Superconductivity-driven magnetization modulation in YBa2Cu3O7-δ /SrTiO3/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 heterostructures

Using spin polarized neutron reflectivity experiments, we demonstrate an unusual proximity behaviour when the superconductor (SC) and the ferromagnet (FM) are coupled through an insulator (I) in YBa2Cu3O7-δ (SC)/SrTiO3 (I)/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (FM) heterostructures. We have observed an unexpected magnetic modulation at the interface region of the FM below the superconducting transition temperature. The magnetization of the FM layer at the I/FM interface was drastically reduced as compared to the magnetization in the rest of the FM layer. This result indicates that the Cooper pairs tunnel across the insulator and interact with the local magnetization at the interface region (extending ~ 30 Å) of the FM causing modification of the magnetization at the interface. This unexpected magnetic behavior cannot be explained on the basis of the existing theoretical models. However, the length scale associated here clearly suggests the long range proximity effect as a result of tunneling of Cooper pairs.

Superconductivity-induced Magnetic Modulation in a Ferromagnet Through an Insulator in LaCaMnO3\SrTiO3\YBa2Cu3O7-δ Hybrid Heterostructures

Coexistence of ferromagnetic and superconducting orders and their interplay in ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructures is a topic of intense research. While it is well known that proximity of a ferromagnet suppresses superconducting order in the superconductor, there exist few studies indicating the proximity of a superconductor suppressing ferromagnetic order in a ferromagnet. Here we demonstrate a rare observation of the suppression of ferromagnetic order in a LaCaMnO3 layer separated from a YBa2Cu3O7-δ layer by a thin insulator (SrTiO3). Polarized neutron reflectivity measurements on LaCaMnO3\SrTiO3\YBa2Cu3O7-δ trilayer deposited on [001] SrTiO3 single crystal substrates shows the emergence of a thin magnetic dead layer in LaCaMnO3 adjacent to the insulating layer below its superconducting transition temperature of YBa2Cu3O7-δ. Further, the magnetic dead layer grows in thickness when the insulating layer is made thinner. This indicates a possible tunneling of the superconducting order-parameter through the insulating SrTiO3 inducing modulation of magnetization in LaCaMnO3.

A spin ladder compound doubles its superconducting TC under a gentle uniaxial pressure

Discovery of new high TC superconductors, with TC > 23 K, continues to be challenging. We have doubled the existing TC of single crystal Sr3Ca11Cu24O41, a spin ladder cuprate, from 12K to 24K, using a gentle uniaxial pressure ~ 0.06 GPa. In contrast, earlier works used a nearly 100 times larger hydrostatic pressure 5 GPa, only to reach a maximum TC ~ 12K. Our work exposes large and nearly equal, but opposing contributions to changes in TC, arising from compressions along and perpendicular to ladder planes, in hydrostatic pressure experiments. In our resistivity measurements, uniaxial pressure applied along ladder planes increase TC, while that perpendicular to ladder planes decrease TC. Our findings i) offers a new hope for further increase in TC in spin ladder compounds and ii) calls for a large shift in phase boundaries of the currently accepted pressure-temperature phase diagram.

Differential-thermal analysis around and below the critical temperature Tc of various low-Tc superconductors: A comparative study

We present specific-heat data on the type-II superconductors V3Si, LuNi2B2C and NbSe2 which were acquired with a low-temperature thermal analysis (DTA) technique. We compare our data with available literature data on these superconductors. In the first part we show that the DTA technique allows for fast measurements while providing a very high resolution on the temperature scale. Sharp features in the specific heat such as at the one at the transition to superconductivity are resolved virtually without instrumental broadening. In the second part we investigate the magnetic-field dependence of the specific heats of V3Si and LuNi2B2C at a fixed temperature T=7.5K to demonstrate that DTA techniques also allow for sufficiently precise measurements of absolute values of cp even in the absence of a sharp phase transition. The corresponding data for V3Si and LuNi2B2C are briefly discussed.

Suppression of the Melting Line in a Weakly Disordered Flux-line System

An analytic formula describing the suppression of the equilibrium melting line by quenched point pinning disorder is compared to data from ac susceptibility and magnetization measurements in the mixed phase of the layered dichalcogenide low T_c superconductor 2H-NbSe_2. This material exhibits a sharp peak effect in the critical current close to the upper critical field H_c2(T). Arguing that the disorder-suppressed melting line in this system is to be identified with the locus of peak positions of the critical current as magnetic field and temperature are varied, we demonstrate that this formula provides a remarkably accurate fit to the experimental data over three orders of magnitude in magnetic field.

Disordered Type-II Superconductors: A Universal Phase Diagram for Low-T$_c$ Systems

A universal phase diagram for weakly pinned low-T$_c$ type-II superconductors is revisited and extended with new proposals. The low-temperature ``Bragg glass'' phase is argued to transform first into a disordered, glassy phase upon heating. This glassy phase, a continuation of the high-field equilibrium vortex glass phase, then melts at higher temperatures into a liquid. This proposal provides an explanation for the anomalies observed in the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe$_2$ and several other low-T$_c$ materials which is independent of the microscopic mechanisms of superconductivity in these systems.

Peak Effect in Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ : Vortex Phase Diagram and Evidences for Stepwise Amorphization of Flux Line Lattice

The Peak Effect (PE) regime in a single crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ has been investigated in detail via ac susceptibility as well as dc magnetization measurements. The PE region comprises two discontinuous first order like transitions, located near its onset and peak positions and reflects a stepwise fracturing of the flux line lattice (FLL). This scenario can be construed as an alternative to a scheme involving the appearance of Generalized Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (GFFLO) state as considered in the case of PE phenomenon in isostructural Yb$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ system. The procedure of thermal cycling across the onset position of PE produces an open hysteresis loop, which is consistent with the notion of the fracturing of the FLL. A study of thermomagnetic history dependence of different metastable vortex states shows the path dependence in the critical current density J_c(H,T) over a large part of the (H,T) parameter space. The path dependence in J_c ceases above the peak position of the PE, suggesting a complete amorphization and the loss of long range correlations of the FLL at (T_p, H_p) line. A plausible vortex phase diagram has been illustrated for Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$n and phases like an elastic solid, a plastic solid, a pinned amorphous and an unpinned amorphous states have been identified.
