Pressure effect on magnetic susceptibility of SmS in semiconducting phase: experimental study

Magnetic susceptibility χχ of the polycrystalline sample of samarium monosulfide was measured as a function of the hydrostatic pressure PP up to 2 kbar at liquid nitrogen and room temperatures using a pendulum-type magnetometer. A pronounced magnitude of the pressure effect is found to be positive in sign and strongly temperature dependent: the pressure derivatives of χχ, d\,lnχχ/dPP, are 6.3±0.56.3\pm0.5 and 14.2±114.2\pm1 Mbar−1^{-1} at 300 and 78 K, respectively. The obtained experimental results are discussed within phenomenological approaches.

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of FeTe, BiFeO3_3, SrFe12_{12}O19_{19} and SrCoTiFe10_{10}O19_{19} compounds

The electronic energy structures and magnetic properties of iron-based compounds with group VI elements (FeTe, BiFeO3_3, SrFe12_{12}O19_{19} and SrCoTiFe10_{10}O19_{19}) are studied using the density functional theory (DFT) methods. Manifestations of different types of chemical bonds in magnetism of these compounds are studied theoretically. Calculations of electronic structures of these systems were performed using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for description of the exchange and correlation effects within DFT. For SrFe12_{12}O19_{19} and SrCoTiFe10_{10}O19_{19} hexaferrites the GGA+UU method was also employed to deal with strongly correlated 3dd-electrons. The calculations have revealed distinctive features of electronic structure of the investigated iron-based compounds with strongly correlated 3dd-electrons, which can be responsible for their peculiar structural and magnetic properties.

Magnetic properties of Mn-doped Bi2_2Se3_3 compound: temperature dependence and pressure effects

Magnetic susceptibility χχ of Bi2−x_{2-x}Mnx_{x}Se3_3 (x=0.01−0.2x = 0.01-0.2) was measured in the temperature range 4.2−3004.2-300 K. For all the samples, a Curie-Weiss behaviour of χ(T)χ(T) was revealed with effective magnetic moments of Mn ions corresponding to the spin value S=5/2, which couple antiferromagnetically with the paramagnetic Curie temperature Θ∼−50Θ\sim -50 K. In addition, for the samples of nominal composition xx = 0.1 and 0.2 the effect of a hydrostatic pressure PP up to 2 kbar on χχ has been measured at fixed temperatures 78 and 300 K that allowed to estimate the pressure derivative of ΘΘ to be dΘΘ/dP∼−0.8P\sim-0.8 K/kbar. Based on the observed behaviour of ΘΘ with varied Mn concentration and pressure, a possible mechanism of interaction between localized Mn moments is discussed.

Electronic Structure and Properties of Novel Layered Superconductors

The electronic energy structures and magnetic properties of layered superconductors RRNi2_2B2_2C, RRFe4_4Al8_8 and FeSe are systematically studied, by using the density functional theory (DFT). The calculations allowed us to reveal a number of features of the electronic structure, which can cause the manifestation of peculiar structural, magnetic and superconducting properties of these systems. It is demonstrated that the Fermi energy EFE_{\rm F} is located close to the pronounced peaks of the electronic density of states (DOS). The main contribution to DOS at the Fermi level arises from 3d3d-electrons. The calculations of the pressure-dependent electronic structure and the magnetic susceptibility in the normal state indicate that the novel superconductors are very close to a magnetic instability with dominating spin paramagnetism. It is shown that experimental data on the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature in FeSe correlate qualitatively with the calculated behavior of DOS at EFE_{\rm F} as a function of the pressure.

Interplay of superconductivity and magnetism in FeSe1−x_{1-x}Tex_x compounds. Pressure effects

The influence of uniform pressures PP up to 5 kbar on the superconducting transition temperature TcT_c was studied for the FeSe1−x_{1-x}Tex_x (x=0x=0, 0.85, 0.88 and 0.9) system. For the first time, we observed a change in sign of the pressure effect on TcT_c when going from FeSe to tellurium rich alloys. This has allowed to specify the pressure derivative dTcT_c/dPP for the system as a function of composition. The observed dependence was compared with results of the {\em ab initio} calculations of electronic structure and magnetism of FeSe, FeTe and FeSe0.5_{0.5}Te0.5_{0.5}, and also with our recent experimental data on pressure effects on magnetic susceptibilities of FeSe and FeTe compounds in the normal state. This comparison demonstrates a competing interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in tellurium rich FeSe1−x_{1-x}Tex_x compounds

Magnetic properties of FeSe superconductor

A detailed magnetization study for the novel FeSe superconductor is carried out to investigate the behavior of the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility χχ in the normal state with temperature and under hydrostatic pressure. The temperature dependencies of χχ and its anisotropy Δχ=χ∣−χ⊥Δχ=χ_{|}-χ_{\bot} are measured for FeSe single crystals in the temperature range 4.2-300 K, and a substantial growth of susceptibility with temperature is revealed. The observed anisotropy ΔχΔχ is very large and comparable with the averaged susceptibility at low temperatures. For a polycrystalline sample of FeSe, a significant pressure effect on χχ is determined to be essentially dependent on temperature. Ab initio calculations of the pressure dependent electronic structure and magnetic susceptibility indicate that FeSe is close to magnetic instability with dominating enhanced spin paramagnetism. The calculated paramagnetic susceptibility exhibits a strong dependence on the unit cell volume and especially on the height ZZ of chalcogen species from the Fe plane. The change of ZZ under pressure determines a large positive pressure effect on χχ which is observed at low temperatures. It is shown that the literature experimental data on the strong and nonmonotonic pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature in FeSe correlate qualitatively with calculated behavior of the density of electronic states at the Fermi level.
