally nonlocal in QCD, although they may be expressed as local operators in an effective theory for eikonalized quarks. In this context, we verify and interpret the presence of $1/Q$ corrections to the inclusive Drell-Yan cross section with $Q$ the pair mass. In a similar manner, we find $\exp(-b^2\ln Q)$ corrections in the impact parameter space of the transverse momentum distributions of the Drell-Yan process and $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We also show that the dominant nonperturbative corrections to cone-based jet cross sections behave as $1/(Qδ)$, with $δ$ the opening angle of the jet and $Q$ the center of mass energy.
