Entanglement dynamics: Generalized master equation for uniformly accelerated two-level systems

We propose a new form for the quantum master equation in the theory of open quantum systems. This new formalism allows one to describe the dynamics of two-level systems moving along different hyperbolic trajectories with distinct proper times. In the Born-Markov approximation, we consider a quantum massless scalar field coupled with two-level systems. Starting from a separable state we show the emergence of entanglement harvesting. For different proper accelerations we verify also the entanglement sudden death.

Boundary effects on radiative processes of two entangled atoms

We analyze radiative processes of a quantum system composed by two identical two-level atoms interacting with a massless scalar field prepared in the vacuum state in the presence of perfect reflecting flat mirrors. We consider that the atoms are prepared in a stationary maximally entangled state. We investigate the spontaneous transitions rates from the entangled states to the collective ground state induced by vacuum fluctuations. In the empty-space case, the spontaneous decay rates can be enhanced or inhibited depending on the specific entangled state and changes with the distance between the atoms. Next, we consider the presence of perfect mirrors and impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on such surfaces. In the presence of a single mirror the transition rate for the symmetric state undergoes a slight reduction, whereas for the antisymmetric state our results indicate a slightly enhancement. Finally, we investigate the effect of multiple reflections by two perfect mirrors on the transition rates.

Radiative processes of two entangled atoms outside a Schwarzschild black hole

We consider radiative processes of a quantum system composed by two identical two-level atoms in a black-hole background. We assume that these identical two-level atoms are placed at fixed radial distances outside a Schwarzschild black hole and interacting with a quantum electromagnetic field prepared in one of the usual vacuum states, namely the Boulware, Unruh or the Hartle-Hawking vacuum states. We study the structure of the rate of variation of the atomic energy. The intention is to identify in a quantitative way the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the entanglement generation between the atoms as well as the degradation of entangled states in the presence of an event horizon. We find that for a finite observation time the atoms can become entangled for the case of the field in the Boulware vacuum state, even if they are initially prepared in a separable state. In addition, the rate of variation of atomic energy is not well behaved at the event horizon due to the behavior of the proper accelerations of the atoms. We show that the thermal nature of the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh vacuum state allows the atoms to get entangled even if they were initially prepared in the separable ground state.

Radiative processes of uniformly accelerated entangled atoms

We study radiative processes of uniformly accelerated entangled atoms, interacting with an electromagnetic field prepared in the Minkowski vacuum state. We discuss the structure of the rate of variation of the atomic energy for two atoms travelling in different hyperbolic world lines. We identify the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the generation of entanglement as well as to the decay of entangled states. Our results resemble the situation in which two inertial atoms are coupled individually to two spatially separated cavities at different temperatures. In addition, for equal accelerations we obtain that one of the maximally entangled antisymmetric Bell state is a decoherence-free state.

Vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction in radiative processes of entangled states

We investigate radiative processes of inertial two-level atoms in an entangled state interacting with a quantum electromagnetic field. Our intention is to clarify and to analyze the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the decay rate of the entangled state. The possible relevance of the findings in the present work is discussed.

Casimir Energy Corrections by Light-Cone Fluctuations

We study the effects of light-cone fluctuations on the renormalized zero-point energy associated with a free massless scalar field in the presence of boundaries. In order to simulate light-cone fluctuations we introduce a space-time dependent random coefficient in the Klein-Gordon operator. We assume that the field is defined in a domain with one confined direction. For simplicity, we choose the symmetric case of two parallel plates separated by a distance $a$. The correction to the renormalized vacuum energy density between the plates goes as $1/a^{8}$ instead of the usual $1/a^{4}$ dependence for the free case. In turn we also show that light-cone fluctuations break down the vacuum pressure homogeneity between the plates.

Markovian versus non-Markovian stochastic quantization of a complex-action model

We analyze the Markovian and non-Markovian stochastic quantization methods for a complex action quantum mechanical model analog to a Maxwell-Chern-Simons eletrodynamics in Weyl gauge. We show through analytical methods convergence to the correct equilibrium state for both methods. Introduction of a memory kernel generates a non-Markovian process which has the effect of slowing down oscillations that arise in the Langevin-time evolution toward equilibrium of complex action problems. This feature of non-Markovian stochastic quantization might be beneficial in large scale numerical simulations of complex action field theories on a lattice.

One-loop effective action and the Riemann Zeros

We present a remarkable connection between the asymptotic behavior of the Riemann zeros and one-loop effective action in Euclidean scalar field theory. We show that in a two-dimensional space, the asymptotic behavior of the Fourier transform of two-point correlation functions fits the asymptotic distribution of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We work out an explicit example, namely the non-linear sigma model in the leading order in $1/N$ expansion.

Relativistic Bose-Einstein condensation with disorder

We investigate the thermodynamics of a self-interacting relativistic charged scalar field in the presence of weak disorder. We consider quenched disorder which couples linearly to the mass of the scalar field. After performing noise averages over the free energy of the system, we find that disorder increases the mean-field critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation at finite density. The effect of disorder on the temperature dependence of the chemical potential for a fixed charge density is investigated. Significant differences from the mean-field temperature dependence of the chemical potential are observed as the strength of the noise intensity increases. Finally, the temperature dependence of the chemical potential with fixed total charge and entropy is investigated. It is found that there is no Bose-Einstein condensation for a fixed charge to entropy ratio in the presence of weak disorder. The possible relevance of the findings in the present paper in different areas is discussed.

Quantum Field Theories and Prime Numbers Spectrum

The Riemann hypothesis states that all nontrivial zeros of the zeta function lie on the critical line $\Re(s)=1/2$. Hilbert and Pólya suggested a possible approach to prove it, based on spectral theory. Within this context, some authors formulated the question: is there a quantum mechanical system related to the sequence of prime numbers? In this Letter we show that such a sequence is not zeta regularizable. Therefore, there are no physical systems described by self-adjoint operators with countably infinite number of degrees of freedom with spectra given by the sequence of primes numbers.

Riemann zeta zeros and prime number spectra in quantum field theory

The Riemann hypothesis states that all nontrivial zeros of the zeta function lie in the critical line $\Re(s)=1/2$. Hilbert and Pólya suggested that one possible way to prove the Riemann hypothesis is to interpret the nontrivial zeros in the light of spectral theory. Following this approach, we discuss a necessary condition that such a sequence of numbers should obey in order to be associated with the spectrum of a linear differential operator of a system with countably infinite number of degrees of freedom described by quantum field theory. The sequence of nontrivial zeros is zeta regularizable. Then, functional integrals associated with hypothetical systems described by self-adjoint operators whose spectra is given by this sequence can be constructed. However, if one considers the same situation with primes numbers, the associated functional integral cannot be constructed, due to the fact that the sequence of prime numbers is not zeta regularizable. Finally, we extend this result to sequences whose asymptotic distributions are not "far away" from the asymptotic distribution of prime numbers.

An Analog Model for Quantum Lightcone Fluctuations in Nonlinear Optics

We propose an analog model for quantum gravity effects using nonlinear dielectrics. Fluctuations of the spacetime lightcone are expected in quantum gravity, leading to variations in the flight times of pulses. This effect can also arise in a nonlinear material. We propose a model in which fluctuations of a background electric field, such as that produced by a squeezed photon state, can cause fluctuations in the effective lightcone for probe pulses. This leads to a variation in flight times analogous to that in quantum gravity. We make some numerical estimates which suggest that the effect might be large enough to be observable.

Light-cone fluctuations and the renormalized stress tensor of a massless scalar field

We investigate the effects of light-cone fluctuations over the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of a real massless minimally coupled scalar field defined in a ($d+1$)-dimensional flat space-time with topology ${\cal R}\times {\cal S}^d$. For modeling the influence of light-cone fluctuations over the quantum field, we consider a random Klein-Gordon equation. We study the case of centered Gaussian processes. After taking into account all the realizations of the random processes, we present the correction caused by random fluctuations. The averaged renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy associated with the scalar field is presented.

Scalar Quantum Field Theory in Disordered Media

A free massive scalar field in inhomogeneous random media is investigated. The coefficients of the Klein-Gordon equation are taken to be random functions of the spatial coordinates. The case of an annealed-like disordered medium, modeled by centered stationary and Gaussian processes, is analyzed. After performing the averages over the random functions, we obtain the two-point causal Green's function of the model up to one-loop. The disordered scalar quantum field theory becomes qualitatively similar to a $λϕ^{4}$ self-interacting theory with a frequency-dependent coupling.

Thermal Radiation from a Fluctuating Event Horizon

We consider a pointlike two-level system undergoing uniformly accelerated motion. We evaluate the transition probability for a finite time interval of this system coupled to a massless scalar field near a fluctuating event horizon. Horizon fluctuations are modeled using a random noise which generates light-cone fluctuations. We study the case of centered, stationary and Gaussian random processes. The transition probability of the system is obtained from the positive-frequency Wightman function calculated to one loop order in the noise averaging process. Our results show that the fluctuating horizon modifies the thermal radiation but leaves unchanged the temperature associated with the acceleration.

Analog model for quantum gravity effects: phonons in random fluids

We describe an analog model for quantum gravity effects in condensed matter physics. The situation discussed is that of phonons propagating in a fluid with a random velocity wave equation. We consider that there are random fluctuations in the reciprocal of the bulk modulus of the system and study free phonons in the presence of Gaussian colored noise with zero mean. We show that in this model, after performing the random averages over the noise function a free conventional scalar quantum field theory describing free phonons becomes a self-interacting model.

The Bekenstein Bound in Asymptotically Free Field Theory

For spatially bounded free fields, the Bekenstein bound states that the specific entropy satisfies the inequality $\frac{S}{E} \leq 2 πR$, where $R$ stands for the radius of the smallest sphere that circumscribes the system. The validity of the Bekenstein bound on the specific entropy in the asymptotically free side of the Euclidean $(λ\,ϕ^{\,4})_{d}$ self-interacting scalar field theory is investigated. We consider the system in thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature $β^{\,-1}$ and defined in a compact spatial region without boundaries. Using the effective potential, we presented an exhaustive study of the thermodynamic of the model. For low and high temperatures the system presents a condensate. We obtain also the renormalized mean energy $E$ and entropy $S$ for the system. With these quantities, we shown in which situations the specific entropy satisfies the quantum bound.

Stochastic Quantization of Real-Time Thermal Field Theory

We use the stochastic quantization method to obtain the free scalar propagator of a finite temperature field theory formulated in Minkowski spacetime. First we use the Markovian stochastic quantization approach to present the two-point function of the theory. Second, we assume a Langevin equation with a memory kernel and Einstein's relations with colored noise. The convergence of the stochastic processes in the asymptotic limit of the Markov parameter of these Markovian and non-Markovian Langevin equations for a free scalar theory is obtained. Our formalism can be the starting point to discuss systems at finite temperature out of equilibrium.
