Photoproduction of $K^+Λ(1405) \rightarrow K^+π^0Σ^0$ extending to forward angles and low momentum transfer

$K^+Λ(1405)$ photoproduction has been studied at the BGOOD experiment via the all neutral decay, $Λ(1405)\rightarrowΣ^0π^0$. The unique BGOOD experimental setup allows both the cross section and $Λ(1405)$ invariant mass distribution (line shape) to be measured over a broad $K^+$ polar angle range, extending to extreme forward $K^+$ angles unattainable at previous experiments. Evidence is provided for the role of a triangle singularity driven by the $N^*(2030)$ resonance, which appears to contribute significantly to $K^+Λ(1405)$ photoproduction. This is observed in both the angular distributions and the integrated cross section which was determined with unprecedented energy resolution. The measured line shape is also in agreement with the previous results of CLAS and ANKE, and is consistent with two poles derived in $χ$PT based models.

Precision tests of Quantum Mechanics and CPT symmetry with entangled neutral kaons at KLOE

The quantum interference between the decays of entangled neutral kaons is studied in the process $ϕ\rightarrow K_S K_L \rightarrowπ^+π^-π^+π^-$, which exhibits the characteristic Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen correlations that prevent both kaons to decay into $π^+π^-$ at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon pair state, and to search for tiny decoherence and CPT violation effects, which may be justified in a quantum gravity framework. The analysed data sample was collected with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE, the Frascati $ϕ$-factory, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb$^{-1}$, i.e. to about $1.7 \times 10^9$ $ϕ\rightarrow K_S K_L$ decays produced. From the fit of the observed $Δt$ distribution, being $Δt$ the difference of the kaon decay times, the decoherence and CPT violation parameters of various phenomenological models are measured with a largely improved accuracy with respect to previous analyses. The results are consistent with no deviation from quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry, while for some parameters the precision reaches the interesting level at which -- in the most optimistic scenarios -- quantum gravity effects might show up. They provide the most stringent limits up to date on the considered models.

$K^+Λ$ photoproduction at forward angles and low momentum transfer

$γp \rightarrow K^+ Λ$ differential cross sections and recoil polarisation data from threshold for extremely forward angles are presented. The measurements were performed at the BGOOD experiment at ELSA, utilising the high angular and momentum resolution forward spectrometer for charged particle identification. The data discriminates between conflicting results in the world data set and enable extraction of the cross section as the minimum momentum transfer to the recoiling hyperon is approached.

Upper limit on the $η\toπ^{+}π^{-}$ branching fraction with the KLOE experiment

Based on an integrated luminosity of 1.61 fb$^{-1}$ $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE, the Frascati $ϕ$-factory, a search for the $P$- and $CP$-violating decay $η\toπ^{+}π^{-}$ has been performed. Radiative $ϕ\toηγ$ decay is exploited to access the $η$ mesons. No signal is observed in the $π^{+}π^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit on the branching fraction at 90\% confidence level is determined to be ${\mathcal B}(η\toπ^{+}π^{-})<4.9\times10^{-6}$, which is approximately three times smaller than the previous KLOE result. From the combination of these two measurements we get ${\mathcal B}(η\toπ^{+}π^{-}) < 4.4\times10^{-6}$ at 90\% confidence level.

Measurement of the branching fraction for the decay $K_S \to πμν$ with the KLOE detector

Based on a sample of 300 million $K_S$ mesons produced in $ϕ\to K_L K_S$ decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+e^-$ collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay $K_S \to πμν$. The $K_S$ mesons are identified by the interaction of $K_L$ mesons in the detector. The $K_S \to πμν$ decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of $K_L \to πμν$ decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds $7223 \pm 180$ signal events. Normalising to the $K_S \to π^+ π^-$ decay events the result for the branching fraction is $\mathcal{B}(K_S \to πμν) = (4.56 \pm 0.11_{\rm stat} \pm 0.17_{\rm syst})\times10^{-4}$.

MRPC Telescope Simulation for the Extreme Energy Events Experiment

A simulation tool based on GEMC framework to describe the MRPC telescope of the Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project is presented. The EEE experiment is mainly devoted to the study of the secondary cosmic muons by using MRPC telescope distributed in high schools and research centres in Italy and at CERN. This takes into account the muon interactions with EEE telescopes and the structures surrounding the experimental apparata; it consists of a dedicated event generator producing realistic muon distribution and a detailed geometry description of the detector. Microscopic behaviour of MRPCs has been included to produce experimental-like data. A method to estimate the chamber effciency directly from data has been implemented and tested by comparing the experimental and simulated polar angle distribution of muons.

Strangeness Photoproduction at the BGO-OD experiment

The BGO-OD experiment at the ELSA accelerator facility uses an energy tagged bremsstrahlung photon beam to investigate the excitation structure of the nucleon. The setup consists of a highly segmented BGO calorimeter surrounding the target, with a particle tracking magnetic spectrometer at forward angles. BGO-OD is ideal for investigating low momentum transfer processes due to the acceptance and high momentum resolution at forward angles. In particular, this enables the investigation of strangeness photoproduction where t-channel exchange mechanisms play an important role. This also allows access to low momentum exchange kinematics where extended, molecular structure may manifest in reaction mechanisms. First key results at low $t$ indicate a cusp-like structure in $K^+Σ^0$ photoproduction at $W = 1900$\,MeV, line shapes and differential cross sections for $K^+Λ$(1405)$\rightarrow K^+Σ^0π^0$, and a peak structure in $K^0_SΣ^0$ photoproduction. The peak in the $K^0_SΣ^0$ channel appears consistent with meson-baryon generated states, where equivalent models have been used to describe the $P_C$ pentaquark candidates in the heavy charmed quark sector.

Strategies to reduce the environmental impact in the MRPC array of the EEE experiment

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project employs Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) for studying the secondary cosmic ray muons in Extensive Air Showers. The array consists of about 60 tracking detectors, sparse on Italian territory and at CERN. The MRPCs are flowed with a gas mixture based on $C_2H_2F_4$ and $SF_6$, both of which are fluorinated greenhouse gases with a high environmental impact on the atmosphere. Due to the restrictions imposed by the European Union, these gases are being phased out of production and their cost is largely increasing. The EEE Collaboration started a campaign to reduce the gas emission from its array with the aim of containing costs and decreasing the experiment global warming impact. One method is to reduce the gas rate in each EEE detector. Another is to develop a gas recirculation system, whose a first prototype has been installed at one of the EEE stations located at CERN. Jointly a parallel strategy is focused on searching for environmental friendly gas mixtures which are able to substitute the standard mixture without affecting the MRPC performance. An overview and first results are presented here.

Limit on the production of a new vector boson in $\mathrm{e^+ e^-}\rightarrow {\rm U}γ$, U$\rightarrow π^+π^-$ with the KLOE experiment

The recent interest in a light gauge boson in the framework of an extra U(1) symmetry motivates searches in the mass range below 1 GeV. We present a search for such a particle, the dark photon, in ${\rm e^+ e^-}\rightarrow {\rm U}γ$, U$\rightarrow π^+π^-$ based on 28 million $\mathrm{e^+ e^-} \rightarrow π^+ π^-γ$ events collected at DA$Φ$NE by the KLOE experiment. The $π^+ π^-$ production by initial-state radiation compensates for a loss of sensitivity of previous KLOE ${\rm U} \rightarrow \mathrm{e^+ e^-}$, $μ^+μ^-$ searches due to the small branching ratios in the $ρ-ω$ resonance region. We found no evidence for a signal and set a limit at 90\% CL on the mixing strength between the photon and the dark photon, $\varepsilon^2$, in the U mass range between $527$ and $987$~MeV. Above 700 MeV this new limit is more stringent than previous ones.

Measurement of the $ϕ\to π^0 e^+e^-$ transition form factor with the KLOE detector

A measurement of the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay $ϕ\to π^0 e^+e^-$ with the KLOE experiment is presented. A sample of $\sim 9500$ signal events was selected from a data set of 1.7 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} \sim m_ϕ$ collected at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+e^-$ collider. These events were used to obtain the first measurement of the transition form factor $| F_{ϕπ^0}(q^2) |$ and a new measurement of the branching ratio of the decay: $\rm{BR}\,(ϕ\to π^0 e^+e^-) = (\,1.35 \pm 0.05^{\,\,+0.05}_{\,\,-0.10}\,) \times 10 ^{-5}$. The result improves significantly on previous measurements and is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Precision measurement of the $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ Dalitz plot distribution with the KLOE detector

Using $1.6$ fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+ e^-\toϕ\toηγ$ data collected with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE, the Dalitz plot distribution for the $η\to π^+ π^- π^0$ decay is studied with the world's largest sample of $\sim 4.7 \cdot 10^6$ events. The Dalitz plot density is parametrized as a polynomial expansion up to cubic terms in the normalized dimensionless variables $X$ and $Y$. The experiment is sensitive to all charge conjugation conserving terms of the expansion, including a $gX^2Y$ term. The statistical uncertainty of all parameters is improved by a factor two with respect to earlier measurements.

Evidence for narrow resonant structures at $W \approx 1.68$ and $W \approx 1.72$ GeV in real Compton scattering off the proton

First measurement of the beam asymmetry $Σ$ for Compton scattering off the proton in the energy range $E_γ=0.85 - 1.25$ GeV is presented. The data reveals two narrow structures at $E_γ= 1.036$ and $E_γ=1.119$ GeV. They may signal narrow resonances with masses near $1.68$ and $1.72$ GeV, or they may be generated by the sub-threshold $KΛ$ and $ωp$ production. Their decisive identification requires additional theoretical and experimental efforts.

K$^-$ absorption on two nucleons and ppK$^-$ bound state search in the $Σ^0$p final state

We report the measurement of K$^-$ absorption processes in the $Σ^0$p final state and the first exclusive measurement of the two nucleon absorption (2NA) with the KLOE detector. The 2NA process without further interactions is found to be 12\% of the sum of all other contributing processes, including absorption on three and more nucleons or 2NA followed by final state interactions with the residual nucleons. We also determine the possible contribution of the ppK$^-$ bound state to the $Σ^0$p final state. A yield of ppK$^- /\mathrm{K^-_{stop}}$ is found to be $(0.044 \pm 0.009\, stat ^{+ 0.004} _{- 0.005} \,syst) \cdot 10^{-2}$ but its statistical significance based on an F-test is only 1$σ$.

Limit on the production of a low-mass vector boson in $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-} \to \mathrm{U}γ$, $\mathrm{U} \to \mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$ with the KLOE experiment

The existence of a new force beyond the Standard Model is compelling because it could explain several striking astrophysical observations which fail standard interpretations. We searched for the light vector mediator of this dark force, the $\mathrm{U}$ boson, with the KLOE detector at the DA$Φ$NE $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$ collider. Using an integrated luminosity of 1.54 fb$^{-1}$, we studied the process $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-} \to \mathrm{U}γ$, with $\mathrm{U} \to \mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$, using radiative-return to search for a resonant peak in the dielectron invariant-mass distribution. We did not find evidence for a signal, and set a 90\%~CL upper limit on the mixing strength between the Standard Model photon and the dark photon, $\varepsilon^2$, at $10^{-6}$--$10^{-4}$ in the 5--520~MeV/c$^2$ mass range.

First measurement of the 2.4 and 2.9 MeV $^6$He three-cluster resonant states via the $^3$H($^4$He,p$α$)2n four-body reaction

Two new low-lying $^6$He levels at excitation energies of about 2.4 and 2.9 MeV were observed in the experimental investigation of the p-$α$ coincidence spectra obtained by the $^3$H($^4$He,p$α$)2n four-body reaction at $E_{\rm \,^4He}$ beam energy of 27.2 MeV. The relevant $E^*$ peak energy and $Γ$ energy width spectroscopic parameters for such $^6$He$^*$ excited states decaying into the $α$+n+n channel were obtained by analyzing the bidimensional ($E_{\rm p}$, $E_{\rm α}$) energy spectra. The present new result of two low-lying $^6$He$^*$ excited states above the $^4$He+2n threshold energy of 0.974 MeV is important for the investigation of the nuclear structure of neutron rich light nuclei and also as a basic test for theoretical models in the study of the three-cluster resonance feature of $^6$He.

Study of Dalitz decay phi -> eta e+e- with KLOE detector

We have studied the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay phi -> eta e+e-, with eta -> pi0pi0pi0, with the KLOE detector at DAPHNE. The data set of 1.7 fb-1 of e+e- collisions at sqrt(s)~Mphi contains a clear conversion decay signal of ~31,000 events from which we measured a value of BR(phi -> eta e+e-)=(1.075+-0.007+-0.038)x10-4. The same sample is used to determine the transition form factor by a fit to the e+e- invariant mass spectrum, obtaining b(phi eta) =(1.17 +- 0.10 + 0.07) GeV-2, that improves by a factor of five the precision of the previous measurement and is in good agreement with VMD expectations.

Test of CPT and Lorentz symmetry in entangled neutral kaons with the KLOE experiment

Neutral kaon pairs produced in phi decays in anti-symmetric entangled state can be exploited to search for violation of CPT symmetry and Lorentz invariance. We present an analysis of the CP-violating process phi->K_S K_L->pi+pi-pi+pi- based on 1.7 fb-1 of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the Frascati phi-factory DAFNE. The data are used to perform a measurement of the CPT-violating parameters Delta_amu for neutral kaons in the contest of the Standard Model Extension framework. The parameters measured in the reference frame of the fixed stars are: Delta_ao = (-6.0 +- 7.7_{stat} +- 3.1_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_ax = ( 0.9 +- 1.5_{stat} +- 0.6_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_ay = (-2.0 +- 1.5_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_az = ( 3.1 +- 1.7_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV These are presently the most precise measurements in the quark sector of the Standard Model Extension.

A new limit on the CP violating decay KS -> 3pi0 with the KLOE experiment

We have carried out a new direct search for the CP violating decay KS -> 3pi0 with 1.7 fb^-1 of e+e- collisions collected by the KLOE detector at the phi-factory DAFNE. We have searched for this decay in a sample of about 5.9 x 10^8 KS KL events tagging the KS by means of the KL interaction in the calorimeter and requiring six prompt photons. With respect to our previous search, the analysis has been improved by increasing of a factor four the tagged sample and by a more effective background rejection of fake KS tags and spurious clusters. We find no candidates in data and simulated background samples, while we expect 0.12 standard model events. Normalizing to the number of KS -> 2pi0 events in the same sample, we set the upper limit on BR(KS -> 3pi0 < 2.6 x 10^-8 at 90% C.L., five times lower than the previous limit. We also set the upper limit on the eta_000 parameter, |eta_000 | < 0.0088 at 90% C.L., improving by a factor two the latest direct measurement.

IRIDE White Book, An Interdisciplinary Research Infrastructure based on Dual Electron linacs&lasers

This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. IRIDE is also intended to be realized in subsequent stages of development depending on the assigned priorities.

Limit on the production of a light vector gauge boson in phi meson decays with the KLOE detector

We present a new limit on the production of a light dark-force mediator with the KLOE detector at DAPHNE. This boson, called U, has been searched for in the decay phi --> eta U, U --> e+ e-, analyzing the decay eta --> pi0 pi0 pi0 in a data sample of 1.7 fb-1. No structures are observed in the e+e- invariant mass distribution over the background. This search is combined with a previous result obtained from the decay eta --> pi+ pi- pi0, increasing the sensitivity. We set an upper limit at 90% C.L. on the ratio between the U boson coupling constant and the fine structure constant of alpha'/alpha < 1.7x10^-5 for 30<M_U<400 MeV and alpha'/alpha < 8x10^-6 for the sub-region 50<M_U<210 MeV. This result assumes the Vector Meson Dominance expectations for the phietagamma^* transition form factor. The dependence of this limit on the transition form factor has also been studied.

Measurement of the Σ beam asymmetry for the ω photo-production off the proton and the neutron at GRAAL

We report on new measurements of the beam asymmetry for ω photo-production on proton and neutron in Hydrogen and Deuterium targets from the GRAAL collaboration. The beam asymmetry values are extracted from the reaction threshold (E_γ = 1.1 GeV in the free nucleon kinematics) up to 1.5 GeV of incoming photon energy. For the first time both the radiative and the three-pion decay channels are simultaneously investigated on the free proton. Results from the two decay channels are in agreement and provide important constraints for the determination of resonant state contributions to the ω production mechanism. First experimental results on the deuteron allow the extraction of the Σ beam asymmetry on quasi-free nucleons. Comparison of the results for free and quasi-free kinematics on the proton shows a generally reasonable agreement, similar to the findings in pseudo-scalar meson photo-production reactions. For the first time measurements on quasi-free neutrons are available, showing that both the strength and the angular distributions of the beam asymmetry are sensibly different from the results on the proton target.

Precision measurement of $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-γ)/σ(e^+e^-\rightarrow μ^+μ^-γ)$ and determination of the $π^+π^-$ contribution to the muon anomaly with the KLOE detector

We have measured the ratio $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-γ)/σ(e^+e^-\rightarrow μ^+μ^-γ)$, with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE for a total integrated luminosity of $\sim$ 240 pb$^{-1}$. From this ratio we obtain the cross section $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-)$. From the cross section we determine the pion form factor $|F_π|^2$ and the two-pion contribution to the muon anomaly $a_μ$ for $0.592<M_{ππ}<0.975$ GeV, $Δ^{ππ} a_μ$= $({\rm 385.1\pm1.1_{stat}\pm2.7_{sys+theo}})\times10^{-10}$. This result confirms the current discrepancy between the Standard Model calculation and the experimental measurement of the muon anomaly.

Recent results on hadron physics at KLOE

One of the basic motivations of the KLOE and KLOE-2 collaborations is the test of fundamental symmetries and the search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model via the hadronic and leptonic decays of ground-state mesons and via their production in the fusion of virtual gamma quanta exchanged between colliding electrons and positrons. This contribution includes brief description of results of recent analysis of the KLOE data aimed at (i) the search for the dark matter boson, (ii) determination of the hadronic and light-by-light contributions to the g-2 muon anomaly and (iii) tests of QCD anomalies.

Experimental evidence of the $^6$He level at $E^*$ = 18.3 MeV by the $^4$He+$^3$H three-body reaction

Measurements of the t-t and p-t coincidence events in the $^3$H ($α$, ttp) reaction have been obtained at $E_α$ incident energy of 67.2 MeV. Various appropriate angular configurations of detectors were chosen in order to observe the population of the $^6$He$^*$ state at around 18 MeV. Its contribution appears at the $E_{\rm tt}$ relative energy of 6.0 MeV by the analysis of bidimensional spectra. We found the formation of the $^6$He excited state at $E^* = 18.3 \pm 0.2$ MeV (with a $Γ$ width of 1.1 $\pm$ 0.3 MeV) by the decay into the t+t binary channel, since the threshold energy of the t+t channel is 12.31 MeV. In each analyzed bidimensional energy spectrum of ($E_{\rm t}$, $E_{\rm t}$) and ($E_{\rm p}$, $E_{\rm t}$) coincidence events resonance structures are present due to the formation of both $^6$He$^*$ and $^4$He$^*$ excited states. Our results on the $E^*$ and $Γ$ values regarding the $^6$He$^*$ level of about 18 MeV are compared with the results obtained by other reactions. Moreover, we also found new $Γ$ width values of 0.7 $\pm$ 0.3 and 0.8 $\pm$ 0.4 MeV for the 14.0 $\pm$ 0.4 and 16.1 $\pm$ 0.4 MeV $^6$He levels, respectively.

Investigation on the 48Ca+249-252Cf reactions synthesizing isotopes of the superheavy element 118

The study of the $^{48}$Ca+$^{249,250,251,252}$Cf reactions in a wide energy interval around the external barrier has been achieved with the aim of investigating the dynamical effects of the entrance channel via the $^{48}$Ca induced reactions on the $^{249-252}$Cf targets and to analyze the influence of odd and even neutron composition in target on the capture, quasifission and fusion cross sections. Measurement of Γ(η-> π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η-> π^+π^-π^0) with the KLOE Detector

The ratio R_η=Γ(η-> π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η-> π^+π^-π^0) has been measured by analyzing 22 million ϕ\to ηγdecays collected by the KLOE experiment at DA\PhiNE, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb^{-1}. The η\to π^+π^-γproceeds both via the ρresonant contribution, and possibly a non-resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. Our result, R_η= 0.1856\pm 0.0005_{stat} \pm 0.0028_{syst}, points out a sizable contribution of the direct term to the total width. The di-pion invariant mass for the η-> π^+π^-γdecay could be described in a model-independent approach in terms of a single free parameter, α. Measurement of η meson production in γγ interactions and Γ(η-->γγ) with the KLOE detector

We present a measurement of η meson production in photon-photon interactions produced by electron-positron beams colliding with \sqrt{s}=1 GeV. The measurement is done with the KLOE detector at the ϕ-factory DAΦNE with an integrated luminosity of 0.24 fb^{-1}. The e^+e^- --> e^+e^-η cross section is measured without detecting the outgoing electron and positron, selecting the decays η-->π^+π^-π^0 and η-->π^0π^0π^0. The most relevant background is due to e^+e^- --> ηγ when the monochromatic photon escapes detection. The cross section for this process is measured as σ(e^+e^- -->ηγ) = (856 \pm 8_{stat} \pm 16_{syst}) pb. The combined result for the e^+e^- -->e^+e^-η cross section is σ(e^+e^- -->e^+e^-η) = (32.72 \pm 1.27_{stat} \pm 0.70_{syst}) pb. From this we derive the partial width Γ(η-->γγ) = (520 \pm 20_{stat} \pm 13_{syst}) eV. This is in agreement with the world average and is the most precise measurement to date.

What perspectives for the synthesis of heavier superheavy nuclei? Results and comparison with models

The possibility to synthesize heavier superheavy elements in massive nuclei reactions is strongly limited by the hindrance to complete fusion of reacting nuclei: due to the onset of the quasifission process in the entrance channel, which competes with complete fusion, and by strong increase of the fission yield along the de-excitation cascade of the compound nucleus in comparison to the evaporation residue formation. We present a wide and detailed procedure allowing us to describe the experimental results (evaporation residue nuclei and fissionlike products) in the mass asymmetric and symmetric reactions. Very reliable estimations and perspectives for the synthesis of superheavy elements in many massive nuclei reactions up to Z = 120 and eventually also for Z > 120 have been obtained.

Dynamics of dinuclear system formation and its decay in heavy ion collisions

A variety of phenomena connected with the formation of a dinuclear complex is observed in the heavy ion collisions at low energies. The dinuclear system model allows us to analyze the experimental data and to interpret them by comparison of the partial capture, fusion and evaporation residue cross sections measured for the different reactions leading to the same compound nucleus. The comparison of theoretical and experimental values of the mass and angular distributions of the reaction products gives us a detailed information about reaction mechanism forming the observed yields. The observed very small cross sections of the evaporation residues may be explained by the strong fusion hindrance and/or instability of the heated and rotating compound nucleus and smallness of its survival probability. The fusion hindrance arises due to competition between complete fusion and quasifission while the smallness of survival probability is connected with the decrease of the fission barrier at large excitation energy and angular momentum of compound nucleus.

Effects of the entrance channel and fission barrier in synthesis of superheavy element $Z$=120

The fusion and evaporation residue cross sections for the $^{50}$Ti+$^{249}$Cf and $^{54}$Cr+$^{248}$Cm reactions calculated by the combined dinuclear system and advanced statistical models are compared. These reactions are considered to be used to synthesize the heaviest superheavy element. The $^{50}$Ti+$^{249}$Cf reaction is more mass asymmetric than $^{54}$Cr+$^{248}$Cm and the fusion excitation function for the former reaction is higher than the one for the latter reaction. The evaporation residue excitation functions for the mass asymmetric reaction is higher in comparison with the one of the $^{54}$Cr+$^{248}$Cm reaction. The use of the mass values of superheavy nuclei calculated in the framework of the macroscopic-microscopic model by the Warsaw group leads to smaller evaporation residue cross section for both the reactions in comparison with the case of using the masses calculated by Peter Möller {\it et al}. The $^{50}$Ti+$^{249}$Cf reaction is more favorable in comparison with the $^{54}$Cr+$^{248}$Cm reaction: the maximum values of the excitation function of the 3n-channel of the evaporation residue formation for the $^{50}$Ti+$^{249}$Cf and $^{54}$Cr+$^{248}$Cm reactions are about 0.1 and 0.07 pb, respectively, but the yield of the 4n-channel for the former reaction is lower (0.004 pb) in comparison with the one (0.01 pb) for the latter reaction.

The experimental fission excitation function is obtained. The fragment angular anisotropy ($\mathcal{A}_{\rm exp}$) is found by extrapolating the each fission angular distributions. The measured fission cross sections of the $^{32}$S+$^{182,184}$W reaction are decomposed into fusion-fission, quasifission and fast fission contributions by the dinuclear system model. The total evaporation residue excitation function for the $^{32}$S+$^{184}$W reaction calculated in the framework of the advanced statistical model is in good agreement with the available experimental data up to about $E_{\rm c.m.}\approx 160$ MeV. The theoretical descriptions of the experimental capture excitation functions for both reactions and quantities $K_0^2$, $<\ell^2>$ and $\mathcal{A}_{\rm exp}$ which characterize angular distributions of the fission products were performed by the same partial capture cross sections at the considered range of beam energy.

Limits on light-speed anisotropies from Compton scattering of high-energy electrons

The possibility of anisotropies in the speed of light relative to the limiting speed of electrons is considered. The absence of sidereal variations in the energy of Compton-edge photons at the ESRF's GRAAL facility constrains such anisotropies representing the first non-threshold collision-kinematics study of Lorentz violation. When interpreted within the minimal Standard-Model Extension, this result yields the two-sided limit of 1.6 x 10^{-14} at 95% confidence level on a combination of the parity-violating photon and electron coefficients kappa_{o+} and c. This new constraint provides an improvement over previous bounds by one order of magnitude.

Mechanisms producing fissionlike binary fragments in heavy collisions

The mixing of the quasifission component to the fissionlike cross section causes ambiguity in the quantitative estimation of the complete fusion cross section from the observed angular and mass distributions of the binary products. We show that the partial cross section of quasifission component of binary fragments covers the whole range of the angular momentum values leading to capture. The calculated angular momentum distributions for the compound nucleus and dinuclear system going to quasifission may overlap: competition between complete fusion and quasifission takes place at all values of initial orbital angular momentum. Quasifission components formed at large angular momentum of the dinuclear system can show isotropic angular distribution and their mass distribution can be in mass symmetric region similar to the characteristics of fusion-fission components. As result the unintentional inclusion of the quasifission contribution into the fusion-fission fragment yields can lead to overestimation of the probability of the compound nucleus formation.

Quasifission and difference in formation of evaporation residues in the $^{16}$O+$^{184}$W and $^{19}$F+$^{181}$Ta reactions

The excitation functions of capture, complete fusion, and evaporation residue formation in the $^{16}$O+$^{184}$W and $^{19}$F+$^{181}$Ta reactions leading to the same $^{200}$Pb compound nucleus has been studied theoretically to explain the experimental data showing more intense yield of evaporation residue in the former reaction in comparison with that in the latter reaction. The observed difference is explained by large capture cross section in the former and by increase of the quasifission contribution to the yield of fission-like fragments in the $^{19}$F+$^{181}$Ta reaction at large excitation energies. The probability of compound nucleus formation in the $^{16}$O+$^{184}$W reaction is larger but compound nuclei formed in both reactions have similar angular momentum ranges at the same excitation energy. The observed decrease of evaporation residue cross section normalized to the fusion cross section in the $^{19}$F+$^{181}$Ta reaction in comparison with the one in the $^{16}$O+$^{184}$W reaction at high excitation energies is explained by the increase of hindrance in the formation of compound nucleus connected with more quick increase of the quasifission contribution in the $^{19}$F induced reaction. The spin distributions of the evaporation residue cross sections for the two reactions are also presented.
