New limits on double-beta decay of $^{190}$Pt and $^{198}$Pt

A search for double-beta decay of $^{190}$Pt and $^{198}$Pt with emission of $γ$-ray quanta was realized at the HADES underground laboratory with a 148 g platinum sample measured by two ultralow-background HPGe detectors over 8946 h. The isotopic composition of the platinum sample has been measured with high precision using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. New lower limits for the half-lives of $^{190}$Pt relative to different channels and modes of the decays were set on the level of $\lim T_{1/2}\sim 10^{14}-10^{16}$ yr. A possible exact resonant $0νKN$ transition to the 1,2 1326.9 keV level of $^{190}$Os is limited for the first time as $T_{1/2} \geq 2.5 \times10^{16}$ yr. A new lower limit on the double-beta decay of $^{198}$Pt to the first excited level of $^{198}$Hg was set as $T_{1/2} \geq 3.2\times10^{19}$ yr, one order of magnitude higher than the limit obtained in the previous experiment.

Constraints on partial half-lives of Ce-136 and Ce-138 double electron captures

The gamma-ray emissions from a radiopure cerium-bromide crystal with a mass of 4381 g were measured for a total of 497.4 d by means of high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry in the HADES underground laboratory at a depth of 500 m.w.e. A search for 0/2nee and 0/2neb+ double beta decay transitions of Ce-136 and Ce-138 was performed using Bayesian analysis techniques. No signals were observed for a total of 35 investigated decay modes. 90% credibility limits were set in the order of 1e18-1e19 a. Existing constraints from a cerium oxide powder measurement were tested with a different cerium compound and half-life limits could be improved for most of the decay modes. The most likely accessible decay mode of the Ce-136 2nee transition into the 0+1 state of Ba-136 results in a new best 90% credibility limit of 5.0e18 a.

Decay scheme of 50V

Investigation of the $^{50}$V electron-capture to the $2^+$ 1553.8 keV level of $^{50}$Ti and search for $β^-$ decay of $^{50}$V to the $2^+$ 783.3 keV level of $^{50}$Cr (both those decays are fourfold forbidden with $ΔJ^{Δπ}=4^+$) have been performed using a vanadium sample of natural isotopic abundance with mass of 955 g. The measurements were conducted with the help of an ultra low-background HPGe-detector system located 225 m underground in the laboratory HADES (Belgium). The measured value of the half-life of $^{50}$V for electron capture was $T^{\mathrm{EC}}_{1/2}=(2.77^{+0.20}_{-0.19})\times 10^{17}$ yr. The $β^-$-decay branch was not detected and the corresponding lower bound of the half-life was $T^β_{1/2}\geq 8.9\times 10^{18}$ yr at the 90\% confidence level.

First search for $2\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilonβ^+$ decay of $^{174}$Hf

The first ever search for $2\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilonβ^+$ decay of $^{174}$Hf was realized using a high-pure sample of hafnium (with mass 179.8 g) and the ultra low-background HPGe-detector system located 225 m underground. After 75 days of data taking no indication of the double beta decay transitions could be detected but lower limits for the half-lives of the different channels and modes of the decays were set on the level of $\lim T_{1/2}\sim 10^{16}-10^{18}$ a.

First search for $α$ decays of naturally occurring Hf nuclides with emission of $γ$ quanta

The first ever search for $α$ decays to the first excited state in Yb was performed for six isotopes of hafnium (174, 176, 177, 178, 179, 180) using a high purity Hf-sample of natural isotopic abundance with a mass of 179.8 g. For $^{179}$Hf, also $α$ decay to the ground state of $^{175}$Yb was searched for thanks to the $β$-instability of the daughter nuclide $^{175}$Yb. The measurements were conducted using an ultra low-background HPGe-detector system located 225 m underground. After 75 d of data taking no decays were detected but lower bounds for the half-lives of the decays were derived on the level of $\lim T_{1/2}\sim 10^{15}-10^{18}$~a. The decay with the shortest half-life based on theoretical calculation is the decay of $^{174}$Hf to the first $2^+$ 84.3~keV excited level of $^{170}$Yb. The experimental lower bound was found to be $T_{1/2}\geq 3.3\times 10^{15}$ a.

HEROICA: an Underground Facility for the Fast Screening of Germanium Detectors

An infrastructure to characterize germanium detectors has been designed and constructed at the HADES Underground Research Laboratory, located in Mol (Belgium). Thanks to the 223m overburden of clay and sand, the muon flux is lowered by four orders of magnitude. This natural shield minimizes the exposure of radio-pure germanium material to cosmic radiation resulting in a significant suppression of cosmogenic activation in the germanium detectors. The project has been strongly motivated by a special production of germanium detectors for the GERDA experiment. GERDA, currently collecting data at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN, is searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge. In the near future, GERDA will increase its mass and sensitivity by adding new Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detectors. The production of the BEGe detectors is done at Canberra in Olen (Belgium), located about 30km from the underground test site. Therefore, HADES is used both for storage of the crystals over night, during diode production, and for the characterization measurements. A full quality control chain has been setup and tested on the first seven prototype detectors delivered by the manufacturer at the beginning of 2012. The screening capabilities demonstrate that the installed setup fulfills a fast and complete set of measurements on the diodes and it can be seen as a general test facility for the fast screening of high purity germanium detectors. The results are of major importance for a future massive production and characterization chain of germanium diodes foreseen for a possible next generation 1-tonne double beta decay experiment with 76Ge.

Search for $α$ decay of $^{151}$Eu to the first excited level of $^{147}$Pm using underground $γ$-ray spectrometry

The alpha decay of $^{151}$Eu to the first excited level of $^{147}$Pm ($J^π= 5/2^+$, $E_{exc}=91.1$ keV) was searched for at the HADES underground laboratory ($\approx 500$ m w.e.). A sample of high purity europium oxide with mass of 303 g and a natural isotopic composition has been measured over 2232.8 h with a high energy resolution ultra-low background n-type semi-planar HPGe detector (40 cm$^3$) with sub-micron deadlayer. The new improved half-life limit has been set as $T_{1/2} \geq 3.7\times 10^{18}$ yr at 68% C.L. Possibilities to improve the sensitivity of the experiment, which is already near the theoretical predictions, are discussed. New half-life limit for $α$ decay of $^{153}$Eu is also set as $T_{1/2} \geq 5.5\times 10^{17}$ yr.
