Microscopic investigation of magnetic and antimagnetic rotational motion in atomic nuclei

In the present work, we have generalized the projected shell model (PSM) approach to include the quasiparticle excitations from two major oscillator shells, and have also extended the basis space to five-quasiparticle configurations for odd-mass nuclei. The magnetic and antimagnetic rotational structures observed in odd-neutron Pd- and Cd-isotopes have been investigated as a first major application of the new development. It is shown that PSM approach provides a reasonable description of the observed properties of magnetic and antimagnetic rotational bands.

Extended triaxial projected shell model approach for odd-neutron nuclei

In an effort to elucidate the rich band structures observed in odd-neutron systems, triaxial projected shell model approach is extended to include three-quasineutron and five-quasiparticle configurations. This extension makes it possible to investigate the high-spin states up to and including the second band crossing. Detailed investigation has been performed for odd-mass Xe isotopes with the extended basis, and it is shown that character of the band crossing along the yrast line changes with shell filling of the 1h11/2 orbital. Further, it is observed that the three-quasiparticle state that crosses the ground-state configuration, leading to the normal band crossing phenomenon along the yrast line, first crosses the γ band based on the ground-state configuration at an earlier spin value. This crossing feature explains the occurrence of the signature inversion observed in the γ bands for some of the studied isotopes.

High-Spin Doublet Band Structures in odd-odd $^{194-200}$Tl isotopes

The basis space in the triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach is generalized for odd-odd nuclei to include two-neutron and two-proton configurations on the basic one-neutron coupled to one-proton quasiparticle state. The generalization allows to investigate odd-odd nuclei beyond the band crossing region and as a first application of this development, high-spin band structures recently observed in odd-odd $^{194-200}$Tl isotopes are investigated. In some of these isotopes, the doublet band structures observed after the band crossing have been conjectured to arise from the spontaneous breaking of the chiral symmetry. The driving configuration of the chiral symmetry in these odd-odd isotopes is one-proton and three-neutrons rather than the basic one-proton and one-neutron as already observed in many other nuclei. It is demonstrated using the TPSM approach that energy differences of the doublet bands in $^{194}$Tl and $^{198}$Tl are, indeed, small. However, the differences in the calculated transition probabilities are somewhat larger than what is expected in the chiral symmetry limit. Experimental data on the transition probabilities is needed to shed light on the chiral nature of the doublet bands.

Quasi-$γ$ band in $^{\text{114}}$Te

The low-lying non-yrast states in $^{114}$Te have been investigated using the Indian National Gamma Array through the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{112}$Sn($^{4}$He, 2n) at a beam energy of 37 MeV. Eight new $γ$-transitions have been placed in the level scheme to establish the quasi-$γ$ band in this nucleus. Spin and parity of several excited states have been assigned from the present spectroscopy measurements. The comparison of experimental results on the observed bands with the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) and Triaxial Projected Shell Model (TPSM) confirming the existence of the quasi-$γ$ band structure in the $^{114}$Te nucleus.

Observation of a $γ$-band based on two-quasiparticle configuration in $^{70}$Ge

The structure of $^{70}$Ge has been studied through in-beam gamma ray spectroscopy. A new band structure is identified that leads to forking of the ground-state band into two excited bands. Band structures have been investigated using the microscopic triaxial projected shell model approach. The observed forking is demonstrated to result from almost simultaneous band crossing of the two neutron aligned and the γ-band built on this two-quasiparticle configuration with the ground-state band.

High Spin Spectroscopy and Shape Evolution in 105Cd

High spin states in 105Cd were studied using 16O beam on 92Mo reaction at an incident beam energy of 75 MeV. The level scheme of 105Cd has been observed up to an excitation energy of 10.8 MeV with the addition of 30 new gamma transitions to the previous work. Spin and parity for most of the reported levels are assigned from the DCO ratios and linear polarization measurements. The microscopic origin of the investigated band structures is discussed in the context of triaxial projected shell model. The energies of observed positive and negative parity bands agree with the predictions of the TPSM by considering triaxial deformation for the observed excited band structures. The shape evolution with increasing angular momentum is explained in the framework of Cranked Shell Model and the Total Routhian Surface calculations.

Microscopic nuclear structure models and methods : Chiral symmetry, Wobbling motion and $γ-$bands

A systematic investigation of the nuclear observables related to the triaxial degree of freedom is presented using the multi-quasiparticle triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach. These properties correspond to the observation of $γ$-bands, chiral doublet bands and the wobbling mode. In the TPSM approach, $γ$-bands are built on each quasiparticle configuration and it is demonstrated that some observations in high-spin spectroscopy that have remained unresolved for quite some time could be explained by considering $γ$-bands based on two-quasiparticle configurations. It is shown in some Ce-, Nd- and Ge-isotopes that the two observed aligned or s-bands originate from the same intrinsic configuration with one of them as the $γ$-band based on a two-quasiparticle configuration. In the present work, we have also performed a detailed study of $γ$-bands observed up to the highest spin in Dysposium, Hafnium, Mercury and Uranium isotopes. Furthermore, several measurements related to chiral symmetry breaking and wobbling motion have been reported recently. These phenomena, which are possible only for triaxial nuclei, have been investigated using the TPSM approach. It is shown that doublet bands observed in lighter odd-odd Cs-isotopes can be considered as candidates for chiral symmetry breaking. Transverse wobbling motion recently observed in $^{135}$Pr has also been investigated and it is shown that TPSM approach provides a reasonable description of the measured properties.

Unified description of rotational-, $γ$-, and quasiparticle-band structures in neutron-rich mass $\sim$ 110 region

Band structures of the neutron-rich Mo- and Ru-isotopes around A $\sim $ 110 are investigated using the triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach employing multi-quasiparticle configuration space. The mass region under investigation depicts a rich variety of band structures with well developed $γ$- and $γγ$-bands, and quasiparticle excitations based on them. It is demonstrated that TPSM provides a reasonable description of most of the observed properties, in particular, detailed structure variations observed in Mo-isotopes are well reproduced in the present work.

Nature of $γ$-deformation in Ge and Se nuclei and the triaxial projected shell model description

Recent experimental data have demonstrated that $^{76}$Ge may be a rare example of a nucleus exhibiting rigid $γ$-deformation in the low-spin regime. In the present work, the experimental analysis is supported by microscopic calculations using the multi-quasiparticle triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach. It is shown that to best describe the data of both yrast and $γ$-vibrational bands in $^{76}$Ge, a rigid-triaxial deformation parameter $γ\approx 30^\circ$ is required. TPSM calculations are discussed in conjunction with the experimental observations and also with the published results from the spherical shell model. The occurrence of a $γγ$-band in $^{76}$Ge is predicted with the bandhead at an excitation energy of $ \sim$ 2.5 MeV. We have also performed TPSM study for the neighboring Ge- and Se-isotopes and the distinct $γ$-soft feature in these nuclei is shown to result from configuration mixing of the ground-state with multi-quasiparticle states.

Exploring the origin of degenerate doublet bands in $^{106}$Ag

The electromagnetic transition probabilities of the excited levels for the two nearly degenerate bands of $^{106}$Ag have been measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. A comparison with the calculated values using triaxial projected shell model approach indicates that these bands originate from two different quasi-particle configurations but constructed from the same mean-field deformation.

Investigation of doublet-bands in $^{124,126,130,132}$Cs odd-odd nuclei using triaxial projected shell model approach

Doublet bands observed in $^{124,126,130,132}$Cs isotopes are studied using the recently developed multi-quasiparticle microscopic triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach. It is shown that TPSM results for energies and transition probabilities are in good agreement with known energies and the recently measured extensive data on transition probabilities for the bands in $^{126}$Cs. In particular, it is demonstrated that characteristics transition probabilities expected for the doublet bands to originate from the chiral symmetry breaking are well reproduced in the present work. The calculated energies for $^{124,130,132}$Cs are also shown to be in reasonable agreement with the available experimental data. Furthermore, a complete set of the calculated transition probabilities is provided for the doublet bands in $^{124,130,132}$Cs isotopes.

Microscopic study of chiral rotation in odd-odd A $\sim$ 100 nuclei

A systematic study of the doublet bands observed in odd-odd mass $\sim$ 100 is performed using the microscopic triaxial projected shell model approach. This mass region has depicted some novel features which are not observed in other mass regions, for instance, it has been observed that two chiral bands cross diabatically in $^{106}$Ag. It is demonstrated that this unique feature is due to crossing of the two 2-quasiparticle configurations having different intrinsic structures. Further, we provide a complete set of transition probabilities for all the six-isotopes studied in this work and it is shown that the predicted transitions are in good agreement with the available experimental data.

Mixing of quasiparticle excitations and gamma-vibrations in transitional nuclei

Evidence of strong coupling of quasiparticle excitations with gamma-vibration is shown to occur in transitional nuclei. High-spin band structures in [166,168,170,172]Er are studied by employing the recently developed multi-quasiparticle triaxial projected shell model approach. It is demonstrated that a low-lying K=3 band observed in these nuclei, the nature of which has remained unresolved, originates from the angular-momentum projection of triaxially deformed two-quasiparticle (qp) configurations. Further, it is predicted that the structure of this band depends critically on the shell filling: in [166]Er the lowest K=3 2-qp band is formed from proton configuration, in [168]Er the K=3 neutron and proton 2-qp bands are almost degenerate, and for [170]Er and [172]Er the neutron K=3 2-qp band becomes favored and can cross the gamma-vibrational band at high rotational frequencies. We consider that these are few examples in even-even nuclei, where the three basic modes of rotational, vibrational, and quasi-particle excitations co-exist close to the yrast line.

Triaxial projected shell model study of chiral rotation in odd-odd nuclei

Chiral rotation observed in $^{128}$Cs is studied using the newly developed microscopic triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach. The observed energy levels and the electromagnetic transition probabilities of the nearly degenerate chiral dipole bands in this isotope are well reproduced by the present model. This demonstrates the broad applicability of the TPSM approach, based on a schematic interaction and angular-momentum projection technique, to explain a variety of low- and high-spin phenomena in triaxial rotating nuclei.

Multi-phonon $γ$-vibrational bands in odd-mass nuclei studied by triaxial projected shell model approach

Inspired by the recent experimental data (Phys. Lett. B {\bf 675} (2009) 420), we extend the triaxial projected shell model approach to study the $γ$-band structure in odd-mass nuclei. As a first application of the new development, the $γ$-vibrational structure of $^{103}$Nb is investigated. It is demonstrated that the model describes the ground-state band and multi-phonon $γ$-vibrations quite satisfactorily, supporting the interpretation of the data as one of the few experimentally-known examples of simultaneous occurrence of one- and two-$γ$-phonon vibrational bands. This generalizes the well-known concept of the surface $γ$-oscillation in deformed nuclei built on the ground-state in even-even systems to $γ$-bands based on quasiparticle configurations in odd-mass systems.

preprint2009arXiv

Multi-quasiparticle gamma-band structure in neutron-deficient Ce and Nd isotopes

The newly developed multi-quasiparticle triaxial projected shell-model approach is employed to study the high-spin band structures in neutron-deficient even-even Ce- and Nd-isotopes. It is observed that gamma-bands are built on each intrinsic configuration of the triaxial mean-field deformation. Due to the fact that a triaxial configuration is a superposition of several K-states, the projection from these states results in several low-lying bands originating from the same intrinsic configuration. This generalizes the well-known concept of the surface gamma-oscillation in deformed nuclei based on the ground-state to gamma-bands built on multi-quasiparticle configurations. This new feature provides an alternative explanation on the observation of two I=10 aligning states in 134Ce and both exhibiting a neutron character.
