TCFHs, hidden symmetries and type II theories

We present the twisted covariant form hierarchies (TCFH) of type IIA and IIB 10-dimensional supergravities and show that all form bilinears of supersymmetric backgrounds satisfy the conformal Killing-Yano equation with respect to a TCFH connection. We also compute the Killing-Stäckel, Killing-Yano and closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors of all spherically symmetric type II brane backgrounds and demonstrate that the geodesic flow on these solutions is completely integrable by giving all independent charges in involution. We then identify all form bilinears of common sector and D-brane backgrounds which generate hidden symmetries for particle and string probe actions. We also explore the question on whether charges constructed from form bilinears are sufficient to prove the integrability of probes on supersymmetric backgrounds.

Symmetries, a systematic construction of invariant fields and AdS backgrounds

We give a systematic local description of invariant metrics and other invariant fields on a spacetime under the action of a (non-abelian) group. This includes the invariant fields in a neighbourhood of a principal and a special orbit. The construction is illustrated with examples. We also apply the formalism to give the R-symmetry invariant metrics of some AdS backgrounds and comment on applications to Kaluza-Klein theory.

Twisted form hierarchies, Killing-Yano equations and supersymmetric backgrounds

We show that the Killing spinor equations of all supergravity theories which may include higher order corrections on a (r,s)-signature spacetime are associated with twisted covariant form hierarchies. These hierarchies are characterized by a connection on the space of forms which may not be degree preserving. As a consequence we demonstrate that the form Killing spinor bi-linears of all supersymmetric backgrounds satisfy a suitable generalization of conformal Killing-Yano equation with respect to this connection. To illustrate the general proof the twisted covariant form hierarchies of some supergravity theories in 4, 5, 6, 10 and 11 dimensions are also presented.

AdS5 Backgrounds with 24 Supersymmetries

We prove a non-existence theorem for smooth AdS5 solutions with connected, compact without boundary internal space that preserve strictly 24 supersymmetries. In particular, we show that D=11 supergravity does not admit such solutions, and that all such solutions of IIB supergravity are locally isometric to the AdS_5 * S^5 maximally supersymmetric background. Furthermore, we prove that (massive) IIA supergravity also does not admit such solutions, provided that the homogeneity conjecture for massive IIA supergravity is valid. In the context of AdS/CFT these results imply that if strictly N=3 superconformal theories in 4-dimensions exist, their gravitational dual backgrounds are either singular or their internal spaces are not compact.

On supersymmetric Anti-de-Sitter, de-Sitter and Minkowski flux backgrounds

We test the robustness of the conditions required for the existence of (supersymmetric) warped flux anti-de Sitter, de Sitter, and Minkowski backgrounds in supergravity theories using as examples suitable foliations of anti-de Sitter spaces. We find that there are supersymmetric de Sitter solutions in supergravity theories including maximally supersymmetric ones in 10- and 11-dimensional supergravities. Moreover, warped flux Minkowski backgrounds can admit Killing spinors which are not Killing on the Minkowski subspace and therefore cannot be put in a factorized form.

C-spaces, generalized geometry and double field theory

We construct a C-space associated with every closed 3-form on a spacetime $M$ and show that it depends on the class of the form in $H^3(M, Z)$. We also demonstrate that C-spaces have a relation to generalized geometry and to gerbes. C-spaces are constructed after introducing additional coordinates at the open sets and at their double overlaps of a spacetime generalizing the standard construction of Kaluza-Klein spaces for 2-forms. C-spaces may not be manifolds and satisfy the topological geometrization condition. Double spaces arise as local subspaces of C-spaces that cannot be globally extended. This indicates that for the global definition of double field theories additional coordinates are needed. We explore several other aspect of C-spaces like their topology and relation to Whitehead towers, and also describe the construction of C-spaces for closed k-forms.

Estimation of connectivity measures in gappy time series

A new method is proposed to compute connectivity measures on multivariate time series with gaps. Rather than removing or filling the gaps, the rows of the joint data matrix containing empty entries are removed and the calculations are done on the remainder matrix. The method, called measure adapted gap removal (MAGR), can be applied to any connectivity measure that uses a joint data matrix, such as cross correlation, cross mutual information and transfer entropy. MAGR is favorably compared using these three measures to a number of known gap-filling techniques, as well as the gap closure. The superiority of MAGR is illustrated on time series from synthetic systems and financial time series.

Geometry and supersymmetry of heterotic warped flux AdS backgrounds

We classify the geometries of the most general warped, flux AdS backgrounds of heterotic supergravity up to two loop order in sigma model perturbation theory. We show under some mild assumptions that there are no $AdS_n$ backgrounds with $n\not=3$. Moreover the warp factor of AdS$_3$ backgrounds is constant, the geometry is a product $AdS_3\times M^7$ and such solutions preserve, 2, 4, 6 and 8 supersymmetries. The geometry of $M^7$ has been specified in all cases. For 2 supersymmetries, it has been found that $M^7$ admits a suitably restricted $G_2$ structure. For 4 supersymmetries, $M^7$ has an $SU(3)$ structure and can be described locally as a circle fibration over a 6-dimensional KT manifold. For 6 and 8 supersymmetries, $M^7$ has an $SU(2)$ structure and can be described locally as a $S^3$ fibration over a 4-dimensional manifold which either has an anti-self dual Weyl tensor or a hyper-Kähler structure, respectively. We also demonstrate a new Lichnerowicz type theorem in the presence of $α'$ corrections.

Heterotic Black Horizons

We show that the supersymmetric near horizon geometry of heterotic black holes is either an AdS_3 fibration over a 7-dimensional manifold which admits a G_2 structure compatible with a connection with skew-symmetric torsion, or it is a product R^{1,1} * S^8, where S^8 is a holonomy Spin(7) manifold, preserving 2 and 1 supersymmetries respectively. Moreover, we demonstrate that the AdS_3 class of heterotic horizons can preserve 4, 6 and 8 supersymmetries provided that the geometry of the base space is further restricted. Similarly R^{1,1} * S^8 horizons with extended supersymmetry are products of R^{1,1} with special holonomy manifolds. We have also found that the heterotic horizons with 8 supersymmetries are locally isometric to AdS_3 * S^3 * T^4, AdS_3 * S^3 * K_3 or R^{1,1} * T^4 * K_3, where the radii of AdS_3 and S^3 are equal and the dilaton is constant.

Index Theory and Supersymmetry of 5D Horizons

We prove that the near-horizon geometries of minimal gauged five-dimensional supergravity preserve at least half of the supersymmetry. If the near-horizon geometries preserve a larger fraction, then they are locally isometric to $AdS_5$. Our proof is based on Lichnerowicz type theorems for two horizon Dirac operators constructed from the supercovariant connection restricted to the horizon sections, and on an application of the index theorem. An application is that all half-supersymmetric five-dimensional horizons admit an $\mathfrak{sl}(2, {\mathbb{R}})$ symmetry subalgebra.

Supersymmetry of AdS and flat IIB backgrounds

We present a systematic description of all warped $AdS_n\times_w M^{10-n}$ and ${\mathbb{R}}^{n-1,1}\times_w M^{10-n}$ IIB backgrounds and identify the a priori number of supersymmetries $N$ preserved by these solutions. In particular, we find that the $AdS_n$ backgrounds preserve $N=2^{[{n\over2}]} k$ for $n\leq 4$ and $N=2^{[{n\over2}]+1} k$ for $4<n\leq 6$ supersymmetries and for $k\in {\mathbb{N}}_{+}$ suitably restricted. In addition under some assumptions required for the applicability of the maximum principle, we demonstrate that the Killing spinors of $AdS_n$ backgrounds can be identified with the zero modes of Dirac-like operators on $M^{10-n}$ establishing a new class of Lichnerowicz type theorems. Furthermore, we adapt some of these results to ${\mathbb{R}}^{n-1,1}\times_w M^{10-n}$ backgrounds with fluxes by taking the AdS radius to infinity. We find that these backgrounds preserve $N=2^{[{n\over2}]} k$ for $2<n\leq 4$ and $N=2^{[{n+1\over2}]} k$ for $4<n\leq 7$ supersymmetries. We also demonstrate that the Killing spinors of $AdS_n\times_w M^{10-n}$ do not factorize into Killing spinors on $AdS_n$ and Killing spinors on $M^{10-n}$.

preprint2015arXiv

Supersymmetry of IIA warped flux AdS and flat backgrounds

We identify the fractions of supersymmetry preserved by the most general warped flux AdS and flat backgrounds in both massive and standard IIA supergravities. We find that $AdS_n\times_w M^{10-n}$ preserve $2^{[{n\over2}]} k$ for $n\leq 4$ and $2^{[{n\over2}]+1} k$ for $4<n\leq 7$ supersymmetries, $k\in \bN_{>0}$. In addition we show that, for suitably restricted fields and $M^{10-n}$, the killing spinors of AdS backgrounds are given in terms of the zero modes of Dirac like operators on $M^{10-n}$. This generalizes the Lichnerowicz theorem for connections whose holonomy is included in a general linear group. We also adapt our results to $\bR^{1,n-1}\times_w M^{10-n}$ backgrounds which underpin flux compactifications to $\bR^{1,n-1}$ and show that these preserve $2^{[{n\over2}]} k$ for $2<n\leq 4$, $2^{[{n+1\over2}]} k$ for $4<n\leq 8$, and $2^{[{n\over2}]} k$ for $n=9, 10$ supersymmetries.

Dynamical symmetry enhancement near IIA horizons

We show that smooth type IIA Killing horizons with compact spatial sections preserve an even number of supersymmetries, and that the symmetry algebra of horizons with non-trivial fluxes includes an sl(2,R) subalgebra. This confirms the conjecture of [1] for type IIA horizons. As an intermediate step in the proof, we also demonstrate new Lichnerowicz type theorems for spin bundle connections whose holonomy is contained in a general linear group.

Seeking the balance: Patching double and exceptional field theories

We investigate the patching of double and exceptional field theories. In double field theory the patching conditions imposed on the spacetime after solving the strong section condition imply that the 3-form field strength $H$ is exact. A similar conclusion can be reached for the form field strengths of exceptional field theories after some plausive assumptions are made on the relation between the transition functions of the additional coordinates and the patching data of the form field strengths. We illustrate the issues that arise, and explore several alternative options which include the introduction of C-folds and of the topological geometrisation condition.

Spinorial geometry, horizons and superconformal symmetry in six dimensions

The spinorial geometry method of solving Killing spinor equations is reviewed as it applies to 6-dimensional (1,0) supergravity. In particular, it is explained how the method is used to identify both the fractions of supersymmetry preserved by and the geometry of all supersymmetric backgrounds. Then two applications are described to systems that exhibit superconformal symmetry. The first is the proof that some 6-dimensional black hole horizons are locally isometric to $AdS_3\times Σ^3$, where $Σ^3$ is diffeomeorphic to $S^3$. The second one is a description of all supersymmetric solutions of 6-dimensional (1,0) superconformal theories and in particular of their brane solitons.

Supersymmetry of AdS and flat backgrounds in M-theory

We give a systematic description of all warped $AdS_n$ and ${\mathbb{R}}^{n-1,1}$ backgrounds of M-theory and identify the a priori number of supersymmetries that these backgrounds preserve. In particular, we show that $AdS_n$ backgrounds preserve $N= 2^{[{n\over2}]} k$ for $n\leq4$ and $N= 2^{[{n\over2}]+1} k$ for $4<n\leq 7$ supersymmetries while ${\mathbb{R}}^{n-1,1}$ backgrounds preserve $N= 2^{[{n\over2}]} k$ for $n\leq4$ and $N= 2^{[{n+1\over2}]} k$ for $4<n\leq7$, supersymmetries. Furthermore for $AdS_n$ backgrounds that satisfy the requirements for the maximum principle to hold, we show that the Killing spinors can be identified with the zero modes of Dirac-like operators on $M^{11-n}$ coupled to fluxes thus establishing a new class of Lichnerowicz type theorems. We also demonstrate that the Killing spinors of generic warped $AdS_n$ backgrounds do not factorize into products of Killing spinors on $AdS_n$ and Killing spinors on the transverse space.

Brane solitons of (1,0) superconformal theories in six dimensions with hypermultiplets

We solve the Killing spinor equations of 6-dimensional (1,0) superconformal theories which include hyper-multiplets in all cases. We show that the solutions preserve 1,2,3,4 and 8 supersymmetries. We find models with self-dual string solitons which are smooth and supported by instantons with an arbitrary gauge group, and 3-brane solitons as expected from the M-brane intersection rules.

IIB horizons

We solve the Killing spinor equations for all near-horizon IIB geometries which preserve at least one supersymmetry. We show that generic horizon sections are 8-dimensional almost Hermitian spin${}_c$ manifolds. Special cases include horizon sections with a $Spin(7)$ structure and those for which the Killing spinor is pure. We also explain how the common sector horizons and the horizons with only 5-form flux are included in our general analysis. We investigate several special cases mainly focusing on the horizons with constant scalars admitting a pure Killing spinor and find that some of these exhibit a generalization of the 2-SCYT condition that arises in the horizons with 5-form fluxes only. We use this to construct new examples of near-horizon geometries with both 3-form and 5-form fluxes.

preprint2013arXiv

Index theory and dynamical symmetry enhancement near IIB horizons

We show that the number of supersymmetries of IIB black hole horizons is N=2 N_- + 2 index(D_λ), where index(D_λ) is the index of the Dirac operator twisted with the line bundle λ^{1/2} of IIB scalars, and N_- is the dimension of the kernel of a horizon Dirac operator which depends on IIB fluxes. Therefore, all IIB horizons preserve an even number of supersymmetries. In addition if the horizons have non-trivial fluxes and N_- is nonzero, then index(D_λ) is non-negative, and the horizons admit an sl(2,R) symmetry subalgebra. This provides evidence that all such horizons have an AdS/CFT dual. Furthermore if the orbits of sl(2,R) are two-dimensional, the IIB horizons are warped products AdS_2 X S.

preprint2013arXiv

Index theory and dynamical symmetry enhancement of M-horizons

We show that near-horizon geometries of 11-dimensional supergravity preserve an even number of supersymmetries. The proof follows from Lichnerowicz type theorems for two horizon Dirac operators, the field equations and Bianchi identities, and the vanishing of the index of a Dirac operator on the 9-dimensional horizon sections. As a consequence of this, we also prove that all M-horizons with non-vanishing fluxes admit a sl(2,R) subalgebra of symmetries.

IIB black hole horizons with five-form flux and KT geometry

We investigate the near horizon geometry of IIB supergravity black holes with non-vanishing 5-form flux preserving at least two supersymmetries. We demonstrate that there are three classes of solutions distinguished by the choice of Killing spinors. We find that the spatial horizon sections of the class of solutions with an SU(4) invariant pure Killing spinor are hermitian manifolds and admit a hidden Kahler with torsion (KT) geometry compatible with the SU(4) structure. Moreover the Bianchi identity of the 5-form, which also implies the field equations, can be expressed in terms of the torsion H as d(ω\wedge H)=\partial\bar\partial ω^2=0, where omega is a Hermitian form. We give several examples of near horizon geometries which include group manifolds, group fibrations over KT manifolds and uplifted geometries of lower dimensional black holes. Furthermore, we show that the class of solutions associated with a Spin(7) invariant spinor is locally a product R^{1,1} x S, where S is a holonomy Spin(7) manifold.

M-Horizons

We solve the Killing spinor equations and determine the near horizon geometries of M-theory that preserve at least one supersymmetry. The M-horizon spatial sections are 9-dimensional manifolds with a Spin(7) structure restricted by geometric constraints which we give explicitly. We also provide an alternative characterization of the solutions of the Killing spinor equation, utilizing the compactness of the horizon section and the field equations, by proving a Lichnerowicz type of theorem which implies that the zero modes of a Dirac operator coupled to 4-form fluxes are Killing spinors. We use this, and the maximum principle, to solve the field equations of the theory for some special cases and present some examples.

New potentials for conformal mechanics

We find under some mild assumptions that the most general potential of 1-dimensional conformal systems with time independent couplings is expressed as $V=V_0+V_1$, where $V_0$ is a homogeneous function with respect to a homothetic motion in configuration space and $V_1$ is determined from an equation with source a homothetic potential. Such systems admit at most an $SL(2,\bR)$ conformal symmetry which, depending on the couplings, is embedded in Diff(R)$ in three different ways. In one case, $SL(2,\bR)$ is also embedded in Diff(S^1). Examples of such models include those with potential $V=αx^2+βx^{-2}$ for arbitrary couplings $α$ and $β$, the Calogero models with harmonic oscillator couplings and non-linear models with suitable metrics and potentials. In addition, we give the conditions on the couplings for a class of gauge theories to admit a $SL(2,\bR)$ conformal symmetry. We present examples of such systems with general gauge groups and global symmetries that include the isometries of $AdS_2 x S^3$ and $AdS_2 x S^3 x S^3$ which arise as backgrounds in $AdS_2/CFT_1$.

AdS backgrounds from black hole horizons

We utilize the classification of IIB horizons with 5-form flux to present a unified description for the geometry of AdS_n, n=3,5,7 solutions. In particular, we show that all such backgrounds can be constructed from 8-dimensional 2-strong Calabi-Yau geometries with torsion which admit some additional isometries. We explore the geometry of AdS_3 and AdS_5 solutions but we do not find AdS_7 solutions.

IIB black hole horizons with five-form flux and extended supersymmetry

We classify under some assumptions the IIB black hole horizons with 5-form flux preserving more than 2 supersymmetries. We find that the spatial horizon sections with non-vanishing flux preserving 4 supersymmetries are locally isometric either to S^1 * S^3 * T^4 or to S^1 * S^3 * K_3 and the associated near horizon geometries are locally isometric to AdS_3 * S^3 * T^4 and AdS_3 * S^3 * K_3$, respectively. Killing-Yano equations with torsion, worldline actions and G-structures

We determine the geometry of the target spaces of supersymmetric non-relativistic particles with torsion and magnetic couplings, and with symmetries generated by the fundamental forms of G-structures for $G= U(n), SU(n), Sp(n), Sp(n)\cdot Sp(1), G_2$ and $Spin(7)$. We find that the Killing-Yano equation, which arises as a condition for the invariance of the worldline action, does not always determine the torsion coupling uniquely in terms of the metric and fundamental forms. We show that there are several connections with skew-symmetric torsion for $G=U(n), SU(n)$ and $G_2$ that solve the invariance conditions. We describe all these compatible connections for each of the $G$-structures and explain the geometric nature of the couplings.

Static M-horizons

We determine the geometry of all static black hole horizons of M-theory preserving at least one supersymmetry. We demonstrate that all such horizons are either warped products R^{1,1} *_w S or AdS_2 *_w S, where S admits an appropriate Spin(7) or SU(4) structure respectively; and we derive the conditions imposed by supersymmetry on these structures. We show that for electric static horizons with Spin(7) structure, the near horizon geometry is a product R^{1,1} * S, where S is a compact Spin(7) holonomy manifold. For electric static solutions with SU(4) structure, we show that the horizon section S is a circle fibration over an 8-dimensional Kahler manifold which satisfies an additional condition involving the Ricci scalar and the length of the Ricci tensor. Solutions include AdS_2 * S^3 * CY_6 as well as many others constructed from taking the 8-dimensional Kahler manifold to be a product of Kahler-Einstein and Calabi-Yau spaces.

Classification of IIB backgrounds with 28 supersymmetries

We show that all IIB backgrounds with strictly 28 supersymmetries are locally isometric to the plane wave solution of arXiv:hep-th/0206195. Moreover, we demonstrate that all solutions with more than 26 supersymmetries and only 5-form flux are maximally supersymmetric. The N=28 plane wave solution is a superposition of the maximally supersymmetric IIB plane wave with a heterotic string solution. We investigate the propagation of strings in this background, find the spectrum and give the string light-cone Hamiltonian.

Heterotic horizons, Monge-Ampere equation and del Pezzo surfaces

Heterotic horizons preserving 4 supersymmetries have sections which are T^2 fibrations over 6-dimensional conformally balanced Hermitian manifolds. We give new examples of horizons with sections S^3 X S^3 X T^2 and SU(3). We then examine the heterotic horizons which are T^4 fibrations over a Kahler 4-dimensional manifold. We prove that the solutions depend on 6 functions which are determined by a non-linear differential system of 6 equations that include the Monge-Ampere equation. We show that this system has an explicit solution for the Kahler manifold S^2 X S^2. We also demonstrate that there is an associated cohomological system which has solutions on del Pezzo surfaces. We raise the question of whether for every solution of the cohomological problem there is a solution of the differential system, and so a new heterotic horizon. The horizon sections have topologies which include ((k-1) S^2 X S^4 # k (S^3 X S^3)) X T^2$ indicating the existence of exotic black holes. We also find an example of a horizon section which gives rise to two different near horizon geometries.

M-theory backgrounds with 30 Killing spinors are maximally supersymmetric

We show that all M-theory backgrounds which admit more than 29 Killing spinors are maximally supersymmetric. Classification of supersymmetric backgrounds of string theory

We review the recent progress made towards the classification of supersymmetric solutions in ten and eleven dimensions with emphasis on those of IIB supergravity. In particular, the spinorial geometry method is outlined and adapted to nearly maximally supersymmetric backgrounds. We then demonstrate its effectiveness by classifying the maximally supersymmetric IIB G-backgrounds and by showing that N=31 IIB solutions do not exist.

Deformations of generalized calibrations and compact non-Kahler manifolds with vanishing first Chern class

We investigate the deformation theory of a class of generalized calibrations in Riemannian manifolds for which the tangent bundle has reduced structure group U(n), SU(n), G_2 and Spin(7). For this we use the property of the associated calibration form to be parallel with respect to a metric connection which may have non-vanishing torsion. In all these cases, we find that if there is a moduli space, then it is finite dimensional. We present various examples of generalized calibrations that include almost hermitian manifolds with structure group U(n) or SU(n), nearly parallel G_2 manifolds and group manifolds. We find that some Hopf fibrations are deformation families of generalized calibrations. In addition, we give sufficient conditions for a hermitian manifold (M,g,J) to admit Chern and Bismut connections with holonomy contained in SU(n). In particular we show that any connected sum of $k \geq 3$ copies of $S^3 \times S^3$ admits a hermitian structure for which the restricted holonomy of a Bismut connection is contained in SU(3).

Solvable model of strings in a time-dependent plane-wave background

We investigate a string model defined by a special plane-wave metric ds^2 = 2dudv - l(u) x^2 du^2 + dx^2 with l(u) = k/u^2 and k=const > 0. This metric is a Penrose limit of some cosmological, Dp-brane and fundamental string backgrounds. Remarkably, in Rosen coordinates the metric has a ``null cosmology'' interpretation with flat spatial sections and scale factor which is a power of the light-cone time u. We show that: (i) This spacetime is a Lorentzian homogeneous space. In particular, like Minkowski space, it admits a boost isometry in u,v. (ii) It is an exact solution of string theory when supplemented by a u-dependent dilaton such that its exponent (i.e. effective string coupling) goes to zero at u=infinity and at the singularity u=0, reducing back-reaction effects. (iii) The classical string equations in this background become linear in the light-cone gauge and can be solved explicitly in terms of Bessel's functions; thus the string model can be directly quantized. This allows one to address the issue of singularity at the string-theory level. We examine the propagation of first-quantized point-particle and string modes in this time-dependent background. Using certain analytic continuation prescription we argue that string propagation through the singularity can be smooth.

Moduli Spaces and Brane Solitons for M-Theory Compactifications on Holonomy G_2 Manifolds

We investigate the local geometry on the moduli space of G_2 structures that arises in compactifications of M-theory on holonomy G_2 manifolds. In particular, we determine the homogeneity properties of couplings of the associated N=1, D=4 supergravity under the scaling of moduli space coordinates. We then find some brane solitons of N=1, D=4 supergravity that are associated with wrapping M-branes on cycles of the compact space. These include cosmic strings and domain walls that preserve half of supersymmetry of the four-dimensional theory, and non-supersymmetric electrically and magnetically charged black holes. The geometry of some of the black holes is that of non-extreme M-brane configurations reduced to four-dimensions on a seven torus.

The Universality of M-branes

We review the evidence for the various dualities amongst the five D=10 superstring theories and for the existence of M-theory using the associated effective supergravity theories. We also summarise the combinatorial technics developed for constructing BPS solutions in D=11 supergravity theory and conjecture that all the BPS solutions of D<11 supergravity theories can be derived from the BPS solutions of D=11 supergravity that preserve 1/2 the supersymmetry. To demonstrate this, we derive the dyonic p-brane solutions from eleven dimensions.

(2,0)-supersymmetric sigma models and almost complex structures

We find a new class of (2,0)-supersymmetric two-dimensional sigma models with torsion and target spaces almost complex manifolds extending similar results for models with (2,2) supersymmetry. These models are invariant under a new symmetry which is generated by a Noether charge of Lorentz weight one and it is associated to the Nijenhuis tensor of the almost complex structure of the sigma model target manifold. We compute the Poisson bracket algebra of charges of the above (2,0)-and (2,2)-supersymmetric sigma models and show that it closes but it is not isomorphic to the standard (2,0) and (2,2) supersymmetry algebra, respectively. Examples of such (2,0)- and (2,2)-supersymmetric sigma models with target spaces group manifolds are also given. In addition, we study the quantisation of the (2,0)-supersymmetric sigma models, compute the anomalies of their classical symmetries and examine their cancellation. Furthermore, we examine the massive extension of (2,0)-supersymmetric sigma models with target spaces almost complex manifolds, and study the topological twist of the new supersymmetry algebras.

Solitons in supersymmetric sigma-models with torsion

We derive a bound on the energy of the general (p,q)-supersymmetric two-dimensional massive sigma model with torsion, in terms of the topological and Noether charges that appear as central charges in its supersymmetry algebra. The bound is saturated by soliton solutions of first-order Bogomol'nyi-type equations. This generalizes results obtained previously for p=q models without torsion. We give examples of massive (1,1) models with torsion that have a group manifold as a target space. We show that they generically have multiple vacua and find an explicit soliton solution of an SU(2) model. We also construct a new class of zero torsion massive (4,4) models with multiple vacua and soliton solutions. In addition, we compute the metrics on the one-soliton moduli spaces for those cases for which soliton solutions are known explicitly, and discuss their interpretation.

Massive (p,q)-supersymmetric sigma models revisited

We recently obtained the conditions on the couplings of the general two-dimensional massive sigma-model required by (p,q)-supersymmetry. Here we compute the Poisson bracket algebra of the supersymmetry and central Noether charges, and show that the action is invariant under the automorphism group of this algebra. Surprisingly, for the (4,4) case the automorphism group is always a subgroup of SO(3), rather than SO(4). We also reanalyse the conditions for the (2,2) and (4,4) supersymmetry of the zero torsion models without assumptions about the central charge matrix.

The Space of Solutions of Toda Field Theory

A new parameterisation of the solutions of Toda field theory is introduced. In this parameterisation, the solutions of the field equations are real, well-defined functions on space-time, which is taken to be two-dimensional Minkowski space or a cylinder. The global structure of the covariant phase space of Toda theory is examined and it is shown that it is isomorphic to the Hamiltonian phase space. The Poisson brackets of Toda theory are then calculated. Finally, using the methods developed to study the Toda theory, we extend these results to the non-Abelian Toda field theories.
