Coupling of magnetic and optomechanical structuring in cold atoms

Self-organized phases in cold atoms as a result of light-mediated interactions can be induced by coupling to internal or external degrees of the atoms. There has been growing interest in the interaction of internal spin degrees of freedom with the optomechanical dynamics of the external centre-of-mass motion. We present a model for the coupling between magnetic and optomechanical structuring in a $J=1/2 \to J'=3/2$ system in a single-mirror feedback scheme, being representative for a larger class of diffractively coupled systems such as longitudinally pumped cavities and counter-propagating beam schemes. For negative detunings, a linear stability analysis demonstrates that optical pumping and optomechanical driving cooperate to create magnetic ordering. However, for long-period transmission gratings the magnetic driving will strongly dominate the optomechanical driving, unless one operates very close to the existence range of the magnetic instability. At small lattice periods, in particular at wavelength-scale periods, the optomechanical driving will dominate.

Three-dimensional simulations of spatiotemporal instabilities in a magneto-optical trap

Large clouds of atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) are known to exhibit spatiotemporal instabilities when the frequency of the trapping lasers comes close to the atomic resonance. Such instabilities possess similarities with stars and confined plasmas, where corresponding nonlinearities may give rise to spontaneous oscillations. In this paper, we describe the kinetic model that has recently been employed in three-dimensional (3D) simulations of spatiotemporal instabilities in a MOT, yielding qualitative agreements with experimentally observed instability thresholds and regimes. Details surrounding its implementation are included, and the impact of its physical effects on the instabilities is investigated to improve the understanding of the complex mechanism at work.

Analysis of pattern forming instabilities in an ensemble of two-level atoms optically excited by counter-propagating fields

We explore various models for the pattern forming instability in a laser-driven cloud of cold two-level atoms with a plane feedback mirror. Focus is on the combined treatment of nonlinear propagation in a diffractively thick medium and the boundary condition given by feedback. The combined presence of purely transverse transmission gratings and reflection gratings on wavelength scale is addressed. Different truncation levels of the Fourier expansion of the dielectric susceptibility in terms of these gratings are discussed and compared to literature. A formalism to calculate the exact solution for the homogenous state in presence of absorption is presented. The relationship between the counterpropagating beam instability and the feedback instability is discussed. Feedback reduces the threshold by a factor of two under optimal conditions. Envelope curves which bound all possible threshold curves for varying mirror distances are calculated. The results are comparing well to experimental results regarding the observed length scales and threshold conditions. It is clarified where the assumption of a diffractively thin medium is justified.

Optical pattern formation with a 2-level nonlinearity

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of spontaneous pattern formation in the transverse section of a single retro-reflected laser beam passing through a cloud of cold Rubidium atoms. In contrast to previously investigated systems, the nonlinearity at work here is that of a 2-level atom, which realizes the paradigmatic situation considered in many theoretical studies of optical pattern formation. In particular, we are able to observe the disappearance of the patterns at high intensity due to the intrinsic saturable character of 2-level atomic transitions.

Observation of coherent backscattering of light by cold atoms

Coherent backscattering (CBS) of light waves by a random medium is a signature of interference effects in multiple scattering. This effect has been studied in many systems ranging from white paint to biological tissues. Recently, we have observed CBS from a sample of laser-cooled atoms, a scattering medium with interesting new properties. In this paper we discuss various effects, which have to be taken into account for a quantitative study of coherent backscattering of light by cold atoms.
